If These Walls Could Talk 2 (2000 TV Movie)

A Small Glimpse Into the Life of a Lesbian
15 February 2024
I think the entirety of the message of this movie can be summed up in almost the last quotes of this film.

Kal - "Hopefully by the time our child is old enough to know what discrimination is, the world will have changed a bit." Fran - "If It doesn't?" Kal - "If it doesn't, is an interesting question, because it always does."

The movie shows three different time's and in doing that, it's showing how things have changed over the last hundred years for lesbians. Even now, twenty-four years later after this movie was made, things are still changing in society. Maybe not as fast as we would like, but look at the difference from what it used to be.

The first part of the movie is very touching. And the most powerful. It shows us a couple who somehow stayed together their entire lives. Who were most likely born in the late 1800's. It shows how they had to keep everything a secret. The most simple and normal things most people take for granted, had to be a secret. It's very touching and it hits hard at the heart strings.

The Second story is a love story. It shows the conflict within the lesbian community as people fight for feminist rights. And how the times are slowly changing into a different era. It also sheds light on the activists who helped push for that change. And being brave to be completely open with who you are in public. And lastly it shows a modern day lesbian couple. And their struggle to get pregnant. The last story is very light and funny, but also holds a very deep message of the struggles in getting pregnant and wanting to be a biological birth parent.

The movie goes from dark and depressing and with each segments gets brighter. This effect causes us to see the change in discrimination for lesbians. And how the world has slowly changed with time. The movie really hits home with shedding light on the common struggles in the lesbian life. It's not just about tortured love, it's about things we take for granted in our relationships. Things that seem so normal for any heterosexual relationship, that lesbians struggle to have because of the views in society.

I love the fact that the entire movie isn't gloomy, instead it also focuses on the happiness of it. The filming is well done and the actresses are amazing. I love the cast. And it's a real treat to see Sharon Stone act like a girly-girl instead of a sex idol for men. Really good movie, well casted. And a great message.
