‘Riceboy Sleeps’ Scoops Top Canadian Film Award
Anthony Shim’s Riceboy Sleeps has won Canada’s biggest film award, the Rogers Best Canadian Film Award. The prize, decided by the Toronto Film Critics Association (Tfca), comes with a Can$100,000 cash prize. Riceboy Sleeps beat nominees Clement Virgo’s Brother and David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future. The semi-autobiographical film explores the challenges of living between two cultures through the tale of a Korean immigrant single mother raising her son in Canada. Shot in the Greater Vancouver area and Korea, the feature world premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022, winning its Platform Prize, and then played in Busan and a raft of other festivals. The win comes as Toronto-based distributor Game Theory Films gears up for the title’s Canadian release on March 17. The feature will also be released in Korea, Singapore and the US in the coming months.

Sometimes it’s like they read your mind—or just notice upcoming releases as you do. Whatever the case, I’m thrilled that the release of Terence Davies’ Benediction played (I assume!) some part in a full retro on the Criterion Channel this June, sad as I know that package will make me and anybody else who comes within ten feet of it. It’s among a handful of career retrospectives: they’ve also set a 12-film Judy Garland series populated by Berkeley and Minnelli, ten from Ulrike Ottinger, and four by Billy Wilder. But maybe their most adventurous idea in some time is a huge microbudget collection ranging from Ulmer’s Detour to Joel Potrykus’ Buzzard, fellow success stories—Nolan, Linklater, Jarmusch, Jia Zhangke—spread about.

The Ee BAFTA Film Awards took place on March 13 just a few months ahead of the television awards ceremony, which will be held later this year. Now in its 17th year, the rising star award is the only one voted for by the British public and was won by Lashana Lynch.
The night's big winners were "Dune," with a total of five wins, followed by "The Power of the Dog," "Coda," and "West Side Story," each winning two awards.

Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” has been named the best film of 2021 at the Ee British Academy Film Awards, which were presented on Sunday in London by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).
Campion’s Western drama has been a favorite all awards season, and it is the one major film not to have a significant stumble on the road to the Academy Awards, which will take place in two weeks. Although questions remain about its vulnerability under the Academy’s preferential system of vote counting, the BAFTA win is a strong indicator that it remains the film to beat, even if BAFTA and Oscar voters have only agreed once in the past eight years.

Exclusive: Greenwich Entertainment said Thursday that it has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Keyboard Fantasies: The Beverly Glenn-Copeland Story, a documentary about the New Age electronica musician directed by Posy Dixon. A theatrical release is planned for October timed to the release of Copeland’s Keyboard Fantasies Reimagined album, and a current exhibit at the Guggenheim.
Copeland released a pair of folk and blues albums in the 1970s before segueing to a career in Canadian children’s TV, and writing songs for Sesame Street. It was in the 1980s when Copeland began playing with computer-generated sounds. The result is the 1986 album Keyboard Fantasies, now considered groundbreaking in the genre especially after it was lifted up by collectors and got a 2016 rerelease.
In the pic, a Luca production produced by Liv Proctor, Dixon connected with the musician, now living as Glenn Copeland, and began to document his history and emergence into the independent music scene.
