This is a beautiful series and much needed in a time where bad writing, gory cheap thrills, and gaudy superficialism are passing for art. Watching this I am not left with the hollow belly ache of mental junk food, instead I feel content and plump, dining on the slow courses of a gourmet meal. I leave nourished and whole.
Ewan Mcgregor's acting is transcendent, and the viewer is invited to slowly unwrap a story being told in the tradition of a good natured, nostalgic adventure. This is accomplished in the spirit of good story telling, and without sparing the audience of the true visceral threat of a world unraveled and put together again within the violence approaching post Lenin Russia.
McGregor's acting is so visceral yet subdued that we get to experience his character's adventure and make it our own, and we reemerge changed for the better with greater appreciation for the human spirit. I am left with a deeper sense of value for the lives of all human beings.
There are a lot of complaints about using black actors but I feel it works on multiple levels. Fehinti does an excellent job acting, his story of a marginalized human being experiencing senseless injustice, where his motives are good but lead to unforeseen tragic consequences through no real fault of his own. Social injustice is the larger heart of this story, and it has multiple layers. People are missing the point, it's not a historical reenactment, it's a story being told with depth and weight, with purpose.
The purpose of art is often to give voice to the voiceless, and if the art is really good, the spirit inside will sit up and pay attention.
There is catharsis to be had. It unravels and winds and narrows and opens up wide. It remains with me to guide my better judgement into real life.
It's obvious that the writers in Hollywood are no longer on strike, and I hope they are very well paid for the good work they are bringing to the screen. After this I'm going to look up their names and see what else they've written.
