Excess of fan service does not help
1 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This review will make more sense if you have been a City Hunter fan for a long time.

All this movie is about sending you back to what City Hunter used to be by pulling all the strings you already know from the series:
  • All the situations are too familiar (litterally everything is predictable, from what is going to happen to what the characters are going to say). Love hotel scene, naked bar scene, shower scene, rooftop scene... ask it, you'll have it.
  • The soundtrack reuses old (and great) pieces but in awkward moments. They seem forced on you. Some are also cut in a weird way. The few new musics are very bad and do not fit.
  • When you see Cat's Eye as a guest, you have expectations. Well, don't. Besides being a taxi for a couple of minutes and putting Umibozu in a "ridiculous Vegeta moment" they are useless...
  • The robotic and technology flavor makes the lack of a decent bad guy more obvious. Fighting an army of clone robots was disappointing. Even the "cute" robot was a bother, but I guess every story needs its annoying Jar Jar Binks now...

... There are so many things to say about what went wrong here including CGI that does not blend in, some of the drawings and animation that are not up to standard for a "movie" format...

In short, this movie was a lazy attempt to surf on a long and excellent franchise by forcing ALL of the tricks from the series in 90 minutes. It felt really sad. I cannot recommend this to anyone...
