Add Maya Rudolph to the list of celebrities voicing their support for pop star Chappell Roan and her outspoken take on the perils of fandom. Roan has been vocal about upholding boundaries with fans, and just this week revealed that she has been dealing with an active stalker.
Like Roan, Rudolph said she has encountered her share of people in every day life who feel entitled to interrupt her at inopportune times and harass her because of her recognizability. When Variety sat down with Rudolph in late August for a cover story interview (read it here), it was just days after Roan had made a series of TikTok posts sharing her feelings on the expectations that fans have of her — and the artificial sense of familiarity that comes with being famous in this digital age.

Chappell Roan is opening up about her experiences with a stalker and other aggressive fans following her strong message asking people to respect her boundaries.
In a Rolling Stone profile, the pop star shared she has a stalker, who she had met in her home state of Missouri. The situation had grown severe, as the person had been seen at her family’s home and made their way to Roan’s hotel room while the singer was in New York. “So now I have to have security,” she revealed. “It’s so lame.”
This hasn’t been the only alarming incident she has faced recently. Roan said that when she traveled to Seattle in July, some fans managed to get ahold of her flight details and waited for her at the airport. A man grew aggressive after Roan refused to sign his autograph until police had to intervene. The same...

More than 250 artists, including Billie Eilish, Green Day, Sia and Cyndi Lauper, signed a letter Thursday urging the Senate Commerce Committee to support a bill that would reform the ticketing system for live events.
The Fans First Act, which was initially introduced in December by Sens. John Cornyn, Amy Klobuchar, Marsha Blackburn, Peter Welch, Roger Wicker and Ben Ray Lujan, aims to address flaws in the current live event ticketing system. The bill hopes to increase transparency in ticket sales, protect consumers from fake or overpriced tickets, and hold those who engage in illegal ticket sale practices accountable.
“As artists and members of the music community, we rely on touring for our livelihood, and we value music fans above all else,” the letter said in part. “We are joining together to say that the current system is broken: predatory resellers and secondary platforms engage in deceptive ticketing practices to inflate...

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: A Very Sapphic Second Coming
Given the choice to watch Jesus fight a pack of lesbian vampires or an honest-to-God homophobe, I will almost always choose the lesbian vampires. It’s not that I wouldn’t like to see an intolerant bigot get roundhouse-kicked by the Prince of Peace; in fact, that image is particularly tempting ahead of Easter weekend during an election year.
But as an ex-Catholic school girl born of the “Twilight” generation, my unquenchable thirst for horny vampires supersedes my taste for virtue signaling most of the time.

Following the blockbuster success of Barbie, Margot Robbie is tackling another famous IP. As first reported by Jeff Sneider and confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, a movie based on the popular video game franchise The Sims is currently being shopped to Hollywood studios by Robbie and her LuckyChap production company.
Kate Herrnon, who helmed the first season of Loki on Disney+, is on board to direct the film, and is also co-writing the screenplay with Briony Redman.
Similar to Barbie, The Sims has no real narrative or plot to go off of. Even so, studios no doubt have faith in Robbie, who, along with director/writer Greta Gerwig, turned Barbie into a billion dollar film franchise. A bidding war between studios and streams is unfolding as we speak.
As an added bonus, plenty of musicians are noted fans of The Sims, including Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker, Japanese Breakfast, and Snail Mail,...

Stars are sharing their support for a ceasefire in Gaza at the 2024 Oscars on Sunday (March 10) at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
Several celebrities were seen wearing bright red circle pins designed by Artists4Ceasefire, which are representing a call for aid to the area and the release of “all hostages.”
“The pin symbolizes collective support for an immediate and permanent cease-fire, the release of all of the hostages and for the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza,” Artists4Ceasefire said in a news release, via Nyt. “Compassion must prevail,” the release continued.
On the 2024 Grammys red carpet, Boygenius members Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker wore the same red pins.

Hundreds of protesters have shut down a major section of Hollywood during the Oscars red carpet, turning Hollywood’s biggest night into a traffic nightmare. With just a few minutes ahead of the telecast’s scheduled start time, much of the ballroom is uncharacteristically empty and people are running to their seats.
There was a growing sense of anxiety from production staffers and publicists on the red carpet that tonight’s Oscars will not start on time due to the gridlock. The broadcast itself kicked off five minutes late.
Protesters shut down Sunset Boulevard between Vine Street and La Brea Avenue. They marched down the street with signs that read “No awards for genocide” and drove school buses covered with Palestinian flags. Police ordered the protest to disperse and waited on Sunset Boulevard with battering rams.
Executives, such as Bob Iger, waited an hour to walk the red carpet due to the traffic jam.

Kristen Stewart wanted to do the “gayest fucking thing” for her March Rolling Stone cover.
In the cover story, Stewart talks about her desire to flip gender roles with her spread. “If I go through the entire Twilight series without ever doing a Rolling Stone cover, it’s because the boys were the sex symbols,” she says. “Now I want to do the gayest fucking thing you’ve ever seen in your life. If I could grow a little mustache, if I could grow a fucking happy trail and unbutton my pants, I would. Guys — I’m sorry — but their fucking pubes are shoved in my face constantly, and I’m like, ‘Ummmm, bring it in.'”
The photos feature a mullet-clad Stewart wearing jock straps and basketball shorts, shot in a way that has more in common with Jeremy Allen White’s Calvin Klein campaign than Rolling Stone’s past bikini-clad covers.

Taylor Swift receives the award for Best Pop Vocal Album at The 66th Annual Grammy Awards
Women absolutely dominated the 2024 Grammys, from winning the top awards to delivering the most memorial performances of the February 4th broadcast. Miley Cyrus took home her first-ever Grammy wins, while Taylor Swift made Grammy Awards history for the most Album of the Year wins ever.
Swift also made Swifties worldwide happy by announcing she’ll release her 11th album, The Tortured Poets Department, on April 19, 2024.
Tracy Chapman brought down the house with a stunning performance of “Fast Cars” alongside Luke Combs. Joni Mitchell earned a rousing ovation for her first performance on the Grammy stage, singing “Both Sides Now” while backed by Brandi Carlile, Allison Russell, Sistastrings, Lucius, Jacob Collier, and Blake Mills. And Celine Dion, who is suffering from stiff person syndrome, put in a surprise appearance as presenter of the Album of the Year award.

It must have been a surreal night at the Grammy Awards for boygenius, who earned wins in three categories. But what was truly surreal was the moment the trio ran to the stage to accept the Best Rock Performance trophy, all while the house band played Mr. Bungle’s wonderfully eccentric tune “Carousel.”
The bizarre moment happened during the “Premiere Ceremony,” which took place before the main nationally televised event. In presenting the Best Rock Performance category, Rufus Wainwright announced the winners as boygenius, who beat out Arctic Monkeys, Black Pumas, Foo Fighters, and Metallica for the award.
The Grammy band then kicked in to the Mr. Bungle song, and after a few moments, the members of boygenius — Lucy Dacus, Julien Baker, and Phoebe Bridgers — came running down the aisle to accept the award.

While six-time Grammy nominees Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish and Miley Cyrus won multiple awards and, in the case of Swift, made history, at the 2024 Grammys, fellow six-time nominees and past Grammy winners Olivia Rodrigo and Jon Batiste each went home empty-handed despite their half-dozen nominations apiece. Batiste even won album of the year in 2022 and some prognosticators thought he could emerge victorious for the top prize despite the strong female presence among this year’s nominees and winners.
Instead, Taylor Swift became the first performer to win album of the year four times with Midnights, and she announced a new album would be coming in a couple of months, giving her another shot at more Grammys gold.
Fellow multiple nominee Lana Del Rey, up for five awards, was also shut out, despite nods in a number of the Grammys’ top categories.

It was six years ago when former Recording Academy CEO Neil Portnow told journalists backstage at the Grammys in 2018 that women needed to “step up” for their representation at the show after only men won out in the major categories. Phoebe Bridgers hasn’t forgotten.
“I have something to say about women,” Bridgers said after Rolling Stone asked her and her fellow Boygenius members Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus about women shaping the future of rock music when they came to the Grammy press room. “The ex-president of the Recording Academy,...

Phoebe Bridgers did not mince words when talking to reporters backstage at the Grammys, calling out the former head of the Recording Academy after he was recently accused of rape.
Bridgers, who appeared in the Grammys press room alongside her Boygenius bandmembers Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus following their win for best rock performance, was asked about the future of rock and women excelling in the genre.
“I have something to say about women,” Bridgers responded. “The ex-president of the Recording Academy, Neil Portnow, said that if women want to be nominated and win Grammys that they should step up. He’s also being accused of sexual violence. And to him I’d like to say I know you’re not dead yet, but when you are, rot in piss.”

Metallics ruled the red carpet at the 2024 Grammys, almost from the very first moment.
Dua Lipa — a double nominee for “Dance the Night” from Barbie The Album — turned up early on the 2024 Grammys red carpet because she was the broadcast’s opening act and immediately set the night’s style tone in a silver-fringed gown by creative director Nicolas di Felice for Courrèges, paired with impressive jewels by Tiffany & Co.
That focus on metals continued in elegant and artful ways. The Grammys have always been the odd duck, fashion-wise, of the awards season, and that’s meant only as a compliment. On music’s biggest night, attendees embrace the essence of artistry and creativity and that extends to their sartorial choices. While other awards shows largely exude elegance and occasionally a splash of grandeur, the Grammys are about exhibiting a musician’s mettle.

Annie Lennox called for a ceasefire in Gaza during her tribute to Sinéad O’Connor at the Grammys.
After performing “Nothing Compares to U” on Sunday, the singer became the first artist to call for a ceasefire in Gaza at a major awards show this year.
“Artists for a ceasefire. Peace in the world,” Lennox said with her fist in the air, as an image of O’Connor displayed in the background.
Fans celebrated the Eurythmics icon for making the bold statement and honoring O’Connor in the “most meaningful and honest way.

All signs pointed to the music industry’s most high-profile women grabbing the headlines — and likely the majority of trophies — at Feb. 4’s 66th annual Grammy Awards, and by the end of the night women artists had won the top four awards of the night, with album of the year going to Taylor Swift, song of the year to Billie Eilish, record of the year to Miley Cyrus and best new artist to Victoria Monét. Indeed, female nominees won all of the night’s televised awards.
On the red carpet, where metals were a major trend, style standouts include Cyrus in a custom Maison Margiela naked dress made of hundreds of gold safety pins; Dua Lipa rocking a custom silver gown by Courrèges; the boygenius trio of Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus in matching Thom Browne white suits; and Monét, who coordinated her bronze gown with the outfit worn by her daughter Hazel.

The 2024 Grammy Awards ceremony is being held this weekend and we’re predicting the winners in all of the major categories!
Sza leads the pack this year with nine nominations.
In general, women are totally crushing it: Sza, Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish, and Miley Cyrus all dominated the biggest categories. Jon Batiste is actually the only man in the Record of the Year and Album of the Year categories.
Taylor has a chance at setting a record for most Album of the Year wins if she picks up the award for Midnights. She currently is tied for the most wins in the category with three previous wins!

The boys are going out of town — but just for a while. While performing a secret acoustic show in Los Angeles on Thursday, boygenius announced they’re going on hiatus.
“This is our last show, and we’re feeling it,” Lucy Dacus told the crowd at the Smell, later noting that the closer “Not Strong Enough” would be their last song. Julien Baker then corrected, “Not ever.” Fan accounts spread the news on social media, but Rolling Stone has received official confirmation of the band’s hiatus.

A banner year for indie rock supergroup boygenius continues with a stripped-back version of Shania Twain’s 1997 hit, “You’re Still The One.” The trio consisting of Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus performed the classic single during a recent appearance on BBC Radio 1.
On the soulful track, Bridgers and Baker accompany the group’s harmonies with their guitar and mandolin (the instrument that was featured in the original version), respectively. Bridgers and Dacus each took a verse, with Baker taking over during the song’s final chorus.

Dave Grohl nearly played a pretty significant role in boygenius’ debut album cycle, and we’re not just talking about that time the trio dressed up as Nirvana. It’s no secret that Julien Baker knows how to orchestrate a killer collab. The boygenius bandmember’s latest joint effort came as a surprise to some lucky concertgoers on Friday night, as Baker joined Touché Amoré onstage for their set opening for Deafheaven at The Novo in Los Angeles.

A new crowd pleaser has made it to the Paramore set list. The band live debuted their single “Thick Skull” at the Spark Arena in Auckland, New Zealand, on Sunday night. The audience waved their hands in the air as frontwoman Hayley Williams prompted, “Come on out with your hands up.”
The song is the emotional closer of their latest LP, This Is Why. Paramore performed the song halfway through their Nov. 19 set.
This Is Why is Paramore’s sixth studio album, and their first since 2017’s transformative After Laughter.

Continuing her annual tradition of releasing holiday charity singles, Phoebe Bridgers has recruited fellow boygenius members Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker along with the Irish folk duo Ye Vagabonds for a cover of the popular traditional ballad “The Parting Glass.” Stream it below.
All net proceeds from the track will go to the Aisling Project, an after school intervention program that works with children and young people growing up in a disadvantaged area of Dublin. The charity was chosen by the Estate of the late Sinéad O’Connor, who recorded her own version of the song in 2002.
“We are absolutely thrilled that boygenius have chosen to give proceeds from the release to Aisling Project,” said Project Leader Mícheál Clear in a press statement. “It’s an absolute privilege to be associated with the stunningly beautiful homage to Sinead O’Connor and we can’t possibly thank boygenius enough.”

One week before Coachella, earlier this spring, the team behind New York City-based jewelry maker Catbird started working on a special last-minute custom project. The result: a set of yellow gold lapel pins for boygenius — a.k.a., the supergroup featuring Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus.

boygenius showed why they’re deserving of seven Grammy nominations with a pair of thrilling performances on this weekend’s episode of Saturday Night Live.
The dynamic trio of Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus, and Phoebe Bridgers showcased their debut full-length, the record, with renditions of “Not Strong Enough” and “Satanist.”
In an apparent nod to The Beatles’ famed appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, boygenius and their backing band wore matching black suits and ties. Speaking of their backing band, Jay Som played bass on “Not Strong Enough” and percussion on “Satanist.”
boygenius also appeared in a sketch alongside host Timothée Chalamet in which they all spoofed pop musician Troye Sivan.

Is Troye Sivan more than just… “gay-famous”?
“Saturday Night Live” made that case on the fourth episode of Season 49 when Timothée Chalamet, making his second appearance as a host in Studio 8H, took on the lithe, blond-headed pop star … albeit as a sleep demon terrorizing Sarah Sherman. In the sketch, Chalamet dances like the Australian pop star from his music video for “Got Me Started” and flashes red undies alongside musical guests boygenius.
Meanwhile, Chalamet’s musical monologue in the cold open featured the “Call Me By Your Name” Oscar nominee singing in Willy Wonka tenor about the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike, which last week saw actors go back to work after a 118-day stoppage. “Come with me, and you’ll be in a world of shameless self-promotion. It’s Ok, I can say that my new film ‘Wonka’ is out in theaters December 15.”

Timothée Chalamet embraced his inner-twink while hosting the Nov. 11 episode of “Saturday Night Live,” in a sketch in which the Oscar-nominated actor played openly gay Australian pop star Troye Sivan.
The sketch involved a woman (played by cast member Sarah Sherman) complaining to her doctor (played by cast member Bowen Yang) that she’s been seeing a mysterious figure in her sleep every night. When the doctor uses a new therapy to conjure the image while the woman is awake, Chalamet appears in a white tank-top, baggy blue pants and wavy blond hair.
He then breaks into a version of the choreography from Sivan’s recent hit “Got Me Started,” in which the singer at one point flashes his red briefs to the camera while — there’s no other way to report this — wiggling his butt.
“What are you? Are you a demon?!” the woman asks her vision.

During his second stint as host of Saturday Night Live, Timothée Chalamet portrayed a wide range of musicians, from Willy Wonka during his singing monologue to the godawful SoundCloud rapper Smoke Chedda Tha A$$ Getta during a “Rap Roundtable” sketch. And then, seemingly out of nowhere, he popped up in a tank top as pop star and The Idol actor Troye Sivan.
The sketch opens with Bowen Yang’s doctor interviewing his patient, played by Sarah Sherman, about why she can’t sleep at night and suffers from sleep paralysis.
