Reviews were split down the middle: “Maleficent” was both magnificent and Grimm failure. The "Wicked"-style live-action reworking of the animated classic "Sleeping Beauty" that focuses on the vengeful fairy who places the curse on a young princess scored a so-so 51% positive ranking on Rotten Tomatoes. However, even some of the harshest critics couldn’t resist star Angelina Jolie’s chillingly seductive brand of visual hocus pocus -- jutting cheekbones, curvaceous horns, crimson-lacquered lips combined with the mesmerizing allure of a silent-movie siren -- as the human incarnation of the Disney cartoon icon. Peter Rainer of the “Christian Science Monitor” praised her as “a genuinely heroic presence,” despite being otherwise underwhelmed. Those who were kinder to the CGI-jammed fantasy were even more effusive. As Moira MacDonald of the “Seattle Times” observed, “There's really only one special effect in "Maleficent" worth mentioning, and that is Angelina...

Nearly every Disney animated film is adapted in some form or another from a classic tale. Frequently they will stay true to the source material, but in order to make family friendly movies from “grim” tales, sometimes big changes are in order. These can be beneficial to the film and story, or sometimes just to tag on a cheap happy ending despite the effect it has upon the overall story; often they are solely to allow the potential of a sequel. No matter what the cause, a change is made.
In some cases, it is just the endings that have changed. Take The Lion King, for example. It is an almost perfect recreation of Shakespeare’s classic Macbeth. The only change being that the characters are part of the animal kingdom as opposed to human beings – except for one slight detail. At the end of Macbeth, everyone dies.

A look at the pre-Grimm work of co-creators David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf, a screenwriting partnership that’s lasted over thirty years…
A poker table in the late seventies, a bathroom in the mid-noughties… television shows have many birthplaces. Had screenwriters David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf not been introduced at a card game over thirty years ago, and had producer Todd Milliner not taken a 2006 shower in which he pondered what existing stories were in need of a modern update for TV, then Grimm might never have existed.
First, that poker game. Greenwalt and Kouf’s friendship began a couple of years before their first official screenwriting credit on 1982’s horror spoof Wacko, a job for which the pair were paid the princely sum of fifteen thousand dollars…

Disney brought the legendary fairy tale Sleeping Beauty to life back in 1959, crafting an animated film that will live forever in cinema history. In just a few months from now, however, they will aim to do the same thing again with a live-action version of the same story. Robert Stromberg's Maleficent will be hitting theaters this May, and following up on the debut spot that premiered last November we now have a new official trailer, hosted over on YouTube. Based on a script by Paul Dini (Batman: The Animated Series) and Linda Woolverton (The Lion King) with rewrites done by Saving Mr. Banks helmer John Lee Hancock, Maleficent is a retelling of the classic Brothers Grimm story from a new perspective. Set in an ancient kingdom, the story follows the eponymous witch, played by Angelina Jolie, as she makes her decent into villainy and curses the beautiful Princess Aurora...

The Wind Rises
In The Wind Rises, Jiro (voice of Joseph Gordon-Levitt) dreams of flying and designing beautiful airplanes, inspired by the famous Italian aeronautical designer Caproni (voice of Stanley Tucci). Nearsighted from a young age and unable to be a pilot, Jiro joins a major Japanese engineering company in 1927 and becomes one of the world’s most innovative and accomplished airplane designers. The film chronicles much of his life, depicting key historical events, including the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, the Great Depression,...

A 'lil Bippity Boppity Boo action and Disney has finally found its picture perfect "Cinderella."
The studio announced today that it has selected the fair "Downton Abbey" maiden Lily James to lead the live-action adaptation of its own 1950 classic cartoon, making her the second principle castmember to be announced for the rags-to-royalty reboot so far.
She joins Cate Blanchett — who'll handle the wicked stepmother part — on the roll call for Sir Kenneth Branagh's directorial effort, with more additions expected in the coming weeks.
"Harry Potter" starlet Emma Watson was originally rumored for the role but reportedly turned down the opportunity to slip into the character's iconic glass shoe. To be fair, she might just be tired of wielding a broom. (See what we did there?)

It’s a tale as old as time: A revisionist fairy tale blows up at the box office (this time, it’s Oz the Great and Powerful, which made over $80 million this past weekend), and suddenly all the studios want in on creating the next big live-action “fairy tale.” (In this case, “fairy tale” means any popular children’s story).

Blancanieves
Directed by Pablo Berger
Written by Pablo Berger
2012, Spain
The German tale of Snow White was published by Grimm brothers Jacob and Wilhelm in their Hausmärchen collection in 1812. Considered to be the most famous fairy tale worldwide, Snow White has been adapted to the big screen numerous times by the likes of Walt Disney, Michael Cohn and most recently Tarsem Singh and Rupert Sanders. Every adaptation has featured, respectively, their own variation of the literary source material. Now Spanish filmmaker Pablo Berger has channeled all those energies, and through his own artistic sensibility, he artfully crafts a love letter to Hispanic culture and it’s history. Blancanieves is a beautifully executed vision of the Grimm fairy tale; with the key elements of Snow White all present and accounted for (the poisoned apple, the glass coffin, and the seven dwarfs). Only Berger takes it a step further, adding nods to Sleeping Beauty,...

Here’s part two of the best female centric comics to have been released over the last two years. If you missed the first five picks in part one, check them out here.
Fairest (2012, Vertigo)
Bill Willingham’s “Fables” has become sort of a giant in the comics world. It now runs over 125 issues and is ongoing, it had a 50-issue spin-off “Jack of Fables”, and several limited series titles. Its influence on pop culture can even be seen in film (Mirror Mirror, Snow White and the Huntsman) and television (Once Upon A Time, Grimm). While it can be intimidating getting into this series today because of its length and scope, it is worth noting that the new spin-off “Fairest” is accessible and inviting to new readers who want to get their first taste of this universe. Existing fans will appreciate the comic’s relations to the main series, but...

And here’s one more entry in the updated, more adult-oriented fairy tale sweepstakes from Hollywood. There was the disastrous Red Riding Hood with Amanda Seyfried from two years ago (trying to grab the Twilight fans) and last year two, count-em’ two, live action Snow Whites! The campy Mirror, Mirror with Julia Roberts as the wicked stepmother was a huge dud while Snow White And The Huntsman with Kristen Stewart as the titular sword-wielding heroine was a surprise smash (and was gossip fodder for months). There’s still more to come with Angelina Jolie’s turn as Sleeping Beauty’s evil sorceress Malificent due next year. But out at the multiplex right now is a twisted take on another Grimm Brothers classic Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters. Like Huntsman this version takes aim at the fantasy action crowd (since the first Hobbit’s been out for several weeks now...

Hollywood's fixation with fairy tales is in full flow. We have Grimm and Once Upon A Time on television, two Snow White adaptations already released, Jack The Giant Killer set for 2013 and the Sleeping Beauty retelling Maleficent arriving the year after that.
Next up is Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters - and the first trailer has landed. Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker, Avengers, The Bourne Legacy) and Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace, Clash of the Titans, Prince of Persia) star in the title roles.
While many of us will recall this old German folk tale about two children trapped in a gingerbread house who escape being eaten by a witch, director Tommy Wirkola's film moves the story on considerably.
The brother and sister, now grown up, are bounty hunters who exterminate witches and are hired to get rid of an evil sorceress called Muriel (played by Famke Janssen, known...

EW reports that Brit Julian Morris (above) of Pretty Little Liars (he’s not one of the liars I don’t think) will play Prince Phillip, or the man looking to wake up Sleeping Beauty. His character is described thusly: “…as a man who’s traveled from a kingdom that’s in decline. Teen Wolf’s Sinqua Walls (below) has been cast as Sir Lancelot and has been booked for one episode, according to THR. He “will be introduced as a one-time member of King Arthur’s Round Table who has been expelled.

Sarah Bolger isn’t changing titles, and from the looks of it, I really should go back and watch The Tudors. The beautiful princess looking for love, the evil stepmother thwarting her every move, the handsome prince who comes to her rescue -- all are classic fairy tale characters that have come to life on the big screen, ever since the invention of movies.
"Snow White and the Huntsman" is just the latest cinematic re-telling of a classic fairy tale, following closely on the heels of the similarly Snow White-centric "Mirror Mirror." These types of films may be experiencing a renaissance, as there are many more movies based on fairy tales in the pipeline, with top talent attached. The world of television and movies is captivated at the moment with a return to fairy tales and I personally couldn't be happier. With the emergence and success of Once Upon A Time and Grimm on television and Mirror Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman in theaters, it makes perfect sense that Disney, the entertainment home of fairy tales, is currently working on Maleficent, the tale of Sleeping Beauty told from the perspective of "the princess' evil nemesis, Maleficent."

Right now, it's still unclear if the fairy tale movie is really going to end up being a potent force. While "Once Upon A Time" and "Grimm" have found fans on the small screen, in the cinema, "Alice in Wonderland" aside (and that's a film that's only really a fairy tale by the loosest definition of the word), none of the live-action reboots of classic folklore material, from "Red Riding Hood" to "Mirror Mirror," have gotten much traction with audiences. That could (and we suspect will) change in a couple of weeks when "Snow White And The Huntsman" opens, but the uncertainty hasn't stopped studios moving forward with a myriad of fairy tale projects: everything from "Beauty & The Beast" to "Cinderella" is in various stages of development.
And two projects that are close to happening look like they might have found some young British talent to add to their casts: Firstly,...

After seven months of twisty plotting, sly Lost references, and much-improved CGI sets, the first chapter of Once Upon a Time ends tonight. Before the finale, EW interviewed both the charming Josh Dallas and the show’s executive producers — and according to their teases, we’re in for a giant game-changer that will forever alter lives in both Storybrooke and Fairy Land.
But even though I’m itching to know whether Emma will finally start believing in the curse and how the dearly departed Sheriff Skinnyjeans will factor into tonight’s episode, I’d like to table those questions and look even further ahead.

Move over vampires and zombies, the age of the live-action fairytale has taken over as Hollywood's latest obsession. Two live action Snow White movies are set to to arrive this year — Universal Studios' Snow White and the Huntsman and Relativity Media's Mirror, Mirror. Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters is set to spoof the Brothers Grimm tale early next year after being delayed from March until January 2013. Now Disney, which started the trend with 2010's blockbuster Alice in Wonderland, is developing a life-action version of Sleeping Beauty titled Maleficent and yet another riff on Snow White.

Exclusive: If Joe Roth were any more closely associated with fairy tales, he’d be one of the Grimm Brothers. Roth, who help start Hollywood’s feverish devotion to fairy tale films by producing the $1 billion-grossing Alice in Wonderland, is negotiating to become producer of Maleficent, Disney’s re-telling of its 1959 classic Sleeping Beauty, this time told from the vantage point of the evil witch. It’s no secret that Angelina Jolie wants to play that character. The script was written by Linda Woolverton, who scripted Alice in Wonderland as well as Disney’s recently re-released The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast. They are looking for a director after a preliminary courtship of Alice helmer Tim Burton didn’t work out. Aside from Alice in Wonderland, Roth is producing Disney’s Sam Raimi-directed Disney pic Oz: The Great and Powerful with James Franco, Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz,...

A little girl who dreams of being a boy. A boy who wishes to be seduced by an Ice Queen. High fantasy and tangled sexuality dovetail in “The Sleeping Beauty,” a fantastical retelling of the popular folklore involving the little girl brought to an eternal slumber. Like the original Brothers Grimm fairytale, this version differs sharply from the public’s greater awareness of the Disney-fied version. But where it takes the familiar-seeming tale differs greatly from the source, as it emerges from the fertile mind of French provacateur Catherine Breillat. Breillat began her career as an abrasive provocateur, emerging as a…...

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, producer Joe Roth said he plans to turn Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman, starring Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, and Charlize Theron, into a series. “It’s meant to be the first in a series of films,” Roth said. “This story will end, but there will be questions remaining for these three characters.”
Update: Fellow producer Palak Patel clarified it’s not necessarily a trilogy on Twitter, “Never said ‘trilogy’ said ’series of films.’ Focusing on first film now.” (via @KStewAngel)
Here are four reasons why a Snow White series is a terrible idea:
Sigh, More Franchises
Sadly, in a record-breaking year of sequels, we’re getting wind of yet another franchise in the making: the umpteenth adaptation of Snow White stretched into multiple tales.

For over a century, it has been one of the world's most burning questions: If Abraham Lincoln fought his own clone, who would win?
Okay, so maybe we're overstating the importance of the question, but that isn't going to stop Hollywood from answering it. And next year's showdown between "Lincoln" and "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" is just one example of the many projects in the movie pipeline that are fighting with their own clones. Everyone from Snow White to Osama Bin Laden is racing to get to the theater before their evil twin gets there first.
So with that in mind, we thought we'd take a look at some of the films that may soon have you seeing double. Because in Hollywood, if an idea is good enough to film, it's good enough to copy.

Lately it's been like the Brothers Grimm were dug up out of their graves, reanimated, and sent to work in the development arm of every major studio. Everywhere you look it's nothing but fairy tales. Multiple versions of Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Hansel and Gretel...it's just ridiculous. So leave it to Pixar to buck the trend by fashioning their own original story, starring their first female...

See, we actually really like the idea of a Tim Burton version of Sleeping Beauty. It seems like a better story for his dark, cartoon-y style than, say, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, which may or may not have caused us to have a hallucinatory panic attack in the candy aisle at Rite Aid. Sadly, Tim Burton’s Maleficient is a no go, despite the inclusion of Angelina Jolie as the titular evil queen and the fact that it’s the creepiest of the Disney princess story in need of a live-action remake (blood on a spinning wheel? enchanted comas? It’s like the Brothers Grimm wrote it for him). Seeing as how Hailee Steinfeld’s Sleeping Beauty is also on the way, Disney will hopefully find another director soon. You know, even those animals dancing around in the prince’s clothes in the animated Sleeping Beauty was Burton-esque. Birds...

The Snow White movie battle is getting dirty. Snow White and the Huntsman, originally set for a December 2012 release, has leapfrogged The Brothers Grimm: Snow White in targeting June 1, 2012 for its release. This means both rival Snow White movies are scheduled to debut in June 2012, with Grimm having previously set a June 29 release. It also means Judd Apatow's This is Forty, which was supposed to come out June 1, will be pushed back to December 2012 as Universal has swapped their two projects. History has shown that in the cinematic battle of pairs, the first film to enter the ring usually has the upper hand.
In related news, Deadline has confirmed the casting of Chris Hemsworth (Thor) as the titular Huntsman in Snow White and the Huntsman.

Deadline's Mike Fleming reports that even though Geoffrey Rush isn't on the cast list, he'll be contributing voice work for the character of Tomar-Re (pictured), the scientist who works alongside the title character in Green Lantern. Fleming also hears Michael Clarke Duncan is a contender for the voice of the character Kilowog, but a final decision hasn't yet been made. I didn't realize the film would have so many CGI characters, but this does little to restore my faith after that dismal first trailer.
According to THR, John Travolta has signed on to play mobster John Gotti Sr. in Gotti: Three Generations. The film will focus on the relationship between John Gotti Sr. and John Gotti Jr., who took over the family business for his father. The younger Gotti served time in prison before successfully escaping conviction in four subsequent racketeering trials. Nick Cassavetes (The Notebook, Alpha Dog) will direct.

Enjoying all the fairy tale movies due to come out? I hope so because here comes another one: a spec script for a Sleeping Beauty feature has been making its rounds in H-town with True Grit standout Hailee Steinfeld, 14, interested in playing the drowsy princess.
The Sleeping Beauty project is untitled, but Deadline reports that Lindsay Devlin has penned a “revisionist take” on the story. In the tale, Steinfeld enters a dream world during her evil witch induced nap and tries to find a way out. Will the prince wake her up? Will she wake herself up in some quasi Girl Power! moment?
Disney is busy working on their own Sleeping Beauty project entitled Maleficent. The tale is expected to be from the view of the witch. Written by Linda Woolverton with Tim Burton rumored to either direct or produce, the Mouse House (and me) has been reportedly after hot...

Going from one of the toughest teen characters on screen in the Coen Brothers’ True Grit to one of the most comatose Princesses in fairy tale literature, Hailee Steinfeld is attached to star in a new take on Sleeping Beauty according to reports.
A spec script for the project written by Lindsay Devlin is currently doing the rounds in Hollywood, and takes a unique look at the classic story in which the Princess is cursed to eternal sleep by a wicked witch. While the Princess in Devlin’s take spends most of the film unconscious, it is her that we focus on throughout, with the film telling the story from her point of view as she traverses through the dream world that she has been doomed to occupy, trying to find her way out.

Hailee Steinfeld of True Grit is attached to Sleeping Beauty scripted by Lindsay Devlin, which, according to deadline, is a spec package going out to buyers now. Devlin has written a revisionist take on the fairy tale where Steinfeld is apparently given a lot more to do than sleep while awaiting the kissing rescue of prince charming, awakening her from the witch's curse. In this version, we see the story from Sleeping Beauty's point of view as she enters into a dream world, and has to find an exit. Other fairy tale flicks are coming out in full force. This includes Snow White and the Hunstman at Universal which Viggo Mortensen recently ankled, and includes Twilight star Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron. As Tk reported this morning, there has been a recent glut of hot Hollywood females cast as Evil Witches and Witch Queens. To recap, there's Charlize Theron in Snow White and The Huntsman, Famke Janssen in Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters (Tk said unknown role, but everything I've read lists her as the Head Witch) and Julia Roberts in Brothers Grimm: Snow White. (Are you sneering because I just lumped Julia "Horse Laugh" Roberts with those other gorgeous ladies? Listen, Roberts may not be your idea of beauty, but I know plenty of people who wouldn't kick her out of the ashram.)
The Evil Queen in any "Snow White" adaptation must, by definition, be beautiful. She is, of course, The Former Most Beautiful Champ Of Them All. She is, also, at least implicitly, a witch, given her deft hand with potions and magical talking mirror. She's a Glamour Witch.

If there's anything good to say about Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland and its billion dollar gross, it's that it might make Hollywood a safer place for female-driven magical tales. Disney's Tangled and its $449 million gross (and rising) enthusiastically seconds the notion that fairy tales and old timey stories aren't passe. Fairy tales are a good well to draw from: they're familiar and thus as easy to market as any hit franchise and yet they're flexible and thus of interest to artists who can bring fresh takes to old stories.

The new Snow White is Kristen Stewart! KStew said yes to Universal to play the princess in Snow White and the Huntsman. Stewart is into the role, her reps are just negotiating the money side of the deal which most of the time means it's happening. She'll star opposite Viggo Mortensen in the role of the Huntsman and Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen.
Universal initially wanted an unknown actress but it would appear they went an entirely different direction since Stewart is possibly The most famous actress of her generation. Stewart won the role over Emily Browning (who just wrapped the Australian pic Sleeping Beauty), Elvis Presley's granddaughter Riley Keough (The Runaways), Australian Bella Heathcote, Swede Alicia Vikander and Brit Felicity Jones (The Tempest).

Tangled Directed by: Nathan Greno and Byron Howard Written by: Dan Fogelman (screenplay), Grimm Brothers (fairy tale) Starring: Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, Donna Murphy, Ron Pearlman This is what you get for not seeing The Princess and the Frog. Disney eschewed its revitalization of traditional animation for this forgettable CG adaptation of Rapunzel, which goes by the nondescript nom de plume: Tangled. If the recent announcement that the animation giant is placing a moratorium on fairy tale films should come as a surprise to anyone, their position on the matter is telegraphed plainly into the first five minutes of their latest and last: modern audiences won’t sit for straight-faced fantasy. The name-change alone underscores the corporation’s feelings on the commercial viability of a tradition it once held proud. That willful dissolution of magic is a slap in the face to Snow White or Sleeping Beauty. Tangled begins with striking imagery,...

Where it ranks in the lexicon of Disney films is not the point of this Tangled review. Tangled stands on its own and in many ways that is its greatest strength. The casting team at Disney has struck gold with Mandy Moore playing Rapunzel and Zachary Levi portraying the dashing, debonair and decidedly criminal Flynn. Not your usual set-up for a Disney film romance, no?
That is why Tangled is a triumph in telling the story of the girl with 70 feet of magical hair who holds the proverbial key to her own freedom.
Tangled, the new holiday movie from Disney, is crammed full of the latest cartoon musts, including computer animation and, of course, eye-popping 3-D.
Yet it also seems sweetly, blissfully old-fashioned.
Yes, it’s based on a fairy tale —
the story of Rapunzel, actually. But unlike the “Shrek” series (and imitators, like “Hoodwinked”), it’s not built for pop-culture gags and adult irony.

I'm a reader of movie novelizations. People know this about me, and often ask me formy take on them. No 2010 release has been as eagerly awaited as Disney's Tangled, so it has been unsurprising to me these past few weeks that practically every other person I've passed on the street has wanted to know what I thought of its novelization. Until now, I have had to shrug my shoulders at those who have asked and tell them I had yet to read it.
I admit with some degree of shame that I only recently finished the book. It's a dense text, unlike the un-handsome junior novelization making the rounds, and at times I found myself adrift in the sea of adapter Ben Smiley's delicate diction and sophisticated syntax. The edition I read is as fine an example of Random House's prestigious Little Golden Book imprint as I've encountered, and its...

This latest version reportedly has the Huntsman (who is sent into the forest to kill the teen but then traditionally lets her escape) chained to Snow White and they Both have to escape. Subsequently, the Huntsman becomes a protective mentor and father figure to Snow.

Natalie Portman is reportedly “interested” in starring in Brothers Grimm: Snow White, an “edgy” retelling of the fairy tale that Brett Ratner is producing.
Pajiba has the scoop, but is clear to point out that Portman hasn’t signed and the project does not have a greenlight. That’s mostly because there’s no director on board yet, but the site also adds French filmmaker Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amelie, Micmacs) is considering the job.
Jeunet’s unique visual and storytelling style changes this concept significantly. What was once merely fodder for Ratner’s numerous critics suddenly becomes an intriguing possibility with either him or Portman on board.
This should also be taken with a healthy helping of salt because Portman is coming off rave reviews for Black Swan with strong potential for an awards run in the coming months. An Oscar nomination could effect her choices, even with just the...

I wonder how they keep they're membership around 6,000 given how many people they invite annual. Maybe enough people reject the offer, stop paying their dues, or pass from this mortal coil each year to balance it out?
You can read the full list of recipients at Indiewire, but as is the Film Experience tradition, we like to pinpoint the newest (potential) members whose future ballots we'd most like to see. So let's have at it.
