This week, the Number One song in America is a diss track. Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” debuted at the top of the charts, to the surprise of no one who’s seen the track go viral since its release earlier this month. The song is buoyed by a catchy DJ Mustard beat and a slew of unforgettably delivered lyrics by Kendrick — even if the lines are vulgar barbs toward his rival Drake.
What does the record’s success mean? For one, it highlights how desensitized we are as a music-listening public.

Three of this year’s Oscar nominated tunes were penned by Black songwriters: Celeste reaped a bid (along with Daniel Pemberton) for “Hear My Voice” from “The Trial of the Chicago”; D’Mile, recent Grammy champ H.E.R. and Tiara Thomas collaborated on “Fight for You” from “Judas and the Black Messiah”; and supporting actor nominee Leslie Odom Jr. was cited with Nashville based singer/songwriter Sam Ashworth for “Speak Now” from “One Night in Miami.”
The first Black tunesmith to contend for Best Original Song at the Oscars was Quincy Jones who was nominated in 1967 (alongside lyricist Bob Russell) for “The Eyes of Love” from the long-forgotten “Banning.” (Jones earned the first of his four score Oscar nominations that same year for “In Cold Blood.”) He and Russell reaped another bid the following year for the title tune from “For Love of Ivy.” His last nomination to date was in 1985 for...

In the Academy Awards’ 90-year history, just nine black women have won Oscars. But here’s where it gets worse: Only one of those nine won in a non-acting category, Irene Cara, who co-wrote Best Original Song winner “Flashdance… What a Feeling” from “Flashdance” (1983). Cara could get some long overdue company this year from three people — all from the same film, “Black Panther.”
Three of “Black Panther”‘s seven nominations include black women as part of its nominees: Hannah Beachler is up for Best Production Design; Ruth E. Carter earned her third career Best Costume Design bid; and Sza co-wrote Best Original Song contender “All the Stars” with Kendrick Lamar, Sounwave and Anthony Tiffith.
Not only is Beachler the first African-American woman to be nominated for Best Production Design, but she’s the first African-American ever to be shortlisted in the category. Carter broke down that barrier in her category...

In something of an upset, This is America by Childish Gambino won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year, marking Donald Glover’s third award on the evening. The award goes to Donald Glover & Ludwig Goransson, the songwriters, the win no doubt powered by its accompanying groundbreaking video.
Neither was present to accept the award. Song of the Year is a songwriter’s award. A song (singles or tracks) is eligible if it was first released or if it first achieved prominence during the Eligibility Year.
Glover’s dissonant song of commentary about the socio-ecnmc status of black me was made especially controversial bs jarring art-house video which includes moments of abrupt violence. Glover himself has a federal heritage — he was born in the Reagan years at Edwards Air Force Base in 1983. Glover is a multi-threat talent with comedy and acting pursuits. Last year Bruno Mars was the king of the Grammy Awards winning all six of his races. This year, one of the artists he bested for many of those prizes, Kendrick Lamar, leads with a whopping eight nominations. Many of these bids come for his work on the “Black Panther” soundtrack and the chart-topping single “All the Stars.” Likewise, Lady Gaga earned four nominations for “Shallow,” the love ballad from her film “A Star is Born.” Both of their songs also contend at the Academy Awards.
The four general field categories — Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist — are the top prizes at the Grammys. While the nominees are drawn from across a variety of music genres, the winners of these Grammy Awards tend to be the biggest pop and rock acts like Mars, Adele, Taylor Swift, and Mumford and Sons.

Will the highest grossing film of the year “Black Panther” score a Best Picture nomination? It’s a fair question as no Marvel film has ever even been in the conversation. And the question has produced so much turmoil the academy temporarily thought of adding a Best Popular Film category. We should look towards another popular origin story that was not your typical Oscar fare — 1977’s “Star Wars: IV A New Hope” — as our guide towards “Black Panther’s” potential Oscar nomination haul.
George Lucas’s original “Star Wars” spawned a franchise that includes seven prequels and sequels and two spinoffs to date. Luke Skywalker’s origin story maybe outside the Oscars comfort zone but that didn’t stop the film from picking up 10 nominations including Best Picture; Best Director (Lucas); Best Original Screenplay (Lucas); and Best Supporting Actor (Alec Guinness).
It won six below-the line races: Best Film Editing...

One way or another, Lady Gaga is leaving the Golden Globes with a trophy. She’s the front-runner for Best Film Drama Actress for her role as a singer on the rise in “A Star is Born.” There’s a chance she’ll be upset by Glenn Close (“The Wife”), but even if that’s the case, there may be no stopping her in the race for Best Song. Lady Gaga and her “A Star Is Born” character Ally are both Grammy winners, but the latter has won what her portrayer never has: a general field Grammy. That could all change in February, though, thanks to “Shallow.”
“Shallow,” the only eligible track from “A Star Is Born” this Grammy cycle, received four nominations Friday: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop/Duo Group Performance and Best Song Written for Visual Media. Record and Song are two of the four general field Grammy categories, along with Album of the Year and Best New Artist, aka the Big Four — none of which Gaga has won.

In the Golden Globes’ film music nominations, Dolly is in and “Mary” is out — at least in this year’s much-watched Best Song category. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association gave all five slots to stars from the pop, country or hip-hop worlds, with Dolly Parton, Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar, Annie Lennox and Troye Sivan making the final ballot for the film tunes they co-wrote.
All have been substantially talked up in the awards conversation, so none was a complete surprise — but it was an upset to see a nomination for a newcomer like Sivan come at the expense of a nod for any of the songs from “Mary Poppins Returns.” The musical was expected to be a front-runner in the song category here as well at the Oscars, where it still presumably stands a strong chance.

Six weeks out from release, and there’s a real groundswell of support for Black Panther.
The excitement is palpable – infectious, even – as Marvel prepares to launch its first McU feature based on a black superhero. His name? T’Challa, the would-be king of Wakanda who must overcome personal rivalries (read: Erik Killmonger) and inner conflict on his path to the famous African throne.
It’s a power struggle we’ve seen ten times before, but what makes Black Panther so special is the character’s 50-year stint in Marvel Comics, during which time he has become one of the industry’s undisputed staples. And on February 16th, he’ll finally be given his cinematic due. The timing is rather perfect, too, given Marvel has decided to launch Ryan Coogler’s standalone pic at a time when the United States will be celebrating Black History Month.
Indeed, that excitement is there for all to see,...

Infinity War notwithstanding, Black Panther is arguably the most-anticipated comic book movie of 2018.
Sure, film fans are already keeping one ear to the ground in anticipation of Venom, Aquaman, Deadpool 2 and X-Men: Dark Phoenix, but when it comes to Black Panther, there’s really something special about Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s beloved creation.
He is, in essence, Marvel royalty – a hero with a steadfast moral code and more integrity and righteousness than the last ten Avengers combined. Barring Captain America, of course, who is almost honorable to a fault. Expect those two costumed crusaders to share the screen this May, but with Black Panther now only six weeks away, Marvel’s hard-wired marketing machine has all hands at the pump ahead of T’Challa’s arrival.
Case in point: today brings forth an all-new international trailer, while the eagle-eyed users of Reddit have also uncovered the film’s sweet new logo.
