At the Grammys, Best R&b Album and Best Progressive R&b Album have gone to some of the most influential artists in the industry, including Erykah Badu, Boyz II Men, Mary J. Blige, Chaka Khan, Frank Ocean, Beyoncé and Robert Glasper (much to Chris Brown’s chagrin). Let’s break down this year’s contenders.

This weekend, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is hosting the Regeneration Summit: A Celebration of Black Cinema in honor of their ongoing exhibition Regeneration: Black Cinema 1898–1971, which has been extended through July 16. The three-day festival, which runs Feb. 3-5, will feature live entertainment, workshops, panel discussions and screenings with guests including Julie Dash, Carla Hayden, Janaya Future Khan, Shola Lynch, Justice Maya Singleton and others.
“Our exhibition, Regeneration: Black Cinema 1898–1971, is like no other museum exhibition in that it celebrates Black participation in American cinema from the turn of the 19th century all the way through the Civil Rights Movement in the early 1970s,” Amy Homma, Chief Audience Officer of the Academy Museum, tells The Hollywood Reporter. “We want visitors to understand, celebrate and uplift this history. So what better way to do that than to complement the exhibition with a weekend-long festival?”

What happens when a made-up, virtual rapper signs a deal with a major record label? In the case of Fn Meka, a digitally rendered Black artist largely controlled by artificial intelligence and non-Black creators, major missteps and public backlash over “digital blackface” quickly led to a fiery end. Within weeks, Capitol Records scrapped his deal, his Instagram went private and most of his TikToks were deleted.
The saga resurfaced ongoing conversations about cultural appropriation and racism in AI, given Meka’s use of the N-word and fabricated backstory about his time spent in prison. That the “robot rapper” even received a record deal and amassed more than 10 million followers on TikTok, though, shows that the interest in virtual influencers has persisted, six years after another virtual project — Lil Miquela, an L.A.-based singer and model — became an online sensation.

The last few months have been great for hip-hop. With multiple high-profile releases — some acclaimed, some commercially successful, and some both — and myriad buzzy new artists making big splashes in the genre, what should we expect in the rap field this year at the Grammys? Let’s consider some of the biggest contenders so far as well as a few possible hidden gems.
You can’t start a Grammys rap piece without mentioning one of the biggest hip-hop moments of the last 10 years: Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s “Wap.” The song is likely the front-runner for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song. Add to that the overwhelming love Megan Thee Stallion just got in 2021, and how it’s still the biggest hit among eligible contenders, and you have a recipe for Grammys.
That said, “Wap” is a little old — it was eligible for the 2021 Grammys, but they...

DJ Khaled has released a new music video for “Sorry Not Sorry,” featuring Jay-Z, Nas and James Fauntleroy. The track appears on the hip-hop impresario’s new album Khaled Khaled, which arrived today, April 30th.

In a near-perfect twist of fate, Sza will perform her hit track “Drew Barrymore” on the actor’s new daytime talk show on Oct. 1. Following the performance, the artist will sit down with the host for an interview on “The Drew Barrymore Show” on CBS.
The music video for “Drew Barrymore,” from Sza’s 2017 breakout album “Ctrl,” even featured a brief cameo from the actor.
The artist’s first studio album included 14 songs that depart from traditional R&b leanings. With all tracks co-written by Sza, “Ctrl” featured guest appearances from Travis Scott, Kendrick Lamar, James Fauntleroy and Isaiah Rashad.
Sza most recently released “Hit Different,” her first standalone single since “Ctrl.” The track, produced by The Neptunes and featuring Ty Dolla $ign, was released with a self-directed music video including choreography performed in a junkyard and on haystacks.

For the animated musical “Trolls World Tour,” DreamWorks producer Gina Shay racked up her share of frequent flyer miles over four years — traveling to New York City for reggaeton superstar J Balvin, South Korea for K-Pop girl group Red Velvet and Stockholm for star and music curator Justin Timberlake. “It felt like I was going around the world collecting people’s voices,” she says.
Singing voices, that is. Nearly 40 tunes are woven into the fabric of the film, which tells the tale of hard rock royals trying to overtake competing genres including pop, country, funk, classical and techno. “Different tribes of trolls celebrating different genres of music,” says Universal’s head of film music Mike Knobloch.
Adds Shay: “We wanted people to come together and telling that story through musical genres seemed like a clever way of doing it without feeling preachy.”
That’s no small feat when it comes to using popular songs.

Charlie Wilson appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live to perform his new single “Forever Valentine.” The soulful performance featured two backup dancers and some moody, romance-themed lighting, with Wilson taking the stage without his collaborator Bruno Mars.
Wilson and Mars teamed up for the sultry R&b number earlier this month. Mars provided backup vocals and co-produced the song with his production team the Stereotypes and D’Mile. The team co-wrote the song with Wilson, Micah Powell and Seth Reger, and James Fauntleroy lent his voice to the track as well.

Bruno Mars has linked up with Charlie Wilson for the R&b legend’s romantic new hip shaker, “Forever Valentine.”
Wilson delivers a vintage vocal performance on the cut, belting and crooning sweet and delightfully over-the-top paeans to his partner — “It ain’t gotta be February/to break out some whipped cream and strawberries” — over a thumping funk groove. Mars provides back-up vocals on the track, his voice simmering under Wilson’s as the latter sings, “Will you be mine/My forever valentine/Say you will and make me/The happiest man alive.

When Drake posted “Dreams Money Can Buy” on his label’s blog in May 2011, two historic events were just over the horizon: the U.S. launch of Spotify in July and the inauguration of “Yolo” as the national catchphrase in November. These two things would, of course, help define the Drake we know and love (and some love to hate): the meme-savvy titan of the streaming age, swole and immaculately bearded, feuding with the likes of Kanye West over who’s got the bigger swimming pool. But at that time,...

Cardi B and Bruno Mars released their standalone single “Please Me” on Valentine’s Day (listen to it above), and it has debuted in the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in its first week of release. Can it get them to number-one? Their previous collaboration, “Finesse,” spent several weeks in the top 10 in 2018, but it could never quite reach the top. It peaked at number-three. Will they improve on that result this time around?
This R&B come-on was written by Cardi B and Mars along with James Fauntleroy, Jonathan Yip, Ray Romulus, Jeremy Reeves and Ray McCullough II. NME writer Rhian Daly describes the song as “a mix of modern and classic — a smooth slow jam with trap stylings.” But Pitchfork writer Michelle Kim is more critical, saying that “the duo doesn’t make as much sense together” as they did last year on “Finesse,” and “Cardi...

The long-awaited new album by Drake has arrived. “Scorpion” clocks in at 25 tracks, 12 on side A and 13 on side B, and features guest appearances by Jay-z (“Talk Up”), Static Major and Ty Dolla Sign (“After Dark”) and a previously unreleased vocal by Michael Jackson which leads the hook to the song “Don’t Matter to Me.”
Credited elsewhere on the album are Nicki Minaj, Future and Paul Anka, the 76-year-old crooner known for classics like “Puppy Love” and “Put Your Head on My Shoulder” and a longtime collaborator of Jackson’s.
The album also seems to confirm rumors that Drake has fathered a son, acknowledging his newborn child in the track “Emotionless” and “March 14,” in which he raps “kiss my son on the forehead.” Other references include lyrics about George Zimmerman and Malcolm X.
Within an hour of its release, “Scorpion” shot up to No. 1 on the iTunes chart and on Apple Music.

The nominees are in for the 60th Annual Grammy Awards, and music's biggest night will feature some of your favorite artists ...though some were snubbed.
Singer-songwriter Andra Day announced the four major categories -- Best New Artist, Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year, and Album Of The Year -- on Tuesday's CBS This Morning.
As far as snubs go, Ed Sheeran was only nominated for Best Pop Solo Performance for his track, "Shape of You," to the shock of many of his fans. Lady Gaga and Kesha also received minimal nominations, despite the popularity of their albums.
However, Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar earned quite a few Grammy nods, as well as Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's "Despacito" song that features Justin Bieber.
