Vikings: New Beginnings (2019)
Season 6, Episode 1
Historically illiterate

I can see already this season is made by people who do not know a lot about that part of Russian history. Oleg the Seer was a ruler (kniaz') of Novgorod and Kiev before Rus' became Christian in 988 AD. So things like the typical Christian Orthodox onion domes, are a bit out of place. Also the clothes are not very Russian. Oleg's henchmen look more Turkic than Slavic. I think they're supposed to be Pechenegs (but I doubt the creators know about them).. they were Turkic people living on the steppe. The creators should have looked up Ivan Belibin and Vsevolod Ivanov paintings to get a general impression of the clothes/people etc. They do speak a Slavic language here (Bulgarian I think). But the creators should have chosen Church Slavonic as a language, that is the closest (ceremonial) language to east Slavic.
