Amid a tumultuous moment for both Hollywood and the banking sector, Legendary Entertainment has secured a significant line of credit with JPMorgan to help it continue producing movies and TV series.
The company says it has inked a five-year, $800 million credit facility being led by J.P. Morgan, replacing a previous 2018 credit facility that the independent entertainment firm had signed with the mega-bank.
The deal is a vote of confidence in the company as the lending market begins to tighten amid a challenging macroeconomic environment and rising interest rates.
Led by CEO Joshua Grode, Legendary is behind films like the Dune and Godzilla franchises. Earlier this month, it also secured the film and TV rights for the video game franchise Street Fighter. And $800 million can go a long way toward financing productions.
Late last year, the company also struck a multiyear deal with Sony to distribute and market its new films.

According to Deadline, Legendary Entertainment has just inked a new deal with Sony. The agreement comes in the wake of Legendary's expired deal with Warner Bros., which in recent years brought us films like "Detective Pikachu" and "Godzilla vs. Kong." The new deal with Sony, which the outlet describes as a "multi-year worldwide film distribution partnership," will be a major one for the company, whose big-budget, spectacle-oriented films were potentially hamstrung at the box office by Warner Bros.' surprise 2020 decision to release its films day-and-date on HBO Max.
The new deal will give Legendary the theatrical-centric model that seems to be a great fit for the films that have made it a success in the past, like "The Dark Knight," "Inception," and "Jurassic World." Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group is one of very few major Hollywood players that doesn't currently have its own streaming service, meaning the films we'll...

Legendary Entertainment, the production and mass media company that has been in bed with Warner Bros. for the last several years, has found a new home at Sony, THR reports today.
THR details, “Under the terms of the deal, Legendary’s movies will be distributed and marketed globally by Sony, excluding China, where Legendary East will handle those duties. Sony will also handle home entertainment and TV distribution for those films. Sony does not have a streaming service, and Legendary will continue to partner with other companies for streaming.”
Important to note, however, “The pact does not include the Dune or Godzilla franchises, which will continue to be released by Warner Bros., Legendary’s previous partner.”
Legendary, you may recall, had moved from Warner Bros. to Universal back in 2014, but the company had already returned to its former home at Warner Bros. by 2019.

Legendary Entertainment, the production company behind “Dune” and “Godzilla vs. Kong,” has cut ties with Warner Bros. and entered a multi-year worldwide film distribution partnership with Sony Pictures.
Under the new agreement, Sony will market and distribute Legendary’s upcoming theatrical motion picture titles. However, select existing projects at Legendary are exempt from the pact, meaning Warner Bros. Pictures is still backing “Dune: Part Two.” The sequel to 2021’s sci-fi adaptation “Dune” is currently in production and slated for release on Nov. 3, 2023.
In a press release, Sony Pictures and Legendary emphasized that the companies are aligned in their “ongoing commitment to theatrical distribution as a driver for other ‘downstream’ windows and the theatrical window’s long-term value for films.”
That sentiment may be a not-so-subtle nod to Legendary’s public spat with Warner Bros. in late 2020. At the time, the production company threatened to take legal action over Warners.’ decision...

Studiocanal veteran Isabel Hund has been tapped as CEO of the new Legendary Entertainment and Tobis joint venture.
Hund has spent the last 10 years at Studiocanal leading its acquisitions and productions in Germany. She’ll have a similar focus at the Jv, which remains unnamed, overseeing its development, production and distribution efforts.
The Jv was created in July to create premium German-language serial programs, with German indie Tobis handling operations on the ground in Germany from its new Munich offices and Legendary overseeing distribution outside of German-speaking Europe.
At Studiocanal, Hund built and ran the local production team, creating family entertainment titles such as Heidi and The Little Witch. Prior to joining in 2012, she had served as Director of Production for Columbia Pictures Germany.
Replacing her at Studiocanal is Sandrine Mattes, who was named Executive Vice President, German Production and Acquisition over the summer. Mattes was previously Head of Production & Acquisition,...

While filming Dune in late 2019, Oscar Isaac mentioned a passion project to one of the film’s key producers — Mary Parent, vice chairman of worldwide production at Legendary Entertainment.
It was not a sci-fi blockbuster — a genre Isaac has come to dominate in franchises like Star Wars and Dune — nor was it a prestige series in the vein of HBO’s Scenes From a Marriage, which he executive produced and starred in alongside Jessica Chastain.
It was a comic book. About a cop who walks around with a bullet hole in his head.
The result of that conversation is now upon us. With the publication of Head Wounds: Sparrow, from Isaac’s Mad Gene Media and Legendary Comics — the publishing arm of the Burbank-based production company behind films like Dune and Godzilla vs. Kong — Isaac, 43, further diversifies his professional résumé.

The business of moviegoing may be grappling with unprecedented, pandemic-induced pressures, but no one should underestimate the economic value of a theatrical release.
That was the strong perspective offered by Legendary Entertainment CEO Joshua Grode on Wednesday morning during a Q&a held as part of the Variety Power of Law breakfast, presented by City National Bank, at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills.
“I think there’s going to be a very vibrant theatrical business,” Grode told Variety Editor-in-Chief Claudia Eller, who conducted the 30-minute interview. Grode, a former lawyer who took the reins of Legendary in 2018, emphasized that Legendary’s model for backing big tentpole movies relies on strength at the box office to drive pricing and fees for premium VOD, pay-one television deals and other after-market exploitation that goes on for years.

Legendary Entertainment, the studio behind “Dune,” is selling a $760 million equity stake to the investment company Apollo, the companies announced Monday.
The minority investment comes as Legendary concluded its most profitable year to-date in 2021 on the backs of “Dune” and “Godzilla vs. Kong.”
The deal will allow Legendary to regain operational and creative control from the China-based company Dailan Wanda.
“Legendary is known for its world-class content and franchise features and has strong relationships with top studios and streaming platforms alike,” Apollo Private Equity Partners Aaron Sobel and Lee Solomon said in a statement. “In making this fund investment, we were excited by the velocity in their television and film business, the strong management team and the massive secular tailwinds driving the industry. Already, Legendary generates significant free cash flow that’s reinvested in high-growth categories, and we also see compelling M&a opportunities ahead. We view Legendary as a...

Legendary Entertainment has sold a $760 million equity stake to Apollo, the companies announced on Monday
The pact gives the investment giant a minority ownership position in the studio behind “Dune” and “Godzilla vs. Kong.” In July, Variety broke the news that Legendary was exploring a possible sale and merger and had abandoned an earlier plan to merge with a special purpose acquisition company (Spac).
Wanda, which bought Legendary in 2016 for $3.5 billion, will continue to have a stake in the company. However, much of the money that Apollo is investing will be used to pay off Wanda, which will move control of the company away from Chinese conglomerate. As part of the deal, Legendary’s management team will gain equity in the company and will have an opportunity to participate in an equity incentive plan.

Bonham Carter plays Eudoria Holmes, the matriarch of the famous sleuthing family, in the series that is based on Nancy Springer’s beloved books. Now set to be released in theaters and HBO Max on October 22nd, we have an extended look at the new Dune movie that should give you a much better idea of what to expect from the latest Denis Villeneuve epic:
Oscar nominee Denis Villeneuve directs Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ “Dune,” the big-screen adaptation of Frank Herbert’s seminal bestseller of the same name.
A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, “Dune” tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence—a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential—only those who can conquer their fear will survive.

This has been circulating the last two weeks, with the principals saying nothing happening. But Deadline has been hearing that Dune backer Legendary has caught the attention of buyers in this moment of rumored consolidation following the linkups of Discovery and WarnerMedia, and MGM and Amazon.
The rumor last week was that Netflix was eyeing Legendary, but this has been roundly denied that anything was going on with Netflix.
While big moves might well be afoot from the likes of Comcast and ViacomCBS, a lot of the rumored couplings of production companies/distributors going for billions seem contrived, and possibly are stories shopped by companies that want to seem relevant. Or maybe it is a slow summer. Legendary’s Josh Grode and Mary Parent have a banker, but they don’t have to sell, and they certainly wouldn’t give up the reins of the company if anything does happen.

Add Legendary Entertainment to the list of media companies that may capitalize on the burgeoning desire for high-end Hollywood content.
The company behind last spring’s “Godzilla vs. Kong,” one of the few pandemic era blockbusters, and the upcoming adaptation of “Dune,” has been in discussions to sell an equity stake or potentially merge its operations with another player. Bloomberg reported in April that Legendary had tapped investment bank LionTree LLC to explore possible deals, including merging with a special purpose acquisition company (Spac). That route, one that enlists a publicly traded shell company as a means to raise capital by tapping the market, has recently been favored by the likes of Bustle and Core Scientific. But talks appear to be heating up in recent weeks, with the company exploring something separate and apart from a Spac, according to insiders.
It may be getting fueled by the rise in deal-making in the entertainment sector.

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures dropped the full trailer for their highly anticipated "Dune" adaptation on Thursday. In it, Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) dreams of Chani (Zendaya), a woman he has never met but is inexplicably drawn to.
"I've been having dreams about a girl on Arrakis," Paul tells his mentor, Duncan Idaho (Jason Momoa).
"Dreams make good stories," Duncan replies. "But everything happens when we're awake."
The Atreides family, collectively known as House Atreides, settle on Arrakis (aka Dune) and come into conflict with the brutal Harkonnen -- a rival House of nightmarish conquerors -- and the native inhabitants known as the Fremen, of which Chani is a member.
The trailer includes plenty of fight scenes, including hand to hand, mass warfare and space combat. And of course, a shot of the gargantuan sandworms that inhabit Dune and are feared by all.

Last September, Warner Bros. and Christopher Nolan gambled that global audiences were ready to return to movie theaters in force with the cerebral blockbuster Tenet. But it’s anemic $20 million opening in North America (over two weekends in many markets) scared away Hollywood distributors for the rest of 2020. In fact, WB eventually pushed its entire 2021 film slate onto a “hybrid” model of simultaneous theatrical and HBO Max releases. In retrospect, perhaps we were all just… waiting for Godzilla?
That’s one takeaway from the rousing theatrical debut of Godzilla vs. Kong, which despite being simultaneously available to watch in theaters and on HBO Max was able to rally an impressive $48.5 million at the U.S. box office during a pandemic.
Opening Wednesday, March 31, the film grossed nearly $50 million over its five-day start, including $32.2 million on just the traditional three-day frame over the holiday weekend. The numbers are all the more...

At a time when production is shut down, Netflix continues to grow its slate through acquisitions. One day after the streamer paid $20 million world rights to the Ted Melfi-directed Melissa McCarthy-starrer The Starling, Netflix closed a deal with Legendary Entertainment for Enola Holmes, the Harry Bradbeer (Fleabag and Killing Eve) directed drama that stars Stranger Things‘ Millie Bobby Brown. All rights but China are in the deal.
It’s the start of a potential franchise based on the six-book book series The Enola Holmes Mysteries. Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) adapted it. With its stock soaring, Netflix’s challenge is to not run out of new product.
Pic’s produced by Legendary’s Mary Parent, Alex Garcia and Ali Mendes, along with Millie Bobby Brown and Paige Brown through their Pcma Productions shingle. Exec producers are Joshua Grode, Michael Dreyer and Harry Bradbeer.
Brown, who worked with Legendary on Godzilla: King of the Monsters, stars alongside Sam Claflin, Adeel Akhtar, Fiona Shaw, Frances de la Tour, Louis Partridge, Burn Gorman, Susan Wokoma, Henry Cavill and Helena Bonham Carter.
Pic tells story of Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes’ rebellious teen sister Enola, a gifted super-sleuth in her own right who often outsmarts her brilliant siblings. When her mother mysteriously disappears on her 16th birthday, Enola seeks help from her older brothers. But soon realizing they’re less interested in solving the case than in packing her off to finishing school, Enola does the only thing a smart, resourceful and fearless young 1880s woman can do… she runs away to London to find her. Meeting a cast of memorable characters along the way, Enola’s caught in the middle of a conspiracy that could alter the course of political history.

Legendary Entertainment has hired Sirena Liu as the CEO of its China subsidiary, Legendary East. Legendary is the studio behind the “Pacific Rim,” “Jurassic World” and the “Godzilla” movie franchises.
Liu was most recently managing director for Twentieth Century Fox’s China office, a post she’d held since October 2015 until mid 2019. The post became redundant following Fox’s acquisition by Disney.
After a stumbling start in 2011, Legendary East was established as a wholly-owned subsidiary based in China. Its mission was to produce large-scale local films using Hollywood expertise and globally-targeted co-productions that would avoid China’s film import restrictions in their home market.
In 2016, Chinese conglomerate Dalian Wanda spent the eye-watering sum of $3.5 billion to acquire the Burbank-based parent company, in one of the largest cross-border deals of its kind in the cultural sector. The mega deal caught the attention of Chinese authorities, which moved in mid-2017 to...
