Broadway and film star Joel Grey and John Kander, composer of Cabaret, Chicago and more, will receive the 2023 Special Tony Awards for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre.
Grey was the original Amos Hart in the 1996 Chicago and the original Emcee in Cabaret on Broadway, for which he won a Tony Award. He later received an Academy Award, Golden Globe and BAFTA for his performance in the film adaptation. Kander, who co-wrote those legendary musicals with the late lyricist Fred Ebb, is currently represented on Broadway with the musical New York, New York.
“We are immensely thrilled to honor two legends in their own rights. John Kander has composed the soundtrack to all of our lives – meeting us in every decade – creating unforgettable scores for Cabaret, Chicago, Kiss of the Spider Woman, and his current Broadway hit New York, New York,” said Charlotte St. Martin, president of the Broadway League.

As a twice-wounded veteran of the Vietnam War, Oliver Stone had a solemn responsibility to drive home the savagery of this tragically misguided conflict to modern audiences via "Platoon." It had been a little over a decade since the last U.S. helicopter left Saigon, and the filmmaker wanted to make sure no one would forget the myriad of atrocities committed in America's name. This meant he had to place the highest of premiums on authenticity, from the locations down to the cast.
Given that the film was going to be a showcase for numerous young actors, Stone found himself inundated with hungry ingenues eager to make the leap to stardom. Though the higher ranking officers like Sargents Barnes and Elias would be played by more seasoned performers like Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe, their charges had to be fresh-faced kids who looked like they'd been plucked out of their...

It’s been eight years since the first episode of “Are You The One?” (Ayto) premiered. Although the dating show didn’t hit mainstream fame immediately, it’s built a steady following and widely dispersed fan base over the years — even getting its own spin-off, “Are You The One: Second Chances.”
The dating series remains a fan-favorite among other series like “Ex on the Beach.” Some have even said this could be regarded as one of the best dating-style TV shows witnessed in the last decade. Many fans have likened it to “The Real World,” considered the Og of reality TV. Others may disagree, but no doubt, Ayto is one of the most entertaining dating shows you’ll watch.
If you’re a fan or someone interested in diving into this dating series, you probably have some questions. What’s Ayto been up to these days? Was the show paused due to the pandemic?...

“Basic Instinct” was a landmark for erotic thrillers, and few of its kind have bested it since.
Paul Verhoeven’s twisted murder mystery debuted March 20, 1992, and grossed over $352 million worldwide as audiences fell for the psychological game between an overworked and under-loved cop (Michael Douglas) and a novelist (Sharon Stone) who might be an ice pick-wielding murderer. Jeanne Tripplehorn marked her film debut as Dr. Beth Garner.
Yet the true mystery remains just how intense the behind-the-scenes production for “Basic” really was. The San Francisco-set psychological whodunnit led to backlash, nightmares, and intense set confrontations.
Even after Stone previously starred in Verhoeven’s “Total Recall,” she had to fight her way into the audition room for “Basic Instinct.” And that famed leg-crossing interrogation scene? Well, it lacked consent about the Nsfw camera angle.
While Verhoeven later teamed up with “Basic Instinct” screenwriter Joe Eszterhas for 1995’s “Showgirls,” “Basic Instinct” spawned a 2006 sequel,...

Nathan’s digital afterlife is getting a lot more complicated, romantically, in the trailer for Upload Season 2 (premiering with all seven episodes Friday, March 11 on Prime Video).
Now that his ex-girlfriend Ingrid has uploaded to Lakeview to be with him, Nathan’s heart appears to be more conflicted than ever. One minute he’s kissing the blonde, and the next, he’s thinking about how beautiful his customer service angel Nora looks, which she can hear thanks to some disturbing new tech. But Nora’s not just sitting around, watching Nathan and Ingrid make-out. (Ok, she’s doing a little bit of that.

Charlie Sheen, played Chris Taylor
My brother Emilio Estevez and I were huge fans of Scarface and Midnight Express, which were both written by Oliver Stone. Emilio kept talking to me about Oliver’s new Vietnam film, which he was auditioning for. He got the lead part, Chris Taylor, but then couldn’t do it because of scheduling conflicts. When I auditioned, Oliver said I was “too mannered” and needed to do more work. So I did The Boys Next Door and Lucas – and I got the part, but only if Willem Dafoe approved. I didn’t meet Willem until we got to the Philippines. He ran past me in our hotel and gave me a hug. Later, Oliver came up to me and said: “Willem digs ya.

Jessalyn Gilsig has a long and colorful resume playing characters we often love to hate.
On Disney+'s Big Shot, Gilsig is an assistant coach at an all-girls school named Holly. Holly is warm and genuine, with a respectable and healthy understanding of work/life balance.
Put simply, there isn't a single thing about Holly that is anything but lovely, and Gilsig plays her beautifully.
Big shot centers on Coach Marvyn Korn, played by John Stamos, a former college coach out of prospects who takes what he thinks is a professional tumble down to coaching high-school basketball.
Landing the role of Holly brought Gilsig together again with producer David E. Kelly, with whom she worked on the acclaimed series Boston Public, and director Bill D'Elia, with whom she's worked several times over the years.

Trailblazing director Penelope Spheeris has very few fucks left to give.
Spheeris first came on the scene with her Los Angeles punk rock documentary “Decline of Western Civilization,” followed by the disturbing punk drama “Suburbia” starring Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea. But after directing several more independent films, huge success with “Wayne’s World,” and then some lightweight studio comedies, she basically lost faith in Hollywood. A run-in with the Weinsteins was one of the main catalysts, coupled with the industry’s general lack of interest in women filmmakers at the time.
For now, filmmaking is on the back burner while she finishes working on building two houses in L.A. and taking care of her foster kids. While making “Decline Part III,” she developed a deep connection with the runaway teens portrayed in the documentary, and started fostering children. She’s also writing a book about her wild ride in the business,...

Disney Television Studios has launched a major rebrand of its three studios, 20th Century Fox Television, Fox 21 TV Studios and ABC Studios/ABC Signature. The move comes nearly 18 months after Disney’s $71.3 billion acquisition of key 21st Century Fox assets and seven months after the Disney-owned film companies — 20th Century Fox Studios and Fox Searchlight Pictures — dropped “Fox” in January to become 20th Century Studios and Searchlight Pictures.
ABC Studios and its cable/streaming subsidiary ABC Signature, led by president Jonnie Davis, will merge into one studio entitled ABC Signature. Fox 21 Television Studios, led by president Bert Salke, will be renamed Touchstone Television. 20th Century Fox Television, led by president Carolyn Cassidy, will become 20th Television. Because they are all part of Disney TV Studios, the divisions also all dropped “studios” from their monikers.

One of the most frustrating things that I find true of lackluster movies is that following the passage of time, usually several decades, a film that was initially, and often rightfully, considered a stinker is then later touted as “the original classic!” Generally, these accolades are tied-in with advertising to promote and ultimately sell product and give the uninitiated and the curious a reason to buy the film sight-unseen. Efren C. Piñon’s Blind Rage (1976) isn’t necessarily a bad film, it just isn’t a particularly good one. Despite its 82-minute running time, the film feels twice as long and that’s never a good sign.
Blind Rage is a good example of an interesting premise executed in a fashion that can best be described as pedestrian. A product of 1970’s “chopsocky” cinema, the opening credits play over the vocals of Helen Gamboa singing the title track,...

When director Guillermo Del Toro asks for quarantine entertainment recommendations, his famous friends sure don’t disappoint.
Del Toro took to Twitter Monday for help in passing the time during the pandemic. “What are you reading, what are you watching, what are you listening to, and how many days have you been indoors?,” Del Toro posted Monday morning.
Del Toro added that he has “been indoors for over a month… self-imposed. I have gone out only for primary needs: food, supplies, etc., and I have been mostly rewatching and re-reading.”
Among the content Del Toro said he was revisiting were several films by director Mitchell Leisen, including “Death Takes a Holiday” and “Easy Living.” For literature, Del Toro said he’s re-reading “The Devils of Loudon,” a thriller by dystopian author Aldous Huxley, calling it “incredibly pertinent to what we are going through and how autonomy can be destroyed in times of crisis.

Several NBC shows were among those that showed above average audience growth in delayed viewing for the week of Feb. 24.
The third episode of “Good Girls” season 3 was the largest grower percentage-wise after seven days of delayed viewing, jumping up 150% from a 0.4 in Live+Same Day to a 1.0 in Live+7.
NBC’s “Chicago” dramas also built on a strong same day showing, due in large part to a crossover between “Chicago Fire” and “Chicago P.D.,” to end up near the top of the charts. “P.D.” added a whole ratings point to end up at a 2.2, while “Fire” wasn’t fire behind at a 2.1.
Both shows also managed the impressive feat of topping fellow NBC heavyweight “This Is Us” in delayed total viewership. “Fire” ended up with 12.7 million total viewers to “P.D.”‘s 12.6 million.

NBC’s trio of “Chicago” dramas built on their strong Live+Same Day ratings (which came largely as a result of a crossover between “Fire and “P.D.”) to score higher than average numbers after three days of delayed viewing.
“Chicago P.D.” jumped 67% to an L+3 rating of 2.0, compared to the series’ 1.8 average so far. “Chicago Fire” also beat its season L+3 average by a 0.2 ratings point, ticking up 58% from its live score to a 1.9. Interestingly enough, “Chicago Med” didn’t fare quite as well, only increasing to a 1.5 rating, down a fraction on its delayed viewing average.
Both “Fire” and “P.D.” were also among the largest total audience growers for the week of Feb 24., with the former adding 3.7 million and the latter 3.3 million after three days of delayed viewing. Compare that with their season averages, and once again it proved to be a good week overall for the Dick Wolf shows.

I came of age (whatever that means) in the ’80s, so I’m always very interested in what Severin Films re-releases from that era; some I’ve seen and some I haven’t, and others I’ve never even heard of before. The two new releases from Severin I’ll be looking at today fit in that middle category—ones I know of very well, but yet remained unseen. Until now, that is; Severin has seen fit to load up the fantasy/actioner/softcore Gwendoline (1984) and the harrowingly violent The Boys Next Door (1985) with everything a viewer could want to know.
Gwendoline (1984): Otherwise known as The Perils of Gwendoline in the Land of the Yik Yak, this film is goofy, immature, leering, and has stunning set design. Yes, it’s French; how’d you guess? Pete Davidson is opening up about his mental health struggles.
The Saturday Night Live star appeared on Marc Maron's Wtf podcast on Monday, where he revealed a psychiatrist had diagnosed him with Borderline Personality Disorder.
"Around October [or] September last year, I started having these mental breakdowns where I would, like, freak out and then not remember what happened after. Blind rage," the 23-year-old comedian explained. "I never really did any other drugs [besides marijuana], so I was like, 'I'm gonna try to go to rehab. Maybe that'll be helpful."
"So I go and I get off weed. They told me there, they're like, 'You might be bipolar,' and I was like, 'Ok.' So they're like, 'We're gonna try you on these meds,'" he added. "And then I got out [of rehab], and then I started smoking weed again -- and I'm on meds."

Pete Davidson considers this past year a "fucking nightmare," due in large part to his borderline personality disorder diagnosis back in December 2016.
In a new interview on the Wtf With Marc Maron podcast Monday, Davidson got candid about his mental health issues prior to the diagnosis, and how he had assumed his pot-smoking was the problem.
"I've been a pothead forever,” the Saturday Night Live star said. "Around October [or] September last year, I started having mental breakdowns where I would, like, freak out and then not remember what happened after.

Baron Zemo has Thor-level weaponry that can not only hurt Hulk but can blind him and make him lose total control of his temper. Beware anyone in his way – even his friend and fellow Avenger, Daredevil!
Indestructible Hulk #10 is the second and final part of “Blind Rage”, the Hulk/Daredevil team-up where writer Mark Waid merges the two characters he’s currently writing into one fairly decent storyline. Though Baron Zemo is the obvious villain of the piece, he doesn’t figure so prominently in the comic – he acts instead as the catalyst that drives Hulk crazy by blinding him, then escapes and, in an interesting twist, the comic becomes Hulk vs. Daredevil.
Because Zemo’s hideout is underneath Manhattan and contains all kinds of disastrous weaponry, Daredevil has to find a way to neutralize Hulk without blowing the place up and killing innocent people. It’s an exciting comic...

Here's an interesting and completely unexpected news item coming in for everyone's favorite Chernobyl-like celebrity, Charlie Sheen. It seems as if since his schedule is now free, he could be appearing on, of all things, Season 2 of the "The Walking Dead".
According to The Hollywood Reporter's Live Feed Blog Robert Kirkman, writer of the graphic novels and executive producer of the hit AMC television series, tells THR he would love Sheen to appear in the second season.
"Charlie call us, we will totally make that happen! We'll do whatever you want. We'll recast You as Rick," says Kirkman, still speaking to Sheen with tongue very much in cheek. "Andrew Lincoln will find something else to do."
Other options? "He can direct an episode," says Kirkman. "Actually (Sheen) could play a car for all I care," he adds. "He's awesome."
Though Kirkman's obviously kidding (we think), this got us wondering ... Has...

Celebrity rants of yore have offended plenty of minority groups, but Charlie Sheen’s bizarro comments in the past week have alienated some niche communities, including Wiccan groups and Mars enthusiasts.
Christian Day, an actual warlock who’s been outspoken about Sheen’s use of the term “Vatican assassin warlock,” will perform a cleansing ceremony on Sunday in Salem, Mass., to “protect, heal, and bind” Sheen by sending him ideas — directly into his head, via light — against maligning warlocks in the future. Day finds Sheen’s understanding of warlocks shoddy, to say the least. “The Vatican has assassinated plenty of warlocks,...

Before he got to be the most highly paid television star in America, Charlie Sheen, for about 10 years, was a movie star. But he wasn’t an A-list movie star for very long. You could make the case that his A-list status lasted for exactly one year and consisted of two landmark films by the same director — Platoon (1986) and Wall Street (1987), both of which featured him as an innocent on the front lines (of war, then finance), torn between good and evil father figures. It’s telling that Sheen is probably more prized for the character of Ricky “Wild Thing...

For the fourth consecutive year Hollywood has selected its Black List, a compilation of the top unproduced screenplays for 2009. Over 300 film professionals were asked to submit the titles of up to ten of their favorite screenplays. The only condition for the picks were that the projects would not be released in theaters this year. That means some of the Black List honorees may be in the process of being turned into movies but by far the majority remain thoughts on digital ink, a blueprint for grand dramatic ideas, high-reaching adventure and controversial ideas waiting to be burned to light.
For a screenplay to have made it onto the Black List it must have received at least five votes for it. Some scripts have five votes while the top-rated screenplay received 47 votes. That doesn't mean that the script with the most votes is the best screenplay of the year; it means...
