‘Inside Star Wars’ Re-Creates First Day of Shooting: Falling Droids, Grumpy Jedi and Jesus (Podcast)
It was March 22, 1976 — the first day of shooting “Star Wars.” As Mark Ramsey’s new “Inside Star Wars” podcast reimagines those first hours in the Tunisian desert, it was a period of falling droids, an unlikely cameo by Jesus Christ, and lots of doubt from Sir Alec Guinness. You can listen to an exclusive clip on Apple or right here.
Ramsey is the host of the previous hit Wondery podcasts “Inside Jaws” and “Inside Psycho,” among others. Through research, a little imagination and stunning sound design, he and producer Jeff Schmidt re-create the grueling process of bringing now-classic films to life.

Growing up, Carrie Fisher didn’t want to be an actress. But thanks to her role as Princess Leia in “Star Wars,” she became not only a movie star but an interstellar icon, a testament to the power of resistance. “Inside Star Wars” host Mark Ramsey joins us to talk about her life and legacy in the latest “Shoot This Now” podcast, which you can listen to on Apple or right here:
Fisher resisted the lure of Hollywood because she saw how the industry and the news media wounded her mother, Debbie Reynolds, after her father, Eddie Fisher, left her for Elizabeth Taylor.
But Carrie Fisher fulfilled her destiny to end up on-screen anyway. One early role was in Warren Beatty’s 1975 melancholy sex farce “Shampoo.” Ramsey tells us that on-set, Fisher quickly learned about the cold assessing eye of directors. And took careful notes.

The day might be near when it will be news if an upcoming TV series doesn’t have a podcast to go along with it. For now, add Nat Geo’s “The Hot Zone” to the growing list of series enlisting some audio companionship. The story, which tells of Lt. Col. Nancy Jaax’s (Julianna Margulies) efforts to contain the Ebola virus after its first appearance on American soil, also will be addressed in “American Epidemics,” a Wondery audio series produced in conjunction with the TV show.
Lindsay Graham, the podcast host behind “American History Tellers” and the presidential-themed fiction series “Terms” and “1865,” will head up this new series, which will span three episodes. The second episode of “American Epidemics” will focus on the production of “The Hot Zone,” featuring interviews with Margulies and showrunners Kelly Sounders and Brian Peterson.
“American Epidemics” premieres May 10, with new episodes debuting every Friday.

The creators of the “Inside Jaws” podcast are turning their attention to Jonathan Demme’s stigma-shattering “Philadelphia” to mark the 25th anniversary of the Tom Hanks-Denzel Washington drama — and raise money to fight HIV/AIDS worldwide.
The 1993 film helped put a human face on the virus at a time when patients suffered horrific discrimination and ignorance. That is still true in much of the world, and through an arrangement with Coca-Cola, 100 percent of donations made by listeners of the podcast will go to support the (Red) campaign to rid the world of AIDS.
Host Mark Ramsey, who created the podcast with audio designer Jeff Schmidt, told TheWrap that he sought and received the blessing of Hanks, Washington, “Philadelphia” screenwriter Ron Nyswaner, and Joanne Howard, wife of Demme, who died last year at 73.
