The tribes converged – though didn’t officially merge – at the start of last week’s episode of “Survivor 46,” resulting in a race against time for one castaway to find an idol, and the standard immunity challenge making half the members safe, complicating the impending vote. And where do players now stand now that they are all on one beach? Let’s break down Season 46 Episode 6, “Cancel Christmas,” as the three individual tribes are no more.
After the shocking blindside of Jemila “Jem” Hussain-Adams on the Siga tribe, Moriah Gaynor felt on the outs as she was the only one who didn’t vote for her, but Siga agreed to put on a united front when the tribes came together for the strategic longevity of all of them, given that it is likely that their five will be going up against the quintet of Nami, leaving the threesome of Yanu in the middle.

On Wednesday’s sixth episode of “Survivor 46,” the three tribes advanced to the “limbo” stage of the new era where they’d compete in randomized groups for immunity and to earn their spot in the soon-to-be-merged tribe. A lopsided, albeit random, rock draw left Moriah Gaynor in one of the vulnerable positions and then her own original Siga tribe joined every other player to unanimously vote her out of the game. Read on for Moriah’s “Survivor 46” exit interview from the end of the episode.
After being blindsided by the other Siga players when they banded together to blindside Jemila “Jem” Hussain-Adams and leave her out of that plan, Moriah knew that she was on the bottom of their tribal alliance going into the merge. And yet, when the three tribes came together, Moriah played along with the Siga story that they all, including Moriah, unanimously voted against Jem and were a united front.

“Survivor” is a game that ends with one person claiming the life-changing $1 million prize, but sometimes the winner is not the one people expect. The title of Sole Survivor is the result of taking out the biggest competitors, being likable in the cast, and appealing to the jury, all while arguing the case of why you’re the most deserving of the win. While many of the champions are well-deserved, at least according to the passionate fans at home, others spark massive debate when Jeff Probst reads their names out loud. Scroll through our photo gallery above (or click here for direct access) where we detail the Top 10 biggest “Survivor” upset winners of all time.

Netflix recently added Survivor Season 32 to its streaming library, introducing a new group of people to the Brains vs. Brawn vs. Beauty cast, including the season’s winner Michele Fitzgerald. Michele is a bit of a controversial figure in the Survivor community. But despite the pushback she received after the season 32 finale aired, Michele has continuously proved why she deserved to win in the years following her first television appearance.

Over the years, many Survivor castaways have had to be pulled from the game for their safety. Some get injured during challenges, while others’ bodies succumb to the elements. Unfortunately for Neal Gottlieb, he had to join the exclusive group of Survivor medical evacuations during season 32, aka Survivor: Kaôh Rōng — Brains vs. Brawn vs. Beauty.

Survivor Season 32 split the show’s 18 castaways into three tribes — Brains, Brawn, and Beauty. And Neal, as an Ice Cream Entrepreneur, fit right in with the Brains tribe on Survivor: Kaôh Rōng — Brains vs. Brawn vs. Beauty.
Neal quickly connected with Aubry Bracco, and the twosome later found themselves in the middle of Liz Markham and Peter Baggenstos vs. Debbie Wanner and Joe del Campo, which helped them survive their first Tribal Council.

After 43 seasons, Survivor has had plenty of champions that fans believe shouldn’t have won the game. Viewers of the CBS reality competition series have strong opinions, so it’s difficult for everyone to agree on whether or not a Sole Survivor is “worthy” of the title. And unfortunately for the Survivor Season 32 winner, their triumph is one of the most controversial decisions in the show’s history.

“Survivor 42” castaway Hai Giang has already had to survive a great deal in his life before even stepping onto the island. As he describes in his CBS interview, the 29-year-old data scientist grew up poor, gay and Asian, traits that were considered “undesirable” (watch below). He adds, “When you get up every day, even though the world tells you you shouldn’t, it makes you resilient.” Get to know all 18 castaways.
The New Orleans native describes himself as a “latchkey kid” as he was coming of age, largely raised by television, especially “Survivor.” One of his favorite former players is Yul Kwon, the winner of “Survivor: Cook Islands.” “Yul was an idol to me growing up because Yul showed that Asian men can be confident, successful and sexy,” Hai describes. “Watching that as a 12-year-old was empowering.”

Hidden Immunity Idols have been a “Survivor” staple since Season 11, “Guatemala,” when Gary Hogeboom found the elusive token. Since then, idols are being used on a much more strategic level, with some finders even playing it on other people in the game. It is an added layer to the game that continues to make players even more paranoid than they already were, fearful of being blindsided by the finder. But who’s found the most idols on “Survivor”? Scroll down for the updated list.
Some “Survivor” contestants are dangerously good at finding idols. Once you find one, it generally becomes easier to know what to look for. Players like Russell Hantz, Tony Vlachos, Tai Trang, Rick Devens and Kelley Wentworth have all attained multiple idols in the same season. Not everyone plays their idol correctly, and some infamously fail to play them at the right time, resulting in their elimination.

Last week’s jam-packed merge/Edge of Extinction extravaganza considered, I think it’s safe to say that we need more Survivor! Sixty minutes just isn’t enough for all the scheming, double-dealing and Probst-ian catchphrases! Imagine a supersized season with 90- or (dare we say it) 120-minute episodes, or at the very least, some Ponderosa-style webisodes. With all of the insanity in play, there’s bound to be enough footage to double, or heck, triple the Survivor glory! Water under the well, I suppose.

Sandra Diaz-Twine was just voted out of “Survivor: Winners at War” in the one of the most cutthroat reality TV blindsides of all time. After a confident Sandra gave her hidden immunity idol to Denise Stapley in exchange for her fire tokens, Denise ended up using the idol to send home the “Survivor” Queen. “And now the question will be, how much gas does Sandra have in her tank?” host Jeff Probst wonders in his weekly recap video (watch above). “Does she want to fight to get back in?” he asks aloud. While a physical show like “Survivor” may appear to favor jock types, some of the best castaways who often thrive the most in the game are the nerds. With strategy dominating the game, it is the brainier among us who stand out from the pack and typically become fan favorites in the process. They are typically described as “superfans” who have seen every episode and studied the game extensively, like Rob Cesternino, who changed how the game was played in “Survivor: The Amazon.” He was such a smart player that he went on to be voted out very early in “All Stars” due to his threat level. Check out our gallery of the Top 18 nerdiest “Survivor” players ever above.

With the dust now settled on “Survivor: Edge of Extinction,” it’s time to assess where Season 38 fits into the legacy of the long-running reality series. The Extinction Island twist was divisive from the start and those who didn’t care for it were enraged to see Chris Underwood, booted on Day 8, return a month later and win after having barely played the active game. Others liked how Extinction Island offered a second chance to players like Rick Devens, who certainly made the most of his return to the game. Vote in the poll below for where “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” places in your overall season rankings.

In recent years the “Survivor” reunion show has slowly been snuffed out before our eyes, with last week’s live “Edge of Extinction” chatfest running for less than 30 minutes. That’s a far cry from the early years of the reality TV show when finale night would conclude with a full one-hour reunion following the two-hour final episode. According to our recent poll, viewers are nearly unanimous that they want “Survivor” to bring back the hour-long reunion show, with 89% voting yes and 11% voting no. Do you agree or disagree with those poll results? Sound off down in the comments section.

The clue was there all along. We “Survivor” fans should have known better. When Extinction Island dweller Chris Underwood (see above) got what I like to call “The Little Mermaid” edit on Season 38’s penultimate episode as he was seen fetchingly perched on a rock while surrounded by water as he read the letter of encouragement he wrote to himself, the jig was up.
The district sales manager from South Carolina had all ready won, despite being the third castaway voted off and only participating in the game for 13 days. Meanwhile, the puckishly amusing TV anchor man from Georgia Rick Devens, the first Extinction returnee who seemed to find an immunity idol every 2 minutes and crushed many an individual immunity challenge, let his guard down and allowed Chris to take control of events.

There are those “Survivor” fans whose dream is to compete in the game one day. Then there are those who, like me, would be satisfied to simply attend the taping of live portion of the finale and gawk at the players that they have been watching for weeks. Well, I can now cross that off my bucket list. I was part of the audience who participated in the three-hour wrap-up of Season 38, aka “Edge of Extinction.”
By now, you probably know that former Extinction Island dweller Chris Underwood somehow managed to win the title of Sole Survivor away from the favorite to take it all, idol-magnet Rick Devens, after only playing only 13 days. Controversial doesn’t even cover that outcome.
But that decision couldn’t spoil my opportunity to gaze upon such fan favorites as the season’s returning veteran players — Joe Anglim, Aubry Bracco, Kelley Wentworth and David Wright.

Are you ready for “the most unpredictable ‘Survivor’ finale ever”? Well, you better be, because that’s exactly how CBS is promoting its three-hour finale event on Wednesday, May 15. In the latest preview trailer (watch above), the only castaway who gets any major screen time is, of course, Rick Devens, the fan-favorite underdog who has an uphill climb to make it to the final tribal council. “I’m so excited!” Rick shouts about making it to the Final 5. “This is a million dollars. I’m trying everything I can.”

Aurora McCreary really, really wanted to be taken on the helicopter/resort reward in the 13th episode of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction,” but challenge winner Gavin Whitson instead invited along Victoria Baamonde and Lauren O’Connell. In the penultimate episode of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction,” the near-unanimous plan was to vote out Rick Devens, but he ruined their easy vote when he won the immunity challenge. The castaways then set their sights on Julie Rosenberg, but Rick bluffed at tribal council that he was going to use his hidden idol on Julie, so Plan C was enacted. That’s when Aurora McCreary was voted out. “It was so predictable” that Rick was bluffing, Aurora proclaimed in her exit interview at the end of the 13th episode. “I can’t understand how anyone fell for that.”

With only two episodes to go, “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” is down to the Final 6 (or 7 if we’re counting on another return). With jury-favorite-apparent Rick Devens as the universal target to eliminate next, other Top 6ers Lauren O’Connell, Victoria Baamonde, Gavin Whitson, Aurora McCreary and Julie Rosenberg head in to the final stretch of the game with only a small target on their own backs. That leaves the door wide open for anyone–including Rick, if he can win some immunities–to carve their path to the win, but it will take a tight and small alliance to make that happen.

“I took my eye off the prize,” confessed Ron Clark after being voted out of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” during a memorable tribal council in which two advantages (a hidden idol and an extra vote) were played. Ron had concocted a diabolical plan in which he gifted his expired advantage menu to Rick Devens, hoping that it would convince him to trust him. Unfortunately for Ron, Rick later found a real immunity idol that ended up saving him from elimination. Scroll down to see Ron’s full “Survivor” exit interview from Season 38, Episode 12.

After being voted out of the 11th episode of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction,” Dan “Wardog” DaSilva made the easy decision to take the torch and head to Extinction Island where he’ll soon have a chance of re-entering the game. Even though he was betrayed by new alliance member Ron Clark, Wardog explained in his exit interview at the end of the show that he had no hard feelings. “Ultimately it came down to Ron tonight. Ron did well, because I would have voted me out too,” Wardog readily admitted.

On Day 1 on Season 38 of “Survivor,” contestant Ron Clark (above) found an envelope labeled “Secret Advantage” under a crate of vegetables while aboard the boat transporting the players to their homes away from home. When he finally had a chance to sneak off by himself to read it, it turned out to be an advantage menu — just the second time such an item has appeared on the show.
There were three options to choose from if and when he decided to use it. Ron could steal the reward won by another tribe after a challenge; get an extra vote at Tribal Council; or he could get individual immunity, which acts like an hidden immunity idol that is played before the votes are read.
But Ron never got any benefit from his find since he had to use it before the third Tribal Council was held — and his Kama tribe never...

“Survivor” is getting down to the nitty-gritty as only eight players remain in the proper game. After a post-merge of the Kama alliance getting picked off one by one, the Manu-turned-Lesu tribe finally lost some players last week and big ones, too — the exit of David Wright and Kelley Wentworth means there are no more returning players in the game. Looking at the edit, the Final 8 have had varying degrees of screen time through the first 10 hours of this season and we now have a pretty good sense of who probably won’t make it to the end and who has a plausible winner’s edit.
Meanwhile, another eight castaways are on Extinction Island getting ready to fight for a chance to get back into the game. It remains to be seen if one of those booted players can make it back in and somehow win the season, but for now,...

Apparently, “Survivor” loyalists still think Joey is amazing.
Of the four veteran players who find themselves in limbo on Extinction Island on Season 38, 42% of the reality show’s fans believe Joe Anglim is the likeliest returning castaway who could re-enter the game. It makes sense, since he is a beast at challenges and he will likely have to win one to before being allowed back in.
That is what newbie Rick Devens had to do in order to re-join the players on the main island after the tribes merged. But these well-liked experienced “Survivors” basically had targets on their backs from the moment they landed on the beach — which is how each of the quartet got blindsided during tribal council.

They knew what they were getting into. They figured they would have huge targets on their backs. But the quartet of returning “Survivor” veterans — Aubry Bracco, Joe Anglim, David Wright and Kelley Wentworth — too often let their guard down when it came to the other less-experienced players, who have blindsided all four of them at tribal council after the 10th episode of Season 38.
But they still might get a second chance after choosing to spend some time on the purgatorial Extinction Island. One newbie player, Rick Devens, already re-entered the game after winning a challenge opposite other residents of the forbidding oasis after the tribal merge. “I’m impressed by the game move of the other players,” Kelley Wentworth admitted after being voted out of the 10th episode of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” by one of her closest allies. “I’m pissed at myself because I had an idol in my pocket. I can’t believe I’m that person. So now I’m that dumb ‘Survivor’ player,” she harrumphed after taking the torch and heading off to Extinction Island. Kelley then shook up the game by telling the Edge of Extinction castaways that Lauren O’Connell has the other immunity idol — might that information come back to haunt Lauren?

Getting to the Final 10 on “Survivor” is certainly a huge accomplishment, but that doesn’t necessarily guarantee you a strong, positive edit on the show. Some “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” contestants have learned this the hard way as their story has gone on the back-burner in favor of their fellow tribemates. That doesn’t mean a few of these unlucky players can’t emerge in the final episodes of the season, but their chances are considerably weaker than others whose stories have been explored throughout.

If you thought last week was crazy, you ain’t seen nothing yet. In CBS’s preview trailer for the 10th episode of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” (watch above), it’s revealed that two castaways will be voted out in two separate tribal councils. With 10 players remaining in the game, it’s anyone’s guess what might happen over the course of this “epic hour,” but Gold Derby’s racetrack odds currently predict that immunity idol buddies Kelley Wentworth and Lauren O’Connell are the most in danger of being sent to Extinction Island.

“Tribal council was a mess!” Those were the first words Julia Carter said after being voted out of the ninth episode of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction.” Julia wasn’t exaggerating. The two-act tribal council was one of the “craziest” of all time, with all 11 remaining players scrambling around and huddling up in what was described by one castaway as a “live” tribal. In the end, Julia received a whopping nine votes, with the other two votes going to Kelley Wentworth (Julia’s vote) and David Wright (Aurora McCreary‘s vote).

“Survivor: Edge of Extinction” has definitely changed the course of the long-running reality show’s history. With two sets of castaways in different locations and varied rules, it is hard to keep track of everyone’s status let alone all the advantages, disadvantages and, especially, the all-important immunity idols. Even on a season with one locale, it can be hard to keep track — as Cirie Fields found out on “Survivor: Game Changers” after she realized that she was the only player at tribal council who didn’t have a helpful advantage in their pocket. And she had played on three other seasons previously.

“Let’s just say, my girl Aubry did well,” Gold Derby’s Susan Wloszczyna tells Marcus James Dixon about Aubry Bracco finding yet another advantage in this week’s episode of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction.” On Extinction Island Aubry was the only person to figure out what the “take a step back” clue referred to, so she was able to find a practice advantage as well as a secret vote that she bestowed to former tribe mate Aurora McCreary. “I like that she gave it to Aurora. That is her buddy,” Susan added. Watch our “Survivor” video recap above for Season 38, Episode 8.

Post-merge on “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” the scores are 2-2 among the vets (Joe Anglim and Aubry Bracco are “out” while Kelley Wentworth and David Wright are still “in”) and 7-5 in terms of original tribes. The Kama members continue to dominate the game and maintain a majority over the five Manu members struggling to survive, but David and his ally Rick Devens, the first to return from Extinction Island after last week’s challenge, have found a relatively safe spot in the middle of the game where they have an idol between them, a positive edit from producers and the favor of Julie Rosenberg, this week’s most powerful player.

In recent years the “Survivor” jury has been composed of anywhere from 8 to 10 ousted castaways, with “Survivor: Ghost Island” clocking in at a record 11 jury votes after a 5-5 tie required the third finalist, Laurel Johnson, to cast the deciding vote between eventual winner Wendell Holland and runner-up Domenick Abbate. That record is about to be shattered. If the rest of the current 38th season of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” plays out according to plan, with a Final 3 and no one else leaving the game, then a whopping 13 jury members will decide the winner.

He is handsome. He is charming. He possesses immense strength and agility. If someone wanted to build a perfect “Survivor” contestant, he just might come out looking and acting like Joe Anglim. He has a social game, he is a self-described “challenge beast” and he has been on the reality show three times. Watching this 29-year-old multimedia artist who is based in Utah is just darn good TV.
But there is just one drawback to being “Amazing Joey.” Once the merge happens each season and there are no more group challenges, including last week on “Edge of Extinction,” he transforms into a liability for the other players and himself. Correct me if I am wrong, but he has never even looked for an immunity idol as insurance when every man and woman is out to keep themselves in the game. It’s Joe himself who wants to be an idol...
