When Bhavnani first wrote a horror story ‘Bearlike Man’ that was selected at Bifan (Korea), the largest genre festival in Asia, she found herself to be the first Indian woman director to be on the platform ever.
"We were practically non-existent in that space. Over the three decades I looked at, 9.9 per cent of directors were women. Horror comes with just 5.9 per cent of directors being women and Sci-fi – 2.8 per cent. I find this statistic offensive. Wench 2022 showcased 47 horror /sci-fi/fantasy films — 43 of them directed by women," she tells Ians.
Believing that India has not really explored horror in its truest potential or form, the filmmaker feels there is no better medium to highlight social change than this genre.
"And there are so many different ways to make them instead of the cliche knee-jerk horror that we all know of," she asserts.

Chhorri ke peeche kya hai???!!!! An urgent message on female foeticide is tucked away in the ghagra folds of this unusual flawed yet interesting shiver-giver. Almost the entire film is set in deserted yawning stretch of a sugarcane field where the silences are punctured by eerie sounds of little children with big wide eyes playing and laughing in a deceptive show of normalcy.
As this low-budget mayhem-drama tells us, quiet places secrete deep disturbances. Right. But we don’t really get to penetrate the heart of the horror. Director Vishal Furia’s faithful adaptation of the Marathi film Lapachhapi is unable to convey the fearful ambience of the original.

Nushrratt Bharuccha has shown she can play characters in a wide variety of film genres in films like Love Sex Aur Dholka, Pyaar Ka Punchnama, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Dream Girl, and Chhalaang. She showcases this once again with her newest release by playing the lead role in the paranormal horror film Chhorii. In our recent interview, Nushrratt revealed that Chhorii was genuinely exhausting but also very artistically satisfying, but you can hear more on that in a few lines.
Directed by Vishal Furia, Chhorii, is a remake of the Marathi film Lapachhapi tells a haunting tale of a modern, young couple, Sakshi and Hemant, based in the heartland of India. Sakshi, who is eight months pregnant, and Hemant are forced by challenging life circumstances to seek shelter in an isolated house surrounded by large sugarcane fields. The house is inhabited by an old couple who seem to know more than they tell.

Over-reliance on a spooky score and clunky pacing mean that Vishal Furia’s remake of his own film simply reiterates the original’s dubious talking points
Vishal Furia’s long-awaited Hindi remake of his Marathi-language horror Lapachhapi from 2017 stays true to the original’s spirit, marrying the psychological uncertainties of pregnancy with the eerie atmosphere of rural isolation. Buried in the middle of a vast sugarcane field where one can get lost among the towering reeds is a simple house that doubles as a temporary hideaway from debt collectors for young city couple Hemant (Saurabh Goyal) and eight-month pregnant Sakshi (Nushrratt Bharuccha)
The place actually belongs to their chauffeur and his wife, whose initial hospitality goes along with gendered prejudices. They insist, for example, that Sakshi should eat only after her husband has finished his meal. As strange visions and noises soon abound, the refuge becomes a site of horror,...

The Cinema Travellers — directed by Shirley Abraham and Amit Madheshiya
Last year I had the pleasure of screening the Liff 2016 presentation of the Bengali film Cinemawala, which presented a fictional view of the decline of the traditional Indian cinema hall in the face of changing technology and an ever growing market in pirated films. This year, Liff 2017 presents the documentary The Cinema Travellers, directed by Shirley Abraham and Amit Madheshiya, which touches on a similar theme: the decline of travelling film projectors and their operators, again in face of a changing technological landscape.
The film made a stunning debut at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016 and has gone on to screen to enthusiastic and appreciate audiences...

Film Bazaar: Experts also praise Film Bazaar Co-Production Market’s new video pitching style.
Buyers and festival programmers were buzzing about a number of titles at Film Bazaar 2016, including Kabir Mehta’s Buddhagram, an inventive documentary with risqué scenes from the life of a flamboyant cricketer.
Another hot title, also in Film Bazaar Recommends, is Atanu Mukherjee’s Unknown Faces (Rukh), a Hindi-language drama about an 18-year-old boy dealing with a family tragedy.
Three documentaries making waves with international visitors are Vrinda Samartha’s English-language Limitless about female marathon runners; Rupak Das’ A Dream Document about young Mumbaikars who dream of stardom; and serial killer story The Karma Killings by Ram Devineni and Tushar Parekh.
Festival programmers were also keen on My Son Is Gay [pictured], a Tamil fiction feature by Lokesh R; and Marathi-language socially relevant horror film Hide N Seek (Lapachhapi) by Vishal Furia.
