unique and strange
ethylester6 February 2004
This film might stay with you a little longer than most horror movies from the 70's. It's about an ex-Vietnam soldier who doesn't care about the outside world anymore. He finds himself in the woods and near death. He is awoken by a very beautiful pond goddess (?) who cannot love him unless he gets rid of his soul. Of course he wishes to be with her and will do anything to get rid of his soul. He asks the loner woods guy what he should do. He, just like everyone else, warns him to stay away from this woman (Yyalah). But he won't give up. He even asks the local priest how to get rid of his soul (in a slightly comical way, I might add). He decides to go to an evil witch who annually sacrifices a child so that "the village" will have good crops.

Well, I won't spoil it for you, but as you can see, it deals with the supernatural and goddess/witch love. As people have mentioned on here, there is tons of pointless nudity that includes naked slave witches dancing around and worshiping the main witch.

The movie is slightly magical and doesn't seem to be as raunchy as it sounds. There's even nature frolicking scenes and happy music. The actor who plays David must be a bit of a nerd in real life because it shows in the way he acts. He punches in the air with joy when something goes right, or he uses big giant facial expressions as if he were in a play. His acting makes the movie seem a little weird. Yyalah is also quite beautiful, even though she wears a horrible wig the entire time.

I give this a 4/10 because the movie has something about that makes you like it and you can't put your finger on why.

This movie is weird.
cerney13 April 1999
I thought this movie was weird. First of all it's mainly about naked witches killing people. Well I like that stuff though, also besides tons of nudity it has some gore but not much. The acting is bad but the nudity in this film makes me forget the acting. If you like Witchcraft/nudity/bad acting rent this movie.

What Alotta rubbish!
BA_Harrison18 November 2008
A trippy, hippy horror from the 70s, this weird tale of witches and water nymphs features tons of full frontal nudity, a surreal atmosphere, a groovy soundtrack, and just a little graphic gore, giving it (in my opinion) a distinctly European vibe despite being made in the San Fernando Valley, California. And, like a lot of experimental, psychedelic Euro horror from the 70s, it proves to be rather incoherent, and very tedious.

Anthony Geary plays David, a young Vietnam veteran who falls in love with Yyalah (Susan Damante-Shaw), a mysterious, supernatural blonde woman who cannot love him back because he has a soul. In order to be with the woman of his dreams, David arranges for Alotta (busty Dyanne Thorne of Ilsa fame), the queen of a coven of witches that plagues a nearby village, to relieve him of his soul...

Despite featuring lots of babes with massive minges (as was the fashion at the time) cavorting together in the buff, plus the impressive sight of the legendary Ms. Thorne jiggling her huge cans and shaking her tush, Blood Sabbath is ultimately an unmemorable piece of trash that is unlikely to appeal to even the most desperate of perverts (even if birds with big bushes happen to be your particular thing!). The meandering storyline is extremely dull, and with only one instance of graphic violence (a manky severed head held aloft by Alotta), fans of exploitation and low-budget horror would be advised to approach with caution.

"Take my soul, damn you!"
lazarillo26 November 2004
The wimpiest and whiniest Vietnam vet in cinema history (played by "Luke" from "General Hospital")falls asleep in the forest for some reason and when he wakes up he finds himself being assaulted by five beautiful, naked women, so he does what any guy would do--he runs away screaming. Later he falls in love with a fully-clothed water nymph (don't ask), but can't be with her unless he gives up his soul (really, don't ask). Fortunately, the head of the coven of naked women, played by Dyanne "Ilsa" Thorne, is willing to take his soul off his hands, especially after he becomes very insistent ("Take my soul, damn you!"). But then he drinks sacrificial blood which is a problem for some reason and his water nymph lover is horrified ("You're covered with blood. . . sacrificial blood"!). Then the movie just starts to get weird.

Obviously, the only reason to watch this movie is to see a lot of naked women, including the top-heavy Dyanne Thorne dancing around in nothing but a skimpy black bikini bottom. "Luke" has a brief nude scene too (one for the ladies, I guess). It's also pretty unintentionally funny. Besides the looney situations and idiotic dialogue, the movie is chock-full of other absurdities. You would think from the sylvan location of the story and the water nymphs, satanic coven, etc. that this would be set in the British Isles or somewhere in the Old World, but it is supposedly set in Mexico! It doesn't look anything like Mexico and no one maintains a consistent Mexican accent (let alone speaks Spanish), but the coven does decapitate a "padre" at one point. That's the only scene that might recommend this to horror movie fans, but you see one priest decapitated by a satanic cult, you seen 'em all. Then there's the "Vietnam" flashback footage, but the less said about that the better.

70's exploitation really doesn't get sleazier than this!
Coventry23 August 2005
Wow…what a piece of trash this movie was! Weird, amateurish and totally incoherent from start to finish, "Blood Sabbath" is not much more than an excuse to show naked chicks dancing around a sacrificial altar, led by the supreme D-cup witch Dyanne Thorne. Not one sequence in the entire movie makes the slightest bit of sense and everything looks so poor it almost becomes pitiful. The film introduces a former Vietnam soldier who's hiking through the woods and, all of a sudden, he's assaulted by a troop of exhibitionist hippie-girls that want to rape him (the poor, POOR guy!!). He flees and wakes up by the side of a river where yet another gorgeous girl awaits him. This time, the passion is mutual but apparently this girl is sort of like "owned" by the local witch coven and, in order to be with her, the dude has to donate his soul to witch-queen Alotta. "Black Sabbath" remains remotely intriguing up until the ceremony where our 'hero' loses his soul… After that, it totally turns into an incomprehensibly psychedelic mess with pointless story-twists and laughable red herrings. The main character constantly suffers from Vietnam-flashbacks but they're completely irrelevant to the story and Alotta enjoys decapitating priests and performs erotic dances in front of the rubber head that doesn't even look like the guy! This sure may looks like a must-see exploitation gem but in reality it's an unendurable and boring movie. The view of the witches dancing naked is not even sexy, since they all have more pubic hair than King Kong! Avoid!

Curiosity kept me there, Luke'in out was not an option.
mark.waltz16 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
There's only moderate curiosity in the appearance of the future daytime legend Anthony Geary in this grind house thriller about one of America's lost youth roaming through the Mexican countryside to find himself among a lady of the lake and a coven of cackling witches. It's often odd and creepy, filled with nude women out to protect their queen while searching for victims. Geary seems uninterested in the naked women who try to constantly try to molest him, yet is entranced by the water dwelling blonde who seems to be after Geary's soul. The nonsense attempt at a plot is no Kore an excuse for a lot of t and a, yet the best performances come from those who leave their clothes on, not perform the dance of the evil dead. As for Geary, coming off of the soap "Bright Promise" wasn't the start of a promising career, and the addition of credits like this must have lead him to return to soaps for that steady paycheck. Most of the other performances really aren't worth discussing, because what they are doing isn't what I'd call acting.

BORING Soft-Core Nudity
Rainey-Dawn15 January 2016
If you want to watch a non-scary boring horror film full of bad acting, a terrible story and lots of women pretending to be witches while fully naked throughout the film then you might like this one because that is what it is.

This is a one star film (if that) but I am giving it a second star for one reason: Anthony Geary. It's neat to see a film he was in before he became a big star as Luke Spencer on General Hospital. His acting got better over the years - he did some acting before this movie and is the best actor in it.

This is a film that fans of bad b-horror can easily pass up. But if you want a post-psychedelic film, lots of fully naked women with a bad story and acting then you might want to find a copy of this to see - if not then pass this film by.

Boring & slow but has plenty of female buff to warrant a viewing.
DigitalRevenantX77 October 2014
A Vietnam veteran is trekking through the Mexican countryside when he comes across & is embroiled in an old war between a coven of witches & Yyala, a water nymph. Falling in love with Yyala, the vet finds that in order to love her, he must first lose his soul. He decides to make a pact with the witches in order to lose it, but doesn't realise that life without a soul has its challenges.

Blood Sabbath is an obscure horror fantasy that has recently popped up on dirt-cheap DVD releases & is memorable for having General Hospital's Tony Geary as the 'hero' & plenty of nudity on hand.

For a horror film, Blood Sabbath is nowhere even near scary. As a fantasy film it fails to entice anybody into watching it, as far as story is concerned. But what makes the film almost worth watching is that there is plenty of female nudity featured, which will be the perfect decider to pigeonhole the audience – you're either the kind who can sit through a boring 1970s trashfest just to see the nudity (which the film has in spades) or you aren't. I'm one of the former type – I have a great patience when it comes to these things & enjoyed watching the witches parade around in their birthday suits (although the clarity wasn't anywhere above average since the DVD print from dirt-cheap budget label Payless Entertainment (one of Region 4's biggest budget labels) was lacking in quality).

But despite the nudity, there is almost nothing to recommend the film for. The special effects, when they do appear, are so poor that you end up groaning in disappointment – particularly the severed head that appears halfway through the film (it looks nothing like the character whose head it's supposed to be) & the story is clichéd & stupid.

On the acting front, Tony Geary makes a whiny hero. On the other hand, Dyanne Thorne – Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS herself – makes a favourable impression as the lead witch, clearly having fun with the cruelty of her role.

we loose interest, even in the nakedness
christopher-underwood11 January 2007
This starts off OK and with so much hippy flesh on screen seems nothing can go wrong. Even when the water nymph in the flowing white dress emerging from the lake to seduce him before vanishing are fairly promising. And there are other elements to intrigue and titillate. Not least a nude Dyanne Thorne looking much more attractive than in her Ilsa films plus all the blood sacrifice and naked dancing but it all begins to pall. To make our dopey hero who falls for the nymph but has to lose his soul to qualify for her hand, a Vietnam vet is madness. So by around half way so many half working and distinctly not working story lines have been introduced that we loose interest, even in the nakedness.

Engaging Post Psychedelic Twaddle
Steve_Nyland23 October 2004
Warning: Spoilers
This is actually a fascinating relic of a number of influences circa 1972 that just happens to take the form of an "Erotic Witchcraft" thriller, which is a horror subgenre that seems to have thrived between 1969 and 1980 or so before falling out of favor. Tony Geary plays a war scarred Vietnam vet who stumbles upon a coven of witches who have staked a claim on the slopes of a mountain beside a state park reservoir in Southern California. If that sounds like stretching things, their high priestess is Dyanne Thorne [of ILSA infamy and a 48" bustline] who is named "Alotta". Far out. There is also a kindly water nymph inhabiting the lake who has taken the form of a half naked & soaking wet Susan Damante, and you could do worse.

The film purports to be about Thorne's efforts to basically corrupt and ruin the existences of everyone she comes in contact with, and the impromptu romance struck up between the young combat vet and his water nymph just will not do. Child sacrifices, a beheaded Padre and lots of naked witchcraft ceremonies ensue, and the film ends on an oddly nihilistic downbeat as our hero is run down by giggling hippies in their Microbus & gets to live happily ever after in the lake with Susan Damante. And again, you could do worse.

But what this movie is really about, I think, is the Drive-In subculture that it was obviously aimed at. It has a grade Z production budget, a mostly amateur cast, and looks like it was a hell of a lot of fun to make. The plot is also more a series of reference points upon which director Biranne Murphy [sadly passed away in 2003, I note] hangs a series of set pieces that consist of nude women with fantastic bods all swaying and grooving to the movie's dynamite, psychedelic soundtrack by the great Les Baxter, using the name "Bax" to sound like less of a square. The music is actually the film's finest quality and could in itself account for much of BLOOD SABBATH's cult following to this day. It's a fabulous music score that seems to have been composed right on the spot out there in whatever state park they filmed most of it in, complete with an obligatory theme song/ballad that plays as Geary walks across the sunny landscape carrying a folk guitar. And the one film it reminds me of more than any other is Joseph Sarno's 1973 masterpiece VEIL OF BLOOD VAMPIRE ECTSASY], which is basically 90m of nonstop naked lesbian witches dancing to psychedelic bongo drum music.

Perhaps BLOOD SABBATH was an influence.

The entire film plays out like a trip of sorts, and isn't so much "horrifying" as it is a series of moods and color schemes, with the swaying bodies of the film's delightful witches as the focal point.

The rest of it is just there to give those who aren't hip enough something to concentrate on between necking sessions or passing around whatever was on hand to pass around. It doesn't seem like a film that wants to make a huge impression upon it's viewers as much as deliver a series of sights and sounds that would keep it's viewers occupied for 80 odd minutes, and on that level of consideration it's something of a success. Even after two or three viewings I could not remember how the movie ended, which is telling of how challenging the script is.

Yet this is actually kind of a daring production for 1972 in many ways: We not only hear it's male lead talk about being in Vietnam but are actually shown images of him in battle -- To heck with the fact that they look like they were filmed in the underbrush at a rest stop on the highway during their drive back to Los Angeles, name another film other than BILLY JACK perhaps that actually tried to paint a sympathetic image of our soldiers in Vietnam while portraying them in battle. The film also has a decidedly multi-ethnic cast, and while the idea of naked sex witches of color dancing alongside of caucasian witches may not be everyone's ideal of integration, in this case it will have to do.

BLOOD SABBATH is currently Out of Print and unavailable as a new retail release to US & Canadian audiences. There is a British codefree PAL DVD release featuring an 82m version that is available though the quality of the picture is not up to current day standards and was probably made from a VHS or otherwise analogue source. All of the known home video releases are also fullframe presentations, though due to it's low budget and drive in origins it is very likely that it may have been filmed as a 4x3 presentation anyway. The preferred version of BLOOD SABBATH is a 1984 VHS release by JLT Films that came in an over-sized slipcased box and has the film's entire 85m length with a surprisingly good picture quality & great color, though they are incredibly rare and considered a collector's item ... if you can find one.

I give it **1/2 out of **** for being a fascinating reminder of a time when going to the movies was supposed to be fun.

The film lost me right from the get go when the guy ran away from the girls
Aaron137530 June 2013
I have this film on a collection of 50 horror films; and while this film certainly has some elements of horror I would say it is more of a soft core porn flick. There is a lots of nudity in this one, and while they never really lingered on the actual sex scenes for too long, the scenes showing topless women did go on, so did the ones showing their butt cheeks and even their front areas. This is the one thing that kept this movie from being very boring and not worth a look; however, if you like 70's natural girls then this film has them in spades! To bad they could not have a decent story to go along with the girls and nudity, but I am thinking about the best story you could do here is just forget the soft and add a hard to it.

The story from what I can gather is a guy has recently returned from Vietnam and is just walking the countryside. He gets beer poured on him by hippies and later three naked hippie girls would literally try to have their way with him. He runs for it, making me scratch my head as he awoke to most guys wildest dreams. Two other naked girls even join the other three to chase him through the woods. Well he hurts himself and ends up waking up to find a beautiful water nymph who he promptly falls in love with. So no to three to five hot chicks, but yes to one water soaked vague girl. Yes, he is pretty dense, makes that guy from A Touch of Satan seem like he had a good head on his shoulders. Well, things happen, the guy makes a friend and soon learns of the horrible coven of witches. He also learns the only way to be with the water nymph is to get rid of his soul. So he ends up making a deal with an evil witch whom his friend says you cannot trust, yet the friend instantly believes her when she tells him some information that is obviously made up.

So yes, about the only thing worth watching is the nudity. The story is just to all over the place and the kills to few and far between for this one to be considered a horror film first. The girls for the most part are attractive, the the main witch has a nice body, but her face is not quite up to par. The main girl the guy falls in love with is pretty cute, but a couple of those hippies that were trying to have their way with our hero were cuter. The main witch also does not really know how to curse anyone as the person she put her final curse on ended up pretty much right where he wanted to be thanks to her curse. So copious amounts of nudity, not much of a story and someone should tell that guy that if he wants his soul gone all he has to do is hold his fist in the air and summon Gorgo of the thousand faced moon and he/she will be glad to take it and even give a little something in return.

What's it like today?
skipretty15 July 2007
I voted "excellent" because I have not seen the movie since 1972. I was involved with its production and, quite honestly, had no idea that there was a print out there, anywhere in the world. Thought for sure it had been lost and destroyed. lol I have ordered the film so that I can view it, and it will be fun trying to remember what was what. Tony Geary was an unknown at the time that this was made. Once he made it big on "General Hospital," he would have taken it all back. Again I am laughing because it is a part of my life that I find myself reviewing these days as I approach 71 years old as a little old grandmother. It will be fun to share this with my daughter who had not been born at the time. Bri was a lovely film photographer, a very nice lady, and did some directorial work. Her passing was mentioned a few years ago on the Oscar show. Took me back some. But then many of the people involved with that production have passed. Bill Bairn the producer is gone, Sam Gilman (usually associated as best friend of Marlon Brando's) is gone, Bri is gone, and god knows who else. It was an interesting experiment for everybody. There was an actors strike at the time and it was a bunch of pick up people who did it for fun on less than a shoestring. It was shot in 16mm and transferred to 35mm. Les Baxter took it on as a lark, but his music was hauntingly beautiful. Most of the film was shot on a ranch in the San Fernando Valley, and the Gower Street Studio's back lot. Can't wait to see it! P.S. I intend to go through my closet of slides to see if I still have the slides from the movie. I took hundreds. What fun this is going to be. If this is such a cult movie (?) maybne I can get some prints made and sell on e-bay. hahahahaha

Boob Sa-butt
Bezenby8 May 2013
Boob Sa-butt, more like! If you like nudity, naked girls, and women with no clothes on then this film is right up your street. Our hero, David, is a Vietnam vet wandering the land with a guitar and not much else when he's set upon by naked, annoying hippy girls and before you know it he's being rescued by a water nymph and falling in love. Trouble is, the water nymph can't totally fall in love with him until he loses his soul. Why? I've no idea, but luckily there's a coven of witches nearby who just happen to be on the lookout for a soul. Makes sense to whomever wrote the screenplay, I guess.

You've also got the local fisherman guy, and the local priest who is now having an attack of the guilt after filling his boots with naked witch acolytes for years. What price will David pay for the witches services? How will his water nymph missus react? Does anyone come out unscathed from making pacts with witches? And will Dyanne whatshername get out her knockers and boogie for the lads? The answer to that last one is indeed a 'yes' and it's enough to make a bald man cry, if you know what I mean.

Look, Blood Sabbath is a strange, strange film. It should be kind of boring, but the frequent nudity and all round surreal nature of thing keep you going. David's a Vietnam vet, and I get the feeling that all this film takes place in some kind of purgatory or something, which would explain the annoying hippy people and the flashbacks to him accidentally shooting children. Either that, or I've watched far too many weird films and something bust up there in my brain, there.

"Do you know how somebody would go about losing a soul?"
classicsoncall27 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Waylaid by four naked women in the middle of the woods, David (Anthony Geary) opts to get up and run away! Why??!! Only one of the many questions you'll have watching this flick that bypasses soft porn territory and goes straight for the gusto with full frontal nudity in scene after scene, to the point where you almost get tired of it after a while. David's a returned Vietnam vet who's occasional flashback episodes mirror what's happening on screen, but present day reality isn't anywhere near as traumatic. Or maybe it is, having to battle a Witch Queen named Alotta (Dyane Thorne) for the love of a water nymph who he can't be with unless he loses his soul. I will say that Susan Damante as the pond denizen Yyala was the main bright spot in the picture for this viewer, simply gorgeous in her white gown and long blonde hair. Beyond that though, it's an exercise in patience getting to the finale, which leaves a question mark of it's own when David stabs the Witch Queen who leaves no trace of blood. Don't even bother trying to figure it out.

Luke finds love in Witchboob Forest.
EyeAskance5 October 2003
Delirious mess of a witchcraft tale is watchable mainly as a showcase for the female bust. 'Nam vet drifter David(Anthony Geary, "Luke Spencer" of GENERAL HOSPITAL fame) is nettled by a group of reckless hippies who are having some sort of baby-oil orgy in the wilderness. By and by, he falls in love with a foxy water nymph named Yyalah, but she can't requite his affections "because he has a soul". The inimitable Dyanne Thorne(of the amazing ILSA films) turns up as a witch named Alotta (hmmmm...now there's a name you can have all sorts of fun with), who has plans of her own for David. This very druggie deep-woods tale of love, lust, and the supernatural culminates in a satisfactory bittersweet finale(and a closing credits crawl with that distinctly MARY-TYLER-MOORE lettering font), but getting that far along is a challenge and a chore.

An occasionally interesting, but mostly tiresome affair from the post-psychedelic burnout years(a place in time which I personally refer to as "the rattan zone"). If you're not a dedicated completest of 70s horror trash, you might opt to give this one a wide berth. I'm pretty sure it's inspired by, or very loosely based on Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué's 19th century romantic fantasy novella UNDINE.

See it, if you must, for the nude scenes.
soulexpress29 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
A young Tony Geary stars as David, the whiniest, most milquetoast Vietnam vet in Hollywood history. While exploring Mexico, he meets and falls for a water nymph named Yyalah (Susan Damante in a cheesy blonde wig that hangs down to her rump). She loves David too (his vapidity notwithstanding), but there's a problem: a water nymph can never be with anyone who has a soul. So David sets about attempting to lose his. This leads him to Alotta, Queen of Witches (Dyanne Thorne of the notorious "Ilsa" trilogy), who agrees to destroy David's soul. But her being a witch and all, she demands unsavory stuff in return. When Alotta asks if David understands the terms of their pact, he screams, "Yes! Take my soul, damn you!" So she does, in an unintentionally riotous nude scene. Now he and Yyalah can be together, but difficulties arise as they are wont to do in your typical human/water-nymph relationship.

You know what, though? The plot is really beside the point. BLOOD SABBATH was made for one reason: endless shots of beautiful young women cavorting in the nude. That's right, folks. This film delivers a bevy of butt cheeks, boobies and bushes for the grindhouse crowd to ogle! Its other saving grace is Les Baxter's trippy, mind-blowing score; makes me wish there had been a soundtrack album.

As for the acting, it alternates between stilted cue-card reads and pyrotechnic scenery-chewing. The "special" effects include the severed head of a murdered priest, which looks like paper mache with red paint and a bad toupee. David's "Vietnam flashback" scenes appear to have been shot in the underbrush of a freeway rest area. Though the coven lives in Mexico, none of the characters speaks Spanish, or even sports a Mexican accent; the location shooting clearly took place in an American state park. And the less said about the cobweb-laden set piece that passes for the witches' dungeon, the better.

Decent enough, if for only a few reasons
slayrrr6668 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
"Blood Sabbath" isn't that great, but there are a few things to it anyway.

**SPOILERS**

Traveling through the countryside, ex-Vietnam soldier David, (Anthony Geary) finds that Yyalah, (Susan Damante-Shaw) is a special kind of water nymph that is unable to have a relationship with anyone else. When they start spending time together anyway, Alotta, (Dyanne Thorne) finds out and forces them to end their romance, which he can't stand and sets out to destroy them by casting a spell on him to join her coven of witches. Mistaking it to allow him to be with her, he agrees and undergoes the ceremony, only to wind up in her control and is forced to do her bidding, nearly crippling their relationship. Finally understanding that he was being controlled all along, she sets out to free him from her grasp using her own magic and enabling them to spend their lives together.

The Good News: There was a couple good things in here. One of the best things is that the film has an abundant amount of nudity. There's so few clothes are worn that nearly three-fourths of the film has someone nude or topless, which is a staggering number that is nicely appreciated and really sells the film. Much of this is due to the film's habit of showcasing the witches completely nude as they prance around doing whatever is willed upon them, and that is a good portion of the film. Even some of the later scenes, where the Queen gets involved in the activities, it gets even better and much more improved. There's also some fun to be had from it's coven activities. The ceremonies that occur throughout, as well as the scenes that feature them cavorting around with others in order to play around with others to get what they want and they're all pretty fun and enjoyable. The later scenes where the spells are put on display, where there's a bunch of really great scenes that make for some really nice moments. The last one is the fact that this one has a rather nice pagan atmosphere that comes along from the interaction within the different forms of spirits with each other, and it feels very dream-like at times. These here are the film's good points.

The Bad News: There wasn't much wrong with it. The thing with this is that the film exists solely for it's nudity, meaning that not a whole lot of anything else happens. This one, for those who haven no need for the nude factor, won't find this one too interesting or exciting, making this one incredibly boring for most of the time. That's not all too good for a film, since the film's pacing is so slow and dream-like that it takes an eternity for something to happen, which isn't helped along by the film's lack of action that, if found in the right mood and conditions, this one can come across as being boring and completely worthless. Those who don't have an appreciation for it's good points will be the ones who come out of this with that mentality, but overall it's the only real thing hurting it.

The Final Verdict: Not really a whole lot of enjoyable elements beyond the nudity, which is the main area of focus for this one. This one will really only mainly appeal for those looking for some cheap exploitative thrills or just in the mood for some harmless nudity, all others though should heed caution.

Rated R: Full Nudity, several sex scenes and Mild Violence

Rather charming nude witch psychedelic romance horror
Bloodwank9 March 2011
Films like Blood Sabbath make me I wish I had been born 30 odd years before I was, and in America. Its not the quality that makes me crave them on a big screen but the frequency, these offbeat oldies oftimes pulse just the way I do, and on the best of occasions I can feel them in my bones. Blood Sabbath works just this way, ample charms and never intended as anything more than it is. The plotting is nearly as bare as its women, but actually throws up some interesting points, I doubt too much thought went into it but its a nice unifying thread. Basically a wimpy Vietnam vet named David gets tangled up with a cult of witches after falling for a water nymph, leading to interesting repercussions. Actor Anthony Geary has little more than a wafer of presence as David but the character is still interesting. Being a Vietnam veteran devoid of any significant craziness makes him an anomaly of the era's drive in cinema, but his past sets up some motivation for his desires. Then there's the way in which the film treats his motivations and somewhat suspect behaviour in the later stages, largely without judgement. Even when outright horror intrudes things remain fairly upbeat, and this establishment of possibilities which are then largely left aside is a feature I found rather fascinating. Its as if the film-makers wanted to make a horror film, but particularly wanted not to bum out any cinema patrons, who would likely have some kind of viewing aids on the go and not be in the market for any down feelings. Normally I wouldn't dig this approach at all, but it contrasts quite nicely with the underlying darkness of the themes, and also the film has enough in the way of lovely women to make the lack of weight far from an issue. Comely Susan Damante has a perfectly charming presence as water nymph Yyalah (I hate water but would happily spend eternity in a lake with her), and an impressive array of beauties make up the rest of the witch cult, including (apparently) an uncredited Uschi Digard. Natural breasts, soft round asses and plentiful sweet unshaven bush, once things get moving there's a delectable smattering of nude dancing and seduction scenes, backed up with a spot of atmospheric lightning and a cool Les Baxter score. Smooth pipes, gentle percussion, lulling guitar, soft and psychedelic stuff that goes down a charm. Oh and Dyanne Thorne is the head witch, cunningly named Alotta, she's a sultry, dominant and macabrely giggling delight in the part, clad mostly in a real snazzy red gown kinda garment. This is really a film for select audiences, more a sexploitation joint than horror and never too graphic or challenging, those who dig this kind of sexy hippy era time capsule fare may well get a kick out of it though, much as I did. Worth a watch if it seems like your cup of tea, but it doesn't re-invent the wheel or anything.

witches & vets,dyanne thorn&lsd?

i give this one an "8".it's not perfect though i do really like it. it's likesome late night psychedelic folk-lore. the film is available on pal format but not ntsc unfortunately. i'd highly recommend it to anyone who loves psychedelic skin flicks or witch films in general. i often find myself double billing it with "the dunwich horror"-basically due to the time frame of the films as they really don't have much in common except for the psychedelic factor. i have to say check it out, though be for warned your not in for a thrill ride here. but it does have dyanne thorn so your definitely in for eye-popping visuals there. this cinefiend says "tune in turn on and hit play".

I love it
Ross-112 September 2001
this film with its terrible special effects and no existent storyline has earned a special place in my heart, the 'decapitated' head that looked nothing like the decapitee, the poor lighting, the even worse dialogue I LOVE it

Glad I only paid £2.97 for it.
enquiries-1819 April 2004
A passable load of nonsense lent a certain charm by the utter soppiness of the two main characters - a young man and his water nymph girl friend.

They are kept from getting together because he has a soul and so he seeks out an evil witch to take his soul away so that he can be with his water nymph forever. This seemed to involve a lot of topless jiggling by said evil witch.

The same weekend I bought this DVD I also bought Octopus II, She Lives by Night, and Boogeyman 2, and compared to them this was a masterpiece! Still I was glad I'd only paid £2.97 for it.

Enjoyable 70's soft-core horror oddity
Woodyanders16 February 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Shell-shocked Vietnam veteran drifter David (a likable performance by Anthony Geary; Luke on "General Hospital"!) wanders into a remote woodland region where he meets and falls in love with beautiful, but unattainable water nymph Yyalah (a charming portrayal by fetching blonde Susan Damante). However, David must give his soul to evil, cunning, and duplicitous witch queen Alotta (a perfectly cast Dyanne Thorne of "Ilsa" infamy) in order to actually be with Yyalah. Director Brianne Murphy, working from an offbeat script by William A. Bairn, concocts a genuinely quirky dark fairytale-type psychedelic atmosphere and nicely explores the theme of romantic obsession. The draggy pace, trippy visuals (Michael Margulies did the pretty cinematography), meandering narrative, the flavorsome south-of-the-border Mexico setting, and especially Les Baxter's divinely groovy prog-rockish score all give this picture a singularly funky'n'heady drugged-out vibe. Moreover, there's oodles of yummy bare distaff skin: The ubiquitous and ever-tantalizing Uschi Digard briefly pops up (and out) as a hippie chick while Alotta's lovely coven members are played by such 70's sexploitation regulars as Kathy Hilton, Lynn Harris, Jane Louise, and Terri Johnson. Sam Gilman contributes a solid turn as friendly old-timer Lonzo. Plus this flick earns extra points for having the guts to kill off the local padre by decapitation. A real loopy hoot.

Tons of Naked Witches
Michael_Elliott4 July 2017
Blood Sabbath (1972)

** (out of 4)

David (Anthon Geary) is walking around the country when he comes into a small town. He goes to sleep one night in the woods and is woken up by four naked women climbing over him. He manages to escape from them (why?) and then meets one woman and quickly falls in love but she keeps refusing him. It turns out he's gotten involved with a coven of witches and now they are going up against Alotta, the Queen of the Witches (Dyanne Thorne).

BLOOD SABBATH isn't a masterpiece or even a very good movie but it's got a few interesting aspects that make it worth watching. I'd be shocked if the budget was over $100,000 but that's not a slam on the picture. It's clear that they weren't working with much of a budget yet they appeared to find every woman that was willing to strip down. The film might not offer a very original story but it offers up plenty of nudity and then there's Thorne.

The biggest problem with this film is its pacing. The film moves way too slow for its own good and this was especially true for the final twenty-minutes or so. Before all of that, we're actually treated to a mildly entertaining film. I thought Geary was good in the lead role and at least kept you interested in what's going on. Susan Damante was good as well and it's always fun to see Thorne.

Another good thing about the movie was the setting as you really did get the feeling that you were out in the middle of nowhere. BLOOD SABBATH isn't going to have too many fans out there and especially since there are so many better movies dealing with witches. Still, if you're a fan of these types of movies this one is worth seeing.

Hot Naked Chicks Terrorize War Vet!
lovecraft23125 March 2008
The world's least convincing Vietnam Vet (Tony Geary) finds himself in the middle of a conflict involving a coven of hot naked chicks. Oh, and they all want to have sex with him/rape him (Oh no!)

Yes, that's the premise. Done while Vietnam was still in our psyche (and the hippie movement was dying, thank God), "Blood Sabbath" is one of those sleazy, strange horror/exploitation flicks that played in drive in theaters. As you can see from the premise, the movie is as dumb as it sounds. Nudity is abundant (not that there's anything wrong with that), dialog is stilted, Vietnam flashbacks are poorly done and have little to do with the ridiculous plot, and the movie in itself is a totally surreal experience.

Honestly, how do you rate a movie like this? It's bad, but it's so strange and stupid that it defies description. I honestly can't see an oddity like this being made today. See it if you want to see what independent horror was like before "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and after "Night of the Living Dead."

Awesome score by Les Baxter BTW.

The Naked And The Nude...
azathothpwiggins29 October 2021
David (Anthony Geary) is plagued by a vanload of nefarious hippies, then chased through the woods by a foursome of beautiful, naked hippie chicks. Hitting his head on a rock, David is transported to some dreamland / alternate reality, where he falls in love with a water nymph named Yyala (Susan Damante).

This angers Alotta (Dyanne "Ilsa" Thorne), the half-naked Queen of the Witches, who gathers her coven of fully-naked witches to hatch her plan. David could very well be doomed!

BLOOD SABBATH is basically a battle between good and eeevil, accentuated by copious nudity and mod, topless dancing. This is as 1970's as it could possibly be.

A wonder to behold...
