After seven seasons, the Bordelon family’s journey came to an end. “Queen Sugar” signed off on Tuesday night with a poetic series finale centered around the importance of family — in all its forms.
Series creator Ava DuVernay wrote the finale, titled “For They Existed,” and returned to the director’s chair for the first time since helming the pilot and second episode.
In Variety’s Power of Women cover story celebrating the series’ legacy, the Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated filmmaker said she was “euphoric” about bookending the series as director and insisted she was wholly “satisfied” with the farewell ode.
“‘Queen Sugar’ is the longest commitment I’ve ever had — and we’re talking relationships too — and I did my very best every single day,” DuVernay explained, sitting alongside executive producer Oprah Winfrey. “In the end, there was no sadness; I was just so pleased, so proud. When “Queen Sugar” star Dawn-Lyen Gardner’s Charley Bordelon was missing from the trailer and key art for Season 7 of the OWN drama series, fans questioned where the middle Bordelon sibling had gone.
When the footage debuted, Variety reported that Gardner would not be a series regular for the final season’s 13 episodes, noting that at the end of Season 6, the character made her reconciliation with estranged husband Davis (Timon Kyle Durrett) more official, accepting his remarriage proposal and planning to move back to Los Angeles. With the primary action of Season 7 taking place in the fictional Louisiana parish of St. Josephine, Charley’s storyline would instead be tracked in a number of episodes across the season.
But ahead of the debut of Tuesday’s season premiere, Gardner took to social media to explain that she “did not participate” in the making of the show’s final hours.

OWN has released the official trailer for the seventh and final season of the critically acclaimed drama, created by Ava DuVernay and executive produced by Oprah Winfrey, which begins Tuesday, Sept. 6.

“We were literally just one episode into filming when we had to shut down because of Covid,” Queen Sugar executive producer Paul Garnes says about Season 5 of the Ava DuVernay-created OWN series executive produced by Oprah Winfrey and hailing from Warner Bros Television. “We used that opportunity to reset and repivot the show to be more relevant to the audience and I think to all of us involved.”
In fact, Oscar nominee DuVernay and showrunner Anthony Sparks rewrote most of the planned season during the production’s down time to focus on the pandemic and much more of what was happening in America 2020 – from the political to the personal and back again.
“I think that every character in some ways is a reflection or at least a part of Ava,” notes Dawn-Lyen Gardner, who plays Charlotte “Charley” Bordelon West on the multiple NAACP Image Award-winning show.

Spoiler Alert: This post contains details of Queen Sugar’s Season 5 finale
“Looking back over the season, as emotional as it was for people to watch it when it aired, it was very emotional even when we shot it,” says Queen Sugar executive producer Paul Garnes of the fifth season of the Ava DuVernay created series and its Onward finale last night.
After a 10-episode run that chronicled and detailed the coronavirus pandemic, police violence, the death of George Floyd, and the politics of division on Black America, the OWN drama based on Natalie Baszile’s 2014 novel took the lacerated Bordelon siblings, their offspring, extended family and rural Louisiana community to an optimistic place, or sorts.

In the West African tradition, griots keep their people’s history alive by telling the stories that need to be told. The stories that give Black people energy and hope when they are weary, and courage when they are afraid. This is the role Ava DuVernay has taken on with each her television and film endeavors.
From her Oscar-winning film Selma to her Emmy-winning Netflix series When They See Us, DuVernay has curated stories where tragedy fueled triumphs and Black and brown protagonists have risen above the limitations systemic racism placed on them. Fans of her beloved family drama Queen Sugar...

Spoiler Alert: This story includes details about tonight Queen Sugar Season 4 finale
“As we’ve gone through the four seasons it’s been a juggling act to make sure that this feels relevant, but also has the intimacy of the black family dynamic that so many of us who work on it know to be true and want the show to be even more representative of,” Queen Sugar creator Ava DuVernay says of tonight’ Season 4 finale and the heart of the NAACP Image Awards winning Own series.
Certainly the “I Am” episode penned by showrunner Anthony Sparks was dynamic, to put it mildly. Coming off a season that packed more into 13 episodes than most series do into their entire run, there was an election, a diary, a corrupt revelation, reconciliation and forgiveness between Rutina Wesley’s Nova Bordelon and Kofi Siriboe portrayed brother Ralph Angel. Amidst a politically inspired arrest,...

As we’re now about halfway through the Broadway season, there are currently eight productions of plays set to open this spring. Could we be seeing any of them contend at this year’s Tony Awards? Below, we recap the plot of each play as well as the awards history of its author, cast, creative types, the opening, and (where applicable) closing dates.
“Choir Boy” (opens January 8; closes March 10)
In this new play by Oscar winner Tarell Alvin McCraney, the story centers on the Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys, which for a half a century has been dedicated to the education of strong, ethical black men. One talented student has been waiting for years to take his rightful place as the leader of the school’s legendary gospel choir. But can he make his way through the hallowed halls of this institution if he sings in his own key?...

When Choir Boy, the coming of age story from Tarell Alvin McCraney that predates his Oscar-winning, co-written screenplay for Moonlight, finds its sweet spots – and they are many – the drama, the humor and the music take off for parts unknown. This is a play that, like its unstoppable main character, never quits reaching for the high note, even when perfection is beyond its grasp.
Set in a prestigious prep school for African American boys, Choir Boy – a Manhattan Theatre Club production opening tonight at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre – grapples with questions of pride and shame, sexual identity, legacies and duty. Memorably performed (particularly by its young star Jeremy Pope), its frequent choir songs beautifully sung by the entire cast, the production is another fine addition to director Trip Cullman’s resume (his Lobby Hero was one of Broadway’s 2018 bests).
Still, Choir Boy shouldn’t be oversold, a temptation...

Queen Sugar creator Ava DuVernay is changing the Hollywood game by enlisting an all-female team to direct the Own series, making good on the filmmaker’s mission to create opportunities for women of color. For the two-part midseason premiere, she called on director Julie Dash, whose 1991 film about three generations of Gullah women, Daughters of the Dust, was the first feature-length film directed by an African-American woman to receive theatrical distribution in the U.S. -- and later, was heavily referenced in Beyoncé's visual album, Lemonade.
Despite making history in the ‘90s and helming TV movies, like The Rosa Parks Story starring Angela Bassett, this was her first time directing an episodic series. “I didn’t think we’d still be having these conversations in 2017. The conversation did not change until Ava changed it,” Dash tells Et.
