Writer/director Parker Finn’s sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile is aiming for an October 18th theatrical release date – and with that date just six months away, Paramount decided to start building the hype for Smile 2 during their panel at CinemaCon today. They showed a teaser trailer to the people who attended their panel, and in the audience was JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek!
Lance describes what he saw in this teaser: “Story appears to be set around a Taylor Swift type of mega-star artist (Naomi Scott) who gets sucked into the curse of Smile. The sequel has a bigger budget and slicker look, seems to be bigger in scope. There was a very cool scene where a crowd of people under control of the entity are in a tight backstage hallway chasing Naomi Scott, all of the smiling in that creepy way. Plot-wise, it doesn’t give much away.

A lively CinemaCon presentation closed out with spectacular first footage from Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II as studio top brass mostly put speculation of mergers and acquisitions behind them to focus on a rich upcoming slate.
Yet there was scarcely a mention of Mission: Impossible 8, the next instalment in the spy action franchise from Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie due out on May 23, 2025. There was no recorded segment of Cruise dangling from the International Space Station announcing the new title, and no sneak peaks.

Paramount’s hit horror movie Smile gets a sequel this Halloween with returning director Parker Finn’s Smile 2, and the first plot details have made their way out of Paramount’s CinemaCon presentation this afternoon. The first footage from the upcoming sequel was shown off at the event, but unfortunately it is not (yet) being released for the rest of us online.
The good news? A whole bunch of websites including Slash Film were on hand at CinemaCon this week, so we’ve at least got a Smile 2 footage description to work with for now.
Slash Film recaps what they saw, “The teaser footage for Smile 2 that played at CinemaCon 2024 was focused on the new character played by Naomi Scott — a music celeb whose glamorous world is about to get dragged to hell. Filmmaker Parker Finn has experienced a career start that most can only dream of. After his 11-minute horror short "Laura Hasn't Slept" screened at SXSW 2020, Finn signed a deal with Paramount Pictures to adapt it into a feature-length film, "Smile," which stars Sosie Bacon as a psychotherapist who becomes targeted by a sadistic demon. After witnessing a patient's suicide, she's plagued by hallucinations of people she knows staring at her with very creepy smiles, and finds herself unable to trust anything she sees or hears.
"Smile" grossed more than $217 million at the box office, a massive success given its $17 million budget, and a sequel was soon greenlit, with Finn returning as writer and director. Kyle Gallner, whose character survived the last movie and was implied to be the demon's next target, has returned for "Smile 2," and is joined by new cast members Naomi Scott, Lukas Gage, Rosemarie DeWitt, Dylan Gelula,...

Richard Donner's "The Omen" is one of the most revered horror classics of all time. Now, Disney's 20th Century Studios is bridging the franchise back from the dead for a prequel in the form of "The First Omen." Horror has been on an incredible hot streak at the box office over the last couple of years, and Disney is the best in the business at milking franchises for all they're worth. So, will this R-rated franchise revival scare up enough to make it a hit when it opens next weekend?
Director Arkasha Stevenson's horror prequel is currently expected to pull in between $8 and $13 million on its opening weekend, per Box Office Pro. It will be opening directly against Dev Patel's action flick "Monkey Man," which has its sights set on a debut between $16 and $25 million. Both movies will also be contending with "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" on its second weekend,...

Last month, it was reported that the 2024 “Road House” remake could have avoided a streaming debut, but Amazon gave “the filmmakers and (star Jake) Gyllenhaal” a choice: $60 million budget and theatrical; $85 million and streaming. Ultimately, the team chose the latter. At the film’s premiere in New York City on March 19, we asked star Lukas Gage his thoughts about the film going straight to Amazon Prime.
“I obviously love watching in a movie theater. Of course, it’s a little bit of a bummer,” Gage told IndieWire. “But look, if it’s going to be anywhere, if it’s going to go to any streaming, I would love to go to Amazon. I love what they do. I love Amazon Prime. Everything is changing, the industry is changing, and we kind of have to adapt to it.”

Dylan Gelula may be best known for playing the role of Xanthippe Voorhees in 13 episodes of the Netflix series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt… but since I haven’t gotten around to watching that show yet, where I know her from is the recent Nicolas Cage movie Dream Scenario, where her character has a very memorable interaction with Cage. The sequel to 2022’s breakout horror hit Smile has entered production ahead of a release later this year. Here are soe new details about Smile Deluxe…
Smile Deluxe (love that title) has officially started production in Newburgh, New York. The follow-up to 2022’s Smile was virtually guaranteed when the first film came out of nowhere to become one of that year’s success stories, grossing almost $220m from a $17 production budget.
Considering that Paramount were considering simply putting the film straight onto its streaming platform, Smile’s incredible success became a key moment in that year’s shifting narrative regarding the value of theatrical runs for films of all shapes and sizes. Of course, that success also meant that a sequel was inevitable, and the project was fast-tracked into development with director Parker Finn returning to helm the next film in the series as part of a long-term deal he signed with Paramount.

It’s almost time to turn that frown upside down again as Smile 2 casts Lukas Gage alongside Naomi Scott in the sequel.
Smile, Parker Finn’s deliciously creepy horror film, was a bit of an unexpected hit for Paramount back in 2022. Horror has always been a bankable genre; low production costs but decent box office returns is the recipe for success, but Smile was also pretty well received by critics.
A sequel was greenlit almost immediately, because those pesky Hollywood studios like to strike while the iron is hot. Finn is reportedly returning to write and direct the sequel, which doesn’t have an official title yet. Naomi Scott was reported to play the lead and now, as reported by Deadline, Lukas Gage is joining her.

Exclusive: After recurring in the fifth season of FX’s acclaimed crime drama anthology Fargo, Lukas Gage has been tapped to star opposite Naomi Scott in Paramount’s sequel to Smile, the 2022 horror thriller from Parker Finn, which went on to outsized success in theaters following a pivot in release strategy.
Details as to the plot of the as-yet-untitled film, as well as the roles of the actors cast thus far, are under wraps. But Finn has returned to direct from his own script, with Temple Hill producing. The sequel is currently slated for release on October 18, 2024, when it will go up against a still-unnamed title from Universal Pictures.
Going on to gross over $217M in theaters, even if it was initially set up for release on Paramount+, Smile was one of the great, unexpected box office successes of 2022. One of a number of original studio horror films of late to expand into a franchise,...

More than a year after stating their intentions to combine their companies, horror maestros Jason Blum and James Wan have made it official. Wan’s banner Atomic Monster and Blum’s Blumhouse have closed a deal to merge, Blum announced on X on Tuesday with a video showcasing titles such as The Conjuring, M3GAN and Get Out.
“The preeminent homes for horror are now under one roof,” Blum captioned the video.
The two banners have worked together previously, and have the feature Night Swim in theaters Friday from Blumhouse’s longtime home Universal, where his and Wan’s combined company has a first-look deal. The pair also were behind the 2023 hit M3GAN and first partnered on the Insidious franchise in 2010.
Under the deal, Blumhouse and Atomic Monster will work as separate labels and retain creative independence, with a three-way ownership structure split by Blum, the majority owner; Wan; and Comcast,...

Parker Finn’s Smile, an adaptation of his own short film Laura Hasn’t Slept, will expand its world of horror next year with Smile 2. Deadline reports that Naomi Scott has been set to star in Paramount Pictures’ untitled sequel.
Smile 2 will hit theaters on October 18, 2024.
Plot details, of course, are under wraps at this time. In the first film, “After witnessing a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient, Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon) starts experiencing frightening occurrences that she can’t explain. As an overwhelming terror begins taking over her life, Rose must confront her troubling past in order to survive and escape her horrifying new reality.”
While we can expect the mysterious affliction haunting Rose in Smile will return, the bigger question now is whether Kyle Gallner will return.

Naomi Scott, who memorably played Princess Jasmine in Disney’s big-budget Aladdin remake, is set to star in Paramount’s highly anticipated horror sequel, Smile 2. The film, which already had an October 18, 2024 release date, has been on the fast track ever since the first film scored an amazing $217 million at the global box office. Not bad for a movie that was originally planned as a direct-to-streaming film.
According to Deadline, Scott’s role and the premise of the film are being kept under wraps. Apparently the role was a hot one for a lot of up-and-coming young actors, with Scott nailing the part thanks to her status as a rising star. While she’s never really gotten the right breakout role yet (the Charlie’s Angels reboot she was in flopped), Scott seems primed to make it to the next level, and a juicy part in a horror franchise might be just the ticket.

This post contains spoilers for The Fall of the House of Usher and other Mike Flanagan works.
Acid raining from the sky, bodies melting into globs of indiscernible flesh, a troubled boy sucking the last bits of breath into his decimated lungs.
These sights and so much more punctuate the climax to the second episode of The Fall of the House of Usher, easily the most ghastly death in a series full of unsettling ends. Any horror filmmaker would be happy to craft such an upsetting scene, but that’s not all that Usher creator Mike Flanagan can do.
Just moments before young Prospero Usher (Sauriyan Sapkota) gets liquified, he’s met by Verna (Carla Gugino), a woman who haunts every member of the Usher family. Apropos of the Edgar Allan Poe story that gives the episode its title “The Masque of the Red Death,” Verna arrives at the rave...

Parker Finn, the filmmaker behind horror hit Smile, has launched Bad Feeling, a film and television production company, with Jonathan Fass named as the banner’s head of development.
The company will be based at Paramount, the studio that released Smile and with whom Finn signed a first-look deal earlier this year.
Bad Feeling has a definitive mission statement as it enters the space of scary movies and beyond. The company plans to shepherd distinct, high-end genre fare for audiences craving bold, boundary-pushing experiences. The goal is to event-ize the unusual while bringing a bespoke, craft-centric approach to commercial genre storytelling.
Finn’s Smile grossed over $216 million worldwide and was the biggest horror hit of 2022. The movie was the first original horror title to hold the no. 1 position at the domestic box office for two weeks since 2016. Paramount and Finn are already working on a sequel, which has a release date of Oct.

2022's "Smile" was a sleeper hit, but audiences weren't sleeping well after watching that scary experience.
The film follows Rose (Sosie Bacon), a therapist who witnesses hysterical patient Laura (Caitlin Stasey) kill herself while brandishing a sinister smile. Soon, Rose sees other people wearing the grin and promising her she'll die in a week. Our heroine realizes that she's the latest link in a chain of demonic serial killings; her curse is spread by trauma, and unless she wants to kill someone and traumatize an onlooker, she must confront her own past.
"Smile" is an underdog success story worthy of Hollywood. On a production budget of only $17 million, the movie grossed $217 million, becoming the biggest original horror movie of 2022 in a year filled with successes for the genre. The film had originally been slated for a Paramount+ release but was moved to theaters after positive test screenings.

Smile was a surprise hit for Paramount last year, grossing $217 million worldwide; Not bad for a film which was originally intended for a streaming release. The studio is clearly ready for more, as they’ve announced that they’ve slated Smile 2 for an October 18, 2024 release.

Paramount is hoping to bring smiles to audiences’ faces for Halloween season 2024. The studio has set a release date for its untitled sequel to the surprise horror hit Smile of Oct. 18, 2024.
The studio also set a date for the musical adaptation of Mean Girls, which will bow on Jan. 12, 2024. It previously was intended for Paramount+ but has been moved to theatrical. The film stars Angourie Rice, Auli’i Cravalho, Jaquel Spivey and Reneé Rapp. Mean Girls was initially a 2004 film starring Lindsay Lohan, and became a Broadway musical, which in turn has inspired this new take.
Meanwhile, the animated Tiger’s Apprentice was initially intended for theaters but will now bow on Paramount+. The film voice stars Henry Golding, Sandra Oh and Michelle Yeoh in the adaptation of the children’s book.
The studio also pushed back Bob Marley: One Love one month to Feb. 14, 2024. The feature stars Kingsley Ben-Adir as the late music icon.

As financial barriers to filmmaking tech lower — while barriers to higher education continue to rise and student loans remain a legislative flashpoint — film programs nationwide have had to consider how to adapt to stand out.
Many programs have added LED walls (Uncsa, DePaul) and are building backlots that rival Warner Bros. (Scad). Some upstarts are successfully climbing the ranks of a crowded field — Brooklyn College’s Feirstein is only 8 years old — while others are doubling down on long-established reputations: Think Wesleyan (a liberal arts school committed to celluloid) or USC (a big program with an even bigger alumni network). All the while scholarships, financial aid, tuition expenses and postgraduate grants are becoming more paramount to would-be student decision-making.
With all this in mind, THR has compiled its 13th annual list of the nation’s top film programs.

It was a pretty big weekend at the box office — "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" both continued their hot streaks while Disney suffered another flop this summer with "Haunted Mansion." But another, far less flashy horror movie also entered the fold this past weekend and managed to surprise the industry in the form of A24's acclaimed "Talk to Me." The movie didn't exactly come out of nowhere, as it's been earning a great deal of acclaim on the festival circuit this year. But it did manage to do better than anyone thought it would.
The debut feature from Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou took in $10 million domestically on its opening weekend, placing sixth on the charts scarcely behind Tom Cruise's "Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning, Part One." One might have thought a little horror movie like this would have run the risk of getting buried amidst the competition in the middle...
