Exclusive: Swedish filmmaker Tomas Alfredson, now best known as the director behind beautiful, taut features like Let the Right One In and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, wrote to Swedish screen legend Ingmar Bergman sometime in the early 2000s with an idea. As the final work in progress wrapped on Friday, Göteborg ‘s head of TV Drama Vision Cia Edström and head of industry and Nordic Film Market Josef Kullengård could finally relax after a mission well accomplished.
Two of their biggest challenges this year – hosting an industry showcase for 700-plus international delegates in a brand-new venue, the Clarion Hotel Draken, and lifting the Nordic industry’s moral by the crisis in the drama sector – had been successfully met. Variety drills down on how and why:
All-Time Record Attendees
As many as 2,029 accredited delegates registered for the festival and industry showcases at the 47th Göteborg Film Festival, and parallel TV and film markets, the largest in the Nordic region. “We’ve never hit this silver line,” said Kullengård. The 18th TV Drama Vision drew 729 delegates, the Nordic Film Market 556.

There are no capes and there is no spandex in Dampyr, the fantasy horror film by Italian director Riccardo Chemello. But the English-language feature, which has been a surprise hit on Netflix, is the first entry in what you could call the Bonelli Cinematic Universe.
The vampire-hunter tale, starring Wade Briggs, Stuart Martin, Frida Gustavsson, Sebastian Croft, David Morrissey and Luke Roberts, is the first of a new wave of comic-book adaptations from Bonelli Entertainment, the Italian publisher billed as Italy’s answer to Marvel.
The film, which cracked the top 3 on Netflix’s US service, is the origin story of Harlan Draka, a Serbian dampyr, or half-breed offspring of a vampire dad and human mother, whose blood has the power to kill the undead. Draka was first introduced to Italian comic fans 20 years ago — the collapse of the former Yugoslavia and the 1990s Balkan war is the comic’s...

Vikings wrapped up its sixth and final season in 2020, but Netflix wasn’t about to let the show’s hype die down. After the original show ended, the streamer decided to make a spinoff, Vikings: Valhalla, which has become incredibly popular. The show has several action scenes requiring a lot of stunt work. Some of the actors prefer to do their stunts themselves, but one of the show’s stars recently said in an interview that doing her stunts led her to the ER covered in blood.

This article contains spoilers for Vikings: Valhalla season 2.
The second season of Vikings: Valhalla serves a lot of masters, with a sprawling plot that includes a dozen major characters, half that many countries, huge action set pieces, and rich interpersonal dynamics. From Harald’s determination to prove that the throne of Norway is his destiny to Lief’s desperate attempts to find out where his true beliefs (religious and otherwise) lie, season 2 is full of nuanced and emotional character moments.
But no one’s journey is as satisfying to watch unfold this season as that of Freydis Eriksdotter. In the series’ first season, we watched her learn to fight for herself, ultimately becoming a shield-maiden of Kattegat. In Valhalla season 2, we get to see her come into her own in almost every other conceivable way: spiritually, as the Keeper of the Faith; politically, as a leader in the Viking stronghold of Jomsborg; and emotionally,...

Heroes don’t quit. In the second installment of 11th-century Norse drama Vikings: Valhalla, the valiant leads — warrior explorer Leif Eriksson (Sam Corlett), his sister and keeper of the pagan flame Freydis (Frida Gustavsson), and ambitious prince Harald Sigurdsson (Leo Suter) — venture into unfamiliar worlds. “Season 2 is about: Does the Viking ethos survive when you get out into the bigger universe?” says executive producer Jeb Stuart. Considering this trio’s ax-sharp survival skills, the answer is ja. They sure can’t go home again: In the finale, Harald’s half-brother Olaf (Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson) conquered Kattegat in a bloody battle that killed both Freydis’ mentor and Leif’s love. The melee also left Harald badly wounded, but Freydis rescued him. In the opener, we learn she’s pregnant but not telling Harald, and the couple opt to take separate paths. Explains Gustavsson: “It’s not lack of love — they have destinies to fulfill.

The Vikings: Vallhalla review is spoiler free
The first season of Vikings spin-off Vikings: Valhalla had a lot to recommend it, from its sprawling cast of major characters and nuanced exploration of the tension between politics and religion to its massive action setpieces and incredible production values. But after a first season that saw a Viking army literally bring down London Bridge, many viewers are probably wondering where on earth the second season of Valhalla could possibly go next. And the answer is: Literally everywhere.
The second season of Vikings: Valhalla is bigger and bolder in every sense of the word, from the scope of its setting and the breadth of stories it’s telling to the sheer number of characters onscreen. There are more storylines, more bloodshed, and even more physical countries than we’ve ever seen before, as the primary narrative fractures into several major arcs and each...

Vikings: Valhalla is a series created by Michael Hirst and Jeb Stuart starring Sam Corlett, Laura Berlin and Bradley Freegard among others.
Today we get to see the second season of Vikings: Valhalla, a series that has known how to collect all of the essence of the preceeding series and transform it into something that is even better and richer. It knows how to make good use of all the film achievements of Vkings, but recreating the impact of the violence and extracting to advantage its barbaric and devastating essence.
This is a prequel that combines history and action, which taken to the most spectacular, has known how to reach millions of viewers with this subtle combination that works so well for some and leaving the sticklers for history rather unsatisfied.
A good, really good second season that continues the rhythm and speeds it up delivering more with regards to the first season.

Making its debut on History back in 2013, "Vikings" delivered a visceral, bone-crunching journey to the eighth-century Scandinavia and the age of the Vikings. The gritty, violent saga told the story of Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel), a farmer who became a warrior and, ultimately, a king. Another part of the series' ongoing storylines involved his first wife, the shieldmaiden Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick), their son Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig), and various other characters who were introduced over the course of the show's six seasons.
As "Vikings" creator Michael Hirst explained to Looper, the writer enlisted a Viking historian to explore some of the most notable figures from that era. He wound up honing in on Ragnar because he was "the first great Viking leader to emerge from the myth and legend, and that was perfect in many ways because it was the beginning of the Viking age." While the series concluded in 2021, fans...

Season 1 of Vikings: Valhalla dropped back in February to Netflix. While it was the premiere season for the new series, it actually followed some 100 years after the events that transpired in History Channel’s Vikings.
While Vikings followed the story of Ragnar Lothbrok and his sons, Vikings: Valhalla covered Leif Eriksson (Sam Corlett) and his sister, Freydis (Frida Gustavsson).

The second season of Vikings: Valhalla won’t even air until 2023, but thanks to the power of Tudum, we have a sneak peek at a climactic Season 2 moment. As yet, there is no news on when Season 2 of Netflix’s new series, Viking: Valhalla, will drop.
Already, the entire season has been filmed. Still, the network has not revealed when fans will get to know what happened to Leif Erikson (Sam Corlett), his sister, Freydis Eriksdotter (Frida Gustavsson), and all the other Viking Age characters.
Among the Season 1 line-up was Queen Aelfgifu, a character portrayed by Pollyanna McIntosh.
She was the wife of King Canute (Bradley Freegard), who discovered her husband married someone else while he was away, looting and pillaging.
Not to be disgruntled, Aelfgifu turned up in England only to have her fleet taken over by Canute’s father and his new wife as they needed an army to attack Kattegat.
As yet, it is unclear how Aelfgifu will react,...
