ChainFest, a chain food celebration that held its inaugural edition in LA last year, is passing the baton to Medium Rare, a fast growing producer of live events and manager of brands, in a multiyear deal.
B.J. Novak of The Office, who founded ChainFest with chef Tim Hollingsworth , helped attract a celeb turnout to its first outing. Jack Davis, founder of Crypt TV (recently sold to Brat TV) is also a co-founder. Chain Fest stakeholders see the first edition as proof of concept but want to improve and expand the fest into a broader entertainment festival with live music and events. The plan is to launch the fest in New York and other U.S. cities.
Medium Rare, founded by Joe Silberzweig and Adam Richman, works closely with Shaquille O’Neal, who brokered a 2020 deal for Authentic Brands to take a 20% interest in Medium Rare. O’Neal has a big stake in both companies.

It must be the season of the diss, and not even Taylor Swift is immune — and we’re not even talking about ex-boyfriends. The expanded Anthology edition of The Tortured Poets Department features a track, “thanK you aIMee,” that many fans are interpreting as a diss track aimed at Kim Kardashian.
It should be noted, this isn’t exactly wild speculation. While Swift has always loved hiding deep lore clues and easter eggs, the ones here are not very subtle at all. First of all, the title is conspicuously stylized as “thanK you aIMee,...

Giancarlo Esposito has had many iconic roles — Buggin’ Out, Mike Giardello, El Presidente — but only one is associated with AMC: Breaking Bad drug kingpin Gus Fring. It’s tempting to bring up that show when talking about Parish, a new crime drama on the same network, but that would set expectations unfairly high. Adapted from the U.K. series The Driver by co-creator Danny Brocklehurst and Sunu Gonera (who directed at least one episode and co-wrote others before he was ousted following an internal investigation of “serious allegations”), the story has moved to AMC’s recent stomping grounds of New Orleans and extended itself from three episodes to six.

Drake Bell shared that his Drake & Josh co-star Josh Peck has “reached out” to him, offering support after he revealed in Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV that he was abused.
In the harrowing four-part ID docuseries, the actor-musician shared his story of alleged abuse by his former dialogue coach, Brian Peck, who was convicted of sexually assaulting a Nickelodeon child actor in 2004. Viewers have now learned that Bell, who was a minor at 15 years of age at the time, was at the center of that criminal case and conviction.
Following the revelations about allegations of abuse, some fans took to Josh Peck’s social media to criticize him for staying silent. After Bell’s stint on The Amanda Show from 1999 to 2002, he later starred alongside Josh Peck in the popular Nickelodeon show, Drake & Josh, for four seasons from 2004 to 2007.

Controversial Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy doesn’t like what he’s seen about how the journalism sausage is made.
Portnoy is hosting a “One Bite Pizza Festival” in Brooklyn, N.Y. today. Before the festival, Washington Post reporter Emily Heil reached out to the festival’s sponsors to see whether they had any comment on Portnoy’s association with the event.
A screenshot Portnoy published on the Barstool website quotes the email: “We are planning to write about the festival and how some of the sponsors and participants have drawn criticism by seeming to associate themselves with Dave Portnoy, who has a history of misogynistic comments and other problematic behavior.”
Portnoy confronted Heil in a phone call he taped and posted on social media. The video was headlined, “I Caught Wind That The Washington Post Was Writing A Hit Piece About Me And My Pizzafest So I Did What I Do.

Born on Nov. 25, 1915, Augusto José Ramón Pinochet would rise through the ranks of the Chilean military and, having become commander-in-chief of the nation’s army, lead a coup against the country’s president Salvador Allende in 1973. This would kick off Pinochet’s political reign — and reign of terror — for the next 17 years. He’d escape persecution for the countless crimes committed during his regime and was unrepentant about his dictatorship (what were mass graves of dissidents but more “efficient ways of burials?”) up until his death in 2006.

Barstool Sports is the latest digital media company to undergo layoffs.
Founder Dave Portnoy revealed the news on a video on Barstool’s own YouTube channel.
“I’ve been very clear, to anyone who has paid attention, we are going to have layoffs and cuts and it’s started and it sucks. People who know me from the beginning know that I hate firing people,” he said. “Having said that, it’s a no brainer… because otherwise nobody will have jobs so we have to get back to a breakeven thing, we’re losing a lot and it sucks.”
Portnoy said that Matt Fitzgerald, who was hired as a newsletter writer, and has been an NFL blogger for Barstool, was one of those cut.
It comes after Portnoy bought the site back from Penn Entertainment for $1 after the latter struck a deal with Disney. It comes after Penn bought Barstool for $551M.

Following the huge news last week that Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy had bought back his controlling stake in the company from Penn Entertainment, Barstool Sports is already making changes on the exec front. Barstool Sports has upped Barstool Sports New York founder Kevin Clancy, aka KFC, to Gm of Comedy at the company.
With Portnoy only recently gaining back a controlling stake in the company, Clancy’s responsibilities (and even his title which was given to him prior to the sale) could be changing over time but going forward he will be focused on expanding the company’s footprint in the comedy world, specifically in the stand up comic scene, in a much more hands on way. As part of this new position, he will also be helping several other podcasts, brands, and shows achieve the same level of success he and the other Barstool OGs have been lucky enough to see.

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy purchased the site back for $1 yesterday, according to a filing. Portnoy sold Barstool to Penn Entertainment in a two-part sale — the latter transaction having just closed in February of this year — for $551 million. Now, he gets this site back for just $1.
Needless to say, the outspoken Portnoy was ecstatic, announcing the deal in an “Emergency Press Conference” shared to social media.
“For the first time in a decade, I own 100% of Barstool Sports,” said an excited Portnoy, who is known to fans of the site for his pizza reviews. “Not since the Chernin deal have I been in total control of everything.”

The latter is a reference to the purchase of a 51% stake in the site by Peter Chernin’s Chernin Media Group in 2016. That deal valued the property at between $10 and $15 million.

Disney ultimately chose to move further into sports betting to engage with young consumers, CEO Bob Iger said Wednesday. And why Penn Entertainment? They had the best offer.
On Tuesday, Disney announced a $2 billion deal with casino owner Penn Entertainment to launch ESPN Bet, an online sports betting brand. Under the terms of the deal, Penn will have the rights to the ESPN brand (for betting purposes) for 10 years and an option to extend for another 10 years, if both parties agree.
Penn will pay ESPN $1.5 billion in cash over the 10-year term, as well as $500 million in warrants that will vest over the term.
On the Disney earnings call Wednesday, Iger said he believes the partnership can grow both the ESPN and Penn businesses.

Just how much did Dave Portnoy pay to buy back Barstool Sports from Penn Entertainment?
According to a new securities filing, Portnoy acquired the sports media brand he founded for just $1.
Of course, there are other pieces to the deal, but the shocking sale price (Penn spent $551 million to acquire Barstool) makes for an interesting end to that relationship. Penn says that it expects to record a loss of between $800 million and $850 million on the deal.
Penn of course announced a deal with ESPN to rebrand its Barstool Sportsbook as ESPN Bet, and will pay ESPN $1.5 billion and $500 million in stock warrants for the privilege.
That meant abandoning the Barstool brand, which it acquired in full just earlier this year (it initially bought a stake in 2020).
“Pursuant to the Barstool Spa, Penn sold 100% of the outstanding shares of Barstool to David Portnoy in exchange for a nominal cash consideration ($1.00 dollar...

The core Disney+ streaming service added 800,000 subscribers in the June quarter. Disney+ Hotstar went (far) in the other direction.
Hotstar, the name for Disney+ in India and other Southeast Asia countries, lost 12.5 million subs — or about a quarter of its remaining members — from April to June, which is Disney’s fiscal third quarter. Disney+ Hotstar’s membership has been getting obliterated since Disney lost its Ipl cricket rights.
While those numbers look horrible, the truth is that Hotstar barely brings in any money anyway. (Disney+ core’s average revenue per user is $6.58/month; Hotstar’s Arpu is just 59 cents.)
Adding in Hulu and ESPN+, Disney the company now has a grand total of 219.6 million global streaming subscriptions. Rival Netflix ended June with 238.39 million global paid subscribers — yes, it’s pulling away again.
Disney’s new subscriptions breakdown looks like this:
Disney+ (core): 105.7 million subscriptions
Disney+ Hotstar: 40.4 million subscriptions

ESPN muscled aside the upstart Barstool Sports and struck a major sports-betting pact with operator Penn Entertainment that will put the Disney-owner sports giant into gaming and wagering in a major way.
Under terms of the deal, Penn will pay $1.5 billion in cash to ESPN over a ten-year term and grant ESPN approximately $500 million of warrants to purchase approximately 31.8 million Penn common shares that will vest ratably over 10 years, in exchange for media, marketing services, brand and other rights. Penn, which bought 36% of Barstool Sports in 2020 and recently completed its purchase of the company, is selling it back to its founder, Dave Portnoy, who will have to abide by certain non-compete agreements and give up to 50% to Penn in the event he sells or decides some other transaction for the property.

Unlike other reality shows such as Laguna Beach, Jersey Shore has never been a scripted series. The MTV show and its cast have been authentic from day one and continue to be. Still, Jersey Shore: Family Vacation is different from the original series in some ways. The spinoff show isn’t scripted, but the situations seen in Family Vacation are low-key staged.
‘Jersey Shore’ and ‘Jersey Shore: Family Vacation’ have never been scripted | MTV ‘Jersey Shore’ was never scripted and neither is ‘Family Vacation’
Since the beginning, Jersey Shore’s production crew has had a hand in what the cast does. In the first season, when the roommates were 20-somethings with little to no fame, they could do whatever they wanted. However, when Jersey Shore became a cultural phenomenon, production had to provide some guidance.
In a 2018 interview with Bustle, the cast mentioned a “book” that told them places they were approved for filming.

More than six months after he was found dead in Burbank, California, Cooper Noriega’s cause of death has been determined.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner has determined that the 19-year-old TikTok star died due to the combined effects of fentanyl and the anxiety medications lorazepam and alprazolam (Xanax), People reports.
Additionally, it’s noted by the coroner that a third anxiety medication, clonazepam, contributed to the fatal drug cocktail that led to his death.
Noriega’s body was found in a Burbank parking lot on June 9, just a few weeks ahead of what would have been his 20th birthday.
