This article contains massive spoilers for "Abigail."
Dancing ballet en Pointe is arguably one of the hardest styles of dance to perfect. It takes years of training and rigorous dedication to master the move, and even still, without the support of pointe shoes, the body alone is not enough to withstand the pressure of the weight of a full human on such a small surface area. Ballet en Pointe can be hell on the body — especially the feet — but when executed properly, it looks absolutely effortless. In "Abigail," the incredible new horror film from the creative collective known as Radio Silence, a group of criminals are tasked with kidnapping a small girl named Abigail and holding her for ransom only to discover that they've been set up, and Abigail is a vampire who has locked them in her mansion of horrors to "play with her food" before devouring them all.

How did I find monsters? My father.
It was around Halloween 1956, the same week of Elvis Presley’s second appearance on Ed Sullivan.
My parents often let me stay up and watch late movies. Adventure stuff mainly: Tarzan, tiger hunters, Roy Rogers, Gene Autry. Earlier that year, the first monster I met was King Kong, when my father introduced me to him late one night.
One evening a couple of weeks later, my father said, “I have something special for you tonight.” It was James Whale’s 1931 Frankenstein.
My mother wasn’t happy.

If NBCUniversal’s upfront presentation Monday morning was any indication, the week ahead will be a relatively low-key affair, with plenty of pitching, with very little in the way of specifics.
There will be one constant, however: Striking writers.
Outside of Radio City Music Hall on Monday, a crowd of more than 200 writers marched in front of the venue’s various entrances, calling for a fair deal.
The strike was also present during the presentation itself, where the usual parade of actors and stars was replaced by a cavalcade of NBC News anchors, like Willie Geist and Savannah Sellers, who introduced clip packages for the company’s lineup of TV shows and films.
“If you squint a little bit, I could be Colin Jost,” Geist said, before introducing a Saturday Night Live clip reel.
But the strike was also addressed overtly, with executives resigned to navigate the upfront with the uncertainty it will create.

Updated with Mark Marshall comments. Mark Lazarus, chairman of NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, and interim ad sales chief Mark Marshall weren’t on the production call sheet until very recently for the company’s upfront at Radio City on Monday morning.
Pressed into action after the stunning, consecutive exits over the past few weeks of CEO Jeff Shell and ad sales and partnerships chief Linda Yaccarino, who left to become CEO of Twitter just last week, Lazarus opened the event with self-effacing humor. Following a song-and-dance sequence featuring Ted, Seth Macfarlane’s bawdy, talking teddy bear, Lazarus asked the crowd, “What was more surprising today? Being welcomed by a foul-mouthed teddy bear or seeing me here onstage?”
He continued, “In all seriousness, Linda and I worked together for many, many years here at NBC.” He expressed gratitude “for her many contributions and for building an excellent team here. We want...

The NBCUniversal upfront today kicked off a week of events in New York amid a writers strike.
Given the lack of A-list scripted stars, the company turned to one of its animated stars to kick off the morning.
Ted, the Seth MacFarlane-voiced star of the eponymous movie and upcoming Peacock series, opened with a song-and-dance number with a few barbs.

NBCUniversal’s Television and Streaming chairman Mark Lazarus addressed the shocking departure of advertising powerhouse Linda Yaccarino, who exited the company after more than a decade on Friday to serve as the new chief executive officer of Twitter.
“So what was more surprising today, being welcomed by a foul mouthed teddy bear or seeing me up here on stage?,” Lazarus told an audience of advertisers during the company’s Upfront presentation on Monday, referencing a raunchy musical opening from Seth MacFarlane’s Ted. “In all seriousness, Linda and I’ve worked together for many, many years here at NBC and in our time in sales at Turner, and for her many contributions and for building an excellent team here. We want to thank her and wish her well.”
Since joining NBCUniversal in 2011, Yaccarino’s team has generated more than $100 billion in ad sales, expanded the company’s reach globally and helped launch Peacock.

The WGA is into week three of a strike after failing to ink a deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) before the clock ran out May 1. Among the issues the two sides could not come to an agreement on are mini-rooms, the use of AI and streaming residuals.
The WGA has planned pickets at upfront locations throughtout the week, including Disney’s presentation at the North Javits Center Tuesday, the Warner Bros. Discovery upfront Wednesday morning at the Theater at Madison Square Garden, and YouTube’s upfront Wednesday evening at Lincoln Center.
The WGA had also planned to picket Netflix’s first-ever upfront presentation, which was set to take place at the Paris Theater near the Plaza Hotel Wednesday afternoon. That led to the streamer scrapping the in-person event, which will now be held virtually.

I wish I could say that The Lazarus Effect will turn out to be one of this year’s worst horror movies, but I know the genre too well to honestly predict that a rote, paint-by-numbers horror-thriller that squanders a good idea on poorly executed jump scares could hold that distinction.
No, there will be worse horror movies than The Lazarus Effect this year. But that doesn’t mean that this “scarer,” Blumhouse’s latest and most pathetic attempt to birth a franchise yet, is worth your time. Not at all. Chief among its many sins are squandering a premise that actually flickers with promise, a cast packed with fresh-faced talent and a setpiece that could have been genuinely terrifying in the right hands.
It all starts off with an interesting idea: what if scientists, messing with forces they did not understand, played God and brought one of their own...

Director Neill Blomkamp took the weekend box office with his latest science fiction epic Chappie, though it is not as impressive a debut as it might seem. With the box office even down from last week, Chappie and its estimated $13.3 million is a weak start for a $49 million budgeted film…and it has not seen much better in overseas earnings. Focus, on the other hand, is seeing some pick up thanks to overseas performance, but an estimated $10 million is still keeping it from little more than tepid against its $50.1 million budget. No word on the success of third-place finisher, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, as its budget is not reported, but with an estimated $8.6 million it is likely doing a decent start on its own merits, as the original film only cost about $10 million to make.

It is a slow week for new releases. After the smash opening weekend of Fifty Shades of Grey, the box office took a nose dive as Will Smith and his con artist comedy/drama Focus opened in first place with a fairly tepid estimated $19.1 million, a rough start to the $50 million budgeted film. In second, Kingsman: The Secret Service finds it has settled comfortably in second place for the third week in a row, earning an estimated $11.8 million. Counting its worldwide take, it has managed to pull itself into decent financial footing, while it is no match for The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, whose estimated $11.2 million puts it at nearly double its costs in domestic earnings alone, and Fifty Shades of Grey, whose worldwide $486.2 million (and estimated $10.9 million weekend) practically guarantees the rest of the franchise will follow, regardless of critical reception.

Relativity released their new horror/thriller film, "The Lazarus Effect," into theaters this weekend, and all the top, major critics have submitted their reviews. It turns out that most of them didn't like this one as it only garnered up a small 33 score out of a possible 100 across 24 reviews at the Metacritic.com site. The film stars: Sarah Bolger, Mark Duplass, Olivia Wilde, Evan Peters and Donald Glover. We've posted some blurbs from a couple of the critics, below. James Rocchi at TheWrap, gave it a great 80 score, stating: "The Lazarus Effect is a smart, unsubtle chiller that should leave even a dedicated horror fan shaken and spooked from its opening scene’s revelations to its final scene’s implications." Gary Goldstein over at the Los Angeles Times, gave it a solid 70 score. He stated: " Director David Gelb, switching gears from his fine 2011 documentary "Jiro Dreams of Sushi," keeps the...

These days, you generally don’t see too many “science gone amok” stories (especially theatrically), which made The Lazarus Effect such a refreshing experience. While it fits perfectly into the wheelhouse of other films I enjoy from that same sub-genre (The Fly, Flatliners, Re-Animator and to a certain degree, Pet Semetery), it does a nice job of blazing its own path along the way. And rather than just exploring the devastatingly immediate effects of pushing the boundaries of science, like many of its predecessors, The Lazarus Effect puts a really interesting twist on the sci-fi/horror mash-up by finding a way to quietly examine the ideals of faith and the repercussions of our actions without ever getting too heavy-handed about it.

Actor, writer and director Mark Duplass takes another step into the horror genre with The Lazarus Effect, a Blumhouse production directed by David Gelb. In the film, Duplass stars as Frank, an ambitious scientist who has created a serum nicknamed “Lazarus,” which has the power to bring the dead back to life. During one particular experiment, his wife Zoe (Olivia Wilde) dies in a freak accident and he quickly uses the serum to resurrect her. While it does work, Frank and his team being to wonder if they have accidentally unleashed an evil force that cannot be contained.
The Lazarus Effect looks like a subtle take on the Frankenstein story, but what’s interesting about it is how down to earth a lot of it seems. This is especially the case with Duplass, as he makes Frank into a normal person and not the wild-eyed scientist whose ambition has clearly robbed him of his sanity.

February is the cruelest month for solid PG-13 horror movies bent on luring the kiddies for popcorn and calculated jump scares. While the unapologetically stupid B-thriller "The Lazarus Effect" offers little in the way of a salve or antidote — or, in spirit of the film's mumbo-jumbo sci-fi parlance, "serum" — to this formula, not once during this absorbingly hokey ride will you be thinking about anything else. It's a compelling, even decently acted piece of schlock that breezes by at a lean 83 minutes, with enough self-awareness to know you're going to forget it the minute the lights go up. "Jiro Dreams of Sushi" director David Gelb takes a hairpin career turn to ambivalently concoct a witchy brew of ridiculousness. Olivia Wilde and Mark Duplass star as engaged-to-be-married scientists steering a Berkeley research team toward a hush-hush medical breakthrough — bringing the dead back to life by way of a seminal-looking fluid called the Lazarus Serum.

I can't say The Lazarus Effect doesn't get straight to the point as this "back from the dead" thriller runs only 83 minutes and even less than that if you don't count the credits. But while it doesn't necessarily waste much time getting into the thick of things and features a relatively notable cast, it doesn't really offer anything all that new and strangely turns into something of a lackluster, nightmare vision of Luc Besson's Lucy. I swear, I need to learn how to use all 100% of my brain at once, the possibilities are endless! The story centers on a group of researchers who stumble on a serum with the potential to bring the dead back to life. However, during a test trial something goes wrong and one of the lead researchers, Zoe (Olivia Wilde), is electrocuted and dies. Her fiancee and co-lead on the project, Frank (Mark Duplass), does the obvious.

With its deft mixture of new-school psuedoscience and old-time religion, “The Lazarus Effect” marks an impressive narrative debut for documentary director David Gelb (“Jiro Dreams of Sushi”). Starring a cast of young talents and indie stalwarts and backed by the Blumhouse horror-making machine, Gelb’s horror film doesn’t exactly break new ground, but it nonetheless finds plenty to relish in the mouldering bits it stitches together as it gives classic themes about death, life and the soul a literal and figurative shot in the arm. Ready to see a film about resurrecting the dead sprinkled with possessed dogs and telepathic superpowers? Yeah, you are! Throughout history, coming back to life after croaking has been coined the “Lazarus Phenomenon.” In fact, this phenomenon dates back to 380 B.C. when Plato documented Er’s journey to the afterlife. It’s also mentioned in John 11 when Jesus resurrects Lazarus back in 100 A.D. It’s not just ancient history though. In 2013, a dude from Ohio came back to life after being proclaimed dead for 45 minutes. Creepy huh? This wild concept serves as the premise for the upcoming horror-thriller The Lazarus Effect. After screening the film at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, we’ve broken it down to a simple formula.

Just watched the trailer for "The Lazarus Effect" (watch it above), and I'm happy to report that its No. 5 placement on my ranked list of 2015 horror movies so far appears to be justified. At the very least, I predict a serviceable contemporary spin on "Flatliners," with a side of "Pet Semetary" thrown in for good measure. Do not screw with science, y'all. Oh, but wait, there's more! Because I'm a sick person who's watched too many horror movies, my mind was positively buzzing with visual references as I watched this. Below are five other movies (plus one book!) the "Lazarus Effect" trailer reminded me of. "The Others" The part where brought-back-from-the-dead Olivia Wilde is under the sheet conjured up this creepy "I am your daughter" scene from the 2001 chiller starring Nicole Kidman. "Event Horizon" Ollivia Wilde has the blackest eyes...just like Sam Neill's dead wife in this worse-than-you-remember Paul W.S. Anderson sci-fi.

What happens when you bring Olivia Wilde back from the dead? According to the first trailer for Blumhouse Productions horror “The Lazarus Effect,” nothing good.
Mark Duplass (“The League”) stars as a medical student leading a project experimenting with a serum capable of bringing animals back from the dead. But when his girlfriend (Wilde) accidentally dies in the process, he tries the Lazarus serum on her.

Olivia WIlde, Evan Peters and Mark Duplass star in forthcoming Blumhouse horror, The Lazarus Effect. Here's the first trailer...
Blumhouse Productions continues its knack for attracting great casts to its medium-budget horror productions with The Lazarus Effect, which stars Olivia Wilde, Mark Duplass, Donald Glover and Quicksilver himself, Evan Peters.
It's about a group of medical students who tinker with the boundary between life and death; their attempt to revive the corpse of a dog proves to be successful, and when Olivia Wilde's character abruptly pops her clogs, Mark Duplass decides to bring her back with his newly-patented life serum.
The plot - and indeed the first trailer, lurking below - sound quite a bit like Stuart Gordon's anarchic adaptation of Hp Lovecraft's Re-Animator, but played for scowls rather than laughs. In that 1985 classic, medical students use a glowing ooze to revive a dead cat, which turns out to be incredibly aggressive,...
