New Delhi, April 4 (Ians) Former World No.1 Garbine Muguruza has announced that she will miss this year’s clay and grass swings.
“Spending time with family and friends and it’s really been healthy and amazing, so I am going to lengthen this period till summer, therefore I am going to miss clay and grass season,” the Spaniard wrote on Instagram.
Champion at Roland Garros in 2016 and Wimbledon in 2017, Muguruza has not competed since a first-round loss to teenager Linda Noskova in Lyon in February.
She has not won a match since defeating Despina Papamichail in the second round of Tokyo last September, and is on a six-match losing streak.
Muguruza’s ranking has fallen to No.132 this week.

Melbourne, Jan 21 (Ians) Switzerland’s 12th seed Belinda Bencic on Saturday stormed into the women’s singles fourth round at the Australian Open with a hard-fought 6-2 7-5 victory over Camila Giorgi of Italy.
The two players have not met since 2019 but Bencic, the Tokyo Olympic Games gold medallist, enjoyed a 3-2 head-to-head advantage going into their sixth clash. Sabalenka prevailed in her tour-leading 28th three-set match of this season to reach her third final of the year.
At the start of the week, Sabalenka called it a “miracle” that she even qualified for the Wta Finals. But now, after a massive semifinal upset, her miracle has extended all the way into the singles final in Fort Worth.
Sabalenka will now meet No.6 seed, Caroline Garcia, for the Wta Finals singles trophy, which will break their currently deadlocked 2-2 head-to-head. With their semifinal wins, both Sabalenka and Garcia will finish the year inside the Top 5.

Forth Worth (Texas) Ons Jabeur came back to defeat Jessica Pegula 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 in a thrilling match at the Wta Finals here on Thursday.
Jabeur came back to defeat Pegula and this victory will likely have larger ramifications for the Tunisian. Previously, she had dropped seven of the past eight matches against Top 10 players. This was the kind of victory she can use toward maintaining her place among the elite in women’s tennis.
All four of the singles winners over the first two days happened to be the four players who had previously played in the year-end championship. A coincidence? Perhaps not.
Based solely on seeding, three of the four matches were upsets, as first-timers No.2 Ons Jabeur, No.3 Jessica Pegula and No.4 Coco Gauff were defeated, respectively, by Aryna Sabalenka, Maria Sakkari and Caroline Garcia.

Tokyo, Sep 25 (Ians) Russian tennis player Liudmila Samsonova edged Chinese teen Zheng Qinwen 7-5, 7-5 in the Toray Pan Pacific Open final on Sunday to clinch her third title of the year.
This was the world No. 30 Samsonova’s 18th victory in her last 19 matches. The 23-year-old has now won three tournaments over that span, having picked up back-to-back titles in Washington D.C. and Cleveland in August. She will rise to a new career-high ranking just outside the Top-20 on Monday.
Such has been Samsonova’s form in the tournament that she lost serve just six times in Tokyo with wins over Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina, Zhang Shuai, Spain’s Garbine Muguruza, and Wang Xinyu on way to the final.
“It was a really tough match because huge congrats to Qinwen and her team because she’s playing amazing. Seriously, congrats guys. It was a nervous match today. We were fighting every point.

New York, Sep 4 (Ians) Two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova stormed into the fourth round of the US Open for the seventh time after overcoming No. 21 seed Garbiñe Muguruza in three sets on Saturday.
Kvitova, the No. 21 seed who won the Wimbledon women’s singles title in 2011 and 2014, saved two match points to beat Muguruza, the 2016 French Open and 2017 Wimbledon winner, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6(10) in 2 hours and 38 minutes.
The clash of two-time Grand Slam champions, the seventh edition of a rivalry dating back to 2015, was a barnburner to the end. Muguruza served for the match at 5-3 in the third set and held two match points on Kvitova’s serve at 6-5, but the Czech escaped both situations to eventually convert her own fourth match point in the super-tiebreak.

New York, Sep 1 (Ians) World No. 1 Iga Swiatek of Poland defeated former champion Sloane Stephens in straight sets at the US Open in just 1 hour, 13 minutes here Thursday.
Swiatek, who has earlier this year was on a dominant 37-match win streak, won 6-3, 6-2.
The free-swinging Swiatek, 21, a two-time Grand Slam champion, is increasingly looking like she may be ready to scale those heights again. But her current form is still far from the flawless play she exhibited in the spring and early summer.
Still, Swiatek-surprisingly playing for the first time on Arthur Ashe Stadium-easily passed the first significant hurdle in her campaign to add a US Open title to her resume. Stephens, now 29 and ranked No. 51, came in as a very dangerous floater. She was also unseeded, ranked just No. 83 when she won the US Open in 2017.

New York, Sep 1 (Ians) After advancing to the US Open’s second round, Serena Williams was asked if her opening victory had answered any questions she might have had about her ability to compete at the age of nearly 41.
“I don’t think I had any questions,” she said.
Williams defeated World No.2 Anett Kontaveit 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-2 on Wednesday before another raucous, rollicking record crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Again facing the last singles match of her glorious career, she moved better and played freer than she has in recent outings.
For the second straight match, Williams’ opponent seemed more unnerved by the momentous circumstances, particularly in critical moments, than she did. After the high emotions of the opening night spectacle, she was more composed and consistent against a far better player ranked 78 spots higher.
“It’s no rush here. I am loving this crowd. I’m a pretty good player.

New York, Aug 12 (Ians) American teenager Coco Gauff will reach the highest ranking of her career after the 18-year-old defeated world number six Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4) in the third round of the Canadian Open.
Gauff, who has never been ranked higher than her current spot of 11th, will overtake Great Britain’s Emma Raducanu and likely Russian Daria Kasatkina to move up to ninth when the next rankings are released after prevailing in an exceptionally tight match against her Belarussian opponent, reports Dpa. Incredibly, both Gauff and Sabalenka won exactly 131 points each, posting identical success rates on service points (77-of-131) and return points (54-of-131).
Gauff will be considered one of the favourites in the tournament after world number one Iga Swiatek was sensationally eliminated by Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia. Swiatek was sloppy, committing nine double faults to just one from her opponent.

Venus Williams was defeated by Garbiñe Muguruza in the Wimbledon singles final on Saturday in straight sets. Williams, who is 37, was defeated by the 23-year-old Spanish player, 7-5, 6-0, in her first Wimbledon since 2009. The defeat follows her loss in the Australian Open final in January to her sister Serena, who was pregnant at the time. After fending off two set points in the first set, Muguruza swept Williams in the second set, winning her second Grand Slam title when a review showed that Williams’ shot landed long. She is just the second Spanish woman to win a Wimbledon singles.
