LeAnn Rimes is one of the biggest names in country music. Fans watching The Masked Singer Season 11 will see her hit the stage in 2024, reminding viewers of Rimes’ powerful pipes and the beautiful songs she’s released through the years. However, it hasn’t been easy for the superstar. When she was just 14 years old, she released a version of the same song as Trisha Yearwood on the same day — and it sparked a “feud” that country fans will never forget. Here’s what Rimes said about it.

There aren’t a lot of precedents in pop music for the pairing of Billie Eilish and Finneas, when it comes to brother-and-sister performing or songwriting duos. But in the world of music for films, it might not be too soon to start considering a comparison with a very famous married duo: Alan and Marilyn Bergman, the long-reigning king and queen of movie theme songs. The Bergmans weren’t a fully self-contained songwriting unit; they primarily worked as lyricists, joining up with outside composers like Michel Legrand or Marvin Hamlisch on Oscar-winning material like “The Windmills of Your Mind,” “The Way We Were” and the song score of “Yentl.” But it’s their names that are synonymous with film songs like few others’. Could it be that the O’Connells are following in their footsteps?

Silk Sonic just swept all four of their nominations at the 2022 Grammy Awards, which didn’t only bring Bruno Mars‘s career total to 15 trophies from the Recording Academy, it also continued a remarkable undefeated streak for the singer-songwriter: he hasn’t lost a single Grammy since 2014. He’s eligible for more awards in 2023 since Silk Sonic’s full album, “An Evening with Silk Sonic,” wasn’t released until this eligibility period, but another artist with an equally remarkable winning streak is also eligible for awards in 2023 Adele. Since they could potentially compete in the same top categories, they can’t both stay undefeated.

The past 12 months have been outstanding for H.E.R. Not only did she pick up two Grammys at the 2021 ceremony including Song of the Year for “I Can’t Breathe,” she also won an Academy Award for Best Original Song a few weeks later for “Fight For You” from “Judas and the Black Messiah.” “Fight For You” was then submitted to the 2022 Grammys, and it has been nominated for Song of the Year, Best Traditional R&b Performance, and Best Song Written for Visual Media. Now it’s the front-runner for the latter two according to Gold Derby’s odds. But just how common (or uncommon) is it for Oscar-winning songs to have Grammys to their name as well?

It’s 3 p.m. on a beautiful Southern California day and Barbra Streisand is in bed. “I’m still in my nightie,” she says. “I love being in my bed.”
Of course, her dogs — Miss Violet and Miss Scarlett — are by her side. “They take their naps in my bed,” Streisand tells me on today’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast.
Leave it to Streisand to work from her boudoir. She’s promoting her new album, “Release Me 2,” a collection of 10 recordings from the Egot winner’s vault that have never been released. On the recording that debuts Aug. 6, she sings “I’d Want It to Be You” with Willie Nelson on a recording that was first produced for her 2014 album “Partners.” “The Rainbow Connection” with Kermit the Frog was recorded in 1979. “I did it basically for my son [Jason Gould], who was a big fan of ‘The Muppet Movie...

The 37th Grammy Awards, held in March 1995, were an especially influential ceremony thanks to Tony Bennett’s controversial Album of the Year win for “MTV Unplugged,” which led the academy to introduce their now-infamous and now-deceased nomination review committees to decide the ultimate contenders. But there was a more overlooked result that took place on the same night, and it was actually pretty rare: Sheryl Crow (“All I Wanna Do”) and Bruce Springsteen (“Streets of Philadelphia”) split the awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year, respectively. That was actually the last time that two songs split those awards when both songs were nominated in both categories.
Prior to Crow/Springsteen, Record and Song of the Year had split like that only seven times:
1963: “I Left My Heart In San Francisco” by Tony Bennett (Record) and “What Kind of Fool Am I?” by Sammy Davis Jr....

Barbra Streisand has unearthed a previously unreleased duet with Willie Nelson, “I’d Want It to Be You,” which will appear on her upcoming rarities album, Release Me 2, out August 6th via Columbia Records and Legacy Recordings.
Streisand and Nelson’s version of “I’d Want It to Be You” was meant to appear on Streisand’s 2014 album, Partners, a collection of duets with various male singers. The duet, however, didn’t make the final cut as the track was still a work-in-progress when it came time to release the album.

Al Kasha, the Academy Award-winning composer who, along with songwriting partner Joel Hirschhorn, won Oscars for the soft rock disaster movie classics “The Morning After” and “We May Never Love Like This Again,” died Tuesday in Los Angeles. He was 83.
His death was announced by spokesperson Deborah Radel. A cause of death was not disclosed.
Dominating music charts – and Oscar’s Best Original Song category – in 1973 with “The Morning After,” from The Poseidon Adventure, and again in ’75 with “We May Never Love Like This Again” from The Towering Inferno, Kasha and Hirschhorn returned to film songwriting with 1977’s Disney classic Pete’s Dragon. The duo was Oscar-nominated for that song score and the song “Candle On The Water,” sung by Pete’s Dragon star Helen Reddy.
For his Broadway stage work, Kasha received Tony Award nominations for the scores of 1981’s Copperfield and 1982’s Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

As country singers go, Crystal Gayle has long been a sparkling diamond in a rhinestone world. While the singer’s recently released You Don’t Know Me beautifully showcases her elegant, middle-of-the-road vocal delivery — a quality that led her to become one of the most successful crossover artists of the late Seventies — the record also pays homage to Gayle’s deep, abiding connection to vintage country music.

On Monday, Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” set a new record, topping Billboard’s Hot 100 for 17 weeks. To achieve this, the single kept six rival pop stars out of the top spot, garnered five remixes (don’t forget Cupcakke’s), lasted for more than four months, nearly spanned three Democratic debates, enjoyed two times as many chart points as the poor suckers in the Number Two position, and spawned one massive debate about the state of country music. “You’ll know before the dance is through that you’re in love with her and she’s in love with you.”
That lyric is from the very first Best Song Oscar winner, “The Continental,” from the 1934 Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers musical, “The Gay Divorcee.” It’s a celebration of the power of dance to ignite the flames of desire.
Now “Shallow,” a more clear-eyed view on matters of the heart (“Ain’t it hard keeping it so hardcore?”) from “A Star Is Born” is part of that Academy Award tradition. But the fact is, such honored love songs are becoming a rarity.
It used to be that romantic tunes regularly caught Oscar’s ear. Occasionally, a song of yearning like 1939’s “Over the Rainbow” from “The Wizard of Oz,” “When You Wish Upon a Star” from 1940’s “Pinocchio” and “White Christmas” from 1942’s “Holiday Inn” broke through. There...

While new albums from Paul McCartney and Eminem led last week’s Billboard 200 album chart, the entry at Number Three, besting the week’s chart placement by megastars Drake and Ariana Grande, comes from the somewhat unlikely realm of Christian music. Lauren Daigle, whose Lafayette, Louisiana, upbringing exposed her to country, Cajun and zydeco music, debuted on the chart with her sophomore studio LP, Look Up Child, selling an impressive 115,000 units. That’s the best showing for a female Christian album since LeAnn Rimes topped the Billboard 200 in 1997 with You Light Up My Life.

“Remember Me” from “Coco” is the favorite to win the Best Original Song Oscar, but it needs to watch out for “This Is Me” from “The Greatest Showman” — not just because it’s a huge hit and NBC is using it as its Winter Olympics soundtrack, but because it’s the Golden Globe champ. Before you scream “The Globes and Oscars never pick the same song winner!”, know that they have agreed the past three years and their split choices are a relatively new phenomenon.
The Globes gave out its first song award to the title track from “Town Without Pity” (1961) — the Oscars went with “Moon River” from “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” — but didn’t start handing out the prize annually until three years later. The Globes and Oscars matched only once that decade, for “The Windmills of Your Mind” from “The Thomas Crown Affair” (1968).

There was a time when best original song contenders easily took up residence on top 40 radio: 1977's "You Light Up My Life" (from the film of the same name) was one of five Academy honorees from the decade to top the Billboard Hot 100, and seven more Oscar recipients reached No. 1 in the '80s. 64 years ago today, the world was introduced to one of TV’s most celebrated couples, Lucy and Ricky. “I Love Lucy” premiered on CBS on October 15, 1951. The show made its mark by daring to address some major social issues of the 1950s, by changing the way television is taped with audiences, and by inventing the TV re-run. Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz continue to get laughs out of generations of audiences, and their tale will soon be told in an Aaron Sorkin-penned biopic. Other notable October 15 happenings in pop culture history: • 1960: The 100th episode of “Perry Mason” aired on CBS. • 1965: Jimi Hendrix signed a three-year contract with entrepreneur Ed Chalpin. The contract later caused legal and career problems for Hendrix. • 1977: “You Light Up My Life” by Debby Boone started its reign on the Billboard Hot 100, knocking Meco’s disco take on the “Star Wars” theme from the top.

The Motion Picture Academy is embroiled in a minor dustup involving the disqualification of one of the five nominees for Best Original Song because of some shady campaigning. The songwriter of “Alone, Yet Not Alone” is fighting back, and most aggravatingly, “Godless Hollywood” is being blamed for unfairly picking on this plucky underdog of a nominee, which is the theme song to an obscure Christian film that has only played in a few theaters. Why, it’s a regular “David vs. Goliath!”
It doesn’t help the songwriter’s case that the song is terrible, and sounds like an outtake from the Sandi Patti box set.
Of course, this wouldn’t be the first time The Academy nominated terrible songs and left out more deserving fare. In fact, here are a few Best Original Song nominees from the past that should have been disqualified instantly. Not for any impropriety … but because they suck.

New York — The playboy boyfriend of a fashion designer was convicted Thursday of strangling and drowning her in the bathtub of a swank hotel room. Nicholas Brooks, whose father was an Oscar-winning composer who wrote "You Light Up My Life," put his face in his hands silently as the murder verdict was read. His girlfriend, Sylvie Cachay, was found partially clothed in an overflowing tub in their rented Manhattan hotel room on Dec. 9, 2010. Cachay's friends cheered when the verdict was read, and Brooks' sister wept loudly and shook. Brooks, 27, faces 25 years to life

A successful Christian songwriter once told me that the key to writing a hit faith-based crossover song was to write lyrics that relate to everyone, Christian or not. In other words, if you’re looking for God in the music, you’ll find Him, but if you’re looking for a song about how much you love your boyfriend, that’s what you’ll hear – You Light Up My Life is a perfect example. Some of the most successful movies with Christian elements follow suit. The Passion of the Christ proved that moviegoers will seek out a straight forward version of the resurrection of Jesus - it grossed $611 million worldwide. But there’s also evidence that audiences like an allegorical version of the greatest story ever told as well. The Matrix, The...

It's not clear yet what form the Oscars' tribute to the James Bond franchise will take. On Friday, the Academy announced it had booked Shirley Bassey for her first-ever Oscar show appearance, so at the very least, we're likely get to hear her belt out one or more of the three Bond movie theme songs she recorded ("Moonraker," "Diamonds Are Forever" and of course, "Goldfinger"). We also know Adele will be on hand to sing her currently nominated theme to "Skyfall." Beyond that, Oscar host Seth MacFarlane has made a promo clip where he plays a bartender who makes fun of James Bond (Pierce Brosnan, in an archival clip) for the distinctive way he orders his martini. Otherwise, there are few clues as to what shape the tribute will take, though there is a rumor that all six men who've played 007 -- Daniel Craig, Brosnan, Timothy Dalton, Roger Moore, George Lazenby...

Last week’s True Blood served up a host of shocking moments, including a cop shooting his friend and lady-love in the head, a gruesome beheading, and a very pregnant woman violently stabbing the father of her child to death in a demonic ritual. But the episode’s climactic scene – where a band of drugged-up vampires crashed a Bourbon Street karaoke bar and devoured the wedding party enjoying a round of “You Light Up My Life” inside – is the scene that has many viewers talking. And some of those viewers are talking about calling it quits on the series.
Throughout television history, many shows have lived and died based on their ability to balance shock with reassurance: play it too safe, and the show is dull and lifeless; push too far into squirm-inducing territory, and you risk alienating your audience. It's a tightrope walk that has claimed its fair share...

The saying goes: If Hollywood is really the movie capital of the world, then Oscar night is the world’s biggest wrap party, and like all parties, each event comes with unwelcome guests, embarrassing situations, strange fashions and controversial moments. In fact, controversy and the Oscars seem to go hand in hand and despite the fact that the Academy Awards are, for the most part, an elegant and tightly controlled affair, some very strange things do occur. Let’s take a look back through the history of the Academy Awards, and some of it’s strangest and more controversial moments – which sadly were also the most memorable.

Christian rockers Casting Crowns are vying for their first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 next week with “Come to the Well.” Should the band succeed, it will mark the first time that an album has topped both the Billboard 200 and the Christian albums chart since LeAnn Rimes’ “You Light Up My Life” in 1997, according to Billboard.com. With Nielsen SoundScan's tally still a few days away from its Sunday close, it’s too soon to tell it Casting Crowns will triumph or if Adele’s “21” will land at the top as both are on target to sell between 100,000-110,000 units,...

Joseph Brooks was hardly a household name, but his work became famous in 1977 when he penned the hit song “You Light Up My Life,” originally sung by Debby Boone. In fact, Brooks won an Oscar for the song, and went on to have a very prolific and successful career.
Unfortunately that career was marred recently by allegations of multiple sexual assaults, and over the weekend, as Brooks awaited trial for the charges, he took his own life. Authorities have said that Brooks left a three-page suicide note, which, among other things, discussed his health issues. Brooks is survived by a son, Nicholas Brooks, who himself is currently awaiting trial for murder.

Joseph Brooks, who killed himself yesterday at his Manhattan apartment, won an Oscar for the bestselling song "You Light Up My Life," from the movie of the same name which Brooks himself directed. Accompanied by several young girls, Debby Boone (photo), who reportedly claimed she dedicated the song to God every time she sang it, performed "You Light Up My Life" at the 1978 Academy Awards ceremony. Though nothing compared to the furor following Best Supporting Actress Vanessa Redgrave's acceptance speech, the wholesome "You Light Up My Life" engendered its own bit of ungodly controversy. After Boone's performance, host Bob Hope announced that the [...]...

Songwriter Joseph Brooks, 73, who won an Oscar in 1977 for the song "You Light Up My Life," was found dead in his East Village apartment yesterday. It was probably a suicide, authorities say-- he was found with a plastic bag over his head and a helium tank nearby that may also have had a hand in Brooks' death.
Brooks was in the news recently when his estranged son, Nicholas Brooks, 24, was charged with the murder of girlfriend Sylvie Cachay, a swimsuit designer, earlier this year. There was a great New York Magazine article about both Brooks men awhile ago.

Joseph Brooks, the Oscar and Grammy winning producer, director, screenwriter and composer, was found dead today of an apparent suicide. Brooks was in poor health and about to stand trial on charges that he lured women for acting auditions, drugged them and then raped them. Brooks had plead innocent to the charges. In 1977, Brooks was the creative force behind You Light Up My Life, a low-budget romance that was cleverly marketed around a title song that won him and Oscar and a Grammy. The film was also a major hit, but Brooks' follow-up efforts never repeated the success. Ironically, Brooks son Nicholas is also in legal trouble, charged with murdering his girlfriend.
