One of the long-beloved exercises in comic book fandom is picking out the dream movie versions of your favorite characters, and with the announcement of James Gunn's new "Superman" movie, the fancast wheels are spinning like mad. It's a major bummer that Henry Cavill, who played the Man of Steel in the DC Extended Universe, won't be back in the red cape and spandex for the new film, but since it's focusing on a much younger Clark Kent/Superman, it only makes sense to cast someone else. As Gunn and Peter Safran move away from the Dceu and form the new DC Universe (Dcu), they're going to have to recast a bunch of beloved characters, and it's probably good to rip the bandage off now. After all, we might end up with new versions of Wonder Woman, The Flash, or even Batman.

There aren’t many recognizable faces in “Finding ‘Ohana,” Netflix’s adorably entertaining reimagining of “The Goonies” set in Hawaii. Though Chris Parnell and Marc Evan Jackson jazz up some very funny “Drunk History”-inspired scenes, the speaking roles include Branscombe Richmond, a veteran Hawaiian actor who played owner of the bar where Jason Segel sings his Dracula musical in “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.” There’s also Ke Huy Quan, harder to recognize since his 20-year retirement from acting, in a supporting role. Quan was a childhood hero for many Asian American kids, who first saw themselves onscreen in his performances in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” and of course, “The Goonies.”
One of those kids was Jude Weng, now a prolific director on beloved TV comedies “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” “The Good Place,” and “Fresh Off the Boat,” making her splashy feature debut with “Finding ‘Ohana.” (The film reached the...

Director Jude Weng’s “Finding ‘Ohana” starts on a good note and continues that feeling through most of its story, which focuses on a tween girl and her family searching for buried treasure while reconnecting with each other and their Hawaiian heritage. Paying homage to adventure movies like “The Goonies,” “Dora and the Lost City of Gold” and “Tomb Raider” without blatantly mimeographing them, this family-friendly, character-forward feature from Netflix charms as well as entertains. Yet by the time the first hour has ended, a slight fatigue encroaches on the effervescent fun and it begins to lose its way.
After winning a competition that involves a high-intensity race around the streets of New York City, 12-year-old Brooklynite Pilialoha “Pili” Kawena (Kea Peahu) expects to cash in her prize by spending a perfect summer vacation at a geocache camp in the Catskills. But those dreams are dashed when her semi-estranged Hawaiian...

"This is it! This is where the coin wanted us to go." Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for a teenage adventure movie titled Finding 'Ohana, set on Hawaii's island of Oahu. This kind of looks like a Hawaiian remake of The Goonies, with over-saturated sets and mesmerizing pirate-treasure locations. A summer in rural O'ahu takes an exciting turn for two Brooklyn-raised siblings when an old journal pointing to long-lost treasure sets them on an epic adventure with new friends, and leads them to reconnect with their Hawaiian heritage. 'Ohana means "family", so the movie is essentially about "Finding Family" and reconnecting with her family and her roots on Hawaii. The authentic full cast features Kea Peahu as the youngster Pili, Alex Aiono, Lindsay Watson, Owen Vaccaro, with Kelly Hu, Branscombe Richmond, Ke Huy Quan, Brad Kalilimoku, and Chris Parnell. Looks super fun! Plus, who doesn't love spending time on Hawaii?...

Talk about getting your exposition in fast. The first minute of Team Marco, give or take 30 seconds or so, hands us a funeral – Marco’s aunt (the wife of his grandfather/”nonno”) has sadly passed away. A conversation about whether nonno (Anthony Patellis) can live on his own or might now need to move in with one of his daughter’s. And a load of attitude from the family junior, 11-year-old Marco (Owen Vaccaro), who is ever so slightly put out that he might have to abandon his tablet and online gaming for the chore of paying his last respects.
Also revealed, early on, are daddy issues. Marco’s parents are divorced/separated. His father (Louis Cancelmi) is a game designer: and he has promised Marco the trip of a lifetime to a gaming conference if he can reach level 100 on his game within the allotted time. All of which sets up a.

"Women lovvvvveeee a good bocce toss." Samuel Goldwyn Films has released an official trailer for an indie comedy titled Team Marco, which originally premiered at the Mill Valley, Red Rocks, and Lone Star Film Festivals last fall. Marco is obsessed with his iPad and hardly leaves the house. But when his grandmother dies and his grandfather moves in, Marco's life is turned upside-down and he's forced... to go play outside. "Nonno" introduces him to bocce ball and to the neighborhood crew of old Italian men who play daily at the local court. With sport, laughter and love, Marco finds connection to other people and rounds up a team of neighborhood kids to take on Marco's grandfather and his pals. The sweet comedy stars Owen Vaccaro, Anthony Patellis, Louis Cancelmi, and Anastasia Ganias-Gellin. Most Americans have no idea what bocce ball is, or how to play, which is probably the funniest part of this film.

Netflix has nabbed the rights to “Young Sheldon” director Jude Weng’s feature directorial debut “Finding Ohana.”

Scream Factory is keeping busy with their Collector’s Edition releases of Dracula: Prince of Darkness as well as John Carpenter’s Starman (two of my personal favorites!), and Arrow Video has put together a stellar Special Edition of Bloody Birthday for this week as well. Box Office: ‘House With a Clock in Its Walls’ Edges to $24 Million Debut, ‘Fahrenheit 11/9’ Stumbles
“The House With a Clock in Its Walls” is on its way to a No. 1 debut at the box office with an estimated $24 million from 3,592 North American locations.
The remaining top five slots should go to box office holdovers, with three other R-rated films opening in the $1 million to $3 million range.
“House” stars Cate Blanchett and Jack Black as an eccentric witch and warlock who live next door to each other and who play host to 10-year-old Lewis (Owen Vaccaro), who goes to live with his Uncle Jonathan (Black) in Michigan after his parents die. Eli Roth directed the fantasy pic from a script by Eric Kripke, adapted from the children’s book of the same name by John Bellairs. The Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment film is coming in above earlier estimates, which had placed it in the $18 million to $20 million range. It took in an estimated $7.8 million on Friday.

Jack Black’s “The House With a Clock in Its Walls” is ticking to a U.S. opening of $20 million-plus, early estimates showed on Friday.
Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment’s fantasy film is expected to debut at the higher end of estimates, which were projected to be between $18 million and $20 million at 3,500 North American locations. According to some estimates, the film could earn as much as $25 million in its debut.

The House with A Clock in its Walls’ young lead, Owen Vaccaro, may only just breaking through in his acting career, but the young actor has already starred alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest names. Taking on the role of Mark Wahlberg’s son Dylan in Daddy’s Home and its sequel, he went on to star in Mother’s Day alongside the likes of Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts and Kate Hudson. In Eli Roth’s latest dark and polished ghoulish adventure, Vaccaro gets to dabble in magic alongside Jack Black and Cate Blanchett, not a bad start for the budding actor.

Chicago – “The House With The Clock In Its Walls” is a surprisingly restrained and endearing haunted house pic for kids just getting rid of their training wheels. It’s all a spooky atmosphere with cobwebs galore, creaking doors, a stained glass window which changes on its own, and a library of books which at times resemble the avifauna predators from the Hitchcock classic “The Birds.”
Young orphan Lewis (Owen Vaccaro) is sent to live with his eccentric kimono wearing uncle Jonathan (Jack Black) in small town Michigan after his parents are killed in a car crash. He soon discovers that his uncle is a warlock, albeit a mediocre one. But his next door neighbor, Mrs. Zimmerman (Cate Blanchett), is a much more powerful purple clad witch. Together, they trade insults like Ralph and Alice on”The Honeymooners,” but with knowing glances as they maintain a solid but platonic friendship. Jack...

If you want to scare the kiddies but still keep them giggling, Jack Black is your man. This peerless comic actor can do more with an arched eyebrow than a crazy-car stuffed with clowns, and it’s that old Black magic that ignites The House With a Clock in Its Walls, a supernatural tale set in 1955 in New Zebedee, Michigan (a town with its very own haunted mansion). The School of Rock star plays Jonathan, the warlock who occupies the premises; when he isn’t trying to find the source...

For a director mostly known for gory cannibal/torture flicks like Hostel and The Green Inferno, Eli Roth has gone on to helm one of his finest features yet with an Amblin family fantasy! But before horror hounds run for the hills screaming “sell-out!”, The House with a Clock in Its Walls is far from the plastic PG fright-laden picture some might imagine, given the oddly Christmassy “Harry Potter for horror fans” posters. Based on a book by John Bellairs, Roth and screenwriter Eric Kripke’s gaudy haunted film fun-house is bursting with a firework display of vibrant concepts, riveting fantasy dread, necromancy, ghouls and squirmy purple tentacles. All a young horror fan could hope for and far creepier than the demon nuns and slender men of recent “grown-up” genre hiccups.

I'm not the biggest fan of director Eli Roth. Cabin Fever was a decent film but I haven't really cared for anything else that he's done, especially the Hostel films. The guy is mostly known for his style of hardcore horror and torture porn, so it was shocking to see that he was going to be directing a family horror movie for Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment called The House With a Clock In Its Walls. I was even more shocked by the fact that I actually enjoyed the movie!

Arriving into theaters this weekend is director Eli Roth’s The House with a Clock in Its Walls, his adaptation of John Bellairs’ popular children’s book centered around a young orphan named Lewis Barnavelt (Owen Vaccaro), who goes off to live with his estranged uncle Jonathan (Jack Black), only to learn his new guardian is a warlock, and that the world around him is filled with endless magical possibilities. But when a world-ending threat looms over them, it’s up to Lewis, his uncle Jonathan, and their supernaturally inclined neighbor, Mrs. Zimmerman (Cate Blanchett), to save the day.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with screenwriter Eric Kripke about his longtime obsession with the book version of The House with a Clock in Its Walls and why he’s always wanted to adapt Bellairs’ story for the big screen. Kripke, the creator behind Supernatural, also discussed how...

Jack Black and Cate Blanchett star in this uninspiring tale of a lonely, recently orphaned boy with supernatural skills
Shockmeister Eli Roth takes on something cosier and comfier than usual with this family-oriented movie about an orphan boy who goes to live with his eccentric and mysterious uncle in a spooky old-timey house, full of clocks. It is adapted by screenwriter Eric Kripke from a children’s fantasy novel published in 1973 by the Us author John Bellairs. But, in the larger and more obvious sense, it is basically another post-Potter, post-His-Dark-Materials knockoff, machine-tooled for the tweenie fanbase, about a kid called Lewis (Owen Vaccaro), heartbreakingly lonely and well-mannered, with a quasi-Brit bowtie and sporting an annoying pair of goggles for no very compelling or amusing reason.

Timing really is everything.
That seems especially true for Universal Pictures’ “The House With a Clock in Its Walls” as a mid-teens launch looks to be enough to top the domestic box office. After “The Meg” and “Crazy Rich Asians” led a roaringly successful August, the rest of September looks muted with just a few wide releases on the horizon.
Universal and Amblin Entertainment’s “The House With a Clock in Its Walls” hopes to earn between $18 million and $20 million when it launches in 3,500 North American locations. Studio insiders are cautiously anticipating the lower part of that range, though some estimates show it could make over $25 million. Based on the 1973 children’s book by John Bellairs, the fantasy film follows 10-year-old Lewis (Owen Vaccaro), who goes to live with his uncle (Jack Black) in an old house that has a mysterious ticking heart. Cate Blanchett plays a witch who lives next door.

With his adaptation of John Bellairs' The House with a Clock in Its Walls, veteran horror filmmaker Eli Roth ventures into family-friendly fantasy territory, delivering up his most confidently helmed and all-around entertaining project to date (albeit comparing his latest to his previous films does seem a bit odd). Anchored by a trio of outstanding performances from Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, and Owen Vaccaro, The House with a Clock in Its Walls conjures up a bevy of kid-appropriate frights and has the good sense to cast Kyle MacLachlan as its villain to boot, making for a delightful kickoff to the Halloween season for all the pint-sized fans out there.

Eli Roth probably seems like a strange choice to direct a kids’ movie. He’s not the first horror filmmaker to make the transition, but films like “Cabin Fever,” “Hostel” and “The Green Inferno” are so astoundingly grotesque that adding a PG-rated adaptation of John Bellairs’ novel “The House With a Clock in Its Walls” to his résumé looks, at a glance, like some kind of prank.
But Roth’s films have always had a streak of immaturity about them, as though Roth was so eager to make friends that he’d do anything to get your attention, even poke a dead body with a stick. It makes sense that he could tell a good, family-friendly campfire story if he reined in his harshest storytelling impulses. But it’s impressive that, with “The House With a Clock in Its Walls,” he’s connected with his own inner weirdo, found the still-beating heart inside him,...

John Bellairs’ 1973 novel “The House with a Clock in Its Walls” was the first of the author’s six Ya books to be illustrated by the late Edward Gorey, whose pen-and-ink drawings were sinister and delightful in equal measure; they invited children to embrace the darkness of growing up without surrendering the sense of wonder that kept them young. Universal’s soulless 2018 film adaptation of the same name, on the other hand, is directed by “Hostel” auteur Eli Roth, whose cartoonish approach makes this bittersweet saga of witchcraft and wizardry feel like nothing more than a well-furnished theme park attraction. Still, it’s sure to be a veritable nightmare factory for kids of a certain age, and there can only be so much shade to throw at a movie in which Cate Blanchett head-butts a demonically possessed pumpkin in order to help save the world from Kyle MacLachlan’s rotting corpse.

“Movie magic.” That expression used to mean something quite different back when filmmakers relied on practical effects to make the impossible seem possible, and not every Ya protagonist had dormant supernatural powers just waiting to be discovered. Yet another in a pipeline of vaguely Harry Potter-esque wish-fulfillment fantasies, Universal’s clunky, but not entirely un-charming “The House with a Clock in Its Walls” makes enchantment so easy — and so ubiquitous — as to feel almost ordinary, being the all-too-familiar story of an orphan who picks up some nifty tricks when he goes to live in a house that ticks.
Looking back, Amblin Entertainment — that Steven Spielberg-hatched shingle responsible for such films as “Gremlins” and “The Goonies” — may as well have defined the concept of movie magic for a generation, only to see it watered down by all the computer-generated juvenile thrill rides that followed. The Amblin-produced “House” may as well...

A funny thing happened at the premiere of “The House With a Clock in Its Walls” at the Tcl Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday: Several minutes into the movie, the screen abruptly froze on an image of Colleen Camp, who plays Jack Black’s nosy neighbor, Mrs. Hanchett, and her little dog, too.
Eli Roth jumped out of his seat and went into director mode to downplay what turned out to be an issue with the back-up projector, according to a Universal rep. “During a really, really scary scene, if we all hear Jack Black burping, it’s probably not going to work as well,” Roth explained to the packed house. “So if you can all bear with me, I think that we need [child star] Owen Vaccaro to stand up and lead us in a magical spell for us to restart the movie.”

Universal has unveiled a brand new trailer and poster for ‘The House With A Clock In It’s Walls‘ and it looks absolutely delightful. Although we saw a teaser trailer for the film a few months back, this trailer does a wonderful job of selling the magical family adventure. The film Stars Owen Vaccaro as Lewis, a boy who goes to live with his uncle (Jack Black) in an old creaky house. After discovering that Black’s character is a Warlock and that the house is indeed magical, Lewis accidentally awakens the dead, thrusting the two into a magical adventure.
Directed by Eli Roth, the film seems to have a great mix of comedy, mysticism and heart. Considering that Roth is known for his more violent, R-rated material, ‘The House With A Clock In It’s Walls‘ is a very welcome change for Roth. Although the film could easily be too whimsical,...

"You'll see, it's quite different here." Universal has released a fun second trailer for Eli Roth's The House with a Clock in Its Walls, an adaptation of the children's horror classic. This magical horror adventure and "spine-tingling tale" is produced by Amblin Entertainment and is described as being in the "tradition of Amblin classics where fantastical events occur in the most unexpected places." Owen Vaccaro stars as Lewis, a 10-year-old boy who goes to live with his uncle in a creaky old house with a mysterious tick-tocking heart. The full cast includes Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Sunny Suljic, and Kyle MacLachlan. So this looks really, really good, perhaps one of Eli Roth's best films? It definitely has that Amblin feel to it, and I'm looking forward to diving into this magical world of horror and haunts. Enjoy. I would have never thought that director Eli Roth (Hostel) would ever bring us a movie like The House with a Clock in its Walls. Why? Because it's a family-style horror film and he's mostly known for his bloody hardcore films. I'm not a big fan of his movies, but this one actually looks really good! I never thought I'd say this about an Eli Roth film, but... I can't wait to see this!
We've got a brand new trailer to share with you today for the movie and it's packed with lots of great new footage full of extremely fun and imaginative spooky goodness. Jack Black and Cate Blanchett star in the movie, which is based on book series by John Bellaire.
