Since he was nominated for both an Oscar and a BAFTA (which he later won) for his scene-stealing supporting performance in The Banshees of Inisherin, there’s been much talk about Barry Keoghan’s inspiring rise to fame.
As will likely be etched into Irish folklore as his Hollywood trajectory continues its sharp ascent, the Dubliner — born in one of the city’s most disadvantaged neighborhoods — would spend seven years in foster homes as a child. It was only around 2008, aged 16, when Keoghan’s love of movies was piqued by an ad in a shop window looking for actors for a new crime drama that was being shot locally. Three years later, he landed a role in Irish TV series Love/Hate (which would become a breeding ground for young Irish talent), followed by 2014’s indie hit ‘72, before breaking out internationally in 2017 with both Dunkirk and The Killing of a Sacred Deer.

The Nevers was cancelled and pulled from HBO Max last year, but the second half of the first (and now only) season never aired. Thankfully, fans of the series will get the chance to watch those unseen episodes as The Nevers will soon be available to stream on Tubi.
Set in Victorian London, The Nevers follows a group of people, mostly women, known as the Touched, who suddenly manifest abnormal abilities. Among them are Amalia True (Laura Donnelly), a mysterious and quick-fisted widow, and her best friend Penance Adair (Ann Skelly), a brilliant inventor. The series was created by Joss Whedon, who departed halfway through its production and was replaced by Philippa Goslett.

The Nevers is coming to Tubi today. Viewers will see all 12 episodes of the first season air in rotation on the streaming service after their initial airing. Unfortunately, they aren't available on-demand so one has to watch them "live". An ad-supported streaming service, Tubi has made a deal to also stream all seasons of cancelled HBO shows like Westworld, Raised by Wolves, and The Time Traveler’s Wife.
Production on The Nevers was shut down several times due to the pandemic. The historical sci-fi series debuted on HBO in April 2021 and aired for six episodes. The remaining six episodes were expected to be released in 2022 but never materialized. HBO cancelled the series in December and the search to find a new home to air the series began.

The Nevers, one of the many shows pulled off HBO Max, has finally landed at its new home on Tubi, with all 12 episodes becoming available on the platform starting February 13. The episodes will release in a brief window during this time, and executive producer and showrunner Philippa Goslett divulged to TVLine some new information about six never-before-seen episodes that will premiere on Tubi the same day. The Nevers is set against the backdrop of Victorian London in August of 1896. During that time, a supernatural event rocks the city and leaves specific individuals bestowed with special abilities ranging from “wondrous to disturbing.” Their abilities are referred to as “turns,” and these gifted humans are pushed into a new underclass filled with danger. When it becomes clear this new class needs protection, widow Amalia True (Outlander‘s Laura Donnelly) and young inventor Penance Adair (Vikings‘ Ann Skelly) take it upon themselves. The Nevers also stars Olivia Williams,...

In years past, a series about super-powered women from Joss Whedon, the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, would have seemed likely to do well in the ratings and to land a second season renewal. Now, Whedon's been accused of mistreating some of his actors and writers from past movies and series. Will these accusations hurt The Nevers' chances of survival? Will this HBO show be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned. *Status Update Below.

HBO and HBO Max are becoming very unpredictable.
Ever since the Warner Bros. Discovery merger, there have been plenty of controversial decisions from the higher-ups at the company.
If you thought Minx was the only cancellation this week, then we have bad news.
HBO Max has split up with Love Life, canceling the romantic anthology after two seasons.
The writing had been on the wall with the lack of updates following the Season 2 finale back in November 2021.
The first season was headlined by Anna Kendrick, while the second had William Jackson Harper at the forefront.
The series has also been pulled from HBO Max, meaning there's a chance fans will never get to rewatch the series again.
Sam Boyd, the creator and co-showrunner, reflected on the cancellation on Twitter.

The work of Amalia and Penance is over. Deadline reports that both Westworld and The Nevers are leaving the HBO Max streaming service. Westworld was cancelled earlier this year after four seasons on HBO. The Nevers, which has been M.I.A. since 2021, has now also been cancelled.

Despite its recent cancellation, you would expect that a series as acclaimed as Westworld would remain on HBO Max for future viewing, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Deadline has reported that Westworld, as well as The Nevers, will be removed from HBO Max. This seems to be yet another cost-cutting measure from Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, but it likely won’t sit well with fans who expect to be able to watch HBO shows on the studio’s own streaming services.

HBO Max is cleaning house again. After the Warner Bros. Discovery streamer removed over 60 titles from the platform without warning this August — many of which were originals developed for the service — a new batch of series are being prepped to be taken off in the next few days, sources have confirmed to IndieWire.
The most high-profile of these series is HBO’s “Westworld,” which was canceled this fall after falling ratings in Season 4. Other shows getting taken off include Victorian England sci-fi show “The Nevers” and rom-com anthology series “Love Life.” In a similar vein to the Lionsgate series “Minx,” the pulling of these shows effectively doubles as their cancellation announcement. According to sources, other less-high profile titles will be announced to leave the service in the next few days.
In addition, on December 9 Claudia Forestieri confirmed via Twitter that her series “Gordita Chronicles” would be taken off the platform soon.

“The Nevers” has been canceled halfway through its first season by HBO. The Joss Whedon-created sci-fi drama will be pulled from streaming on HBO Max, along with the recently canceled HBO series “Westworld,” Variety has confirmed.
The Laura Donnelly and Ann Skelly-led “The Nevers,” which aired Part 1 of its first season in Spring 2021, was set to debut the back half of Season 1 next year on HBO. Sources close to the situation say it’s possible that the already finished batch of episodes — which were completed under new showrunner Philippa Goslett, who came on board following the exit of Whedon before the show even debuted — will air on another platform.
“Westworld” was canceled by HBO Nov. 4, just under three months after the series aired its Season 4 finale Aug. 14.

Exclusive: Two other original scripted series, Westworld and The Nevers, are coming off HBO Max. Wbd CEO David Zaslav has spoken about his plan to enter the burgeoning Fast channel space, so Westworld and The Nevers would likely be offered in that form, I hear.

In most cases, an actor being cast as a character without a name doesn’t signal great things for the career. Nobody’s queuing up for an autograph from ‘woman in lift’ or ‘angry hot dog customer 2’. Jamie Dornan’s lead role in BBC crime thriller The Tourist bucks that trend. In the six-part series, Dornan plays “The Man”, a nameless (at least to begin with) Irishman who loses his memory when his car is forced off the road in the Australian desert. With barely a clue to go on, he has to find out who he is, what’s he doing there, and most importantly, why somebody’s trying to kill him.
Dornan is great in The Tourist – intense, funny, unpredictable and convincing at every stage of his character’s gradual discovery. It’s comfortably among his best performances so far, and one of the better received projects Dornan’s starred in.

A student’s search for her birth mother has haunting results in this tale from the innovative Irish directing team of Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor
“Who are you?” That’s a question that rings throughout the work of Dublin-born film-making duo Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor. Through a series of mesmerising features, shorts and video projects, the pair have explored ideas of history and duality in ways that are simultaneously baffling and unsettling, playful yet profound. In Rose Plays Julie, which feels like a ghostly horror-tinged companion piece to 2008’s brilliant Helen, they once again address the concept of past and present coexisting through the medium of role-playing, conjuring a deceptively slick psychological drama (it’s their most accessible feature to date) while retaining the austere sense of distance and performance that has defined their intriguing oeuvre.

Infusing realistic settings with visual effects is something VFX supervisor Johnny Han is quite used to, being a craftsman who is just as comfortable working in the present and recent past as easily as science fiction and fantasy. HBO’s “The Nevers”, which operates in the latter categories, chronicling a Victorian-age community known as the Touched, who possess unique, manipulative powers for both good and evil, is a project he says is honestly not that different from serious works like 2020’s “One Night in Miami” and “Welcome to Chechnya,” films that used VFX to alter or remove imagery for importance and effect.
“It’s really about breaking things down into a singular, creative message in every shot,” the Emmy nominee Han says. “We often think of periods of the past as a simpler time, so a lot of the fun was boiling it down, even if the shot is one second long,...

Production will begin on Part 2 of the first season of HBO’s “The Nevers” on Tuesday in the U.K., TheWrap has learned exclusively.
Season 1A of the Joss Whedon-created sci-fi series, which stars Laura Donnelly and Ann Skelly, was shot last year, with a pandemic-forced shutdown hitting after Episode 6 was completed. New showrunner Philippa Goslett, who took over for Whedon in January following his exit from the show last fall, mapped out the back half of the first season of “The Nevers” with her writers’ room while Part 1 was premiering on HBO this spring.
Donnelly, Skelly and the rest of “The Nevers” cast are all returning for Part 2, which consists of six episodes that will pick up where the final episode of Part 1 left off when it aired on May 16. (Need a refresher? Head over here to find TheWrap’s interview with Donnelly and Skelly about the finale.

“Our characters were sold to us as Butch and Sundance in corsets,” explains Ann Skelly of her role in HBO’s “The Nevers.” The series takes place in Victorian-era London and follows a large cast of characters who are granted mysterious new powers, or “turns” as they are referred to in the show. The actress enjoyed the mashup of science fiction and period drama for the human elements she had the opportunity to explore. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Skelly plays the kind-hearted inventor Penance opposite Laura Donnelly’s steely Amalia. She notes that there was immediately a “natural ease” with one another. “I get such an openness from her,” Skelly says of her co-star. “There’s nothing precious about what she’s doing. For production designer Gemma Jackson and set decorator Tina Jones, collaborating on Joss Whedon’s supernatural Victorian thriller, “The Nevers,” was like pulling the pin out of a grenade and watching the fantastical world explode. While this was a far cry from the medieval trappings of their Emmy-winning “Game of Thrones,” it was arguably more challenging to visualize Whedon’s cerebral take on political power and class division, where social misfits are “touched” with extraordinary abilities to save the planet from future destruction.
“I read the script and took lots of images when I went to see him, and I hit the spot with my research,” Jackson said. “Joss loved my ideas about the Galanthi [the aliens that help humanity], which had never been seen before. I think that made him excited. We started to talk about this world with these people having extraordinary things happen to them. It wasn’t a straightforward process, ideas developed organically.

(Warning: This post contains spoilers through the Season 1 Part 1 finale of HBO’s “The Nevers.”)
HBO’s Joss Whedon-created fantasy series “The Nevers” concluded the first half of its first season Sunday with an episode that quenched fans’ thirst for knowledge about Amalia True (Laura Donnelly), her best friend Penance Adair (Ann Skelly), and the Galanthi, the mysterious being that bestowed powers upon them and thousands of other people in Victorian England.
One of those people is Augustus “Augie” Bidlow (played by Tom Riley), who spent the first six episodes of “The Nevers” coming to terms with the fact he has a “turn” at all – and a rather special one at that.
Here TheWrap speaks with Riley about the Season 1, Part 1 finale and where things go from here for Augie and his bird-mind control power, as well as his budding romance with Penance.

“The Nevers” dove deep into the backstory of Amalia True (Laura Donnelly) with Sunday’s Part 1 finale of the Joss Whedon-created show’s first season. With the reveal of the origins of Amalia — a.k.a. Molly, a.k.a. Stripe, a.k.a. Zephyr Alexis Navine — came the tale of how Sarah (Amy Manson) became the villainous Maladie whom fans have gotten to know throughout the show’s first five episodes.
It turns out, that after Stripe was transported from the future by the Galanthi into Molly’s mid-suicide body in the Thames, she was brought into the asylum that Sarah had just been committed to. Sarah comforted Stripe/Molly/Amalia on her first night there, giving Stripe the confidence to tell Sarah the truth about where she came...

Warning: This interview contains spoilers about tonight’s Part One Finale for HBO’s The Nevers, “True”.
After watching the first 26 minutes of tonight’s The Nevers, viewers were probably asking “What show is this?!”.
The series 6th episode, which is the last for this year, kicks off roughly a century from our present day in the future, but no exact year. A fighting squad secures an abandoned area where one of the alien Galanthi currently lives. More to the point, we meet Stripe (Claudia Black), a female fighter, whose soul is ultimately transported back into the body of Molly (who ultimately becomes Amalia True), played by Laura Donnelly, on the day of The Touched, Aug. 3, 1896.
We see Amalia’s past as Molly before she became Touched: How she was a gifted baker, married to a domineering, boorish husband who dies and leaves her with next to nothing. In the wake of this,...

On paper, the idea of a steampunk superhero show that mixes period-set grittiness with ladies punching things seems like it should be a slam dunk. After all, most narratives about people gifted with sudden superhuman abilities are really just stories about power in fancier than usual dress. Shows like these examine who traditionally possesses power, who is allowed to wield it, how it is often used to prop up the privileged that already have it.
And where better to explore these issues than Victorian England? The foggy nineteenth-century streets of London work so well as a frequent backdrop for stories that explore magic or other otherworldly themes – think Penny Dreadful, The Irregulars, and Carnival Row – precisely because this is such a fascinating, specific time of transformation. Innovation spreads through the worlds of science and industry at a speed that often feels indistinguishable from magic.

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for Episode 2 of “The Nevers.”)
If it wasn’t clear to you by the end of the series premiere of “The Nevers” that the villainous “Touched” woman Maladie (played by Amy Manson) has a personal vendetta against our heroine Amalia True (Laura Donnelly), then her twisted game in Sunday’s Episode 2 should have helped you to that conclusion. After all, it finally got Amalia there — though it did leave her (and us) with more questions.
During the hour, titled “Exposure,” Amalia is drawn to Maladie’s lair, where the disturbed woman is keeping her kidnapped victims: Mary (Eleanor Tomlinson), who she grabbed in the first episode, and Penance (Ann Skelly), who she snatched while Amalia was busy looking for Mary. The Nevers has gotten off to a great start for HBO. Sunday night’s premiere of the Victorian science fiction drama series drew just over 1.4 million viewers across linear telecasts and digital, including the best start for a new HBO Original on HBO Max, according to the premium cabler. The debut episode surpassed viewership for premieres of recent HBO dramas including Lovecraft Country and The Undoing, and viewership is expected to grow via additional telecasts and viewing across platforms, HBO said.
Starring Laura Donnelly and Ann Skelly, The Nevers is set in August, 1896, the last years of Victoria’s reign, when London is ocked to its foundations by a supernatural event which gives certain people – mostly women – abnormal abilities, from the wondrous to the disturbing. But no matter their particular “turns,” all who belong to this new underclass are in grave danger. It falls to mysterious, quick-fisted widow Amalia True...
