I Bury the Living implicates us in a primal childhood thought-crime… what if you stepped on a crack and really did break your mother’s back? What if simply wishing someone dead made it so? Guilt, pure and simple, gives this off–kilter 50’s chiller its lasting power.
The film boasts an off–kilter leading man as well with the crater-faced Richard Boone as Robert Kraft, a small town business man railroaded into managing the family run cemetery. To make matters worse, the perennially gloomy Kraft, already skittish about his disconcerting new position, is saddled with a decrepit, unnaturally chilly workplace watched over by an unnerving bit of decoration, an...

Yesterday, amid a crush of sweaty people desperate for last-minute props, I visited a local Halloween superstore with my daughter, looking for a Pikachu mask. Well, there wasn’t much to choose from in the Cute Kid Division. But this particular hall of Halloween hell definitely had the adult sensibility covered. Of course there were the usual skimpy or otherwise outrageous costumes for purchase —ladies, you can dress up like a sexy Kim Kardashian-esque vampire out for a night of Hollywood clubbing, and gents, how about impressing all the sexy Kim Kardashian vampires at your party by dressing up like a walking, talking matched set of cock and balls! It’s been a while since I’ve shopped for fake tools of terror, but it seems there’s been a real advance in sophistication in the market for “Leatherface-approved” (I swear) chainsaws with moving parts and authentic revving noises,...

or, Savant picks The Most Impressive Discs of 2015
This is the actual view from Savant Central, looking due North.
What a year! I was able to take one very nice trip back East too see Washington D.C. for the first time, or at least as much as two days' walking in the hot sun and then cool rain would allow. Back home in Los Angeles, we've had a year of extreme drought -- my lawn is looking patriotically ratty -- and we're expecting something called El Niño, that's supposed to be just shy of Old-Testament build-me-an-ark intensity. We withstood heat waves like those in Day the Earth Caught Fire, and now we'll get the storms part. This has been a wild year for DVD Savant, which is still a little unsettled. DVDtalk has been very patient and generous, and so have Stuart Galbraith & Joe Dante; so far everything...

For the final week of November, horror and sci-fi fans have a few things to be thankful for, including some great films they can add to their home entertainment collections. With the holidays just right around the corner, Rlj Entertainment is releasing A Christmas Horror Story and Scream Factory is resurrecting a duo of classic films in HD on Tuesday as well—Ghost Story and Blood and Lace.
Other notable titles being released on November 24th include The Badger Game, The Last House, The Mask 3-D and The Incredible Two-Headed Transplant.
A Christmas Horror Story (Rlj Entertainment, Blu-ray & DVD)
It’s the season of joy, peace, and goodwill… unless you live in Bailey Downs. Last Christmas Eve, two teens came to a grisly end in a school basement. Now, one year later, a new set of horrors has come to town. As three friends explore the site of the massacre,...

Joe Dante is one of the collaborators behind the site Trailers From Hell, which regularly posts videos of directors speaking about films of their choice. For this video, Dante himself appears to give a little history on the 1961 horror film The Mask. Topics of discussion include anaglyph 3D, the rise of Canucksploitation, and the exploits of late publicist Jim Moran (who once sat on an ostrich egg for 19 days until it hatched as part of a publicity stunt).

Writer Lee Gambin digs up and appreciates a classic dark American drama. Set against the backdrop of mid-west America during the late 1800s, in a small halcyon town that is magically depicted as shadowy and a host to a enumeration of deep rooted secrecy, Albert (father of B-movie God Charles Band and director of the…

Julian Roffman’s "The Mask," Canada’s first horror film, alternates a routine 2-D horror story with trippy psychedelic fantasy sequences centering on a haunted Aztec artifact. Viewers were given Magic Mystic Masks to see the dreams in anaglyphic 3-D—and no, they didn’t look anything like the clunky mask seen in this odd trailer. Reissued repeatedly over the years as "Eyes of Hell," it’s now been restored by Bob Furmanek’s 3-D Archive and is due to be booked in theaters once more, this time in proper Polaroid 3-D. A 3-D Blu-ray is available from Kino.

Don't Wait! Put on the mask, Now! The legendary 1961 spook-show classic has been restored and adapted to a better 3-D system than used for its original release. A psychiatrist possessed by a Mayan ritual mask is compelled to enter a fantastic hell zone each time he wears the scary thing. Kino packs the deluxe disc with extras, including a 2014 3-D short subject with its own "Let's go to Hell" story concept. We see Hell, all right. But where are the trailers from it? Tiff restores the classic 3D film The Mask to its full anaglyphic glory. The last time I saw Julian Roffman’s 1961 Canadian horror movie The Mask (aka The Eyes Of Hell). It was via an Elvira branded/hosted VHS release in the late 1980’s, spat out by good old Rhino Video and it was a bummer to…

Look at that image above. Seriously. Marvel in it. That's from Julian Roffman's 1961 effort The Mask, which stands as both the first feature length horror film and first feature length 3D film ever produced in Canada. And you've got a chance to see it on the big screen, fully restored as it was originally intended. The first feature-length Canadian horror movie and the first feature-length 3D film made in Canada, Julian Roffman's 1961 cult classic has now been digitally restored in 2K anaglyph 3D by Tiff and the 3-D Film Archive. A psychiatrist comes into possession of an ancient tribal mask that, when worn, assails him with nightmarish visions of monsters, occultists, and ritual torture. Believing that he has discovered a portal to the deepest...

We need to talk about Bruce Wayne. Until "The Mask," Bruce has not been one of Gotham's most interesting characters. In fact, he hasn't really been more than the show's figurehead. Bruce is the human catalyst that motivates James Gordon, the show's real lead protagonist, to wage war on both the mob and Gotham's mobbed-up guardians. So it's a good thing that Bruce is more prominent in "The Mask," an episode where Gordon reaffirms his crusade against everything corrupt in Gotham: "Falcone, Maroni, every cop that's dirty: I'm gonna get 'em." More important, Gordon finally gets help from his fellow Gcpd officers, and not just partner Harvey Bullock. Captain Sarah Essen makes a very public display of solidarity with Gordon when she offers to help Bullock look for Gordon when he goes missing. But I'm getting ahead of myself. In tonight's episode, Bruce Wayne stepped out of Gordon's shadow and...
