Swedish small-town drama meets over-the-top action-comedy
5 August 2023
Josef Fares' follow-up to his successful debut Jalla, Jalla is an enjoyable combination of characteristic Swedish small-town drama and over-the-top action-comedy. Much of the comedy is carried by the character Benny the Cop, who is a brilliant invention by Fares and actor Torkel Petersson. When he plays out his childish fantasies of being a hero, it's like watching a tweener pretend playing with newfound but not total inhibitions. Benny and his colleagues Jacob, played by the director's brother Fares Fares, and Lasse (Göran Ragnerstam) start staging various crimes in their slumbering town when they realize their police station is under consideration for closing down. The ensuing situational comedy is sometimes hilarious and sometimes feeble, but always heartwarming.
