The creation of Ernest P. Worrell, played by actor/comedian Jim Varney, was novel for an advertising-saturated age. The idea was that the character's creators -- John R. Cherry III, his business partner Jerry Carden, and Varney -- would farm out their pre-made mascot to whatever product or service that might want him, and Ernest would hawk their wares. He wasn't invented for any one particular business. He was invented to be a pitchman-for-hire, and the Ernest ads all followed a similar format, making the commercial spots low-budget and instantly universal. Ernest was hired by the Coca-Cola Company to sell Sprite, but would also appear in ads for local businesses like the Cerrito Auto Square. Ernest was very, very popular.
Eventually, the Ernest ads became so huge and ubiquitous that the character began to bleed over into feature films and TV shows. Ernest was a media personality writ large, living...

If you were a kid back in the 80s or 90s and did a lot of traveling, one thing that was certain to be seen at a Koa Campground was the movie, Ernest Goes to Camp. It was one of the campiest movies ever made and any and every movie that followed was just as ridiculous, but they were special because of the man that made Ernest P. Worrell such an iconic name. The sad part is that the legacy of Ernest, which should live on in the life and times of the actor that made him possible, Jim Varney,

Earlier this morning, I learned my grandpa passed away. I was lucky enough to be in town visiting family and to be able to spend some time with him last night before he passed. My grandpa and I were incredibly close — he was my best friend for the longest time. I spent a lot of my childhood with him and they were some of the most fun and memorable times of my life. I’m completely overwhelmed with grief and every time I think about the times we spent together, I just break down and cry.
My grandpa’s name is Leo Paur, and he’s one of the greatest men I’ve ever known. He’s one of my heroes. He served in the Army in World War II and spent a lot of his time in the Pacific. He even served as part of the security detail for...

Summer Camp (2015)

Cast: Diego Bonita (Will), Jocelin Donahue (Christy), Maiara Walsh (Michelle), Andrés Velencoso (Antonio)
Summer Camp can mean a lot of things. I never went because I was always afraid that the reality would forever soil my idyllic idea of camp from “Meatballs”, the Michael J. Fox TV movie “Poison Ivy”, and “Ernest Goes to Camp”, and also because I was chubby, introverted, and awkward.
Thank goodness for adulthood, at least the chubby part got a little better. Of course, I also had Friday the 13th to go by as well. It took a few installments before Jason started going after the kids, usually it was the counselors that got the business end of the machete.
At “Summer Camp”, these counselors are Americans who signed up to teach English to campers in Spain. No cabins here.

Whether you wanted to or not, you probably learned a lot of people’s seven favorite films yesterday. #fav7films was the hashtag du jour, presumably because a standard top 10 would have been more likely to go over Twitter’s 140-character limit, and among the many civvies chiming in were a number of actors and filmmakers. Here, for your perusing pleasure, is a sampling of their favorites.

Right now is prime summer-camp time. No doubt there is some kid not far from you who is currently attending some kind of summer camp, making it the perfect time to reflect on past summer camps -- like the ones we've visited on the big screen. There are classics that show us the traditional camp experiences, including Meatballs, Little Darlings, Meatballs II, The Parent Trap, Meatballs 4, Ernest Goes to Camp and Lolita, as well as the horror flicks Friday the 13th and its sequels, and Sleepaway Camp and its sequels. There's also Indian Summer for those adults who are nostalgic for the old camp (and camp-movie) days. Now, though, there are all kinds of niche overnight camps, and...

Summer camp starts for kids everywhere this week, and that got us thinking about great summer-camp movies. There are the classics that show us the traditional camp experiences, including Meatballs, Little Darlings, Meatballs II, The Parent Trap, Meatballs 4, Ernest Goes to Camp and Lolita, as well as the horror flicks Friday the 13th and its sequels, and Sleepaway Camp and its sequels. There's also Indian Summer for nostalgic adults. Now, though, there are all kinds of niche overnight camps, and occasionally we get movies specificaly tied to, say, fat camps (Heavy Weights), magic camps (Magic Camp) and musical theater camps (Camp). We're even starting to get horror flicks tied to niche camps, a la this year's Stage Fright. And thanks in part to Mark...

Your Top Three is a series here at Movies.com where we choose a topic and you give us your top three picks. A lot of kids are starting summer camp this week, which should be a lot of fun. Not that I ever experienced it myself firsthand, but I have lived vicariously through all the movies made about and set at camp. I know that as long as there are no serial killers on the loose that it consists of activities like swimming and hikes and arts and farts and crafts. Fun, fun, fun. If kids entertainment in the 90's taught us anything, it's that recycling is an essential aspect of environmentalism. So I suppose we should be applauding Blue Sky Studios in their success at recycling so impressively many of that era's tropes in Rio 2. If only this this 3D computer animated sequel weren't so bland and irritating, I'd almost feel bad in telling them that Ernest Goes to Camp beat them to the down-with-the-bulldozers!/save-the-trees ending by a mere twenty-seven years. Unlike 2011's Rio, an accomplished if forgettable adventure comedy with effective across-the-board appeal (which I genuinely enjoyed), Rio 2 cannot be considered as anything beyond a children's film, and the worst kind at that. Not only does Rio 2 boast a worn out environmentalist message, it's also...

Ioncinema.com’s Ioncinephile of the Month feature focuses on an emerging filmmaker from the world of cinema. This August, we get to once again profile an American Independent filmmaker who had the wind blowing in his sails moments before he launched his micro-budgeted I Am Not a Hipster at Sundance in 2012. Before unleashing his sophomore film, the character-rich, emotionally textured Short Term 12 in March, Destin Daniel Cretton had won over the Sundance jury with the short film going by the same name (2009 Jury Prize in Short Filmmaking). Winner of the 2013 SXSW Film Festival Grand Jury Award (worth mentioning, of which I was a proud member of) and an Audience Award at a handful of fests since SXSW, its the folks at Cinedigm who’ll be launching the film in select theaters on August 23rd. Here is our profile on Destin Daniel Cretton and we’re lucky enough that...

Just when you thought that everything from the '80s and '90s had already been rebooted and rehashed a few hundred times over by now, along comes someone to remind us that there's still at least one more property that has yet to be tapped. Believe it or not, former TV commercial personality turned movie star Ernest P. Worrell is headed back to the big screen... knowhutImean, Vern? Original creator John Cherry is bringing back the classic character that he created in the mid-'80s and then essentially ran into the ground until the death of star Jim Varney in 2000. The new movie is called Son of Ernest and will obviously star a different actor donning the denim vest. Hey, what could possibly go wrong? According to Variety, production company Ruckusfilm is bringing back Ernest with the help of screenwriter Dan Ewen, who recently wrote a potential upcoming Farrelly Brothers movie called Dear Satan.

Do you remember the Ernest movies? If not, you likely weren't a child of the Eighties. I have vivid memories of watching Ernest Goes To Camp, Ernest Saves Christmas, Ernest Goes To Jail, and even Ernest Scared Stupid. These are not Oscar movies in any way, but they are stupid fun, especially for the kid in you. Ernest P. Worrell was played by the late Jim Varney who originated the role in regional commercials, national ads, and eventually a television show and movies. Ernest was a...

So, it looks like there's going to be another Ernest movie. Yes, that Ernest. The one from Ernest Goes to Camp, Ernest Saves Christmas, Ernest Goes to Jail, Ernest Scared Stupid, Ernest Rides Again, and a handful of direct-to-video releases. "Didn't Jim Varney, the man who played Ernest, die?" you are perhaps wondering. Yes, he did die, in 2000. That's why this new movie is Son of Ernest, which, according to Variety, will focus on the character's long-lost offspring. Just to be really clear, people are making a new Ernest movie.

Most movies about summer camp focus on the experience of the kids, and that’s great and that choice has given us comedies like Camp Nowhere, Ernest Goes to Camp, and Heavyweights—all fun little flicks. Taking the story from that angle means the film in question will probably skew towards a younger demographic and that its sense of humor will be a bit simpler and, as most parents would like, cleaner. Consequently, that’s exactly why movies about summer camps shown from the perspective of its staff of miscreant, wayward counselors will always be funnier. One of the best in recent memory is David Wain’s Wet Hot American Summer (which has a cast bursting at the seams with recognizable faces), but it was really just following in the grand tradition started by 1979’s Meatballs, which also just so happened to be Bill Murray’s debut in both a...

Welcome back to Junkfood Cinema; already too old for this shit. If you are reading this, you are probably doing the internet wrong. This is the weekly movie column that has maintained a hearty resilience to quality since 2009. Every Friday I fricassee a truly bad film, skewering it upon its own ineptitude. But then, just before it’s burned past the point of being palatable, I glaze it with a BBQ sauce of unabashed love and shove it directly down your throat. If you find you aren’t dead from internal bleeding, you are welcome to then enjoy the snack food item I pair with each film. Because honestly, name one person obesity ever killed, right? This week’s heart-clogger? Ernest Goes to Camp. What Makes It Bad? Whether you hated Jim Varney‘s dopey, rubber-faced bumpkin Ernest P. Worrell or you simply thought he was without merit, I’m willing to go out on a limb...

After Now and Then night for the Top 5 on "American Idol," the results show featured performances by judge Jennifer Lopez herself plus a performance from country trio Lady Antebellum.
The results are one of those shenanigans where here's one group (James Durbin, Haley Reinhart) and here's another group (Lauren Alaina, Jacob Lusk) and they make the nicest Idol pick the group that's safe (Scotty McCreery). Obviously, James and Haley were Top 2 and Lauren and Jacob were Bottom 2. Lauren is a mess waiting for the verdict, but she has nothing to fear as Jacob goes home.
Here are some highlights along the way:
The group sing "Happy Together" and it's .... oof. Gimme the delinquents from "Ernest Goes to Camp" any day."Be Yourself" is the call for the Ford Music Video and then there's a "Hell's Kitchen" segment, which is kinda funny. Lauren Alaina's omelet wins the competition, with Jacob coming in second.

Looks like another pretty dull week for DVD releases, saved only by an Adult Swim show and a couple of '80s classics on Blu-ray. Major studio titles include Yogi Bear (featuring the voices of Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake), The Tourist starring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, How Do You Know starring Reese Witherspoon, and the low budget alien invasion flick Skyline. If you're thinking that atrocious line-up can't possibly get any worse, you're wrong, because The Asylum's latest Dtv knock off Battle of Los Angeles is also out today. Fortunately, The Venture Brothers: Season 4, Part 2 is also hitting stores (along with The Complete Season 4 on Bd), plus the 25th Anniversary Edition of Stand By Me on Blu-ray and a high-def double feature of Ernest Goes to Camp and Ernest Goes to Prison. For $7.99, how can you say no? Check out the full release list after the jump.

"Meskada" (2010)
Directed by Josh Sternfeld
Released by Anchor Bay Entertainment
When this thriller premiered at Tribeca this past spring, Alison Willmore wrote, "the second film from writer/director Josh Sternfeld ("Winter Solstice") has ambitions reaching beyond being a straightforward police procedural," though critics, including her, were mixed about the end result. Nick Stahl and Rachel Nichols star as small-town sleuths who investigate a botched home invasion case that claims the life of a young child in an affluent community and enflames class divisions when the main suspects are from the poorer community nearby. Grace Gummer, Meryl Streep's second daughter to go into the family profession, makes her film debut.

This film had a great marketing campaign, but a lot of people were turned off by the ending and the acting. I don’t know. It’s not the best we’ve got and it might not be all that original – okay, it isn’t – but compared to all those horrible SyFy Channel and The Asylum films – this is a gleefully cheesy flick. Kids across America are hiking, boating, practicing archery and doing arts and crafts today, as they're well into their second week of summer camp. At least I think that's what they're doing, and I think that is traditionally how camp schedules go. I never went to overnight camp, so all I know of it is what I've seen in the movies: Meatballs, Friday the 13th, The Parent Trap, Little Darlings, Sleepaway Camp, Addams Family Values, Ernest Goes to Camp. These and more showed me what I was missing as an adolescent, and without them I might not have appreciated the silly camp comedy Wet Hot American Summer.
Whas is not exactly a parody of '80s camp movies so much as it is an antic tribute to them featuring sports, games, romance, a talent show, talking cans, the crash re-entry of Skylab and counselors who seem even less attentive than...

With the E*Trade babies headed for the big screen, it's surely only a matter of time before the singing car insurance middle man gets a bigger vehicle. What other 30 seconds have you wished were an hour and a half longer?
The worst thing, obviously, about television commercials is their brevity. Sure, the webuyanycar.com advert is fun, but just imagine how incredible it'd be if it was extended into a feature-length version. Two hours of that jingle, repeated relentlessly over and over like some sort of dotcom-era Clockwork Orange rehabilitation video. It would be a stone-cold sensation. Watch out, Avatar.
Fortunately, 20th Century Fox has picked up on the public's desire to see unnecessarily long television commercials, which is why it has just hired a writer to pen a screenplay based on the E*Trade baby advertising campaign. If you're unfamiliar with the E*Trade babies, they're basically some...

If you watch a lot of television, particularly if you can't find your DVR remote, you're bound to see a lot of commercials, and in those commercials over a period of time, you're also likely to see some of the same actors rotate through different commercials for different products. (There was an interesting article on this phenomenon a few years ago on Slate, which I can't seem to find.) More often than not, you have no idea what that actor's name is, at least until you see him or her on a television show or up on the big screen, at which point you exclaim, "Hey! That's the guy from that commercial."
Today's Seriously Random List explores the always under-appreciated "guy from that commercial." It's not about famous actors who appeared in commercials before they were stars, or even current celebrities, like Sam Waterston, who are inextricably linked to a certain product.

To continue my review of my epic journey to watch all my films from A-z, this is the Fifth part.
For those that don’t know I am watching all 700+ Dvd/Bluray films from A-z which has so far taken me 2.5 years to get to the end of H’s!
I thought I should retrospectively review each letter and give my top 5 films from each alpha block and maybe bring your attention to some films you may not have seen, films you’ve not seen in ages or films you should give another try. Click A, B, C and D to read previous parts.
The E’s are a long time coming but here it is. Firstly some films beginning with E that let down alpha group for me personally, I’m not a big fan of Easy Rider, nor the English Patient, also couldn’t care for Erin Brockovich,...

For this week's final Halloween movies list, I decided to turn hit up the real superstars: my co-workers here in the MTV Newsroom who keep this great ship moving every damn day. After the jump you'll find recommendations and reminiscences from around the office. If you're game for some heavy reading, make sure to check out the last write-up, detailing Joel Hanek's pick: "Ernest Scared Stupid." Oh yes, he went there.
As for myself (MTV Movies Blog editor Adam Rosenberg), it's a toss-up. To this day I still have occasional nightmares relating to "Candyman," the Bernard Rose-directed, Virginia Madsen-starring horror flick based on a tale by novelist Clive Barker. There's something uniquely terrifying about the Candyman's ability to attack at any time, day or night. When horror can touch you even in the relative safety of sunlight, that's something to fear.
