Transforming actors into well-known figures such as Tammy Wynette and Princess Diana was a challenge for artisans, who experimented with techniques to come up with hair and makeup that would look authentic to viewers.
Cate Hall spent hours with Elizabeth Debicki while recreating Princess Diana’s sophisticated coiffure from the early 1990s for Season 5 of “The Crown.” Through a series of incremental adjustments to the wig — and plenty of patience from Debicki – Hall got the look she desired.
“You hold one another’s hand as you keep slicing the wig with a razor and inching towards a shape that feels recognizable,” she recalls of her collaboration with Debicki.
Hall admits that in her first attempt at the wig, Debicki looked more like a “lady called Brenda from 1983” than the glamorous royal. But she kept working on it.

Curated by the IndieWire Crafts team, Craft Considerations is a platform for filmmakers to talk about recent work we believe is worthy of awards consideration. In partnership with Hulu, for this edition we look at how costume designer Kameron Lennox, hair department head Barry Lee Moe, makeup department head David Williams and special makeup effects designer Jason Collins brought the ’90s back to life for “Pam & Tommy.”
Hulu’s limited series “Pam & Tommy” chronicles the marriage of two of the most iconic and ubiquitous celebrities of the ’90s, “Baywatch” star Pamela Anderson and Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee. The show is both an intimate character study and a sweeping portrait of an era, which created both inspiring opportunities and daunting challenges for the filmmakers tasked with comparing and contrasting the public and private lives of Pam, Tommy, and the members of their circle during the most dramatic period in their relationship.

“It is a cherry on top of what was a wonderful experience,” says “Pam and Tommy” editor Tatiana Riegel about the Hulu series earning 10 Emmy nominations, including Best Limited Series. “It is particularly wonderful because both ‘I, Tonya’ (for which Riegel was Oscar nominated) and this were directed by Craig Gillespie, with whom I work quite often. He sets a very high bar and he’s extremely collaborative.”

Hair and makeup artists are at it again, transforming actors into real-life characters. From the sublime to complete, Jared Leto, Jessica Biel, Lily James, Sebastian Stan and Renée Zellweger were among those being trans- formed and techniques including 3D scans of the artist are de rigueur now.
Suits, enhancements and a lot of prosthetics went into helping actors disappear into their parts.
Leto is no stranger to the art of transformation. Last year, he vanished under layers of prosthetics to play Paolo Gucci in Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci.” For “WeCrashed” on Apple TV+, Leto worked with Kazu Hiro, who helped him become WeWorked founder Adam Neumann.
Hiro, who has won Oscars for his makeup and hairstyling turn- ing Gary Oldman into Winston Churchill for “Darkest Hour” and again for Charlize Theron into Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly for “Bombshell,” it’s all about sculpting techniques. His challenge...

Though “Pam & Tommy” may take some creative license in telling its story, the recreation of Tommy Lee (Sebastian Stan) and Pamela Anderson (Lily James) at the height of their fame/infamy is unimpeachable. More than any of the needle drops or the script’s wide-eyed wonderment at VHS and the internet, it is the work of the hair and makeup teams that bring the entire era to life. IndieWire spoke to hair department head Barry Lee Moe, makeup department head David Williams, and makeup special effects designer Jason Collins about tackling that challenge.
“I got [Tommy’s] piercings from Body Electric on Melrose, and I simply took in a photo of Tommy Lee’s chest,” Williams said. “And the man who owns the shop asked, ‘Are you working with Tommy Lee?’ And I said, ‘Well, not exactly, but why do you ask if that’s Tommy Lee?’ [And he said] ‘I know those tattoos!’ It...

Hulu’s “Pam & Tommy” has set the internet alight as viewers tune in each week to see Lily James and Sebastian Stan take on the wild antics of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee. When hairstylist Barry Lee Moe took on the job of turning Sebastian Stan into Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee, he thought a wig would help embody the 1990s rocker’s look. But for Hulu’s limited series “Pam & Tommy,” which premieres Feb. 2 on Hulu, Stan wanted the freedom to touch his hair and feel it. “He wanted it to feel lived in,” explains Moe.
Since these conversations were occurring months before filming, Moe asked Stan to grow out his hair so they could move forward without a wig and get the perfect cut and color. He took Stan to Harper Salon on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles to get his hair treated with a Brazilian straightening process. “We did that to eliminate his texture because his was different from Tommy’s,” says Moe.

In his first year working in film and TV, hair department head Barry Lee Moe (IATSE Local 706) had an experience that forever changed his perspective on the industry.
After driving to set one morning on an early call, he came to learn that there had been an accident. “One of our truck drivers just didn’t make it because he fell asleep driving this huge, semi-trailer truck while he was en route to base camp and crashed … and unfortunately did not survive,” the two-time Emmy winner recalled.
With budgets to manage and deadlines to meet, producers then carried on shooting, he says, “as if nothing had ever happened.”
“That’s when, very early on, I realized that there’s potential for danger in this industry,” Moe continues, “in terms of how they view us and support us, as employees and people.”

Nationwide and global remembrance of 9/11 made its way to the Creative Arts Emmys as The Mandalorian’s Ming-Na Wen and Saturday Night Live production designer Keith Ian Raywood commemorated the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on Saturday.
Before presenting Emmy awards for sound mixing and cinematography on Saturday, Wen addressed the crowd of fellow Hollywood creatives, who she says have helped the nation get through the toughest times.
“The events of September 11 twenty years ago completely changed our lives,” she said. “All of you here tonight are proof that creativity prevails in the hardest times. Art heals. And while we are all living through a global pandemic, your talent is helping the world endure it.”
Also sharing thoughts about 9/11 upon its 20th anniversary was SNL’s Raywood. The Emmy-winning production designer, who snagged another award on Saturday, remembers returning to the long-running sketch show after the historic attacks.

“The Queen’s Gambit,” “The Mandalorian,” “Saturday Night Live,” “The Crown” and “Pose” were among the top winners on Saturday as the first wave of this year’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards were handed out in downtown Los Angeles.
Netflix prevailed among networks and platforms with 12 wins, paced by seven trophies collected by limited series “The Queen’s Gambit.”
The ceremony was held outdoors in a tent in the L.A. Live complex because of pandemic conditions. Attendance was much smaller than in previous years because of the need for social distancing to protect against Covid-19 outbreaks. Those who did attend the show in person went through a gauntlet of paperwork and screenings on site to prove that they were vaccinated and had tested negative for the virus within the past 48 hours.
“The Queen’s Gambit’s” haul included wins for period costumes, period makeup, production design and cinematography for a limited series.

Lily James’ transformation into Pamela Anderson for the Hulu limited series “Pam & Tommy” broke the internet when first look photos of the actress in character debuted at the end of May. James, best known for roles in “Baby Driver” and “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again,” is unrecognizable as Anderson, thanks to nuanced makeup that ever-so-slightly altered her face. Barry Lee Moe, the hair department head on “Pam and Tommy,” confirmed to Variety this week that James spent “anywhere from three to five hours [in] hair and makeup every morning before we even started filming.”
According to Moe, the series also used 25 different wigs for cast members James, Seth Rogen, Nick Offerman, and Taylor Schilling. Sebastian Stan, who stars as Tommy Lee, went the natural route for his hairstyling and grew out his hair.

“I think the ultimate gift of the show is that it has made people in the trans community feel seen and represented in this world in a way they have never been represented before,” declares hairstylist and designer Barry Lee Moe about FX’s “Pose.” The Emmy-winning drama about ball culture in New York is currently airing its third and final season. In the third episode of the third and final season of “Pose,” the FX period drama goes back to the beginning to show off the first ball performance by Elektra’s (Dominique Jackson) new House of Abundance. The theme was “once upon a time,” but the house that appears before Abundance is more “broke-down princesses” than fairytale couture, as hair department head Barry Lee Moe puts it. Conversely, everyone in Elektra’s family comes more than correct, from Candy’s (Angelica Ross) pillow headdress for Sleeping Beauty to Blanca’s (Mj Rodriguez) fairest one of them all, aka Snow White to Elektra’s Evil Queen. It was 10s across the board, naturally, and a statement on what such icons of beauty could and should look like.

There’s a change this year for FX’s trailblazing “Pose,” set in the New York drag ballroom culture scene of the late ’80s. The third and final season begins in 1994, where the ballroom is all but a distant memory and AIDS is the leading cause of death for many.
Yet costume designer Analucia McGorty confesses an upcoming episode that takes place a decade earlier than the original timeline is one of her favorites. The installment, airing May 9, not only flashes back to the 1970s; it’s also an origin story for Elektra Abundance-Wintour, played by Dominique Jackson.
