Alternate Martha is also only doing what she thinks is right. She still is similar to Jonas' Martha. You can see it in the less experience version of her, that travels with Jonas. She clearly grew up in a similar way as Jonas' Martha, since he mentioned her having the same experiences as his Martha. New Martha is more savage and definitely more interesting than first Martha! If I was Jonas, I would have asked how many people can travel using alt Martha's machine instead of experimenting on it right away. What you've seen here is how diff. Martha gives older Jonas the Materia to create the portal in that time. This is no spoiler, but you asked during the viewing: "what's the point of her being able to go back". Yes she lied, but she didn't do them dirty, she helped them. Dark just... Keeps delivering. And keeps adding further complexities - the three timelines of the first season feel almost like a tutorial teaching us the moves, with the casual jumps between multiple timelines in multiple worlds being now the final level. I'm floored, again and again, by the production design, by the sound design (the song s l a p s so hard, Chris Avantgarde and Red Rosamond are amazing, and if you know either or both - I am so envious, please send my admiration), the direction, the casting, the plot! The war between "Adam and Eva", between destroying the knot and preserving it, the layers of symbolism... Jantje Friese is a genius, and so is Bo Odar.

Interesting detail: Erit Lux, the saying on the cave door in Eva's World, and presumably the name of Eva's answer to Sic Mundus, is Latin for "Let There Be Light!", but interestingly enough, it's a very unusual wording, and an unusual choice. The traditional wording is Fiat Lux, which does translate to Let There Be Light, but Erit Lux means There Will Be Light - the former being a command, the latter a statement of fact about the future.

This makes me think that "Light" means the world, the knot, and that the "There will be light!" is a mission statement of sorts, announcing the group's intention to preserve the knot.

Sic Mundus Creatus Est is incidentally a quote from a text known as the Tabula Smaragdina (the picture in Mikkel's room, the tattoo on Noah's back and on the man in S2E1's chest is a variation on an 17th century engraving of it by Heinrich Khunrath), an esoteric text associated with alchemy and Hermes Trismegistus, an amalgamy of Hermes and Thoth commonly seen in occultism. Interestingly, the engraving on the Erit Lux door isn't the triquetra, but the caduceus, the symbol of Hermes... So! Much!! Symbolism!!!

Also fun fact, the Adam and Eve paintings in Eva's headquarters, by Lucas Cranach the Elder, are here in Vienna at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, and I am so gonna go see them.

...Can you tell that I love this show??
