First up, I have to answer the question I had when I picked up this book: yes, that tin man. Well, one of those tin men, to be clearer.
Justin Madison’s debut graphic novel Tin Man is set in a version of L. Frank Baum’s Oz, and his tin man, Campbell, has the familiar shape and form Americans expect from their tin men since 1939. But that’s not particularly clear at the beginning of the story, and it’s never important. It’s something bigger than an Easter egg, I guess, since there are plenty of references to Baum here, but it’s all background.
We’re in a recognizably modern world: suburbia, TV news, two-paycheck families, junkyards, high school students who play video games and hang out to do mischief. The land is called Oz, which is mentioned but not emphasized. It looks mostly like our world,...

This is Day 76 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
A fourth straight day of rain in New York City — the remnants of Tropical Storm Ophelia — greeted striking film and television workers who were back on picket lines this week for the first time since the announcement of a deal between the Writers Guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
Although WGA pickets are suspended, a smattering of Guild members and their union representatives turned up on Tuesday to bolster rain-soaked SAG-AFTRA picket lines at the four locations in Manhattan where AMPTP studios are headquartered.
“SAG was there for WGA from Day 1, and they came out in such encouraging numbers when they really didn’t have to,” Eric Glover, a writer for the CW’s Tom Swift, told Deadline at the end of a soggy 2½-hour march outside Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery offices. “I can’t technically be here in my WGA shirt,...

Auditions continued on Episode 2 of “America’s Got Talent” Season 17, which was the most-watched and highest-rated show during primetime on Tuesday. NBC’s competition series hit a high note with a 0.77 rating in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and 6.4 million total viewers — which is even higher than its season premiere last week (which had a 0.76 demo rating and 6.3 million total viewers). It was a night of talent competitions on NBC, as “AGT” was followed up by the second episode of the network’s new show “Dancing With Myself” — which sees Shakira, Nick Jonas and Liza Koshy judge contestants participating in challenges based on viral dance trends. Tuesday’s episode took a dip this week, down from a 0.42 demo rating and 2.7 million total viewers in its premiere to a 0.39 demo rating and 2.2 million total viewers. Elsewhere in primetime, The CW aired the second episode of its “Nancy Drew” spinoff “Tom Swift.” The episode...

Jussie Smollett acknowledged his legal difficulties Thursday at a Harlem premiere screening for his gay romantic drama “B-Boy Blues,” expressing gratitude for finishing his feature directorial debut despite his personal issues.
“Sometimes we all go through things, you know, but what I know for sure is I am so… if I don’t know nothin’, I know how blessed I am,” Smollett said in his first major public appearance since receiving a five-month prison sentence in March for lying to Chicago cops about a racist and homophobic 2019 attack. “I know how grateful I must be. It is not up for debate. I must be grateful. To the universe, to God, to our ancestors, whoever you want to believe it is.”
The former “Empire” acknowledged the challenges of making the film — based on the bestselling 1994 novel of the same name from author James Earl Hardy, who co-wrote the script along with Smollett.

More than a year after introducing Tom Swift via Nancy Drew, The CW on Tuesday finally invited viewers into the billionaire inventor’s world — a fashionable, futuristic fantasy where few things (and people) are as they seem.
The premiere of Tom Swift picks up in 2022 (vs. Nancy‘s 2019), meaning Tom is “a couple years older, more into his twenties and more of a grown man,” as star Tian Richards explains to TVLine. Tom’s appearance on Nancy was merely an appetizer, “and now you’re getting the full meal.”

Tom Swift arrives on the small screen on Tuesday, May 31. And ahead of the series premiere, stars Tian Richards, Ashleigh Murray, and Marquise Vilsón teased what’s to come in the Nancy Drew spinoff. Speaking with TV Insider at The CW Upfront presentation on May 19 at the New York City Center, the stars introduced their characters and shared the emotional impact of starring in a series that centers Black, queer joy and success. Richards stars as the titular character in the series, based on the Edward L. Stratemeyer books. Tom is a gay Black billionaire who’s part of an exorbitantly wealthy family. His family’s riches were built upon groundbreaking technological innovation of Swift Enterprises, making Tom’s world, as Richards describes to TV Insider, an “explosion of tech, beautiful people, fashion.” But don’t conflate the opulence with a lack of drama. You don’t have to have watched The CW’s “Nancy Drew” to watch “Tom Swift,” the network’s new series that is, in the most technical terms, a spinoff. Though Tom (played by Tian Richards) first appeared on the second season of “Nancy Drew,” the show bearing his name has little to do with it, which is for the best. There’s no real need to complicate things even further for Tom, who goes through so much in the pilot episode that there’s barely room for nuance beyond the basics.
The series’ rush to establish every moving piece begins immediately, with a voiceover that wastes no time illustrating the Swifts’ place in this world. “We’re not nerds; we’re Black nerds,” says Tom. “Oh, and billionaires.” Also, they’re “not the Obamas,” and “not ballers,” but inventors who are about to go to Saturn. Former “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett’s directing debut has finally found a home: BET+ has picked up “B-Boy Blues,” which will debut on the streamer on June 9 in time for Pride Month. As part of the pickup, Mona Scott-Young and her Monami Entertainment has joined the film as a producer and was instrumental in getting the deal done with BET+.

The CW is getting into the renewal spirit.
The network on Tuesday picked up All American (for Season 5), The Flash (for Season 9), Superman & Lois (for Season 3), Riverdale (for Season 7), Walker (for Season 3), Kung Fu (for Season 3), and Nancy Drew (for Season 4).
The CW typically renews shows very early, but this is the first time in years the network waited until spring to dole out the pickups.
On top of that, several shows have been left on the bubble, leading to a lot of speculation about what it could mean for the future of the network as a whole.
It was revealed recently that the network has been put up for sale by Warner Bros. and Paramount.
Traditionally, the network's series don't perform well in live + same day viewing, meaning that the studios associated with the shows make their money from lucrative streaming deals.

The CW has handed early renewals to a large portion of its scripted schedule including The Flash.
The network has renewed All American, The Flash, Kung Fu, Nancy Drew, Riverdale, Superman & Lois and Walker.
Traditionally, the youth-skewing network hands out early renewals, sometimes as early as January, to the majority of its slate – a boon for its owners CBS and Warner Bros.
However, this year, the broadcaster’s future is up in the air with local affiliate group Nexstar circling and Deadline understands that a new majority owner will likely have a say in some of its renewal decisions. The network also needs to take into account elements such as streaming rights to shows and other variables that will determine a pick up.

The CW knows what’s up. It was just announced that the network has renewed seven of its current original scripted dramas for the upcoming 2022-23 season and let’s just say, it’s about damn time. We have been waiting for word on some of these shows for too long. Making the cut this go-’round are third seasons for Superman & Lois, Walker, and Kung Fu; a fourth season for the better-than-ever Nancy Drew; a fifth for All American; a seventh for the newly supernatural Riverdale; and Arrowverse-record ninth season for The Flash. These early renewals are in addition to the previously announced alternative series renewals of Penn & Teller: Fool Us, Masters of Illusion, and World’s Funniest Animals. The renewals for Drew and Walker also give us hope for their in-the-works spinoffs, Tom Swift and Walker: Independence. But where are Batwoman and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow?...

The CW has given a straight-to-series order to Tom Swift, based on the classic book series Tom Swift, with a twist, for the 2021-22 season. Tom Swift comes from Nancy Drew co-creators/executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, their Fake Empire banner and CBS Studios.
Tom Swift, a spinoff of Nancy Drew, was one of two projects that had remained in contention after the network had made decisions on the bulk of its six 2021 pilots, handing series orders only to Naomi and All American: Homecoming in May.
The CBS Studios/Fake Empire-produced project did not do a traditional backdoor pilot; instead the character Tom Swift, played by Tian Richards, appeared in a Nancy Drew episode titled “The Celestial Visitor,” which was directed by Ruben Garcia, and the network also ordered a pilot script.

Extreme measures are necessary to get answers.
What could have been a cut and dry case of the week on Nancy Drew Season 2 Episode 14 blossomed into so much more.
On this nail-biting episode of the mystery drama, the Drew Crew was forced to tackle a case they didn't know existed, and it tugged on the heartstrings.
The revelation that Dolores's disappearance was forgotten about by the people of Horseshoe Bay and the media because a young girl went missing just days later made for difficult viewing, and the way the answers just kept coming kept me on the edge of my seat throughout.
The series tackled systemic racism and police brutality in a way that felt natural and didn't feel forced. If you watch Nancy Drew online, you know the series loves to throw in supernatural elements, but everything related to the case was down to the failings of the people around Dolores.

For its next page-to-screen adaptation, The CW is turning to one of literature’s greatest drama queens.
The network is developing Modern Austen, a one-hour drama series that reimagines Jane Austen‘s novels as six modern stories, Variety reports. Each season will be based on a different Austen novel; the first is a San Francisco-set take on Pride and Prejudice.

The CW is looking to transform another series into a franchise.
A spinoff of Black Lightning is officially in the works, with Jordan Calloway eyed to lead the cast of Painkiller.
The pilot will air as the seventh episode of Black Lightning Season 4, which is currently slated to debut Monday, February 8.
“Khalil Payne is a young man ridden with the guilt of his troubled past from his former life in Freeland City, where, as a super-enhanced killing machine known as Painkiller, he was both a member of Tobias Whale’s gang and a weapon of Agent Odell and the shadowy Asa," reads the official description of the series.
"After attempting to bury the darker, devastatingly lethal Painkiller part of his persona, Khalil has distanced himself away from everyone he knows and loves in a new city, Akashic Valley, in order to find peace, but peace never comes easy for men...
