As much as we love them, the Star Trek movies have their share of mistakes. God stealing a starship, John Harrison revealing himself as Khan, McCoy shaving off his beard in The Motion Picture. But it looks like the movie franchise is about to outdo them all.
Paramount has officially added the next Star Trek movie to its 2025 release schedule. According to TrekCore, the project currently called Untitled Star Trek Origin Story will begin production this year, with Seth Grahame-Smith writing and Toby Haynes directing. The film will take place decades before the 2009 Star Trek reboot from J.J. Abrams.
And it’s a terrible idea.
First of all, there’s the question of the timeline logistics of the film. Although one would assume that the film will occur in the Kelvin Timeline, the alternate universe in which Star Trek (2009), Star Trek Into Darkness, and Star Trek Beyond take place, the...

Star Trek Nemesis just about marked the death of the franchise. Indeed, the fact that it was a worldwide box-office disaster meant that many felt the series had run out of steam. For the first time in many years, there were no active big-screen franchises or Trek shows running on TV, with the often neglected Star Trek: Enterprise going off the air in 2005. It seemed space operas were out of vogue, with the rise of superhero movies taking Hollywood by storm. Not only was there the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies and the Christopher Nolan Batman movies breaking box office records, but also a little company called Marvel studios decided to start making the own movies, beginning with Iron Man.
But what about Star Trek? For a while, Paramount wouldn’t have been able to produce a Star Trek movie even if they wanted to, with the company’s owner, Viacom,...

There have been films like Gladiator that encapsulate the struggle of a warrior during a time when only might was right. Recently, the epic films regarding legendary warriors have become bloodier and focus much less on the warrior’s journey than the violent action sequences. Boudica: Queen of War is an example of how the story can be eclipsed by a dire need for not-so-subtle action scenes and what happens when the key moments of the film are rushed. Directed by Jesse Johnson, the film chronicles the life of Boudica from the time when she was just an Iceni queen, wife of Prasutagus, whose region was attacked by the Romans. Soon after, Prasutagus life came under threat, and the Iceni Queen’s journey began, where she had to make a choice: whether to perish or to become Boudica, the Goddess of War.

Olga Kurylenko is one actress who always chooses to push the boundaries rather than settle for something fairly facile. Her new film Boudica: Queen of War, is a physically grueling project, but at the same time, it lacks the gritty feel it was trying to evoke. The story is in fact well documented, with many films depicting the trials and tribulations of Boudica, who ultimately became a fierce warrior and led the Saxons’ war against the Romans in the first century. Written and directed by Jesse V. Johnson, the film tries to capture the essence of Boudica’s life, beginning from the days she was married to Prasutagus, the king of Britannia, all the way up to her death in 62 A.D. Olga Kurylenko takes on the responsibility to portray Boudica and make it her own, but the shoddy direction and the lazy writing don’t do justice to her fierce performance.

Over the decades, viewers have enjoyed many historical-fiction shows, as it is not just a great way to learn about the subject matter, but the indulgence factor works well in such shows. There is drama, treachery, lust, love, killing, and, most of all, historical accuracy as well. Vikings, Marco Polo, The Tudors, Reign, Downton Abbey, Versailles, and Barbarians are some examples of popular television shows in the historical fiction genre, and all of them have one thing in common: a focus on the politics and the drama of the era. Domina, created and written by Simon Burke for Sky Atlantic (UK and Italy), is about the infamous Roman Empire, which in its early turbulent period was ruled by Augustus Caesar and his wife Livia Drusilla, the protagonist of this show. The power of this woman made sure she and her husband would remain undefeated for a long time.

After several years, Black Mirror is back with its sixth season, and the very first episode has quickly become the talk of the town. Futuristic devices and systems that make humans rely on machines and thereby experience various horrible situations are synonymous with Black Mirror. The first episode of this season, titled Joan Is Awful, takes a common question—how private are our private lives?—and makes an entire episode out of it, and it’s meta. So meta that the actors are making references to themselves and Netflix is being parodied severely. The episode raises many themes, so let’s try to make sense of some of the messages the show intends for us, the audience.

Beyond the Fulcis, Bavas and Argentos of the world, I have to confess that my experience of Italian cinema is very limited, so I’m coming to this boxset of Damiano Damiani and Franco Nero’s collaborations with not just fresh eyes, but little context for what to expect beyond the basics laid out by the description ‘three mafia tales’. You’ll have to pardon me if I miss some context to these films that having seen more, or knowing more about this late ’60s and early ’70s in Italian film, would allow.

Dear readers, I know I've been largely absent from this site I created over 20 years ago. I have reasons... some of them quite boring involving finances / career so I won't bore you with those! In an effort to start writing again I'm opting for a diary like approach for the time being so you know I'm still alive and there's something to read, too. Today I am thinking about cats... which in truth I think about as often as cinema. My own fuzzy son Nero is in the emergency room getting oxygen and fluid treatment. He took a sudden turn for the worse just before the NYC air turned post-apocalyptic movie looking due to wildfires in Canada apparently. Given the timing it's probably unrelated but it feels emotionally true...

This article contains spoilers for Succession.
While Succession is rife with satirical dark humor, narcissism, nepotism, and Shakespearean family betrayal, the show certainly isn’t going to draw many viewers in through the use of warm and cozy relationships. Perhaps only Connor (Alan Ruck) and Willa (Justine Lupe) serve as the exception there. Logan Roy (Brian Cox) is an abusive father who hit Roman (Kieran Culkin) and toyed with Kendall’s (Jeremy Strong) ego and pride. Shiv (Sarah Snook) shanked her brother in the back in the series finale. Roman took a low blow at Kendall’s ability to be a hereditary father. The list goes on and on. The millionaires and billionaires that make up creator Jesse Armstrong’s critical darling are people seemingly incapable of love or genuine affection.
That’s where the dynamic duo of Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen) and Greg Hirsch (Nicholas Braun) come into the fold.

Anime has an uneven track record of being adapted in live-action outside of Japan. Asian filmmakers have made plenty of movie versions of beloved manga and anime series, but in Hollywood, there is a Ghost in the Shell for every Alita: Battle Angel. Thankfully, Sony has invested in an international cast for the live-action take on Saint Seiya with the clout of some familiar faces for the upcoming Knights of the Zodiac.
Knights of the Zodiac tells the story of a headstrong street orphan, Seiya, in search of his abducted sister who unwittingly taps into hidden powers, he discovers he might be the only person alive who can protect a reincarnated goddess, sent to watch over humanity. Can he let his past go and embrace his destiny to become a Knight of the Zodiac? The film stars Mackenyu as Seiya, Madison Iseman as Sienna, Sean Bean as Alman Kido, Famke Janssen as Guraad,...

But she once revealed filming the movie had to be held up because of her co-stars’ hair.

Since the film would feature Bana’s character throughout various stages of his life, Bana had to play younger and older versions of himself. The actor used a traditional Hollywood make-up...

When J.J. Abrams' feature film "Star Trek" was released in theaters in 2009, there seemed to be a clear creative mandate at work. "Star Trek" was set prior to the events of the 1966 TV series on which it was based, telling an alternate timeline version of how the well-known "Trek" characters all first met. Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto), and the rest of the crew were all depicted as younger, hotter versions of themselves, each one more youthful and impulsive than their adult counterparts from 1966.
Given the hot-headedness of the Enterprise crew and the entire 2009 film's "action-packed" vibe, the mandate mentioned above seems to have demanded the filmmakers kick everything into Overdrive. It's as if they wanted critics to respond with the phrase, "This ain't your grandpa's 'Star Trek.'"

This piece contains spoilers for the "Succession" season 4 premiere.
Sadly, "Succession" has entered its endgame. In a matter of weeks, the question posed by the title will finally be answered, all the chips will fall into place and this story will have its definitive ending. Until then, we'll be lapping up every single second of sweet "Succession" goodness that we have: the hilarity of its razor-sharp dialogue, the catharsis of the Roys rehashing familial trauma, and of course, the singular joy of watching odd couple Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) and Greg (Nicholas Braun) share the screen. Empires rise and fall, and alliances come and go, but the kinship between Tom and Greg will last forever ... probably.
For at least a little while longer, Sporus and Nero are basically attached at the hip, with Tom as the Head of Atn and Greg as his right-hand man. Because even though Tom couldn't save...

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is a big movie. It’s essentially a team movie, with not only Billy Batson, but his entire foster family bringing a total of six superheroes to the table (not to mention the presence of Djimon Hounsou’s Wizard). And they’re facing off with three villains, in the form of Helen Mirren as Hespera, Lucy Liu as Kalypso, and Rachel Zegler as Anthea. And then there are a menagerie of magical monsters that populate the film’s final act. And if all of that ain’t enough, there’s a massive DC cameo (which has been inexplicably spoiled in commercials for the film), plus some other fun deep cuts from throughout Shazam history.
So with all of this in mind, we sat down with director David F. Sandberg on the latest episode of...

It's been 10 years since "Man of Steel" kicked off the DC Extended Universe, and since it's been a bit of a messy affair, it only stands to reason that there are still some unanswered questions. Which Robin did the Joker kill before the events of "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice?" Why did Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) make such a big deal out of the government not having their own supervillains in "Suicide Squad" if she'd already been working with the Justice Society for so long that some of the heroes had already hit retirement age and passed their name on to their younger relatives?
And seriously, what is up with that burning violin in "Shazam! Fury of the Gods?"
That last one may not be quite as concerning to Dceu fans, but to the heroes in the new "Shazam" movie, it's apparently been a headscratcher for quite a few years.
