New coach Ariana Grande has had a tough time with the whole “elimination” aspect of “The Voice” this season. Every time she’s lost a team member, whether it be Bella DeNapoli, Vaughn Mugol or Raquel Trinidad, she’s broken down in tears. Viewers saw the “Thank U, Next” singer reaching for the proverbial tissues yet again on Tuesday night when Ryleigh Plank was eliminated from the competition. Ariana, who has always worn her heart on her sleeve, expressed her emotions on Twitter: “i’m emotional, i’m nervous, i’m excited, mostly, i am so deeply proud of these humans.”

The Voice swung the axe Tuesday. And swung it, and swung it, and swung it, cutting down Season 21’s Top 20 to a lucky Top 13.
Were it not for Ariana Grande’s immense social-media following, I’d have anticipated that her team would’ve been totally decimated. Monday, you’ll recall, had been less an off night for them than an awful one.

With Monday’s episode, Season 21 of The Voice went live, teeing up make-or-break performances by the Top 20 — though I expected a Top 21, to be honest. After last week’s reveal that viewers could vote for a coach-picked contestant to return to the competition — either Team Ariana Grande’s Vaughn Mugol, Team Blake Shelton’s Hailey Green, Team Kelly Clarkson’s Aaron Hines or Team John Legend’s Samara Brown — I thought extra space would be made for a comeback kid. Not yet, apparently. (Tuesday, during the Wild Card Instant Save.) Keep reading, though, and we’ll discuss all of Monday’s performances.

Monday’s episode of The Voice not only marked the beginning of Season 21’s Knockouts, it slid into the Mega Mentor’s seat Ed Sheeran (pre-positive Covid-19 test, obviously). And he quickly proved himself to be not only a savvy advisor to Blake Shelton, John Legend, Kelly Clarkson and Ariana Grande’s starstruck teams but also a right charming chap, too. One minute, he was playfully praising Blake’s dressing-room rendition of “Sweet Caroline,” the next he was cracking wise about how Yanks think that every Englishman drinks tea and knows the queen. Over and over again, Monday’s episode of The Voice teed up the saddest kind of mic-drop moment — the kind in which a singer’s asked to drop the mic on their way not just off the stage but the show. Along the way, Ariana Grande got goosebumps galore, John Legend retained a purple-haired competitor who reminded him of Pink, Kelly Clarkson stole a 13-year-old dark horse from Ari, and Blake Shelton was left so awestruck by a performance, he remarked, “I don’t know that I’ve ever seen anything like that.” Spoiler alert: It’s the first one up.

How do you know that the Season 17 line-up of ‘American Idol’ contestants is one of the best ever? Even the pros have been awestruck by the talent onstage. First, Stevie Nicks posts on social media that Alejandro Aranda‘s audition made her weep. Then we learned that Elton John wrote on Instagram how moved he was by Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon‘s Top 14 version of his song, “We All Fall in Love Sometimes,” a lesser-known tune from Sir Elton’s 1975 album “Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy” that has been previously covered by Jeff Buckley and Coldplay. Two other hopefuls picked more obvious choices from British superstar’s songbook, Raquel Trinidad with “Tiny Dancer” and Eddie Island with “Bennie and the Jets,” but their familiarity likely led in part to their eliminations. Meanwhile, Jeremiah easily made his way into the Top 10 just on the basis of fan votes.

On the April 8 episode of “American Idol,” Ryan Seacrest revealed that only seven of the 10 singers were moving on to the live shows. This meant that three contestants in Group 2 of the Top 20 saw their dreams of winning season 17 end. Which of these artists do you think was wrongly eliminated and was most deserving of a place in the Top 14? Vote in our poll below and then sound off in the comments section.
In episodes taped weeks ago, the remaining score of artists from the Top 40 had been split into two groups. Each of those Top 20 contestants had to perform both solo and in duets with celebrities in front of judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie. That trio of talent then determined if each contestant deserved a place in the Top 14.
The three singers in contention in Group 2 to be eliminated were: Ryan Hammond, Logan Johnson and Raquel Trinidad.

For the first time in 17 seasons, Ryan Seacrest called in sick to American Idol on Monday, forcing mentor Bobby Bones out of the wings and into the spotlight. (Bones tried to play it cool, but let’s be real — he’s been ready to give Seacrest the Nomi Malone treatment since Day 1.)
Even without Seacrest on hand to incite panic, Monday’s Idol remained a dramatic two-hour experience, which ended with the elimination of three more singers… and the official reveal of Season 17’s Top 14. But before we find out which contestants are proceeding to next week’s first live episode,...

“American Idol” concluded the Top 20 stage of the competition on April 8 when Ryan Seacrest revealed the seven artists from Group 2 who had made the cut. They join the seven acts from Group 1 who were announced on Sunday to form the Top 14 who will sing for America’s votes in the live shows starting April 14.
As with Group 1, the 10 contestants in Group 2 got one more chance to audition for Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie. This time, they were paired with well-known musical artists to perform duets, often of the songs which are most associated with these famous faces. Following the most stressful trip to Hawaii since the Brady kids pissed off that tiki god, American Idol‘s Top 20 returned to Los Angeles for another round of performances.
Since we’re getting to spend a little more time with each performance from this point on, I’ve decided it’s time to start handing out completely superfluous grades for each. Because, hey, aren’t we all judges here?
