Slim Hoover, chief of the police department of Resthurst, and Chief Hippo of the fire department, are enamored of village beauty Miss Magneto. Chief Hippo is the favored suitor until a fire breaks out in the apartment house where Miss Magneto resides. The Chief is delayed in arriving, because of Sallie Sloppus, his housekeeper, has borrowed his auto for a joyride. On arriving at the scene of the fire. Chief Hippo finds his hated rival Chief "Slim" directing the rescue work. They fight to decide who shall rescue Miss Magneto and that young lady is left to her own resources. Miss Magneto escapes while they are still fighting over her. While searching the ruins for Miss Magneto's body, the rival chiefs are confronted by the object of their search, very much "in the flesh," and both receive a "love-knockout."
