Review of Darkman

Darkman (1990)
6/10
Goofy, pulpy comic book fun.

Warning: Spoilers
Darkman is actually the first R rated superhero movie that beat Deadpool 2 into theaters by decades. And it was born out of Sam Raimi's love of comic books.

He had, for a while, attempted to get the rights to such properties as Batman and the Shadow but these deals fell through so he just made his own superhero in the form of Darkman.

It's a rather simple story. The titular Darkman is actually Dr. Peyton Westlake played by Liam Neeson. He's developed an artificial skin that could help burn victims but for some reason it only lasts 90 minutes in the light before starting to disintegrate. Bad guys show up, he gets blown up, badly burned and left for dead.

Well we can't have that so he's taken to the hospital and because he's so badly burned they sever the nerve that causes pain. As such he's no longer able to feel pain and because of this his body is somehow pumping out more adrenaline than it should making him stronger than he should be. Just go with it. It makes things easier.

But he escapes and goes on a rampage, rebuilding his lab and trying to regain his life and the love lost when his girlfriend, played by Frances McDormand, thought he was dead. But due to his psychosis and his skin only lasting 90 minutes, he's unable to do much with her. So he goes to get revenge on the people that destroyed his life by making masks of their faces and infiltrating their gang.

The movie itself had help in the script writing department by the Coen Brothers themselves who have been long time friends of Sam Raimi and Joel's wife just happened to be Frances McDormand herself.

This isn't a movie to take seriously. It's made like a comic book with outlandish plots and villains that are a bit over the top. Enjoy it for what it is and what it was intended to be.
