Despite her status as one of the most iconic movie stars in history, one can’t help but root for the girl at the center of Audrey, who dreams of nothing more than to find peace and love. The girl is, of course, Audrey Hepburn, a movie star from a time when pictures were made around personas, and a change of hairstyle could easily turn into a global phenomenon. Hepburn’s name conjures visions of diamonds, sophistication, and effortless grace. Perhaps even the girl who had it all if we want to navigate in tropes, but what Helena Coan’s documentary achieves is that it doesn’t need sensationalism or shock to make us recognize ourselves in a figure who was truly larger than life. On the screen perhaps.
With a height of 5’7 and weighing a little over 100 lbs. Hepburn’s waifish look defied what Hollywood considered the ideal female heroine.

Seth Rogen finally got around to watching Cats!
On Tuesday night, the actor-comedian spent his Saint Patrick’s Day watching the Tom Hopper-directed movie-musical — which is now available to watch on iTunes, Amazon and other digital platforms — with the help of some green goods.
“I’m pretty stoned and watching Cats. I’ve never seen the broadway show. It is truly trippy,” Rogen shared on Twitter. “Am I supposed to know what a Jellicle is? They’ve said it 200,000 times but I don’t know what’s happening haha.”

The Razzie Awards ceremony, the Golden Raspberry Foundation’s annual skewering of the worst in cinema, was scheduled for tonight at the Barnsdall Theatre in Los Angeles. But the event is either “cancelled/postponed,” according to a statement from the producers.
The reason? “Because the Mayor of Los Angeles shut down all city-owned venues where more than 50 people could gather, including our site, The Barnsdall Theatre,” said the statement from John Wilson, co-founder of the awards. “Without a hall, we could not proceed with the show. But we are hoping to have something to disseminate by tonight – Perhaps even by what had been our original “curtain time” of 8 p.m. tonight. Obviously, if there is no live show, there is nothing to be streamed, either.”

Judi Dench has won an Oscar (and received seven nominations), picked up two Golden Globe statuettes, received three Emmy nominations and collected 11 BAFTA Awards — and now one Golden Raspberry Awards nod for her performance in the critically panned “Cats.”
During an interview with BBC Radio 4’s Front Row on Thursday, host John Wilson informed the legendary British actress of her Razzie nomination for Worst Supporting Actress for playing the part of Old Deuteronomy in Tom Hooper’s recent live-action adaptation of the classic Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.
“Worst Supporting Actor? Oh, am I? Oh, very, very good,” Dench said, laughing. “As the Worst Supporting Actor? Oh, well, that would be good.”

“Cats” will sweep the 2020 Razzie Awards. That’s according to the combined predictions of well over 1,000 Gold Derby users who have placed their bets here in our predictions center. But it won’t quite be a clean sweep. Scroll down for our complete forecasts in all 11 categories, listed in order of their racetrack odds (our projected winners are highlighted in gold).

The feline musical, based on the Andrew Lloyd Webber stage production, was not greeted nearly as well on the big screen as it was on Broadway, where it won seven Tonys including Best Musical for its original run. Despite its strong pedigree (including direction by “The King’s Speech” Oscar winner Tom Hooper), the film’s unsettling character design was greeted with bafflement at the first sign of the trailer, and then the film was released in December to negative reviews and poor box office.

“Cats” looks like it’ll dominate the Razzie Awards this weekend, but there’s one category where it will probably be mercifully passed over: Worst Actress. The movie musical’s leading lady, newcomer Francesca Hayward, will be spared the ignominy of a win at these kudos. According to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, Hilary Duff will win for playing the title role in “The Haunting of Sharon Tate” instead.

Tyler Perry, who wrote, produced, directed and played four roles in A Madea Family Funeral, received multiple nods — worst screenplay, worst actress, worst screen combo, and two worst supporting actor nominations.
The Razzie Award winners are usually announced the day before the Oscars. But according to the Golden Raspberry Foundation, the schedule was changed this year due to the Oscar ceremony being moved up. The Razzie Awards date will be announced later.

Although shunned by the Oscars, Cats racked up eight nominations to lead the 2020 Golden Raspberry Awards, a.k.a. the Razzies, the annual celebration of Hollywood’s worst.
The big screen adaptation of the Broadway musical, a box office and critical disaster, earned nods for Worst Picture, Worst Actress (Francesca Hayward), Worst Supporting Actress (both Judi Dench and Rebel WIlson), Worst Supporting Actor (James Corden), Worst Screen Combo (for “Any Two Half-Feline/Half-Human Hairball” plus Jason Derulo and “his CGI-neutered bulge”), Worst Director (Tom Hooper) and Worst Screenplay. Taylor Swift and Idris Elba escaped unscathed.

British actors including Judi Dench and James Corden among worst-actor nominees
The widely panned movie musical Cats and four of its stars have been nominated for Razzie awards, an annual ritual that lampoons the worst of cinema.
James Corden, Judi Dench, Rebel Wilson and Francesca Hayward received Razzie acting nominations for their Cats roles, in which they wore digitally created fur. Oscar winner Dench was singled out for “looking suspiciously similar to the Cowardly Lion from Wizard of Oz”, organisers said in a statement announcing the nominees.

You knew this was coming. The 40th annual Golden Raspberry Awards dishonored the cinematic feline felony known as”Cats” with eight nominations, including one for no less than Dame Judi Dench herself. In fact, the organization even felt the need to describe her Old Deuteronomy as looking suspiciously similar to the Cowardly Lion from “The Wizard of Oz.” Somewhere, Bert Lahr is crying.
But incredibly, there were two other 2019 releases that proved egregious enough to also be pelted with eight nominations: Sylvester Stallone‘s “Rambo: Last Blood” and Tyler Perry‘s 12th and purportedly last appearance in a wig and dress, “A Medea Family Funeral.”
As per usual, the competitors for disgraced excellence were announced on the eve of the Academy Awards, which airs live on ABC on Sunday. The cheeky Razzies also had the nerve to slap around two other Oscars winners besides Dame Judi: Anne Hathaway, up for both “The Hustle” and “Serenity,...

Tom Hooper’s movie musical “Cats,” Sylvester Stallone’s “Rambo: Last Blood,” and Tyler Perry’s “A Madea Family Funeral” topped this year’s nominations list for the worst movies and performances of 2019, scoring eight nominations a piece.
Other “honorees” on this year’s list include the remake of “Hellboy” starring David Harbour, John Travolta in the thriller “The Fanatic” and the James Franco-directed period drama “Zeroville.”
The Razzies are now in their 40th year, and the group typically announces its nominees a day ahead of the Oscar nominations. But with the Oscars moving to its earliest date ever, it also pushed back the Razzies, which are only just announcing the nominees list. The awards ceremony for the winners will be announced at a later date.

This musical fantasy is an adaptation of the stage musical of the same name by Andrew Lloyd Webber which in turn had originated from Ts Elliot's poetry collection, "Old Possum's Book Of Practical Cats" that was released in 1939.
Elliot's poetry was interesting and so was Webber's stage musical, but Tom Hooper's big screen adaptation, leaves a lot to be desired.
The narrative begins on a sarcastic note with a variety of felines singing in an alley, just off a darken London Square:
Are you blind when you're born?
Can you see in the dark?
Can you look at a king?
Would you sit on his throne?
Can you say of your bite
That it's worse than your bark?
Are you cock of the walk
When you're walking alone?

I cringed a bit when I read the social media reactions to the trailer for the big-screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Cats” last summer. I, for one, was captivated by director Tom Hooper‘s approach to 2012’s “Les Miserables,” another long-running, sung-through Broadway show. He enlisted live singing, focused on bringing out the emotions in the material, stacked the acting deck with big name stars and gave Anne Hathaway an Oscar-winning moment by having her own hair chopped to bits on camera as she wept through the production’s signature song “I Dreamed a Dream.”
But that ain’t “Cats.” If you found it hard to accept the de-aging technology used on the cast in “The Irishman,” just wait until you try to re-adjust your reality into seeing the likes of gorgeous Idris Elba as the evil Macavity being kind of naked but also encased in sleek black fur.

Director had been working on effects shots up until film’s premiere
Universal Pictures has sent an updated version of its new musical Cats to exhibitors in North America after director Tom Hooper wanted to tweak the effects.
The studio told theatres on Friday about the move and said the updated version would be ready by Sunday for theatre operators that could access a satellite server, and by Tuesday via hard drive for others.
It is an unusual move that means theatres that played one version of the film on opening day Friday will screen a tweaked version by early next week at the latest.

After Universal Pictures’ new film “Cats” was clawed and torn to shreds by critics last week, the studio told movie theaters on Friday that it would be sending a new version of the film with “some improved visual effects.”
The move of replacing a film already in theaters with an “improved” version is unheard of But according to a copy of a memo obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, director Tom Hooper has been upfront about the fact that he barely finished the CGI on the film in time for the world premiere in New York City last week, and the switch is at his request.
Critics have disparaged “Cats,” which stars Francesca Hayward, Taylor Swift, Judi Dench, Jennifer Hudson and Idris Elba, among others. The film received a C+ CinemaScore and was slapped with a 19% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The updated film is expected to be available for cinemas to download on Sunday via a satellite server, but for exhibitors that don’t have access to the server, they are expected to receive a hard drive by Tuesday, according to Universal. The studio is asking that theaters replace the current print of Cats as soon as possible.

Whether you find the titular characters in Tom Hooper’s live action adaptation of “Cats” adorable or horrifying, the truth is that a lot of work went into the singing and dancing creatures. The director and his team pioneered a new “digital fur technology” that merged footage of the actors on the film’s set with VFX, instead of the usual motion capture method that’s been employed in movies like “Planet of the Apes,” and “Avatar.” Here the actors become the cats without losing any trace of their on-set performance.
Hooper’s cats have long twitching tails and ears that react emotionally. The technology, despite helping to create an uncanny valley of cat-humans, is impressively detailed, particularly when you realize that the actors were dressed in tight, green suits during filming. To allow VFX to take over during post-production, the cast wore motion capture suits and face dots, which...

Judi Dench as Old Deuteronomy in “Cats,” co-written and directed by Tom Hooper.
Having seen the trailer for Cats, I must admit I approached the film with some trepidation. The highly-touted CGI effects to make humans catlike actually looked unsettling rather than magical. The good news is the effect is much less disturbing in the film itself. With music by Andrew Lloyd Weber, Cats is one of the longest-running musicals of all time, so has plenty of fans.
The musical debuted in London in 1988 and it is credited with starting the “mega-musical” craze. Along with innovative staging, it featured groundbreaking costumes, makeup, and choreography that turned dancers and singers into cat-like humans, much to the delight of audience, spawning a host of similar effects in stage shows. While I’m not personal a fan of musicals myself but I did enjoy T.S. Eliot’s classic funny quirky book of poems,...

Taylor Swift attended “cat school” to learn what Jellicles can and Jellicles do. To prepare for “Cats,” the big-screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1981 musical, Swift and her co-stars enrolled in classes to master the movements of their four-legged characters. In the film, Swift plays Bombalurina, a rabble-rousing outsider who sprinkles catnip over the Jellicle ball.
Swift didn’t phone (or meow) in her performance in “Cats,” starring Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Jason Derulo, Ian McKellen and Judi Dench. She wanted to be ready for her big number, “Macavity,” and in case Lloyd Webber enlisted her to write a new song for the movie. When he did, their collaboration was fast and easy, in the form of “Beautiful Ghosts,” a confessional ballad performed by the stray cat Victoria (Francesca Hayward) that serves as a bookend to “Memory,” the production’s signature song (belted out by Hudson).

It's not easy being a cat! The cast of the Cats film had to undergo serious training for their roles, and one of the most talked about experiences has been the fact that they all went through "cat school" to learn how to be cats. Now, thanks to James Corden and the power of The Late Late Show, we finally get a sneak peek into what that entailed. The host rallied some of the members of the film including Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, Jason Derulo, Rebel Wilson, Francesca Hayward and director Tom Hooper for a special lesson in being a cat. "Today, each of you will be put through vigorous training to ensure you give the most cat-like performance in the film. One of you will be...

Distributors hold off releases as ’Star Wars’ prepares to dominate.
Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker receives its long-anticipated release at the UK box office this weekend, prompting most other distributors to step back and avoid the force of the Disney juggernaut.
The fantasy epic is billed as an end to the nine-movie “Skywalker saga” that began with the original Star Wars in 1977 and promises audiences the return of classic characters as well as answers to lingering questions in a bid to maximize box office.

Attention, moviegoers searching for the worst movie of the year: We have a late-breaking winner. Cats slips in right under the radar and easily scores as the bottom of the 2019 barrel — and arguably of the decade. Even Michael Bay’s trash trilogy of soul-destroying Transformers movies can’t hold a candle. What happened?

“Cats” will be released in theaters on Friday, and what better way to celebrate than with a rendition of “Memory” featuring the cast of the movie — and tiny instruments that look like they were found in an alley somewhere?
Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, Francesca Hayward, Jason Derulo, and James Corden each sang a verse of the iconic song by Andrew Lloyd Webber on Wednesday night’s episode of “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.” Oh yeah, and Fallon sang a verse too with complete seriousness and without laughing.
Sadly, Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Idris Elba and Rebel Wilson didn’t seem to have gotten the memo.

The Cats cast can do it all!
On Wednesday night, a few well-known members of the film’s cast — Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, Jason Derulo, James Corden and Francesca Hayward — dropped by The Tonight Show and remixed Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Memory” with Jimmy Fallon and the Roots, all while playing on makeshift instruments they “found in an alley.”
The star-studded cast took turns singing different parts of the famous ballad — which is belted by Hudson in the film — before picking up a random instrument to join in with the Roots band.

Meow. Well, I suppose the appropriate term here is woof. Cats, the adaptation of the smash Broadway musical, is a real dog. When it’s not alternating between being incomprehensible and nonsensical in terms of its plot, the execution of the questionable premise is at best unfinished, and at worst borderline inept. Whatever charms the stage play contains are lost here in an orgy of terrible effects, bizarre designs, and a sense that this is all just plain wrong. Anyone hoping that this would avoid disaster and be either fun bad or so bad it’s good, well, I have bad news. This film is just plain bad, easily one of the worst of 2019. The movie is, obviously, an adaptation of the Broadway musical of the same name. It follows a group of street cats known as the Jellicles on a very special night. When a new stray named Victoria (Francesca Hayward) stumbles upon them,...

In the last week, all the biggest celebs from the film have major waves promoting the project—we're looking at you, Jason Derulo—but the cast saved the best for last. The film of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Cats” arrives without so much buzz as hisses thanks to a trailer released back in July which seemed to horrify more than to suggest a beloved fantasy musical that has, according to provided production information, been staged for over 81 million people in more than 50 countries and in 19 languages since its London premiere in 1981.
In its original theatrical presentation, “Cats” was weird, yes, but also an admirably immersive, intimate blend of junkyard pizzazz, busy makeup, leg warmers, T.S. Eliot rhymes and Webber earworms that, in its nonsensical Jellicle-osity, added up to something reasonably transportive. It never purred, but it pranced, preened and projected enough to be cat-video distracting, even as it augured decades of stage musicals that favored the flashy over the finely tuned.
But Tom Hooper’s jarring fever dream of a spectacle is like something that escaped from Dr. Moreau’s creature...

Tom Hooper’s 2019 adaptation of “Cats” unfolds as an absurd and frequently nonsensical array of light and color, with actors bathed in ill-conceived CGI fur against a similarly invented London backdrop. Fans of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Broadway blockbuster, and anyone familiar with the movie’s viral trailer that stoked excitement and horror in equal measures, will know that sounds about right.
Hooper’s “Cats” adaptation delivers on those expectations and then some, which makes it a fascinating mess of exuberant musical numbers and scintillating digitized sets. Those human-cat terrors already looked ridiculous slinking about a giant junkyard set in body-suits; who thought that closeups would actually improve the show?
But there’s the rub: The argument against “Cats” also makes the case for its existence, because everything ludicrous about the show has been cranked up to 11, with a restless artificial camera and actors so keen on upstaging one another...

As with Lloyd Webber's production, the Universal film features characters from T.S. Eliot's poetry book Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats known as the Jellicle tribe. In the story, a group of felines decide which one of them will ascend to the Heavside Layer and be reborn into a new life.
Idris Elba plays the role of Macavity, with Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift, Francesca Hayward, Rebel Wilson and James Corden also starring in the film.

Rarely in modern Hollywood has something so ambitiously garish been realized. Cats is a fascinating failure.

In 1998, Andrew Lloyd Webber produced a Cats video special in which a live performance of the show was filmed. This was done, in part, because few thought the material would work as a Hollywood movie. They got it right the first time. So here we are with no need to split whiskers: Cats is a colossal failure. But a fascinating one. Attempting to make the cinematic out of something inherently stagebound, and a straightforward narrative from what was always just a collection of catchy melodies wrapped around witty but esoteric T.S. Eliot poems, this movie is one of the weirdest and most garish monstrosities to be birthed out of the Hollywood studio system in this century.

Taylor Swift fans have been waiting for the superstar to do “Carpool Karaoke” on “The Late Late Show With James Corden.” Ever since a tweet sent out by the CBS show’s Twitter account earlier this year sent Swift loyalists into a tizzy, there has been speculation on if — or when — the carpool collaboration will happen, but so far, no news.
Well, good luck for the Swifties: James Corden wants it to happen.
“I think we’ll do it at some point, I hope so,” Corden told Variety on Monday night at the “Cats” premiere in New York City when asked about doing “Carpool Karaoke” with Swift, with whom he co-stars in the musical.
While Corden would love to sing along with Swift in the car, he says it’ll all depend on her schedule. Pointing to Sir Paul McCartney, whose “Carpool Karaoke” took 19 months to finally make happen, Corden explained,...

It’s one of the most talked about movie events of the year, and finally it’s time for the cinematic adaption of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats to hit our screens. To mark the occasion we had the pleasure of meeting director Tom Hooper and one of the lead stars, the ballet dancer Francesca Hayward. Hooper discusses the technical challenges in bringing this to tale to screen, and what it was like directing more experienced stars like Judi Dench and Ian McKellen, in contrast to the likes of Taylor Swift and Jason Derulo. Hayward also tells us who made her most starstruck, and how much of her experience in ballet helped when perfecting the movement of our favourite feline friends. And finally, we had to ask – what on earth is Cat School?

Just look at this line-up of nominees: Beyonce vs. Taylor Swift vs. Elton John vs. Cynthia Erivo — along with composer and Egot champ Robert Lopez and spouse Kristen Anderson-Lopez.
Will there be a glitzier or more highly competitive category at the 77th Golden Globes than Best Original Song in a Motion Picture? Too bad that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association doesn’t make room for musical performances during its party that passes as an awards show.
One can only hope that these are also the same candidates that will show up on the Oscar ballot. Perhaps John Travolta will be given another a chance to right his wrong when he weirdly introduced “Frozen’s” Elsa — Idina Menzel — as Adele Dazeem before she sang the winning”Let It Go” at the 2014 ceremonies — that is if she gets to wail “Into the Unknown” from its sequel, “Frozen 2.”

The films, filmmakers and actors who earned Golden Globe nominations on December 9 can celebrate their recognition today, but what about the contenders that missed the cut? In a year as crowded with strong films as this one has been — most of the top contenders have lived up to their expectations — there were bound to be movies the Globes wouldn’t have room for. Scroll down for our list of some of the hopefuls whose hopes were dashed, and check out the full list of Golden Globe film nominees here.
The Globes are decided by the 90 or so international journalists who make up the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and perhaps most surprisingly of all they didn’t make space for Robert De Niro. He plays the title role in “The Irishman,” which earned five total nominations including Best Film Drama, and yet he didn’t earn a nom for Best Film Drama Actor.

Awards season kicks into higher gear on Monday, as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announces nominations for its 2020 Golden Globe Awards, which cover the 2019 calendar year. Noms will give certain films momentum heading into the Oscar race, while it’s the first opportunity for many TV series to earn awards acclaim before competing for an Emmy in the fall.
