The idea of bringing back a beloved '90s cartoon like "X-Men: The Animated Series" after 30 years sounds quite like a cash grab meant to exploit nostalgic grown-up fans, but it quickly became clear "X-Men '97" was more than the nostalgia-bait the premiere led us to believe.
Indeed, this is a thoughtful follow-up to the already exquisite '90s show, one that takes advantage of the streaming era's embrace of serialization and grittier stories to deliver a bleak yet still hopeful story about loss, grief, and family. The turning point came during the Genosha genocide episode, which made the story and the characters lose their innocence and open their eyes to the reality of their world. This is a season of television that has delivered some poignant character drama and some thrilling superheroics, all while telling a story with big consequences for mutantkind, but also the larger Marvel universe. While it’s unclear whether or not Trevante Rhodes is into astrology, it’s hard not to notice the ways in which he embodies the archetype of his zodiac sign, Aquarius: unconventional, independent, progressive, nonconforming, and most of all, a free spirit.
When browsing Rhodes’ Instagram, one learns he has a thing for art and sunsets. He’s also a poet with great taste in music, in particular jazz and the soulful sounds of the ‘70s, such as the work of the great Marvin Gaye. But when asking Rhodes to define himself,...

Shamier Anderson is known for going to inordinate lengths to prepare for his movie roles, from embedding himself in street gangs to sleeping in the desert.

"He's always pretending to be this person... I know he's not." Hulu has debuted the official trailer for an indie film titled Bruiser, marking the feature directorial debut of Miles Warren. This first premiered at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival last year and it also stopped by AFI Fest in the fall. It's set to launch on Hulu for streaming at the end of February. A 14-year-old boy turns to a charismatic loner for help after being beaten up, in director Miles Warren's searing feature film debut about fathers, families, and the effects of too much fighting. During summer, Darious explores the boundaries of his manhood through tumultuous interactions with Malcolm, his strict father, and a burgeoning friendship with mysterious drifter Porter. The film stars Trevente Rhodes, Shamier Anderson, Jalyn Hall, and Shinelle Azoroh. TIFF adds that it "contends with legacies of violence — and lands its every punch squarely on the heart.

“Bruiser” builds to a massive brawl that, in a different kind of film, would be the main attraction. But director Miles Warren has other priorities than sensationalizing violence between Black men in a movie that is instead preoccupied with where such aggression comes from. Insightful and universal in so many ways, Warren’s first feature is a confident if sometimes oblique coming-of-age story from an important new voice, focused on an African American teen torn between two very different role models, one who insists that he stay focused and “take his lumps,” the other ready to teach the boy how to defend himself in a fight.
Fourteen-year-old Darious (Jalyn Hall) has all kinds of reasons to be angry. His parents, Malcolm (Shamier Anderson) and Monica (Shinelle Azoroh), send him to a private school full of relatively privileged kids. Miles Warren’s narrative debut Bruiser is a restrained consideration of a familiar premise. Two men with shared history crave respect, approval and affection, but the asphyxiating confines of hyper-masculinity deter them from asking for it. They fight for domination instead, a quest that plagues their respective journeys with undercurrents of violence. Warren has a keen interest in trying to understand this path, in portraying what brutality does to individuals and their communities.
Bruiser chronicles the tumultuous summer between 7th and 8th grade for Darious (Jalyn Hall of Till), a recalcitrant teen struggling with puberty and life in his sleepy suburb. His mother, Monika (Shinelle Azoroh), spends most of her days conducting private violin lessons at home while his father, Malcolm (Shamier Anderson), sells cars at his dealership. With both of his parents working, Darious, whose relationship with his old friends has languished...

"Calm down, bro." This is the kind of excellent short film that launches the career of a talented filmmaker. Bruiser is an award-winning short film made by filmmaker Miles Warren, and it premiered at both the SXSW + Sundance Festivals earlier this year. After his father gets into a fight at a bowling alley, Darious begins to investigate the limitations of his own manhood. The film is an exploration into toxic masculinity, violence, and bullying, and how this is passed from generation to generation. Starring Noble B. Whitted and J.D. Williams. This is not just another film about manhood, there's layers and depth to every single shot in this. Miles Warren "had a very clear vision... We referenced films like The Favourite, Dayveon, The Snowtown Murders, Chungking Express and Paris, Texas." A must watch short film - and it's only 10 mins. Thanks to Short of the Week for the tip on this one.

For emerging filmmakers hoping to take the next step in their artistic and professional journey, finding a community of like-minded creators is crucial. With this goal in mind, Adobe has partnered with Sundance Institute on the Sundance Ignite x Adobe Fellowship program which, since 2015, has provided mentorship and support to promising filmmakers early in their careers. With an eye toward elevating underrepresented voices, the fellowship enables the next generation of creatives by offering an opportunity to share their stories with the world.
This year, as a presenting sponsor of the Sundance Film Festival, Adobe launched a short spot highlighting the work of four Sundance Institute alumni, which was co-directed and edited by 2018 Sundance Ignite x Adobe Fellow Carol Nguyen. The vignette, titled “When I Tell the Story,” epitomizes the importance of giving new filmmakers a platform to share their work and their voice. “When I tell the story, it’s dark and glittery.

With the recent confirmation that Spider-Man: Homecoming will begin a trilogy of movies based around the wall-crawler, it’s likely that Marvel have planned ahead and have at least some idea of what they’ll do in the following two outings. For instance, they might already know which villains will turn up, and if they do, might they tease those characters in Homecoming and its tie-in materials? The answer, apparently, is yes.

During The Clone Conspiracy, we learned that Ben Reilly cloned his creator Miles Warren/the Jackal as a way of punishing him for every evil deed he’s committed over the years. After all, how better to make him suffer than leaving the villain to doubt whether or not he’s actually real? Well, in today’s The Amazing Spider-Man #24, the unleashed Carrion virus left the real Miles still standing and he then set out to get revenge on Ben.
This led to a confrontation between the two which saw the Jackal destroy all of Ben’s cash and passports, effectively stopping him from being able to go and start a new life. After a brutal confrontation between the two, the former Scarlet Spider (who will soon return to that role in a new series) decided to murder his creator, setting him on a path very different to Peter Parker.

The latest issue of Clone Conspiracy wrapped up with The Jackal being revealed as a resurrected Ben Reilly, and based on what we see in the preview below for Amazing Spider-Man #22, we can expect to finally find out how he returned from the dead after literally crumbling into dust in Peter Parker's hands. We'll also hopefully discover what's led the Scarlet Spider down a seemingly villainous path! However, this is a status quo which may not last as there have been rumours lately that we're getting a new Scarlet Spider series once this event wraps up. Kaine was the last hero to hold that mantle, but Ben being back in the suit is something a lot of fans would like to see.
