The £20,000 Kiss
Prismark1018 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
There is a very intriguing mystery here. A convoluted plot with several twists.

This is a well directed adaptation. It also made me wonder if Richard Thorp was wasted in all those years in Emmerdale Farm.

Thorp plays John Durran a tenacious private investigator. He has been hired by middle aged Sir Harold Trevitt. He is a barrister and a politician on his way up.

Trevitt is due to get married soon, a match that will help his career ladder.

Only thing is Trevitt has been carrying on with his new married neighbour Maxine Hagen in the apartment block.

Maxine's cleaner Paula Blair takes a photo of them kissing and later makes a demand for money.

Durran looks into the blackmail scandal. The case gets murkier. Blair ends up dead, she was in cahoots with Maxine's husband Leo in the blackmail plot.

I would have loved to see more of Thorp as John Durran. I wonder if a spin off series was ever considered with Alfred Burke as his friend in the police who also had a few tricks up his sleeve.

Lots of blackmail and Murder, fine episode.
Sleepin_Dragon8 March 2023
Businessman and upcoming Politician Sir Harold Trevitt is photographed in a compromising position with his neighbour Maxine by Maid Paula, a demand for blackmail is issued, a threat so strong it pushes someone to murder.

It's another very intriguing, tightly written whodunnit, an engaging mystery which is loaded with twists and turns, everything may appear to be black and white, but of course noting is at it seems.

I would suggest you concentrate on it, as you could easily lost the plot so to speak, it goes from blackmail to murder, and back to blackmail again, it is a very pleasing, layered plot.

Well filmed and very nicely directed, it's well paced and visually very pleasing, I'm not always a fan of flashbacks, but the sequences worked well in the summing up.

Two great characters in particular, Richard Thorp's plays John Durran a tenacious private investigator John Durran and Alfred Burke as Inspector Waveney, watching this makes me want to reach for The Public Eye dvds.

I bet he wished he'd never kissed her, the cost of it spiralled.

7/10.

Complicated and Convulouted

It is easy to spot the films based on original Wallace Novels as they have the most intricate plot construction. This sort of construction would clearly take much more time than would be available to the writer of such a low budget film. The basic story is of the blackmailing of a well known MP and QC who is caught in a rather compromising position shortly before his wedding. However nothing is as it seems and the plot goes some contortions to get to what i have to confess was a rather surprising ending. All the usual ingredients are present.Lots of familiar faces many long since dead and forgotten including the beautiful Dawn Adams who died at the tragically early age of 54.Michael Goodliffe plays a typical role for him as the errant barrister.Certainly one of the better of the series.

Another good UK crime mystery.

Warning: Spoilers
I guess I won't never get tired of this kind of productions from over the Channel. Short, sharp, exciting little yarns with good schemes that always surprise us, even sometimes hard to follow. We find here often the same schemes, like this one. But it is so well made, edited and told to the audiences. The usual story of a wealthy man whose wife have an affair with another guy. A wealthy man whose position in the society can't allow to have a scandal about his private life; and of course a man who becomes the perfect prey for a blackmail job...

We stay tuned to this tale from the beginning to the end. No real action sequences but a solid and taut suspense. You can trust me.

Above average mystery
coltras3510 March 2023
When barrister and politician Sir Harold Trevitt (Michael Goodliffe) shares an impromptu kiss with his neighbour Maxine Hagen (Dawn Addams), her maid Paula (Mia Karam) catches them in the act and then blackmails them. Sir Harold hires a private detective and eventually gives in and pays her. As John Durran the private detective says, "you never finish paying a blackmailer", and of course the payment becomes just the first instalment.

Sounds simple, but the fast-paced plot veers into many avenues and you are forced to pay attention. The denouement is really a double-twister - the acting is great. The whodunnit element is quite strong and engaging.

"She's the one discreet girl in London"
hwg1957-102-2657049 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Two people, Maxine Hagen and Sir Harold Trevitt, are blackmailed by the husband and maid of Maxine. A private detective John Durran is called in, then the maid is found dead. Inspector Waveney investigates. The plot twisted and turned and eventually tied itself up in knots. The conclusion is most unsatisfying. It has a good cast and a few passable moments but not enough to make it more than tolerable. Paul Whitsun-Jones steals all his scenes though as the gossip journalist Charles Pinder. Not one of the better Edgar Wallace adaptations. It is based very loosely on one of his short stories with the same title.

Even more incomprehensible than usual

Warning: Spoilers
The cross-eyed maid and the husband are in a plot to blackmail the wife. But the beautiful wife has a little trick of "feeling faint" and then falling into the arms of the nearest man. Is this just her private scam? And then there's the thing about the husband's silenced duelling pistols. One is is "favourite", but it doesn't actually work, but they were swapped and... Alfred Burke as the policeman has a go at explaining the plot in the last few minutes, but you can see he is laughing at its absurdity. Glamorous women, expensive clothes and lush interior decor, though!
