Nilüfer Yanya is back with “Like I Say (I runaway),” her first piece of new music since her lauded 2022 album Painless.
With a hypnotic, restless guitar line, “Like I Say (I runaway)” is signature Nilüfer Yanya — evocative, engaging, and effortlessly catchy. The ’90s-esque guitar line is met with a flood of distortion when the chorus kicks in, and it sounds like an epiphany. “The minute I’m not in control/ I’m tearing up inside,” Yanya sings in each refrain with conviction.
Co-written with close collaborator Wilma Archer, Yanya centers “Like I Say (I runaway)”around preciousness of time. “It’s about how you choose to spend your time,” Yanya writes in a statement, “Time is like a currency, every moment. You’re never going to get it back. It’s quite an overwhelming thing to realize.” The song is also paired with a music video directed by Yanya’s sister,...

On the heels of his latest album, Lahai, Sampha has announced a headlining North American tour for 2024 and shared a new music video for his song, “Can’t Go Back.”
Lahai arrived this past October, and earned a shoutout from Consequence’s Sun Noor as one of the best albums released that month. “Named after his grandfather, [Lahai is] a soulful and experimental record with a hopeful outlook,” Noor wrote. In support of the album, Sampha played a handful of US shows in November, and is currently overseas for a mini European tour. Now, though, he’s unveiled plans for a more comprehensive North American tour.
Things will kick off with a performance at the Ceremonia Festival in Mexico City on March 23rd, after which Sampha will bop around the continent, stopping in cities like Miami, Nashville, Boston, Denver, Seattle, Vancouver, and more. Tickets for the shows will first become available via...

Celebrated singer-songwriter Sampha picked Steve Lacy’s hit “Bad Habit” for his customary cover during an appearance on BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge.
Sampha delivered a pared-back, practically delicate rendition of the song. Instead of the original’s thumping drum beat, Sampha used only a spare, skittering percussion track which provided a steely counterweight to the tender thrum of his piano and vocals.
Along with his rendition of “Bad Habit,” Sampha also performed his own song, “Only,” off of his recent LP, Lahai. The LP, released last week on Oct.

During a series of performance residencies this year titled Satellite Business, Sampha played in a circle of musicians — different voices, synths, drums, and electronics vying gracefully for center stage. The shows required smaller, more intimate venues, like St. John at Hackney Church in London, where he performed three nights in October ahead of the release of his new album, Lahai. “It looked beautiful in there, and aesthetically just felt like the right kind of place to have it,” Sampha says. Fourteen years after Drake broke through with his So Far Gone mixtape, public reaction to his new projects has grown predictable. The Toronto rapper/singer will run up numbers on Spotify and Apple Music because, well, he’s the king of streaming. A social-media war will inevitably break out over the quality of his music, his reputed softness in comparison to past street-hardened GOATs, and his beefs with sundry bold-faced rivals. In recent months, those online debates have grown coarse and self-righteous, thanks to an unfortunate lyrical shift towards fellating...

“I think I’m Kanye mixed with Donny Hathaway,” raps Stormzy on the title track of his third album, This is What I Mean. There’s definitely a touch of the troubled West’s ambitious alchemy to the track, which pirouettes from a pretty piano intro (think child’s ballet rehearsal) into an elating, bass-blast of braggadocio, given dramatic ballast with operatic backing vocals.
But there’s really more of Hathaway to Croydon-born grime star. Not just because of the jazzy warmth with which this album leans into its soulful balladry. It’s there in the rich, stable sincerity of his vocals. Like Hathaway, 29-year-old Michael Owou Jr has a voice that can reach through the darkness and steady your heart. Even if you didn’t know that Stormzy’s the kind of national treasure who invests in scholarship schemes to support Black kids through Cambridge University, his decency feels embedded in his frequency.

Kendrick Lamar is no stranger to Studio 8H. The "Alright" singer previously served as the "Saturday Night Live" musical guest in 2013 and 2014, and he joined Anderson .Paak for a performance of "Tints" in 2018. Given how strong his previous "SNL" performances have been, Lamar was the perfect artist to kick off season 48.
The Pulitzer Prize-winning rapper played a three-song set featuring "Father Time," "Rich Spirit," and "N95" - all of which are featured on his "Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers" album. Lamar's performances were largely stripped down, showcasing his voice more than anything else. He performed all three songs in a white box set on the stage, which allowed for some interesting shadow art.
For his final song of the evening, "Father Time," Lamar brought out Sampha, who accompanies him on the studio album, as his special musical guest to join him for a poignant performance that made excellent use of the box-like set space.

“I’m so thankful for my friends, my friends/I’m thankful for the love I share with my friends,” Serpent sings on the chorus, backed by Sampha and Lil Silva, who also co-wrote and co-produced the track. Serpent wrote in a statement,...

Translating a podcast to a TV screen is a multi-pronged challenge. For a show like “Song Exploder,” hosted in its audio form over various stretches of its nearly seven-year run by Hrishikesh Hirway, that transfer of ideas meant going from listening to seeing in more ways than one.
Luckily for Hirway, when it came to the start of each episode of the new “Song Exploder” Netflix documentary series, he already had a solid foundation. Like so many other aspects of the TV project, it was a matter of building on what was already there.
“The theme music for the TV show is actually the same opening from the podcast, but with other stuff added on top of it,” Hirway told IndieWire. “The theme on the podcast is a pretty simple thing, a little synth part and a drum part. I kept them and added orchestration on top of it, violins and horns,...

Fans have had to wait a while for Alicia Keys‘s seventh studio album, “Alicia.” Her previous album, “Here,” was released four years ago in 2016, and she had originally intended to drop this collection earlier in 2020. But due to the Covid-19 pandemic she pushed it back from March to May until finally it became available to listeners on September 18. So what do critics think of it?
SEE2021 Grammy predictions: Album of the Year
As of this writing “Alicia” has a MetaCritic score of 77 based on 11 reviews counted thus far: nine positive and two somewhat mixed, but none outright negative. That’s one point higher than “Here,” and it’s actually her best MetaCritic score since her debut album “Songs in A Minor” back in 2001.
Keys is being praised for her “remarkable gift for classic soul-indebted melody,” to which she adds “more eclectic sounds than she’s tried before.” She’s “welcoming,...

When Alicia Keys made her debut nearly 20 years ago, the primary engine of her music was musicianship itself — her ability to passionately yet effortlessly elide the distance between classicism and modernity, entwining genres and eras in her playing, singing, and writing. Over the years, as we’ve gotten to know her, the focus has shifted toward her own deeply-felt hopes, frustrations, and desires. She says her seventh album is her most authentic and personal to date, but for many listeners, its openness will be familiar.

StaySolidRocky, the San Antonio singer and rapper who sent TikTok into a frenzy with his song “Party Girl,” tops this month’s Breakthrough 25 Chart, which ranks the fastest-rising emerging artists of the month.
In a matter of weeks, StaySolidRocky’s weekly streams went from four-digits to the multi-millions after “Party Girl,” with a reference to Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want To Have Fun,” became the backdrop to a number of TikTok dances and led to his signing with Columbia Records. Time will tell if he can build off the...

An Afrofuturist Kate Bush with some fierce pole-dancing moves, Fka Twigs lept from kinetic music video extra to among the most electric of electronic pop acts with her debut LP1 five years ago. On Magdalene, her long-brewing followup, she moves to the next level, making music that resists being pinned by genre — or even as merely music, so integral is choreography, filmmaking, and photography to what she does. Few current artists (Beyoncé and Bjork come to mind) have made the visual feel so organically integral to their sound.

As the 2010s come to a close, rappers are beginning to look backwards. Drake put his 2009 mixtape So Far Gone on streaming services for the first time in February; Chance the Rapper followed suit, making several of his releases officially monetizable at the end of June. Drake returned Friday with Care Package, a collection of one-offs and loosies he sprinkled onto the internet earlier this decade. At this point, you should expect Future to put Monster and 56 Nights on Spotify any day now.

“I make soulless electronic pop,” Lady Gaga once said. “But when you’re on Ecstasy in a nightclub grinding up against someone and my music comes on, you’ll feel soul.” That kind of contradiction — between the mechanical and the spiritual, between isolation and connection, between escapism and meaning — is the fuel supercharging Hot Chip’s seventh album. This is music that feels hot and cold in the same moment, in the grand tradition of Roxy Music and the Pet Shop Boys. Hedonistic? Philosophical? Why not both! The bass bounces and rolls,...
