Review of The Pen

Seinfeld: The Pen (1991)
Season 3, Episode 3
Only Show Without George and Kramer
28 January 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Kramer and George make Seinfeld as funny as it is, and at the same time, I'm not taking anything away from Elaine or Jerry. This episode takes place at Jerry's parents condo in Florida, and it is the only episode without Kramer or George, so naturally, I would've thought that it would be very tough to match the caliber of other episodes. Ironically, after seeing this episode, it is definitely in my top 10 of Seinfeld episodes, and probably in my top 5 (if I made a list). It was this episode, more than almost any of them, that proved how successful a show (let alone a episode) about nothing could be. The episode is really all about Jack Klompus's astronaut pen and "how it writes upside down". Jerry expressed interest in the pen and this lead to Jack forcibly giving Jerry the pen. This might as well caused mass hysteria in their community, with everyone arguing about Jerry taking Jack's pen, but others saying that Jack gave him the pen. There's much more to the episode, but my whole point of writing this review on this particular episode (since it was without George and Kramer) is that when Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David got together for the show during their long run, there was no mistaking that they were going to write a hilarious show every time. Combining both of them into one, Jerry's and Larry's minds were the comic genius of our time, if not of all time.
