Harvey Guillén, who portrays Guillermo in What We Do In The Shadows, has given us a hint of what’s coming up in the sixth and final season for the show and his character.
“We start where we left off and sometimes dreams and aspirations don’t turn out the way we want them to, (spoiler alert if you haven’t seen Season 5)”, he told Deadline on the red carpet of the Critics Choice Awards, last night where he was nominated in the supporting actor category. “But I think that’s the whole point of rebirth right? It’s like a renaissance. It’s happening again and you take a new direction, new ideas, new approach so I’m really excited for the audience to see a new layer to Guillermo.
Asked what he’ll take away most from playing Guillermo? “It’s never too late to find yourself. It...

We’re a bit over halfway through the year and 2023 has had its share of great movies already. Festivals like Sundance and SXSW kicked things off early with several strong new films, and the summer movie season has offered its fair share of Best of the Year contenders.
But what makes a movie one of the best? It’s a strange alchemy, from actors to script to story, and of course, taste is subjective. But TheWrap’s film team feels these following 21 films are some of the cream of the crop, with justification for why each should be in any conversation about the “best films of 2023.”
Behold, some of our favorite movies of 2023 so far.

New voting methods will likely yield surprise Emmy nomination inclusions (and exclusions) this year. There could also be historic representation in several areas, with ethnicity, age and decades-old records shattered.
HBO is no stranger to setting Emmy records. The fantasy epic “Game of Thrones” currently holds multiple records, including the most overall nominations for a drama series at 161 across its eight seasons. The network is celebrating its 50th anniversary and a new Max branding — so naturally, it wants more. If the early projections are accurate and it lands four drama series noms — “House of the Dragon,” “The Last of Us,” “The White Lotus” and last year’s winner, “Succession,” — HBO would tie the record for most series noms by a network in a single year, held by NBC since 1992.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Beau Is Afraid (Joaquin Phoenix)
Ari Aster’s brazenly original three-hour odyssey Beau Is Afraid is, refreshingly, the kind of film where it seems no notes were given––or at least the director had the creative control to reject them. Jumping from some of the most brilliant dark comedy in cinema as of late to a boldly conceived existential journey to an emotionally rife reckoning with mother issues, this Charlie Kaufman-esque journey of the mind packs in quite a lot. Even at its most unwieldy, Aster’s film is continued proof that Joaquin Phoenix––brilliant here, at the center of every scene––is the rare breed of actor seeking new challenges with each performance. – Jordan R.

Kelvin Harrison Jr commands the screen in Stephen Williams’s brashly anachronistic drama about the French composer, violin virtuoso and champion fencer Joseph Bologne
In 1985, Miloš Forman’s screen adaptation of Peter Shaffer’s stage play Amadeus swept the Academy Awards, winning eight Oscars, including best picture. In that acclaimed film, F Murray Abraham’s Antonio Salieri seethed at the divine gift bestowed upon Tom Hulce’s “vulgar” Mozart – a rapscallion whom God appears to have mischievously made his instrument on Earth.
In the new biographical drama Chevalier, from writer Stefani Robinson (a Writers Guild of America and Emmy award winner for the TV series Atlanta) and director Stephen Williams, the polarities are reversed, with Mozart finding his celebrated genius overshadowed by that of a rival. That this rival would later be reductively referred to as the “Black Mozart” adds a further turn of the screw, although according to Bill Barclay,...

Speaking to the cast, including Harrison Jnr, Boynton, and Weaving, we chat about the lure of the story and the script, the history lesson they all learned as part of the process, being part of the sumptuous designs, dress, and environments of the 18th century, why the story is timely and ripe for discovery and much more in-between. Kelvin Harrison Jr plays the Caribbean-born maestro, once declared ‘the most accomplished man in Europe’, who takes on Mozart in a duel-by-violin
Period drama’s narrow focus on telling and re-telling the same stories has, historically at least, deprived audiences of some rip-roaring screen fare. That’s now changing, as evidenced by this film about 18th-century Parisian polymath Joseph Bologne Aka Chevalier de Saint-Georges. As played by Kelvin Harrison Jr, this fascinating fellow escaped a Caribbean slave plantation – his mother was a Senegalese-African woman; his father her enslaver – to reach the highest echelons of French society. There he excelled as a champion fencer, composer and virtuoso violinist, described by US founding father John Adams as “the most accomplished man in Europe”.

After posting giant per screen numbers at four theaters last weekend, A24’s Beau Is Afraid jumps to 926 for the distributor’s third outing with Ari Aster. It’s a very different film from his horror favorites Hereditary and Midsommar but one the distributor hopes will cement the director’s place as a modern auteur.

Beau is scary in parts, like an opening Scorsese described as “the best scene I’ve seen of its kind. The story is based on real life biracial fop named Joseph Bologne (Kelvin Harrison Jr.), the Chevalier of St. Georges … which is equivalent to an English knight. This man did it all, he was a champion fencer, as well as a violinist and composer, and his main goal was to be the conductor for the Paris opera, under the auspice of Marie Antoinette (Lucy Boynton). But he’s still a black man in a white society, which is he is reminded of daily, especially as he starts a love affair with the opera singer Marie-Josephine (Samara Weaving).

Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges was a virtuoso violinist, a champion fencer, and a free man of color included in the highest echelons of power in the court of Marie Antionette. And yet, to most people, he is completely unknown. It’s something that director Stephen Williams and screenwriter Stefani Robinson wanted to rectify with their feature film, “Chevalier,” which tracks Joseph Bologne’s life at the French court.
“It felt like a tall tale,” Robinson told TheWrap. She first came to discover Bologne’s life after reading Gabriel Banat’s biography on him and crafted a script from there. It was Robinson’s script that emotionally resonated with both Williams and star Samara Weaving. “Stephanie Robinson’s writing really is what made me want to jump at it and push to be in it,” Weaving said. “I couldn’t believe that I hadn’t heard of this story.”

It's a historical meet-cute for the ages. In this Popsugar-exclusive clip from the new historical drama "Chevalier," Joseph Bologne, aka Chevalier de Saint-Georges (Kelvin Harrison Jr.), meets Marie-Josephine de Montalembert (Samara Weaving) at a party held by none other than Marie Antoinette (Lucy Boynton). Joseph is immediately smitten, but Marie-Josephine is already married.
"Chevalier" is based on the true story of Bologne, the illegitimate son of a French plantation owner and a woman he had enslaved. At a young age, Joseph's father took him from his home in Guadeloupe to France for him to be educated, separating Joseph from his mother. Joseph became an accomplished fencer and violinist, eventually rising to the height of the music world and becoming a friend of Marie-Antoinette. But as a free man in prerevolution France, he faced racism everywhere despite his connections to members of nobility. Eventually, he became a revolutionary himself and was...

Writer Stefani Robinson is an admitted overachiever. In 2016, on the strength of a spec script, “Lola and the Afterlife,” about the ghost of dead girl stuck in limbo in Boston, she landed a meeting with Donald Glover on FX series “Atlanta” and was promptly hired for the Season 1 writer’s room. The day before she turned up for work, she had been grabbing coffee as an agent’s assistant.
She was the youngest member and only woman in the writers room, joining a team who already knew each other. But it was Robinson who landed a writing Emmy nomination for Season 1; the show took home two WGA awards. While she continued on “Atlanta” until the 2022 Season 4 finale, executive producer Paul Simms also took her with him to co-showrun 2019 TV series “What We Do in the Shadows,” based on the quirky vampire film by Jermaine Clement and Taika Waititi.

Director Stephen Williams’ new film, Chevalier, starts with a concert that shatters any preconceived notions audiences might have about classical music. Staid and unexciting, it is not, when Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Joseph Prowen) is introduced at the height of his fame, on tour and performing in Paris. The audience loves the ebbs and the flows of the sound from the orchestra, and at the end of the concert, Mozart asks the audience for requests. It is then that a Black man who we later find out is Joseph Bologne (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) stands up and asks to play onstage with Mozart. Suddenly, via Bologne’s rendition, one of Mozart’s own compositions is filled with a new energy and flair. There’s dueling violins and sensational solos as Mozart tries to keep up with Bologne. But he cannot. Bologne’s confidence is more than youthful egotism; he is clearly a...

Here is a wrap-up of all the news you need to know from Thursday, April 4, 2023.
Netflix is not moving forward with Freeridge Season 2.
The On My Block spinoff launched on the streaming service in February but failed to get much traction.
The original series aired from 2018-21 and racked up impressive viewership for the service, so it's surprising the latest entry failed to resonate.
Freeridge was "a coming-of-age comedy following sibling rivals Gloria and Ines and their friends Demi and Cameron who have unleashed a curse bringing dark misfortune into their lives."
Pete Davidson is staging a comeback to Saturday Night Live, but it will be a one-time-only deal.
The SNL alum is set to host the May 6, 2023, installment of the veteran sketch show.
Davidson joined the show in 2014 and departed in May 2022.

Kelvin Harrison Jr. spent up to six hours a day playing the violin in preparation for his latest film “Chevalier.” The period drama, set before the French Revolution, follows the life of composer Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, also known as Black Mozart. The revolution will be played on a violin in “Chevalier,” the upcoming period drama based on the life of composer Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges. On Friday, Searchlight Pictures released a new recording of one of Bologne’s compositions, which will be heard in the film when it reaches theaters next month.
The single is Bologne’s “Violin Concerto in G Major, Op. 8, No. 2: I. Allegro,” arranged by Kris Bowers and performed by Bowers, violinist Randall Goosby, and the London Contemporary Orchestra. The concerto is available to stream on Spotify now.
Kelvin Harrison Jr. (“Elvis”) stars in “Chevalier” as Bologne, who was born on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe in 1745. His father was a French plantation owner and his mother was an enslaved African woman. He went to France as a boy, and became a violin virtuoso, conductor of the Paris symphony, and a court favorite of Marie Antoinette...

To some extent based on a true story, Chevalier is followed by text that adds context. Not least of which is why a figure of such potential import might now be unknown. It's Mozart who first asks 'who is that?' within the film, albeit with some more striking Germanic in the middle. Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges has had his story fictionalised before. Previous to this, most notably in the 1840s by Roger de Beauvoir, the nom de plume of Eugene Roger, a friend of Alexandre Dumas (the elder). If that seems a complicated set of names and dates then know that it's indicative of both the history and this story.

Donald Glover made a rare appearance at the 2023 Writers Guild Awards in New York on Sunday night where he used some of his time onstage, presenting Atlanta executive producer Paul Simms with an honorary award, to joke about Community co-star Chevy Chase using the N-word.
The Atlanta writer-actor, whose upcoming series Swarm hits Amazon’s Prime Video later this month, recalled how the award Simms is receiving was named after former Saturday Night Live writer Herb Sargent, who came up with the Chevy Chase-hosted “Weekend Update.”
“Chevy Chase once called Herb one of the funniest writers working in television,” Glover said onstage at the WGA Awards. “Chevy Chase once called me. You know what? This is about Paul.”
Later, when Glover recalled hearing about Simms after working on Girls, he was more explicit about what happened with Chase.

British sitcoms have long been the source of reboot attempts in America.
The big one that springs to mind is The Office, which became a global hit and, following its addition to Netflix, one of its most-watched titles. A recent success has been Ghosts, which received acclaim upon its debut in 2021.
However, there have been many botched attempts – Spaced, The Inbetweeners and The It Crowd, to name a few.
There have also been several attempts to do a US version of Peep Show in the past, all of which have failed – but FX is going to give it another go, with series creators Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain on board as executive producers.
However, the former will not be scripting the pilot due to his commitments with HBO’s Succession. Emmy-nominated Stefani Robinson, who worked on Atlanta and What We Dp in the Shadows, will write the first episode.

Peep Show, the long-running British comedy starring David Mitchell and Robert Webb, is getting another shot in the U.S.
FX has ordered a pilot for this latest remake attempt written by Atlanta and What We Do In The Shadows exec producer Stefani Robinson.
It marks the latest attempt for the Channel 4 cult classic.
The Disney-owned network had a script in development in 2019 from Portlandia and Superstore writer and co-exec producer Karey Dornetto. Starz attempted a remake in 2016, while Fox took a run at a pilot, starring The Big Bang Theory’s Johnny Galecki, in 2005 and Spike gave it a shot in 2008.
This version, however, doesn’t necessarily attempt to remake the show beat-by-beat and will feature two female leads unlike the original.
The network said the pilot will “take inspiration” from the original with its “unique narrative format” – essentially the show is shot largely from the points of...

Kelvin Harrison Jr. has been on quite the biopic tip of late. For the record, I'm not complaining. Since breaking out in "Waves," Harrison has proven his mettle as one of the most exhilarating young actors working today. Watching him in anything is a total treat because no matter the project, no matter the character, Harrison always brings an exciting, earnest perspective.
After appearing as B.B. King in Baz Luhrmann's "Elvis" — and before transforming into the "Radiant Child" himself, Jean-Michel Basquiat, for "Samo Lives" — Harrison is set to star in the classical music biopic, "Chevalier." The film has already garnered fresh interest after debuting a trailer in November, so here's everything you need to know about the forthcoming film and more.

If music is a tool that helps viewers gain a better emotional understanding of what they’re watching, then “Atlanta” wielded the songs on its soundtrack like a tricked-out Leatherman with 19 distinct uses (including three different types of can opener). Music playing such a significant role shouldn’t be surprising for a series whose protagonist, Earn Marks (Donald Glover), is managing the burgeoning rap career of his cousin, Alfred “Paper Boi” Miles (Brian Tyree Henry). But that music had a versatility tailored to match “Atlanta,” a show where a harrowing trip to a showbiz house of horrors and a genuinely touching tribute to an animated classic were equally at home.
The needle drops on “Atlanta” often do more than one thing at a time: Informing the show’s specific sense of place, revealing what characters are feeling in ways that add to the actors’ expressions, giving the audience a poetic...

The first trailer for “Chevalier” is here, and it showcases a life of extreme musical talent – and extreme hardship.
The musical biopic from Searchlight Pictures will premiere in U.S. theaters on April 7, 2023.
Based on the true story of composer Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, the film stars Kelvin Harrison Jr. as the illegitimate son of an African slave and a French plantation owner, who—despite mounting bigotry and racism—rises to improbable heights in French society as a prodigy violinist, composter and fencer. But, a steamy affair with a French noblewoman and falling out with Marie Antoinette (Lucy Boynton) and her court ultimately leads to the Chevalier’s downfall.

Inspired by the true story of Joseph Bologne, an 18th-century composer, “Chevalier” breaks barriers with a modern musical twist.
Kelvin Harrison Jr. stars as Chevalier de Saint-Georges, who was the illegitimate son of an African slave and a French plantation owner. Bologne (Harrison Jr.) rises in French high society as a celebrated violinist-composer and fencer, catching the eye of Marie Antoinette (Lucy Boynton) and her court. However, as the French Revolution mounts, Bologne’s alliance shifts as the Queen’s court deems him a “party trick” and a “pet” playing the violin.
Samara Weaving, Minnie Driver, Marton Csokas, and Alex Fitzalan also star in the Searchlight Pictures film.
“Chevalier” is directed by Stephen Williams, from a script written by Stefani Robinson. Robinson, Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe, and Dianne McGunigle also serve as producers.
Kris Bowers composed the original score, with musical performances produced and arranged by Michael Abels.
Director Williams recalled actor Harrison Jr.

With "Atlanta" nearing the end of its final season with only a few more episodes left to air, now is as good a time as any to look back at the unconventional third season of the show. Taking place in Europe, "Atlanta" went international for season 3, and its episodes are filled with unexpected story points, including seemingly random and disconnected anthology stories that aired between episodes that featured the main cast. It should have come to the surprise of no one, then, that the season 3 finale would follow the patterns of previous episodes in its disconnection from the rest of the series. The finale focuses entirely on Van (Zazie Beetz) as she runs into an old group of friends from Atlanta while they're visiting France.
The absurdity of the episode is used to delve deeper into Van's mindset throughout the season, as the episodes that she's been featured in up...

A show about a down-on-his-luck college dropout and his rapper cousin navigating the music industry as the latter’s star rises; created by a multi-hyphenate who, at one point, was a full-time rapper himself; set in what many might argue was the rap capital of the United States for most of the past decade…
You’d think Donald Glover’s FX series “Atlanta” would be a cakewalk for song placements — license a few Migos, Young Thug and Gucci Mane tracks and call it a day — but music supervisors Jen Malone and Fam Udeorji are anything but paint-by-numbers.
While musically, the series pays ample homage to its titular hometown, the pair has worked closely with Glover and the rest of the show’s writers room throughout its four-season run — coming to an end in November — to establish a musical palette that simultaneously reflects Atlanta while also expanding far beyond the city limits.

A review of this week’s Atlanta, “Light Skinned-ed,” coming up just as soon as I take the Shmurda Exit…
Earn’s parents, Riley (Isaiah Whitlock Jr.) and Gloria (Myra Lucretia Taylor), appear briefly in the series premiere, mainly to establish that Earn is on bad terms with them due to his post-Princeton spiral and sins he has committed out of financial desperation. We see Gloria again in the “Fubu” flashbacks in Season Two, but that’s been it for Mr. and Mrs. Marks before this week. TV has conditioned...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Atlanta” Season 4, Episode 4, “Light Skinned-ed.”]
In Season 4, “Atlanta” isn’t just moving back to its titular hometown; it’s staging a comedic comeback.
Before getting to the sublime silliness in Episode 4, just look at what we’ve seen so far: The premiere opens with Darius (Lakeith Stanfield) delivering an exquisite, well-deserved dig on Marshall’s, before spending the rest of the episode being stalked by a (racist) woman steering a slow-rolling scooter. Alfred (Brian Tyree Henry) goes on a scavenger hunt run by a dead man. Tracy (Khris Davis) makes his triumphant return as a bossy receptionist (in what turns out to be a pretty impressive secret performance). Earn (Donald Glover) has to walk out of a meeting after a co-worker utters the gloriously oblivious phrase, “I just finished that book. It gave me a real paradigm shift on how things might not always be as they seem.” Even Van...

Director Stephen Williams and writer Stefani Robinson joined TheWrap and Shutterstock’s Interview and Portrait Studio at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival to discuss their new film “Chevalier,” a period drama about a Black 18th century classical composer who faced constant racism even as his music won the favor of Marie Antoinette.
Played by “Luce” star Kelvin Harrison Jr. in the film, Chevalier de Saint-Georges — born Joseph Bologne in Guadeloupe in 1745 — was the child of a white French plantation owner and an African slave. Taken to Paris at an early age for his education, Saint-Georges became a prodigy both as a fencer and a violin player.
His skills earned him a spot in the court of King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, but they only got him so far: The racism of French high society cost him the chance to become the director of the Paris Opera. Prejudice...

When Joseph Bologne, the Chevalier de Saint-Georges, died in Paris in 1799, his friend — J.S.A. Cuvelier — wrote an affectionate obituary about him in an arts newspaper. He called Saint-Georges “the most amazing of his century by the variety and superiority of his talents.” He sprinkled adjectives like “generous,” “gallant,” “witty” and “sensitive” throughout. There was little that Saint-Georges, the child of a white Frenchman and his Guadalupian slave mistress, could not do: He was a devoted friend, a champion of the people, a skilled fencer, a dancer, an intellectual and, perhaps most famously, a brilliant composer.
You might know Saint-Georges as the Black Mozart, an inaccurate shorthand that emerged with the revival of his legacy years ago. But the master of violin concertos was much more than the shadow of his white contemporaries, a sentiment underscored in Stephen Williams’ ebullient but tottering biopic Chevalier.

A biopic on 18th century virtuoso violinist and composer Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint Georges, featuring Kelvin Harrison Jr. in the title role, “Chevalier” is a delicately assembled cinematic Fabergé egg.
If you watch the film (premiering at the Toronto Film Festival) with the sound off, it can easily be mistaken for a French studio production made in adherence to the Tradition of Quality. But while it purports to celebrate a forgotten historical figure, much of the plot is decidedly ahistorical.
It opens in pre-revolution France, with Joseph crashing a Mozart concert and challenging the prodigy to a violin dual, something like the 18th century Parisian equivalent of Verzuz. While Mozart aims to school the brash unknown and deliver a lesson in humility, Joseph has the goods to upstage him and thoroughly enrapture the audience.
