The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.
Night of the Demon
Not to be confused with the 1957 film of the same name (also on Screambox), 1980’s Night of the Demon is an unforgettable Bigfoot experience. It’s no surprise that the gory exploitation flick was prosecuted as a “video nasty” by the British Board of Film Classification upon its initial release. It’s best remembered for a scene in which Bigfoot rips off a guy’s manhood — and that’s not even the most outrageous death scene!
The cheesefest plays like an early slasher, but instead of a masked killer lurking in the woods, it’s a guy in a cheap gorilla costume.

Lucio Fulci, Frankenhooker and more in our round up of new horror Blu-rays and DVDs...
So, what’s your personal idea of hell? For this writer, it would almost certainly involve being chained down in the audience of an eternal live filming of Loose Women as Donald Trump waves a slice of tiger bread, forever just out of reach. Yours is likely to be similar, though it would have to be pretty grim indeed to come anywhere near Lucio Fulci’s 1981 career-best infernal vision and perhaps the definitive (obviously other than Little Nicky) cinematic depiction of eternal damnation, The Beyond.

Anna Biller’s delicious debut —the stylish, technicolor-esque “The Love Witch”— is like nothing you’ve seen before. Or at least nothing you’ve likely seen in decades. A throwback and campy “horror” movie, “The Love Witch” is part softcore erotica, part ‘60s pulpy psychedelia and a hybrid of influences like “Vampyros Lesbos,” “The Wicker Man,” the films of Russ Meyer, Jess Franco and countless sexploitation movies from the 1960s and ‘70s.

The French New Wave did not invent the idea of exploring a city through the wanderings of a couple—F.W. Murnau suggest as much from the Fox studio backlot in Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans, and Luchino Visconti offered his own glorious fairy tale stroll of Cinecittà’s Venice in White Nights—but that movement certainly provided an invigorating, youthful inspiration to an emerging generation of international filmmakers to orient their cinema to the relationships close to them and to streets they know so well. Thus we see Catalonian director José María Nunes’s 1966 masterpiece Noche de vinto tinto (Red Wine Night), which begins with a young woman distraught when her boyfriend breaks a promised date and, going out into the night, she attaches herself to a failed Romeo. The character of their meeting encapsulates all the oneiric, irrational, partially romantic, partially despondent tenor of the evening of bar hopping that follows,...

Severin Films make their return to the UK home video market with the Blu-ray release of two Jess Franco films in their library, She Killed in Ecstasy and Vampyros Lesbos – erotically charged Euro-horrors starring Franco fave Soledad Miranda which mark the pinnacle of Franco’s career. The former, a revenge thriller, is considered the best of the 200-odd films the Spanish auteur has made, whilst the latter is a crowd-pleasing slice of sleaze (who doesn’t love lesbian vampires) that is also an oddly-faithful adaptation of Dracula.

What are widely considered to be the finest works of late, great Euro-cult master Jess Franco’s labyrinthine career, his 1971 erotic horrors Vampyros Lesbos and She Killed in Ecstasy have long been sought after by cult cinema collectors. Now, for the first time ever in the UK, the fully restored, uncensored versions of both films will be available in Special Editions from Severin Films.
Both films star the bewitching beauty Soledad Miranda, who was tragically killed before either film was released, and achieved additional cult status thanks to the sexadelic, ultra groovy soundtrack that became an unexpected dance floor hit three decades after original release.
Vampyros Lesbos has already had successful and acclaimed theatrical screenings in the UK ahead of these releases, and the time is set for the extraordinary work of the mercurial Franco to reach out to a brand new audience. Featuring newly created cover art by Wes Benscoter,...

Irksome, dazzling, baffling, eerie, luminous, silly, turgid and unique, The Dead Mountaineer's Hotel delights and frustrates in equal measure. It's easily the best Estonian sci-fi detective story I've ever seen. And yes, it's the only one.I believe Isaac Asimov had some kind of rule about detective stories being difficult in science fiction because if the reader doesn't know the rules, he or she can't fairly be expected to have a chance of guessing the answer to the mystery. This film certainly falls prey to that problem, as despite its occult atmosphere it doesn't tip its hand that anything truly out-of-this-world is going on until the third act. Once we're allowed to know the secret, the film ceases to be a mystery at all and actually works a lot better.First things: a detective arrives at the titular mountain resort, following up an anonymous tip. The hotel itself is dazzlingly...

August 18th is bringing horror and sci-fi fans a bounty of home entertainment choices this week, especially if you’re into cult classics and indie genre films. Titles arriving on Tuesday include newer movies like Cub, Ejecta and Closer to God as well as the latest from the Soska Sisters, Vendetta. Several older films are getting an HD overhaul on Blu-ray too, including Nomads, The Hunger, Nightmare Castle, The Wife Killer and the supernaturally-infused Burn, Witch, Burn which was also co-penned by Richard Matheson.
And while it may not necessarily be a full-on genre movie, it’s worth noting that Shout! Factory is also releasing the criminally underrated cyber-adventure/thriller Hackers onto Blu-ray this week to celebrate its upcoming 20th anniversary.

Award-winning indie filmmakers Sophia Cacciola and Michael J. Epstein (Magnetic, Ten) have launched their latest Kickstarter to fun their third feature, Blood of the Tribades. Described as a Hammer- and Jean Rollin-inspired, '70s lesbian vampire film, Cacciola and Epstein namecheck the majestic Countess Dracula, Twins of Evil, Vampyros Lesbos, and The Shiver of the Vampires as influences. Not content to simply be a vampire lesbian film, the story also focuses in on a socio-political statement. From the film's description: "A vampire named Bathor turned an entire village to vampires, stuck around long enough to teach them to survive, and then promised to return 2,000 years after conquering the rest of the continent. The only problem with this plan is that the vampires, although immortal, have only a...

The Erotic Rites of Frankenstein
Written and directed by Jesús Franco
Spain/France, 1972
Since May of this year, I have embarked on an ongoing exploration into the cinema of Jesús Franco. After first viewing Justine (also known as Deadly Sanctuary), one of seven Franco films released in 1969 (his filmography boasts 203 directorial credits from 1957 to 2013), I sought out more of what this infamous Spanish auteur had to offer. Like Justine, some of these films have been extraordinarily entertaining: The Diabolical Dr. Z (1966), Vampyros Lesbos (1971), A Virgin Among the Living Dead (1973), Female Vampire and Women Behind Bars (both 1975), and Bloody Moon (1981). Others, however, have been downright atrocious: Emmanuelle Exposed (1982) and Red Silk (1999), one of the worst films I have ever seen.
The latest addition to what is now a 25-films-and-counting “Summer of Jesús Franco” is The Erotic Rites of Frankenstein, available on a new Blu-ray edition from Redemption Films, which has released several other Franco titles.

Vampyros Lesbos screens midnights this Friday and Saturday (February 6th and 7th) at The Hi-Pointe Theater (1005 McCausland Ave., St. Louis, Mo 63117)
I can’t believe after all these years I’m finally getting to see a Jess Franco movie on the big screen. This weekend at The Hi-Pointe Theater, Andy at Destroy the Brain is offering up one the late Spanish director’s most noteworthy and beautiful films, Vampyros Lesbos, as part of the Late Night Grindhouse Midnight series.
I first discovered the captivating allure of Jess Franco as a child when his Count Dracula (1970) and Attack Of The Robots (1966) would constantly air on the creature feature syndicate. Even as a kid, I was captivated by Franco’s hypnotic, dreamy style and I can remember being puzzled by a narcotic quality I wasn’t used to. It was when VHS tapes were introduced in the early ‘80s that I really sought out his work.

Feburary’s Late Nite Grindhouse show was originally going to be Duke Mitchell’s Massacre Mafia Style. Unfortunately, there was a scheduling conflict with the only 35mm print of that film. Therefore, we have had to book another title. Massacre Mafia Style will show at a later date but I feel extremely lucky to bring you guys the restored version of Jess Franco’s Vampyros Lesbos. If that title sounds saucy, it’s because it is. Nudity, sex and blood will be shown on the big screen at the Hi-Pointe next weekend and you should join us!

She wants him to photograph her husband Carlos Rivas, a nightclub owner played by Erik Falk (Barbed Wire Dolls) who has an eye for the ladies. Good old Al accepts and begins his newest assignment. Unfortunately, things get a little complicated when Carlos is found dead. Al becomes the prime suspect and on his quest to clear his name, discovers that Cynthia isn’t actually the wife of Carlos. It turns out that she and her lover Lola played by Martine Stedil (Women Behind Bars) are working for Carlos’s real wife Olga, played by Monica Swinn...

Jess Franco has tackled many of the classic subgenres and stories especially during the mid-70’s while he always put his own unique sexually explicit, tongue dropping sense of seduction on each movie he makes, he seems to rely on classic tales and great stories of historical fiction with a hint of the fantastic. Never is this truer than in Jack the Ripper from 1976 featuring Klaus Kinski. Franco invents true evil in the form of a well meaning bad guy with a very dark side in his interpretation of this classic White Chapel bound tale. While nobody knows how Jack was for sure that only helps Franco to create his own dark world. It’s got prostitutes in various stages of murder, dismember and clothing as well as a few stragglers along the way who fall victims to homicides of necessity. Ascot Elite offers us the chance to enjoy Jack the Ripper...

Xan Cassavetes is from a long line of Hollywood elite. Her father, John Cassavetes, was a writer, director, and actor (he was the male lead in Rosemary’s Baby); her mother, Gena Rowlands, is a two-time Oscar nominee; her brother Nick is an actor and director. And while Xan has worked on many of her family’s projects, Kiss of the Damned marks her feature narrative directorial debut. Owing much to the Eurosleaze traditions of Jess Franco and Jean Rollin, Kiss of the Damned is the tale of demure French vampire Djuna; Paolo, the human who she is irresistibly attracted to; and Mimi, Djuna’s unpredictable sister who threatens to ruin it all.
We sat down with Xan to talk to her about Kiss of the Damned, her love of films, and why this isn’t really a “horror” movie.
Where did the idea for Kiss of the Damned come from?...

Although more recently it’s been turned into a sort of supernatural chastity belt protecting teenage girls from the hunky guys they love, vampirism always served as a deeply erotic foundation for horror stories. Movies capitalizing on this are too numerous to count, but from Jess Franco’s Vampyros Lesbos to Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula adaptation to, Xan Cassavetes’ Kiss of the Damned, the standouts among them have always infused the curse of becoming an immortal bloodsucker with a humanity and a romanticism that makes it resonate, even if it’s ultimately only in audiences’ loins.
Although it’s destined to draw comparisons to Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight saga, Cassavetes’ film is a significantly more mature – and sexy – take on vampire romance, approaching its subject with sophistication and sensuality even as it indulges in gore and terror that’s as metaphorical as it is visceral.

The late Jesús Franco was, we are told, once named by the Vatican as being, along with Luis Buñuel, "the most dangerous filmmaker in the world." There's little evidence of that in early spy caper Cartes sur table (Cards on the Table, a.k.a. Attack of the Robots, 1966), but there is, by pleasing coincidence, a Buñuel connection or two. Franco's co-writer on this and other early productions was none other than the great Jean-Claude Carrière, the collaborator's collaborator, who worked with Buñuel on all his later French movies (as well as ghosting Don Luis's autobiography My Last Breath). The movie also features regular Buñuel star Fernando Rey among its seamy rogue's gallery of villains.
The movie stars craggy Yank abroad Eddie Constantine as a former Interpol agent lured back for one last job, but betrayed by his bosses who see him as a pawn in the game. Although the movie is light,...

Prolific Spanish film-maker who specialised in psychedelic gothic horror – often laced with sex and violence
According to the Internet Movie Database, the Spanish film-maker Jesús Franco, who has died aged 82, directed 199 films, from El árbol de España in 1957 to Al Pereira vs the Alligator Ladies in 2012, a record few can match in the era of talking pictures. Given that many Franco films exist in three or four variant versions, sometimes so radically different that alternative cuts qualify as separate movies, his overall tally might be considerably higher.
Born Jesús Franco Manera, he was most often credited – at least on international release prints – as Jess Frank or Jess Franco, though he used a host of pseudonyms, writing scripts as David Khune, composing music as Pablo Villa and co-directing pornographic films (with his long-term muse Lina Romay) as Rosa Almirall. We recently paid tribute to the long and prolific career of one of the heavyweights in European horror, softcore and exploitation cinema, Jesus “Jess” Franco, who passed away Tuesday at the age of 82. While Franco was not as well known for directing giallo films in the traditional sense, I'd say his 1970 erotic thriller She Killed in Ecstasy qualifies as a near-entry in the genre, albeit loaded with all the quirks and fetishes that Franco loved to indulge in his films. It's also an excellent showcase for the talent and allure of star Soledad Miranda, a profoundly beautiful woman whose career got a boost from working with Franco on films like this one, plus the cult classic Vampyros Lesbos and Count Dracula with Christopher Lee – all filmed shortly before her untimely death in a car accident. Unlike most giallo stories, which generally have a mystery to solve, She Killed in Ecstasy...

Spanish film director Jess "Jesus" Franco has died at age 82 in Malaga, Spain. The prolific pioneer of Spanish horror and fantasy cult films capitalized on a relaxation of censorship laws to create a body of films that have withstood the test of time and still maintain loyal followings today. Among them: Succubus, Vampyros Lesbos, 99 Women, The Awful Dr. Orlof, Necronomicon and the 1969 Count Dracula starring Hammer film favorite Christopher Lee. He also served as second unit director on Orson Welles' Chimes at Midnight. A respected talent who specialized in exploitation films, Franco also occasionally acted, wrote screenplays and composed music for his own films as well as those of other artists. In all, Franco was involved in the production of over 200 films.

Jess Franco, who has died aged 82, was a dedicated exponent of weird sex who leaves a vast and complex body of work
When the grand dames and gentlemen at Spain's 2009 Goya Film Awards sat drinking their champagne, I doubt many of them expected to see, before the night was through, a naked man and woman tied up and whipped in a circle of knives, two scimitar-wielding lesbians duking it out on a hilltop, a sadomasochistic orgy in a brothel or a coven of elderly witches massaging their nipples with a crucifix. Such, though, was the explosion of licentiousness in a montage of images from the career of Spanish filmmaker Jesús Franco Manera, aka Jess Franco, who received that night a lifetime achievement award.

Spanish director dies following a stroke: Best known for his nearly two hundred underground, "exploitation" films "I think I was born because my father and my mother had sex ... ." Nope, that has nothing to do with the anti-censorship lectured delivered by Oz the Great and Powerful and Interior. Leather Bar's James Franco online. The words above were uttered by another Franco, a Spaniard. No, not the foaming-at-the-mouth right-wing military ruler Francisco Franco, but multitasking filmmaker Jesús Franco, aka Jess Franco aka dozens of other aliases, including those in honor of jazz performers Clifford Brown and James P. Johnson. His oeuvre included about 200 films, among them The White Slave, The Sexual History of O, Macumba Sexual, , Emmanuelle Exposed, Vampyros Lesbos, The Mistresses of Dr. Jekyll, and White Cannibal Queen. The director died today in Malaga, a city in southern Spain, after suffering a stroke. According to reports, he had never truly...

While very few details are available at the moment, international outlets are reporting that Spanish director Jess Franco passed away earlier today. According to El Pais, Franco’s death was due to a stroke and the announcement was made this morning by Kike Mesa, the director of a 2007 documentary on Jess Franco’s life.
Jesús Franco Manera, better known as “Jess” Franco, was born on May 12, 1930 in Madrid, Spain. He directed nearly 200 films over the years and is probably best known for his horror films in the 1960′s and 1970′s, including Count Dracula and The Bloody Judge with Christopher Lee, Vampyros Lesbos, The Awful Dr. Orloff, Oasis of the Zombies (in 1983), and many more.
Our thoughts are with Jess Franco’s friends and family. As mentioned above, this information is all coming from secondary sources, so we’ll be looking for an official statement from his family, and will update...

Sad news from Spain. Legendary director Jesús Franco Manera, aka Jess Franco, aka Clifford Brown and a couple dozen more pseudonyms, often took from the names of the American jazz musicians he so admired, has died at the age of 82. Franco suffered a stroke last week from which he couldn’t recover.

Euro-cult great Jess Franco has passed away at the age of 82 after producing nearly 200 films. A unique filmmaker, Franco’s work fits in a category all its own, combining art, the erotic, and the macabre into titles like Lorna the Exorcist, The Awful Dr. Orloff, Dracula vs Frankenstein, and of course, the eponymous Vampyros Lesbos.
While Franco isn’t to everyone’s taste, he certainly stretched the definition of horror cinema and elevated stunner Soledad Miranda to icon status. Get a crash course on Franco’s films here from FEARnet’s Alison Nastasi and watch a (Nsfw) clip from Vampyros Lesbos below.

Jesús "Jess" Franco - director of nearly 200 films, father of the 1960s Spanish horror boom and father of several generations of filmmakers - has died in Malaga of heart complications, at the age of 82.I don't think you could find a post-1970 horror filmmaker who doesn't know Franco's work or hasn't been influenced by him. From The Awful Dr. Orloff and Vampyros Lesbos to The Mansion of the Living Dead, his work was outrageous, bloody, sexy, gory, creepy, and crossed just about every line imaginable - some that even today's horror filmmakers wouldn't dare put a toe over. Making films in Spain in the 1960s wasn't easy. Censorship rules imposed by the fascist government meant that horror films were rare. But some changes to policy (made...

Some truly sad news out of Spain this morning as the horror genre mourns the passing of one of its most prolific filmmakers: Jess "Jesus" Franco.
As reported by El Pais, the word broke today, where Kike Mesa, director of the 2007 documentary Jess Franco: Way of Life, announced Franco's passing early this morning at the age of 82.
Franco's output was simply staggering, having helmed nearly 200 films ranging from shorts to features (and many uncredited works as well). He is perhaps most known for the 1971 erotic vampire opus Vampyros Lesbos (1971), which focused on a vampire's efforts to seduce a young office worker into the world of undead and erotic delights. More of Franco's most impressive works are The Awful Dr. Orloff (1962), The Blood of Fu Manchu (1968), Exorcism (1975), Bloody Moon (1981) and Faceless (1988).
Mr. Franco was never perhaps as well-regarded as he should've been among his peers. His films were often derided...

The Marquis de Sade was a French revolutionary politician, writer and philosopher who gifted the world with his libertine novels – Justine, Juliette and Philosophy in the Bedroom. He also produced the 120 Days of Sodom – a masterpiece of transgressive literature – a work that the Marquis spoke of wanting to present to the world – “the most impure tale that has ever been written since the world exists”.
Much speculation has centred on de Sade’s life – that he held orgies in which people were whipped, tortured and depraved. His name gave us the word ‘sadism’ which means cruelty and violence and it is particularly associated with sexual practices that are extreme in nature.
From almost the beginning of cinema, film makers have been applying their Sadean aesthetics onto the silver screen. We can see this in Luis Bunuel’s Un Chien Andalou (1929) with the infamous eye razor sequence – pure de Sade. De...

If your definition of psychedelic cinema goes further than Peter Fonda saying "Far out", prepare to have your mind exploded. Psychedelia was always a better fit with Europe, where it found affinities with surrealism, horror and eroticism.
