Nurys Mateo had what many fans of The Challenge might call a breakout performance in the recent Battle For a New Champion season.
While Nurys didn’t enter the game as a rookie, she was entering her second season, and this time, she had to fight against tougher odds.
Nurys won multiple eliminations to earn her spot in the Season 39 final, something no other finalists could say they did.
While she finished second, fans praised Nurys for rising to the occasion throughout the season, including standing up to and calling out her opponents.
She also found love during the filming of the season, as she and showmance Horacio Gutierrez have continued dating beyond MTV’s show.
Thanks to the above, Nurys established herself as a new fan-favorite competitor on MTV’s show. She also recently won multiple awards for Season 39, setting a new record.

MTV’s The Challenge: Battle for a New Champion is finally here, and we can’t wait to see how it all goes down with a cast full of contestants who’ve never won. This season, players who’ve never become Challenge champions get their fair shot at winning — and there’s an entirely new format they’ll have to follow. Here’s how The Challenge Season 39 works, plus information on the season’s biggest twist.
MTV’s ‘The Challenge: Battle for a New Champion’ has a new format
MTV’s The Challenge Season 39 brings an entirely new concept, format, and twist. As a longtime fan of the MTV series, I enjoy seeing veteran players take on newbies, as it’s always nice to see familiar faces and old feuds burn brightly in a new season. However, fans (myself included) must get used to an entirely new cast with season 39, Battle for a New Champion.

The Challenge: USA only featured six vets, alongside players from CBS shows Big Brother, Survivor, and The Amazing Race, but three of them made it to the final. It was a two-day final, and Cory Wharton reached the flag after a tough first half after winner Chris Underwood. Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio arrived after female winner Desi Williams to cap off a 10-mile race for the second day. Wharton and Devenanzio look back on the season, compare it to MTV‘s Challenges, and more. Congratulations to both of you for finishing the final, even though you didn’t win. Cory Wharton: I beat Johnny. Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio: You know what? Yes, he did. And I believe in moral victories, and after what I had to go through this season, just to make it to a final for me ...

For Cory, coming in second place for the third time in his “Challenge” career was a tough pill to swallow. Day 1 of the final got off to a rocky start, with the competitor losing all four “Trials,” which earned him a five minute penalty at Day 2’s starting line. “I put a lot of work into ‘The Challenge,'” he explains. “Leaving the family and all of the gym sessions beforehand…throughout the whole season you want to go to the finals. So far, The Challenge: USA winners have been “Survivor strong,” between the first two seasons. In Season 1, it was Danny McCray and Sarah Lacina who were the only ones to finish the final. And now, in Season 2, Chris Underwood and Desi Williams each took home $250,000. “We’re just trying to keep the train rolling,” Underwood says. It was a two-day final, the first of which consisted of trials that tested the players’ Strength, Smarts, Skills, and Steel Stomachs. The second was a 10-mile race, with a few challenges along the way. In the end, Underwood reached the flag first and Williams third (and first of the women). Below, Underwood and Williams take us inside that final. Michele Fitzgerald lucked out, for the most part, in playing both the Survivor and vets side in The Challenge: USA Season 2… until she didn’t. After doing what was best for her game with the previous vote and not putting Tori Deal‘s name in the hopper (but rather Chris Underwood‘s) and lying to Desi Williams and Chanelle Howell, Michele was one of the players nominated for elimination this week. Cassidy Clark, with seven votes, was the one whose name came out of the hopper, and she beat Michele in Hot Wheel: They had to use a steering wheel to light their color targets. Here, Michele talks about her time on The Challenge: USA, why you shouldn’t expect to see much different about her when she competes in Battle for a New Champion (premiering October 25 on MTV), and more. It only took one vote to send Alyssa Lopez home in The Challenge: USA Season 2. In “Operation Hat Trick,” named after the vets’ big move, the focus turned from vets vs. rookies to Big Brother vs. Survivor. After Green Team won the daily and nominated Chris Underwood and Cassidy Clark for elimination, Johnny “Bananas” DeVenanzio, Tori Deal, Josh Martinez, Cory Wharton, and Faysal Shafaat put five names in a hat and randomly picked one as their votes. Initially, 10 individuals qualified for the event, but various circumstances reduced their numbers before and during the final.
Ultimately it left two cast members as the season’s winners due to the field of competitors becoming fewer and fewer as the final went on.
However, several questionable situations resulted in a few competitors getting eliminated from the running.
Based on recent comments on social media, Angela Rummans may have a gripe with how things were set up or explained.
This report will contain spoilers regarding who competed in the final, who got ousted for different reasons, and who won the event.

Big Brother was one of four CBS reality TV shows that brought cast members to The Challenge: USA, a spinoff of MTV’s popular competition show.
Among those Big Brother stars was David Alexander, who originally appeared in Season 21 of the CBS show, then returned for Season 22, aka All Stars.
David didn’t have the best showing during his original reality TV show, becoming the first player evicted in Bb 21. He fared slightly better in Bb 22, as the ninth player evicted and got onto the All Stars jury.
However, his appearance as an underdog who defied the odds on The Challenge: USA may have boosted his status in the reality TV world.
He recently opened up about how he’s been training hard to appear on The Challenge again, with three potential shows he could go on.

The competitors arrived back at the compound to start Episode 10 with Sarah Lacina celebrating her elimination win. She has 10,000 in her personal bank account and is eligible to compete in the final.
Competitors knew the final was approaching, so everyone strategized ahead of the daily challenge and next elimination, which would feature the men.
Sarah spoke about the Fab Five alliance ending after she had to eliminate Cashay Proudfoot in the last episode. The other members of the alliance still there included Justine Ndiba, Cayla Platt, and Desi Williams. Still, everyone had different loyalties to worry about and getting to the final.
In another scene, Ben Driebergen was hanging out with Enzo Palumbo, whom he admitted to becoming friends with during a confessional interview. The remaining Survivor men realized that...

Survivor star Tyson Apostol is among the competitors in The Challenge: USA. Pic credit: MTV’s The Challenge/YouTube
A new sneak peek clip for The Challenge: USA, Episode 10, has arrived, and based on the footage, the competition is only getting tougher as Tj Lavin’s final approaches!
Only 12 cast members remain in the game, but only a portion of those individuals are likely to compete in that final. Just a few are likely to be crowned the winners for the season, though.
One of the favorites from the start has been former Survivor winner Tyson Apostol, although he’s yet to face elimination or the prospect of competing in one at The Arena.
That could change based on the latest preview footage, which has Tyson struggling with the upcoming daily challenge.
With a men’s elimination looming, will the Survivor star finally have to prove himself at The Arena,...

Big Brother star Alyssa Lopez appears during The Challenge: USA, Episode 9. Pic credit: Paramount+
The ratings are in for The Challenge: USA, Episode 9, and the numbers showed a significant decrease from the previous week’s installment.
In the ninth episode, which aired on Wednesday, September 1, viewers saw the second-straight episode with competitors going into the daily challenge on their own rather than with teammates.
That was due to host Tj Lavin getting rid of The Algorithm in the previous episode. The special computer program randomly assigned each competitor a new partner every episode to make things interesting, but finally came to an end with the final approaching.
Episode 9 was also the second-straight individual elimination, but this time it was two women competing at The Arena, with one getting sent home for the season.
Ahead of that big event, a rivalry intensified between two particular castmates who both are intent on...
