Reggae mastermind Lee “Scratch” Perry unveiled an ethereal new song, “Enlightened,” from his upcoming dub album, Heavy Rain, set to arrive December 6th via On-u Sound.
“Enlightened” finds Perry in vintage form, burrowing into a deep groove from which he unspools a hypnotizing mix of guitars, synths, drums and vocals. The song is accompanied by a video, in which Perry paints a note to God on a balloon then sends it up to the heavens.
Heavy Rain follows Perry’s most recent LP, Rainford, which was released in May. While...

Does This Mean Summer Is Coming? After stumbles, and slip-ups and a long Westeros winter of fan discontent, the sprawling saga of Game of Thrones is officially over – although all the pitched debate about the merits of the HBO show’s final season may rage on for weeks. What’s the legacy beyond that? To my mind, it’s a colossal legacy but, really, the show’s “death” on Sunday night will be just like Jon Snow’s evisceration in Season 5 – more like a temporary lull than a permanent exit, especially considering the ongoing publishing venture as well as the brand’s ramping spinoffs.

There’s no denying the race for documentary Oscar has changed dramatically in the past decade and even more so in the past five years. The reason for the shift? Money. What is debatable is if the shift is for the better.
There are many reasons for the recent exponential rise in docu campaign budgets. One is the 2012 Academy rule change that allowed for all members of the documentary branch to weigh in on the shortlist. Until 2011, small volunteer branch committees were in charge of viewing the year’s eligible entries, in their entirety, in order to form a shortlist. With an average of 100-plus docus eligible for Oscar consideration each year (this year there are 166 eligible films), ensuring a doc doesn’t get overlooked is a challenge for the majority of the qualified filmmakers. That challenge can be overcome with money, which leads to the second reason for the...

It's looking even more likely that Marvel's Inhumans TV show will be cancelled by ABC. Above and beyond floundering in the bottom of the ratings' barrel, it seems like word of the cancellation could be leaking to the larger ABC-Marvel television family. During last weekend's Heroes and Villains Fan Fest San Jose panel, Marvel's Agents of Shield star Ming-Na reportedly almost used the word "cancelled," when answering a fan's question about potential crossovers between the ABC TV series. An ABC series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel’s Inhumans stars Anson Mount, Iwan Rheon, Serinda Swan, Eme Ikwuakor, Isabelle Cornish, Ken Leung, Ellen Woglom, Sonya Balmores, and Mike Moh. Created by Scott Buck and based on the Marvel Comics by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Marvel’s Inhumans explores the Inhumans’ Royal Family. The sci-fi action drama centers on the mysterious Black Bolt (Mount), King of the...

Always a pleasure when a new issue of Rivers of London arrives, even more so when it is the start of a new story arc. You never quite know where this book will be going, so rich is the world the creators have made for us. I especially like the fact that the stories can be enjoyed entirely on their own merits for non-novel readers, but the stories are also placed in the book timeline for those that like that sort of thing. Like me.
Although a recap of the first issue of a new arc seems a tad strange, it’s probably needed as this isn’t a book where things happen in one issue and are never referenced again. Things happen and things matter in Peter Grant’s world. As we saw last issue,...

Fans don't have to worry that The Simpsons will be cancelled anytime too soon. Above and beyond (and okay, because of) its strong Nielsen ratings, Fox renewed its top scripted comedy series through season 30, back in November of 2016. Could that be the end of this long-running TV series? Will The Simpsons be cancelled or renewed beyond its 30th season? Stay tuned. An animated Fox sitcom, featuring the vocal talents of Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith, Harry Shearer, and Hank Azaria, The Simpsons comes from creator Matt Groening. The ageless yellow family continues to stir up the Springfield citizenry in this satirical sketch of small town Middle America. Read More…...

The Terminator series is making its third attempt at a trilogy. But would it be better as a one-off story, Ryan wonders...
Nb: The following contains spoilers for all the Terminator films released so far.

Genisys probably seemed like a good idea at the time. After the so-so critical and financial performance of Terminator 3 and Terminator: Salvation, the fifth entry in the series would, as far as its producers were concerned, take the saga back to its glory days: the nightmarish chases of The Terminator and the eye-popping special effects of T2, widely regarded as the franchise's high-water mark.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: If you could force Donald J. Trump to watch one movie for any reason (whether to educate him, torture him, amuse him, etc.), what would it be and why?
Tomris Laffly (@TomiLaffly), Film Journal, Film School Rejects
Can you really educate Trump through cinema? I think not. Put this year’s devastating trio of Syrian documentaries in front of him, and he’d say, “those people, including children, get what they deserve.” Make him watch a climate change film, and he’d call it fake news. For crying out loud, expose his eyeballs to “Finding Dory” and he’d probably mock poor Dory...

The Episode | “Once Bitten” (March 19, 2017)
The Performance | All season long on HBO’s Big Little Lies, Kidman’s character Celeste has projected the perfect façade: perfect marriage, perfect kids, perfect life. But in this week’s “Once Bitten,” that façade finally developed a few tiny cracks in it — allowing Kidman to deliver an astonishingly vulnerable performance.
Celeste’s marriage to Perry is volatile, and often violent, and Kidman has brought a fascinating complexity to that, with Celeste defending her husband’s abusive outbursts, and even admitting to being turned on by them.

As is always the case around this time of year, the Academy has given us a hint as to what’s eligible for nominations in certain categories. Today, I have the recently released list of eligible contenders in Best Documentary Feature to share with you all. There’s 124 docs in total hoping to score one of the five slots open at the Academy Awards. Historically, Oscar is fairly picky with their subject matter, but they do throw up some curveballs from time to time. This year, they’ll have as unique a choice to make as any, especially considering how there’s no true frontrunner right now. Of the numerous titles in contention, there’s a large group that bears specifically keeping an eye on. Just a small sample includes 1971, Above and Beyond, Amy, The Armor of Light, Batkid Begins, Best of Enemies, Cartel Land, The Diplomat, Every Last Child,...

At long last, DJ Mag has unveiled their top 100 DJs list of 2015. While this year’s results made for a predictable, cross section of the mainstream Edm talent pool’s most accomplished echelon, perhaps nothing spoke to the state of the scene as much as the #1 entry.
Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike secured the #1 spot for the first time in their career, all but proving that contemporary dance music is more manufactured than it’s ever been at any point throughout its history. The two artists are famous for enlisting the services of ghostwriters like Maarten Vorwerk to assist in their productions, and engaged in notoriously aggressive marketing campaigns to drum up votes.
More than ever, the results simply prove that the rankings are more for which artists have the biggest marketing budgets than anything else.

Hiroshima bombing 70th anniversary: Six movies dealing with the A-bomb terror Seventy years ago, on Aug. 6, 1945, the U.S. dropped the first atomic bomb over the city of Hiroshima. Ultimately, anywhere between 70,000 and 140,000 people died – in addition to dogs, cats, horses, chickens, and most other living beings in that part of the world. Three days later, America dropped a second atomic bomb, this time over Nagasaki. Human deaths in this other city totaled anywhere between 40,000-80,000. For obvious reasons, the evisceration of Hiroshima and Nagasaki has been a quasi-taboo in American films. After all, in the last 75 years Hollywood's World War II movies, from John Farrow's Wake Island (1942) and Mervyn LeRoy's Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944) to Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan (1998) and Michael Bay's Pearl Harbor (2001), almost invariably have presented a clear-cut vision...

You gotta love indie horror. There is something so warm and comforting about genre entries that fly under the radar, it's like a fluffy duvet while sitting on a couch drinking hot cocoa on a cold winters' eve when the snow falls outside, the rain drives against the windowpane and the wind whirls outside.
It Follows despite being made in 2014 has only recently been released after swimming around the depths for a while trying to find a distributor and thankfully, RADiUS-twc took a chance on David Robert Mitchells' delicious bastard child of 1980s' supernatural horror with a taste of 1970s' grindhouse. In that could essentially be as PSA against unsafe sex and STDs. It Follows is a swift, loving piece of the throwback and an optimistic window into the future of potentially great horror fare and not a slap across the face with a mackrel.

The following article contains a spoiler about the upcoming second half of the "Mad Men" season. It's not a big spoiler. It's about facial hair. But I feel like warning you anyway, given how secretive Matt Weiner and the "Mad Men" team are about even the least significant of spoilers. The last seven "Mad Men" episodes begin to roll out on Sunday, April 5 and other than that facial hair spoiler, there's no point in trying to get anybody to talk about where things are headed. But we were able to talk about where we've been, so if you haven't seen the 2014 episodes, that's spoiled here. Instead, when I sat down with John Slattery last week, we talked about where we left Roger Sterling last year, a seven-episode arc that saw the death of his professional mentor, the emotional loss of his daughter to a cult and the character's finale business...

Watching Fox’s wonderfully creative and ridiculously entertaining new series The Last Man on Earth, you can’t help but laugh (it’s a comedy — duh), but also be truly and utterly impressed. I can’t remember the last time I watched a half-hour sitcom and thought, “I’ve never seen anything like this.” Sure, the idea that a virus or plague has wiped out the entire world and there’s one guy left has been explored in sci-fi dramas before. But a comedy? On a broadcast network? Above and beyond all the joy I got from watching the first three episodes

This is a reprint of our review from the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. While Mauritanian-born director Abderrahmane Sissako has premiered three films at Cannes (winning a number of prizes including the Fipresci), and has served on three of its juries, including the Competition jury in 2007, “Timbuktu” represents his first film In Competition. This unusual profile, coupled with Sissako’s (rightly) outspoken opinions on the underrepresentation of African filmmaking in the average international festival lineup, might lead one to suspect a degree of tokenism in this film’s inclusion in the main competition this year, but these are suspicions that the film quickly lays to rest. “Timbuktu” inarguably stands on its own merits as a distinctive film told with both authenticity and artistry, and that makes human and visceral the kind of stories that most Western eyes read only as news headlines, if that. Above and beyond its educational value, “Timbuktu” is an impressively well-made film,...

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Disney's Into the Woods marks the first time Meryl Streep has ever played a witch, and she revealed to Et why that was the case.
Pics: The Most Trusted Stars in America
"Honestly, the idea of witches -- I think it's terror of older women that has lived in many different cultures and I don't like it," said Streep, 65, who remembered being offered three witch scripts the year she turned 40.
Fortunately Streep was able to make an exception for her latest performance, which is already the talk of the town. Based on the Broadway musical, Into the Woods follows the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk and Rapunzel, when a baker (James Corden) and his wife (Emily Blunt) want to begin a family despite their interaction with a witch (Streep), who puts a curse on them.
Streep's co-stars sang her praises during their chats with Et.

Los Angeles (AP) - Eleanor Parker, who was nominated for Academy Awards three times for her portrayals of strong-willed women and played a scheming baroness in "The Sound of Music," has died at 91.
Family friend Richard Gale said Parker died Monday morning due to complications from pneumonia. "She passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children at a medical facility near her home in Palm Springs," Gale added.
Parker was nominated for Oscars in 1950, 1951 and 1955, but then saw her career begin to wane in the early 1960s. Her last memorable role came in 1965's "The Sound of Music," in which she played the scheming baroness who loses Christopher Plummer to Julie Andrews.
"Eleanor Parker was and is one of the most beautiful ladies I have ever known," said Plummer in a statement. "Both as a person and as a beauty. I hardly believe the sad news...

Gaming is a multi-faceted experience. Above and beyond film, we have gameplay to turn it into a truly interactive artform. Anyone who disagrees is wrong. Chances are they haven’t experienced one of those moments where everything comes together at once – the story, the gameplay, the visuals and one of the ignored parts of the experience: the sound.
Of course, the ultimate expression of sound, is music. Music is the string that ties the package together. Without it, it just wouldn’t be the same experience. Some games forego a musical score to great effect (i.e. acclaimed indie classic Limbo). The music in Limbo is noticeable by its absence, which goes to show what a big part of the game it can sometimes be. Its presence or absence changes the mood as vibrantly as colour does for paintings.

It’s been just about 30 years since Cassandra Peterson first titillated the horror world as Elvira, a character that has been a pop culture staple since her debut in the 1980s. Spawning two of her very own movies and playing host to countless others, the Mistress of the Dark is without question one of the most iconic and beloved characters in horror history, her ample bosom and beehive hairdo as integral a part of the Halloween season as Count Chocula, caramel apples and black cats. Three decades later, Peterson looks as beautiful today as she ever has, and the character is still being kept alive both by Cassandra and her legions of fans, who simply can’t get enough of the fun, snarky and ultra-sexy appeal that she brings to the world of blood and guts. Elvira’s the kind of character that all her female fans want to be...

It is hard to imagine a band better suited to a collaboration with an astronaut than the Barenaked Ladies.
Famously (and unabashedly) nerdy in their interests -- "I'm a space geek!" proclaims frontman Ed Robertson -- the Ladies' millions of fans often identify themselves that way, too. There's a reason, aside from the the Canadian band's knack for penning unforgettably catchy songs, that they were chosen to write and record the theme for that geekiest of TV shows, 'The Big Bang Theory.'
Perhaps that's why Cmdr. Chris Hadfield -- who recently announced his retirement from the Canadian Space Agency -- chose to get in touch with Robertson while he was floating around on the International Space Station earlier this year. He wanted to co-write and record a song, to create the first ever earth-space musical collaboration. Robertson loved the idea, but didn't quite realize how big a deal it would eventually become.

Eleanor Parker today: Beautiful as ever in Scaramouche, Interrupted Melody Eleanor Parker, who turns 91 in ten days (June 26, 2013), can be seen at her most radiantly beautiful in several films Turner Classic Movies is showing this evening and tomorrow morning as part of their Star of the Month Eleanor Parker "tribute." Among them are the classic Scaramouche, the politically delicate Above and Beyond, and the biopic Interrupted Melody, which earned Parker her third and final Best Actress Academy Award nomination. (Photo: publicity shot of Eleanor Parker in Scaramouche.) The best of the lot is probably George Sidney’s balletic Scaramouche (1952), in which Eleanor Parker plays one of Stewart Granger’s love interests — the other one is Janet Leigh. A loose remake of Rex Ingram’s 1923 blockbuster, the George Sidney version features plenty of humor, romance, and adventure; vibrant colors (cinematography by Charles Rosher); an elaborately staged climactic swordfight; and tough dudes...
