Adam West, the actor known for playing the title role in the 1960s television series Batman, died Friday after a short battle with leukemia, his family confirmed to Variety, the Hollywood Reporter and the BBC. He was 88.
“Our dad always saw himself as The Bright Knight and aspired to make a positive impact on his fans’ lives. He was and always will be our hero,” his family said in a statement.
The actor is best remembered for his turn as Gotham’s Caped Crusader — though his career spanned six decades of film, stage and voice work.
Born William West Anderson on Sept.

Haven Entertainment said on Thursday that shooting and archival retrieval is underway in Los Angeles on the untitled documentary.
The project will chronicle the life of Jerry Buss, the former owner of the basketball dynasty, his relationship with Earvin “Magic” Johnson, and the transformation of the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1980s.
Haven partner Kevin Mann (pictured) and Brendan Bragg, whose credits include Hello My Name Is Doris, are producing with team co-owner Jeanie Buss, and Lakers manager of special events, Linda Rambis.
Kris Belman directs the film, which will explore how Buss built up the team against the backdrop of Los Angeles in the 1980s, right up until Johnson’s retirement following his HIV diagnosis.
“We at Haven strive to work with top-notch talent to tell once in a lifetime stories,” said Mann. “The Lakers organisation has always been one of excellence and this generation is the epitome of that.”

For years, transgender voices have struggled to be heard. But for Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, two transgender women who participated in the Stonewall Riots in 1969, keeping quiet was not an option. Rhys Ernst, the Emmy-nominated co-producer of Transparent, and Focus Features, the film company behind The Danish Girl, teamed up to create a new documentary series, We've Been Around. (Alicia Vikander won an Oscar on Sunday for playing the wife of transgender artist Lili Elbe in The Danish Girl, now out on DVD and On Demand.) It has not been an easy week. At the start of the week, we had our editorial meeting here at HitFix, as we do every Monday, to talk about both the week ahead and longer-term projects as well. For fairly obvious reasons, there was a fair amount of talk about Valentine's Day content, and I mentioned a few different ideas that I might write about, including one that I'll end up publishing at some point about Steve Martin. But even as I pitched a few ideas, I found myself uncomfortable with the entire idea of writing about romantic films right now. Honestly, I was hoping to spend this week with my head down and then just sail right through this weekend without writing about love at all, because for the first time in my adult life, I am no longer sure what I think about it. After all, I was with my wife for 14 years.

Spoiler alert, but Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) was, in fact, not my favorite film of the year. I figured I should just get that out of the way at the start for those of you who feared I might have the same #1 film as Brad and Mike, both of whom listed Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's latest as their favorite film from 2014. Don't get me wrong, I really liked Birdman, but in a surprise to even myself, it didn't make my list, which I think you can pretty much chalk up to the surprisingly good year 2014 wound up being. I was certainly among the scoffers last fall about it being a bit of down year, and just a month or so ago I was of the opinion 2014 offered a lot of films to like, but very few to love. After going through and finalizing my list, I'd like to retract that statement.

The proverbial Top Ten List. A sacred tradition passed down by our cinematic elders. This is the fourth time I have partaken in this holy tradition, and one thing has remained constant is that this list is never set in stone. As we catch up with more films we missed or rewatch our favorites it causes us to like a movie more or less causing this list to change. In fact in 2012 and 2013 I ended up seeing my number one film of the year after I wrote up my Top 10. So the question becomes, “Why Do it?”. Well, for one it’s fun. At least I find it an enjoyable exercise as I try to break down the year that was. I watched 163 movies that were released in 2014. Narrowing that 163 down to a Top 10 is a challenge I enjoy.
Looking at 2014 as a whole it is evident it was a pretty good year.

It’s that time of year again when we reflect on the past year at the movie and make lists to accommodate readers with a snapshot of what movies to see or skip. It’s just for entertainment value; as you know, lists and opinions are subjective and not to be taken too seriously.
Having said that, below you will find the best movies I saw this year; with the exception of The Best Movie of the Year, the rest are in alphabetical order.
Let me know what some of your favorite movies of this past year on Twitter or Facebook.

My favorite movie of the year is a coming-of-age drama written and directed by Richard Linklater shot intermittently over a twelve-year period. It shows the growth of a young boy, his older sister, and their mother. While the spotlight has been put on Ellar Coltrane for his great performance,...

15. The Immigrant -
If one were to rank the films of 2014 based solely on innovation, The Immigrant would probably end up near the bottom. Writer-director James Gray’s languid melodrama tells the tumultuous story of a resilient Polish woman looking to find a slice of the American Dream, without much in the way of narrative bravado or anything approaching experimentalism. The moralistic script feels like a relic from a bygone studio era.
But to assess the film’s merit based on its stubborn refusal to buck conventions is to deny one’s self the virtues of one of the year’s great films. Marion Cotillard gives an unforgettable performance as Ewa, the titular heroine whose desire to save her sister enables her to overcome the harsh realities of life in New York’s Lower East Side in the early twentieth century. Joaquin Phoenix portrays the snarling antagonist who helps her survive,...

They hail from Los Angeles, from Anderson, S.C., from Detroit, Mich. and from Birmingham, England.
Three of them are in their early 30s, one in his late 50s. They range in age from 31 to 59. One has appeared in six movies, one in 60. One has been nominated for an Oscar before, three have not; this year, two are favorites and two are long shots.
But Chadwick Boseman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Felicity Jones and J.K. Simmons all grabbed the screen in 2014 in ways that made us sit up and take notice.

I'm curious what the consensus will be in ten to twenty years, once we look back and evaluate the movies of 2014. It seems I continually see people referring to it as either a great year or a terrible year with little in-between. Were you to judge the year on the quality of the mainstream studio features I could see where you might be disappointed. It wasn't exactly the best year for blockbuster cinema. Hell, Christopher Nolan even came out with a new big budget film and it didn't even make it onto my list of Honorable Mentions. However, you look at the mini majors and smaller distributros, studios such as A24, Fox Searchlight, Sony Classics and Open Road and things begin to perk up, but these studios don't market their films on every channel so at the end of the year when people are asking me "what movies they should...

At the end of the day, trailers often make or break a film. A trailer can quickly turn “Why are they making a movie about a talking raccoon?” into box office gold. On the other side of the coin, a bad trailer could dampen our sky-high hopes for an upcoming franchise sequel. Terminator: Genisys, I’m looking at you.
Some trailers give away too much about the movie, and some too little. There are, however, a handful of trailers that are a perfect blend of plot, style, and tease – and 2014 had some great examples.
But what were the best?
Sorry, trailer for The Grand Budapest Hotel, you were great, but you hit the Internet last October. Yes, it’s awesome to have a new Avengers trailer, but is it really the best of the year? Even with its unsettling use of “I’ve Got No Strings,” we’re going to say no.

The year is almost over and that means it’s time to look back and reflect upon the films that were released this year, and see what has stuck with us the most in 2014. Come join the Cinelinx team as we discuss our favorite films of the year!
Although 2015 has a number of eagerly awaited releases, 2014 ended up to be a pretty darn good year for movies. While the number of releases is down compared to years past, the quality of films for 2014 was outstanding. The big budget blockbusters released this year for the most part got great reviews and audiences responded to them well. There were a number of creative indie and smaller releases that both entertained and inspired us. Overall, as a movie lover you can’t complain too much about the films released in 2014.

Tributes poured in from all corners of the globe after Lou Reed died Sunday at the age of 71. Now, the woman closest to the legendary rocker - his wife, Laurie Anderson - has penned her own short, poignant remembrance: an obituary in their local newspaper. "Last week I promised Lou to get him out of the hospital and come home to Springs, [N.Y.]. And we made it!" Anderson, 66, wrote in The East Hampton Star of her fellow musician and partner of 18 years, whom she wed in 2008. "Lou was a tai chi master and spent his last days here being happy and...
