A release date has been announced for Joston Theney's Axeman 2: Overkill. This slasher feature and follow-up to the 2013 film will be released in mid-October. The film involves a few groups of people and one crazed axe-wielding local legend. This is no Paul Bunyan, though. And, the bodies pile up at Cutter's Creek. In the film, Farrah Abraham ("Teen Mom"), Rachel Reilly ("Big Brother"), Angelica Bridges and Bryan Clark star. A preview of the film's launch is hosted here. The trailer shows lots of bloodshed. As the Axeman goes about his business, the characters look for escape. But, no one knows Cutter's Creek like this notorious killer. #SinningWorks will be releasing the film. Axeman 2: Overkill will be available in a Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack, this October 17th. This title will also be showing through Video-on-demand platforms, on this date. Fans of slashers can find all of the...

Clowns were always creepy, but then Stephen King came along. In 1986, King published “It,” which introduced the world to seven scrappy kids nicknamed The Losers Club, who faced off against a child-killing, shape-shifting clown named Pennywise, an evil entity that was infesting their hometown of Derry, Maine. Derry had popped up in several King novels before “It,” including “Pet Cemetery” and the novella “The Body,” which served as the source material for the film “Stand By Me,” but it wasn’t until “It” that King fans really got to know the dark history and evil lurking in the sewers of the fictional Maine town.
With King’s mammoth novel sitting around 1,138 pages, the bloody details of Derry’s darkest days are fleshed out across multiple time periods. But, as with so many film adaptations of classic novels, not everything in the book makes the final cut. Even 1990’s “It” TV mini-series,...

Chicago – The road to athletic success is littered with the clichés of “might have been” and “never was,” but rarely does it contain a success story that is despite the person who achieved that success. In the early 1990s, a journeyman broke into the National Basketball Association, the first time in its history that a player that never graduated from high school made it to the big show. That man is Lloyd Daniels, and his story is in the documentary “The Legend of Swee’ Pea,” by filmmaker Benjamin May. The director will appear – with his cinematographer Daniel Levin – on behalf of his film at its Chicago premiere, presented by the Midwest Independent Film Festival on Tuesday, March 7th, 2017 (details below).

In December at their 2017 Genre Showcase event, 20th Century Fox previewed the first 42 minutes of Logan, the eagerly awaited final chapter of the Wolverine saga. Daily Dead was in attendance at the event, and to give readers a big idea of what to expect, we have highlights from director James Mangold’s comments at the event, as well as our impressions of the intense footage that was shown.
After appearing as the character in now nine films (including his X-Men: First Class cameo) Hugh Jackman teams up once again with director James Mangold to bring his run as the “Mutant Formerly Known As Weapon X” to an end.
The two last brought the character to the screen in 2013 with The Wolverine, when original director Darren Aronofsky bowed out after a lengthy pre-production phase. The results were mostly positive, but moments felt hamstrung by superhero movie clichés, such as the out-of-place...

What really baffles me about being a critic is indecision. I think when a film is really good, it deserves praise. When a film is really bad, it deserves to be pointed out. But when a film lands in the middle, in the “I’m just not sure how to handle it,” it really bothers me.
Clowntown is the collaboration of first-time feature length director Tom Nagel and Axe Giant: Wrath of Paul Bunyan writer Jeff Miller. This pairing of minds might result in a rather interesting experience, especially when “Bunyan” writer Miller is concerned. I saw “Bunyan” and happened to find it hilarious. So going into this film, I think I had different expectation that the result I got was.
I envisioned with a name like Clowntown a visceral sort of Krampus film that will end up making me laugh and creep me out at the same time.

Whitney Cummings is livid at a neighbor who she claims went all Paul Bunyan in her backyard, and now cops are investigating. We're told Whitney walked in her backyard this week and was horrified to see a tree massacre, courtesy of her neighbor's gardener. Seems the neighbor was frustrated that Whitney's wall of bark was blocking his view, and she says he ordered the landscaper to do a hatchet job on her property ... cutting the trees down to stumps.

In a thousand years or so, nobody is going to be able to say with any certainty whether or not Matthew McConaughey really existed. Everything about him is simply too uniquely weird for him to be anything but a folklore hero like Johnny Appleseed or Paul Bunyan. David Bowie’s whole thing was being weird, but we know he was real because that’s what made his weirdness so impactful, but McConaughey? He’s a space man philosopher who wins awards for acting, appears as the spokesperson for a famous bourbon brand, and then just floats around in the meantime studying the world and learnings its secrets like some totally chill immortal with an infinite amount of time to just do whatever. Who benefits from that being the description of a real person?
Anyway, the latest place to which the winds of fate have carried McConaughey is the Rio Olympics...

Since 1989, the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress has been accomplishing the important task of preserving films that “represent important cultural, artistic and historic achievements in filmmaking.” From films way back in 1897 all the way up to 2004, they’ve now reached 675 films that celebrate our heritage and encapsulate our film history.
Today they’ve unveiled their 2015 list, which includes classics such as Douglas Sirk‘s melodrama Imitation of Life, Hal Ashby‘s Being There, and John Frankenheimer‘s Seconds. Meet the 2015 Sundance Filmmakers #9: 'Welcome to Leith' Directors Tackle Extremism in Rural America
With their latest film, filmmakers Michael Beach Nichols and Christopher K. Walker venture outside the urban milieu of New York and travel deep into the Midwest. It's a challenge in terms of subject matter, but also, at the same time, not much of a surprise that they would choose to explore rural life in the United States given their oblique fascination with the mountain man aesthetic, as seen in "Delivery," the 10-minute short they produced last year about a middle-aged Brooklyn pizza delivery man who looks an awful lot like Paul Bunyan. What's your film about in 140 characters or less?A notorious white supremacist attempts to take over a town of 24 people in North Dakota. Now what's it really about? The film is ultimately a Western standoff that begs the question: how does an isolated community respond to a version of extremism protected by the law? Tell us briefly about yourself.

[As you probably already know, starting on Thursday, August 21, Fxx is running the Every Simpsons Ever Marathon, running through all 552 episodes of "The Simpsons," plus "The Simpsons Movie." To aid in your viewing process, Team HitFix is selecting our favorite episodes from each day, plus an episode or two that you can skip and use as a bathroom or nap break.] Day 7 of Fxx's Every Simpsons Ever Marathon goes from "Simpsons Tall Tales" (the end of Season 12) through to "The President Wore Pearls" (the beginning of Season 15). I must admit: The "Simpsons" fans on Team HitFix are beginning to drop like flies. Josh Lasser's fandom carried through the Tomacco episode, but no further. David Lewis wrote a blurb here for "Simpsons Tall Tales," the episode he says ended his active support of the show. Fortunately, Sepinwall and I had a pair of favorites apiece and Katie Hasty also had a preferred episode, so we've got some recommendations for you, plus a couple episodes you can avoid. [And while I only wrote up two episodes I love, there are at least 10 more that I'll be happy to rewatch if I'm around and another 10 more that I'd enjoy having on in the background. Possibly more. This may be the worst period for "The Simpsons" thus far, but I'll always maintain that middling-to-poor "Simpsons" is still more rewatchable than nearly anything else on TV.] Check out our recommendations for Day 7 and chime in with your own favorites... Writer and director Joe Begos’ Almost Human (2013) may draw influence from the oft-remade “Body Snatcher” genre of science-fiction, but where he strives to stand apart is by bringing the classic standard to the modern grindhouse horror audience. This is a gory, violent rendition of the concept of alien creatures taking over human bodies and controlling them from within like robots. While this approach has its niche market, I always contend that viewers should try and look past the gore and violence but still embrace it as they experience the film as a whole, then make judgments based on more than simply the visceral sights and sounds that may prove distasteful on their own.
Almost Human, not to be mistaken for the short-lives futuristic sci-fi television series that aired the same year, presents itself with a surprisingly low key, unassuming disposition of simplicity. The film avoids the more darkly comedic, or...

It’s a shame that more viewers aren’t able to focus on the weirdness of The Leftovers instead of its melancholy. And it only gets stranger from there…

Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka guest judge, as the Queens have to drag a wedding on this episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race.
This week’s mini-challenge was the most arbitrary of the season, as the Queens had to create a Twerk Of Art that represented marriage equality … by rolling around in paint on top of a canvas. All of the creations looked like … someone had rolled around in paint on top of a canvas, but somehow Ru saw something special in Bianca’s piece, so she got the win.
For the main challenge, Ru announces that he’s an ordained minister, and will be conducting marriage ceremonies on the main stage, and it’s up to the Queens to give drag makeovers (and act as the Drag Mothers) … but not to the brides-to-be, but the grooms, who are mostly varying degrees of Paul Bunyan.
So how did the Queens do?...

The second word in the title of "Farmhouse Rules," the popular Sunday morning Food Network show that wraps its first season on Dec. 22, has a double meaning.
First, host Nancy Fuller uses the word as a synonym for "recipes," just as her grandmother did. On another level, though, the word could apply to the down-home principles Fuller advocates in her comfort-food dishes from New York's Hudson Valley, starting with "keep it fresh and natural."
The season finale finds her focusing on the 13 apples of her eye -- her grandkids -- as she preps a kid-friendly menu that includes grilled meatloaf sandwiches, potato salad and a berry fruit cobbler.
Fuller, whose past career also includes running a restaurant and catering business, has made a few adjustments to her vintage recipes over the years, sometimes to make them healthier, but often "old school" has turned out to be better.

Symphonic gothic horror musicians Midnight Syndicate have just released the Axe Giant The Wrath Of Paul Bunyan: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. The album, produced by Midnight Syndicate, features highlights from the movie score composed by Edward Douglas along with The Ballad of Paul Bunyan performed by Hick’Ry Hawkins.

The One Ring has just posted the very first image of Beorn from Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy. As you can see in the image below, the fictional shape-shifter, is chopping wood on his farm. What is most jarring, is that Beorn doesn't look anything like the description that J.R.R. Tolkien provided in his book. Beorn was of immense size and strength for a man, and retained his size and strength in bear-form. He had black hair (in either form) and a thick black beard and broad shoulders (in human form). While not a "giant" outright, Beorn's human form was of such great size. This version below, could rock out to Achy Breaky Heart with that skunk like mullet on his head. Who is playing Beorn, Billy Ray Cyrus? It's quite a departure, going from a vision of Paul Bunyan to some sort of semi-wolfman/skunkman. What do you guys and gals think?...

Going into a film called Axe Giant: The Wrath Of Paul Bunyan it really is hard to know what to expect or what sort of film it is. As I went in without knowing anything, I was surprised to find a fun and watchable film. I kind of know a little about Paul Bunyan, a lumberjack legend and I’ve seen pictures so I had that kind of image in mind. This film however takes that legend and adds a spin to it, a pretty good idea to make this its own thing.
Storywise, sure this isn’t wholly original; a group of young adults (first time offenders in boot camp) go off camping as part of a program. Things aren’t what they expected as something is lurking in the woods … I think you know the rest.
What makes this work is the legend itself,...
Going into a film called Axe Giant: The Wrath Of Paul Bunyan it really is hard to know what to expect or what sort of film it is. As I went in without knowing anything, I was surprised to find a fun and watchable film. Remember that bizarro Paul Bunyan-based horror movie I told you about a few weeks back? If not, that’s okay. I don’t expect you to remember all of the cinematic garbage I try to shove into your brain at any given moment of the day. Well, apparently the good folks over at SyFy have snagged the rights to “Axe Giant: The Wrath of Paul Bunyan” and are preparing to unleash it upon the masses this Thursday (June 13). My faith in American entertainment is restored. The setup is pretty simple: Kids are in the woods with a giant. And the giant, you see, he’s got a relaly big axe. And the kids are going to die. That’s the movie in a nutshell, and I haven’t even seen the damned thing yet. Like many of you, my entire evening is currently planned around the television premiere of “Axe Giant.

You win some, you lose some; then you win some again. So the business of Hollywood goes ...
Last week, Guy Ritchie's rather cast-beleaguered film, "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." lost its main star Tom Cruise due to scheduling issues with his recent "Mission: Impossible 5" commitment — sure, the attachment of the Paul Bunyan-sized Armie Hammer had nothing to do with Cruise's decision to exit (wink, wink) — but now it looks like Ritchie's tapped a very heroic replacement indeed: the "Man of Steel" himself, Henry Cavill!
Yep, per The Hollywood Reporter, the suave super man is now in talks to stretch out step into Cruise's shoes as U.S. spy agent Napoleon Solo, opposite Hammer's Soviet Illya Kuryakin.
For the uninitiated, "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." is Guy Ritchie's pet project adaptation of the '60s TV show of the same name. Cavill and Hammer will star as the unlikely...

When I think of Paul Bunyan, my mind instantly recalls the classic Disney cartoon I watched a million times before heading off to school as a child. It was sweet, colorful, and didn’t feature the big guy breaking the necks of woodland creatures. I’ve been looking forward to Axe Giant: The Wrath of Paul Bunyan ever since I first heard about it, and it won’t be too much longer until we all get a chance to see what happens when a great American tall tale gets a monstrous slasher makeover.
Is it correct to call it a slasher? If the killer’s preferred instrument of death is an axe and the killer in question is a giant lumberjack, then wouldn’t it be more appropriate to call it a hacker? Eh, I’m over-thinking this.

One of the most prolific and indispensable character actors of the last 30 years, Luis Guzman is a walking time capsule of our generation. But did you know that Arnold Schwarzenegger's trusty co-star in "The Last Stand" has lived a sort of Paul Bunyan-esque life? We've compiled some fun facts about Luis that you may not have known.
In the time it takes you to read this sentence, Luis will have acted in nine different movies. In the time it took you to just say "Really?," he was in five more. You can hand Luis your script and he'll have it memorized by three days ago. Some high schools have assigned Luis' IMDb page as summer reading and even the better students find it difficult to finish because of its length. This week sees Claudia and Steve get closer to learning Artie's secret, a visit by a fan(fic) favorite, and ... something we've been patiently waiting for all season.
Let's start with Pete and Myka's "A" story.
Pete proves that he is, indeed, a Secret Service Agent
The team is assigned to investigate possible artifact activity in South Bend, as seemingly random people are experiencing painful growth spurts. Could it be Paul Bunyan's ax? David's slingshot? A magical bag of beans? Artie says, "We have the ax, we have the slingshot, and the beans? Please, that's just a fairytale." Pete responds, "It's good to know where we draw the line."
The people include a nervous hypochondriac, a spunky baker, and a stressed-out lawyer. Add "redneck sheriff" and it would be the perfect acting workshop exercise. "They're all trapped on an elevator, and .....go!"
From the Jack Skellington collection.

February House Public Theater, NY
In a theater season dominated by musicals adapted from movies, it is nice to see an original new musical, but originality alone is no guarantee of a fully realized and satisfying entertainment. February House, the new musical opening at the Public Theater, is indeed original. It has its assets, including intelligence and an impressive score, but it is also uneven. While the musical has moments that are close to magical, it ultimately left me wishing it had delivered more than it did.
February House is inspired by real-life events. In 1940, flamboyant editor George Davis took a house in Brooklyn and turned it into a bohemian commune for writers and artists, including such icons as Carson McCullers, Benjamin Britten, W.H. Auden, and Gypsy Rose Lee. The musical depicts life at what was called February House -- because so many of those artists had February birthdays --...
