Melissa Gilbert had a ready answer when asked why fans of Little House on the Prairie always seem to burst into tears whenever they see her in person.
“Because I do! I think it’s just, you know … the show evokes so much emotion in people and made everybody feel,” Gilbert told the crowd Friday at the three-day Little House on the Prairie Cast Reunion and Festival in Simi Valley, CA. “So when they see us, they have the feels, and then the leftover feels from 50 years ago. Now they’re feeling it again through children and grandchildren. There’s this continuity and sense of family. This is a giant family reunion.”

With production now underway on Noah Baumbach’s next feature for Netflix in New York (before heading to London), the full ensemble has been unveiled. While currently untitled, reports indicate the drama, described as a “funny and emotional coming-of-age film about adults,” could be titled Jay Kelly.
Joining George Clooney and Adam Sandler in the feature are Laura Dern, Billy Crudup, Riley Keough, Greta Gerwig, Jim Broadbent, Patrick Wilson, Emily Mortimer, Lars Eidinger, Grace Edwards, Patsy Ferran, Isla Fisher, Thaddea Graham, Josh Hamilton, Eve Hewson, Stacy Keach, Nicôle Lecky, Louis Partridge, Alba Rohrwacher, and Charlie Rowe.
Aside from Gerwig, of course, the film marks a number of reunions for Baumbach, including his Marriage Story star Dern, his White Noise star Lars Eidinger, his Kicking and Screaming star Josh Hamilton, and he also wrote the script with Mortimer. Amy Pascal and David Heyman are producing the film, which we expect will get a 2025 release.

Exclusive: So long for now to Jodie, an animated film-cum-Daria spinoff that was set to feature Tracee Ellis Ross voicing the main character.
The long-gestating project first began as a series that would feature Daria and Jodie, and then was narrowed to just focus on the latter character. In 2020, Comedy Central picked up the adult animated show from creator and head writer Grace Edwards and Mtve Studios with hopes to pair it with South Park.
Two years later, it morphed into a movie.

Wes Anderson has always managed to conjure up so much joy and wonder in his films, from his early days to his most recent work. There’s always an element of childish imagination and wonder to his films that always helps you fall in love with the characters and the worlds. Beneath that style, however, has always been a maturity to his storytelling, a sense of heartache and subtle sadness that lingers through the colourful worlds. Asteroid City is like so much of Anderson’s previous work, it has the joy and wonder, it has the wonderful colour pallet and style we’ve come to expect and perhaps has deeper meanings and messages than in any of his previous work.

Plot: In a remote desert town, Junior Stargazer’s convention attendees find themselves locked down after encountering an alien life-form.
Review: One has to assume that Wes Anderson‘s Asteroid City is a product of lockdown. Given that many of us spent months (or even years) of our lives isolated thanks to the pandemic, it’s inevitable that this would rub off on the work of some of our most accomplished directors. Asteroid City isn’t about the pandemic, but there are certainly moments that will resonate for all, although Anderson, as always, can’t resist defying expectations. The Junior Stargazer’s plot, which dominates the movie, is a film-within-a-film for Anderson, whose story is a lot more complicated than the early trailers revealed. The result is a bold effort it may take a few viewings to truly appreciate, as it was probably the first Wes Anderson movie I’ve...

Here in 2023, we are all uncomfortably familiar with the notion of being trapped in quarantine. So it is entirely to Wes Anderson’s credit that his new feature Asteroid City looks back to the social constraints of post-’50s America and locks its cast in characters within characters – in a play within a documentary – then captures the central players in a fantastical desert quarantine and we still want to learn more.
Bryan Cranston is our tour guide through this convoluted journey as he brings the audience into a television show about Asteroid City, troubled playwright Conrad Earp’s (Edward Norton) latest production. Asteroid City explores the extraordinary goings-on in the quiet desert town of Asteroid City – previously famed for a tiny asteroid, a Huge crater, a road to nowhere and an annual Junior Stargazers’ Convention – and blooms the re-enactment from the constraints of Academy ratio into rich, dazzling widescreen colour.

A dryly comedic bricolage of mid-century Americana and postwar anxieties with only the lightest dusting of plot, the 1950s-set Asteroid City finds Wes Anderson moving even closer to cultural curation and further from sustained storytelling. Still, the filmmaker’s gift for wringing laughs out of absurdity played straight is matched by few. That much is clear from the moment he drops an assortment of characters into the remote, alien-obsessed desert town of Asteroid City, whose attributes—from its proximity to an atomic testing facility to the stiff-necked soldiers milling about—provide numerous opportunities for funny weirdness.
The closest that Asteroid City has to a protagonist is Augie Steenbeck (Jason Schwartzman), a somnolent war photographer whose wife died three weeks earlier. The man was too depressed to tell his kids about the loss until weeks later when a car breakdown strands the family in the titular city, where twin romances break...

With apologies to Guns N’ Roses: Don’t take me down to the Asteroid City / Where the tropes are tired and the gags ain’t witty / Make it stop (Oh, won’t you please make it stop).
To clarify an important point upfront, I’m no Wes Anderson hater. I get that he’s the most parody-able of contemporary American directors, with his taste for painstakingly designed retro-theatrical artifice, for boxes within narrative boxes, for framing and camera movement choices identifiable from a mile away, characters that drip drolleries and plots that plunge fearlessly into manneristic preciousness. But when all the elements click into place, Anderson’s manicured worlds can be enchanting places to visit. Or they can be suffocating constructs that wring all the charm out of his signature storytelling style. Which brings us to Asteroid City.

“You can’t wake up if you don’t fall asleep,” people are advised more than once in Wes Anderson’s madly original 11th film, Asteroid City, which is both addictively stylized and, like this clever little quote, perhaps more than a tad obscure about what it’s ultimately driving at. Set entirely in a sort-of Monument Valley-adjacent desert setting in 1955 and populated by a fabulous ensemble cast, this Cannes Film Festival competition entry from Focus Features, which will open commercially in the U.S. on June 16, is a madly quirky surprise that oozes creativity at every turn. At the same time, however, it sometimes seems to be reaching for serious creative epiphanies that aren’t forthcoming and which foster puzzlement rather than insight.

Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City” is out of this world.
The first look at the stylized universe behind the fictional city has Wes Anderson fans already desperate for more of the auteur’s signature symmetry and tableaux-inspired shot design. The trailer for the film gives a sneak peek at the lush desert landscapes and beige-toned themes of “Asteroid City,” which filmed in Spain.
The film is set to debut in theaters June 16 from Focus Features before a wide release June 23. This marks the first collaboration between Focus and Anderson since the Oscar-nominated 2012 coming-of-age story “Moonrise Kingdom,” the style of which has set the tone for his movies ever since like “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Isle of Dogs,” and last year’s “The French Dispatch” — all distributed by Searchlight.

This review was originally posted for the film’s world premiere at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival.
Wishes aren’t decisions, decisions aren’t actions, and actions aren’t a given, especially where rights are concerned. Women intrinsically know this struggle — not just for choice itself, but for what choosing entails — and Oscar-nominated “Carol” screenwriter Phyllis Nagy incisively, humanely explores that in her gripping, personable drama “Call Jane,” the story of a suburban Chicago housewife (Elizabeth Banks) encountering an underground network of women facilitating safe abortions in the years before Roe v. Wade.
The Janes were real, an activist collective operating illegally but diligently to help pregnant women from all walks of life through a very particular hardship, and their incredible story is the subject of a documentary (“The Janes”) that’s also premiering at this year’s Sundance. But what makes Nagy’s dramatization the perfect complement to testimony-driven non-fiction...

Bill Murray will not appear in Wes Anderson’s next film “Asteroid City” and was replaced by Steve Carell in the project, TheWrap has learned, and the reason was because Murray had tested positive for Covid-19 prior to filming.
