Although François Truffaut has written that the New Wave began “thanks to Jacquette Rivette,” the films of this masterful French director are not well known. Rivette, like his “Cahiers du Cinéma” colleagues Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Claude Chabrol and Éric Rohmer, did graduate to filmmaking but, like Rohmer, was something of a late bloomer as a director.
In 1969, he directed the 4-hour L’amour fou (1969), the now legendary 13-hour Out 1 (1971) (made for French TV in 1970 but never broadcast; edited to a 4-hour feature and retitled Out 1: Spectre (1972)), and the 3-hour Celine and Julie Go Boating (1974), his most entertaining and widely seen picture. In these three films, Rivette began to construct what has come to be called his “House of Fiction”–an enigmatic filmmaking style involving improvisation, ellipsis and considerable narrative experimentation.
Celine and Julie Go Boating
In 1975, Jacques Rivette reunited with Out 1 producer Stéphane Tchal Gadjieff with the idea of a four-film cycle.

Antichrist (Lars von Trier)
Like the majority of Lars von Trier films, from the first moments of Antichrist, one will be able to discern if it’s an experience they want to proceed with. For those will to endure its specific unpleasantness, there’s a poetic, affecting exploration of despair at its center. Chaos reigns, indeed. – Jordan R.

Close-Up is a column that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. The retrospective The Many Sins of Walerian Borowczyk is showing February 12 - June 18, 2017 in the United States and in many other countries around the world. As the reverberation of horses fervently neighing and clomping their hooves begins to permeate the opening credit soundtrack of The Beast, one may recall the similarly orchestrated donkey brays that introduce Robert Bresson’s Au hasard Balthazar (1966). Or, given its title, and the very basic concept of a young woman becoming enamored with an savage creature, one may be tempted to compare this 1975 feature to the many variations of Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve’s classic fairy tale, La belle et la bête. One would be more than a little confounded, however, by making either inadequate association. If Walerian Borowczyk’s semi-porn-semi-art-semi-monster movie bears any resemblance to another film or story, it would be...

Mubi's retrospective The Many Sins of Walerian Borowczyk is showing February 12 - June 18, 2017 in the United States and in many other countries around the world. If you were making a period movie in the classic era, it need not noticeably be any more or less unreal than a conventional contemporary film: in both cases, almost everything would be shot in the studio and every prop or costume would be made specially or brought in from a prop store. Nothing would be real.By the sixties and seventies, this approach was becoming extinct and a new generation were making films on location, with natural light, natural actors, natural clothing. For a period movie, this meant finding locations that were largely unchanged since the period in question, and bringing to them appropriate props and costumes. A filmmaker might be tempted to focus more closely on these details in order to bring to...

For over 30 years, Stefano Dimera tormented Bradys and Hortons, played opera music between implementing diabolical plots, and obsessed over his "Queen of the Night" Marlena Evans.
He was suave, sophisticated, and evil, and fans adored him.
That's why there was so much excitement over the fact that actor Joe Mascolo had taped one last set of scenes prior to his death.
And it's why so many viewers feel like the show stabbed them in the back with the Friday reveal that Stefano hadn't escaped or even been locked up and that two more fan favorites could be added to the list of corrupt cops helping to cover up Hope's involvement in Stefano's murder.
This Prague storyline has been a waste of air time from the very beginning. For the past few weeks, we've had dubious Stefano sightings, top cops arguing about whether or not to stop for ice cream, and...

This August, Mubi is paying tribute to the great, but too-often-forgotten, Jacques Rivette. His conspiratorial films, deliciously and collaboratively playing with genre, theatre, painting, literature and cinema itself, constitute the best kept secret of the French New Wave. Only a precious few, including sprawling magnum opus Out 1: noli me tangere (1971), mostly unseen until recently, and his canonical masterpiece that he made immediately after that 12-hour experiment, Celine and Julie Go Boating (1974), could be described as well known. In a belated tribute to one of our very favorite filmmakers, we're showing three rarities by Jacques Rivette, hardly screened in most countries.Additionally, for those in Los Angeles we're presenting our three films plus Celine and Julie Go Boating at the Cinefamily and for New Yorkers, we're presenting Rivette's 1981 masterpiece Le Pont du Nord at Videology in Brooklyn.Duelle (1976), August 7The Queen of the Night (Juliet Berto) battles the Queen...

French actress Catherine Frot gives a touching, masterful performance as the title character in director Xavier Giannoli’s tragicomic Marguerite. The lavish 1920s costume film centers on a wealthy baroness who loves music and fancies herself an opera singer. The problem is that she cannot sing and seems unable to hear her own off-key screeching. With her great wealth, generous support of causes and social position, no one tells her the truth.
Marguerite is a fictional film but the title character was inspired by real person, Florence Foster Jenkins, an American heiress famous for her awful singing and delusional belief in her talents who gave invitation-only concerts in elaborate costumes, which audiences viewed with a “so bad its good” appreciation. A biopic about Jenkins, starring Meryl Streep and directed by Stephen Frears, is due out later this year.
Giannoli and co-writer Marcia Romano move their story to 1921 France – the Roaring Twenties.

Sing the Body Apoplectic: Giannoli Pays Thanks to the Music
French director Xavier Giannoli borrows an obscure piece of American pop culture for his latest feature, Marguerite, a 1920s Parisian high society dramedy based loosely on the life and career of New England socialite Florence Foster Jenkins. Oblivious to her glaring lack of talent, the wealthy soprano was the source of rampant ridicule, her folly reaching an unmitigated apotheosis following a sold-out Carnegie Hall performance in an instance of truth being stranger than fiction. Resting beautifully on the masterful shoulders of Catherine Frot, an oft-Cesar nominated actress who hasn’t had the deserving international acclaim she’s due, the film’s success hinges delicately on her performance, even with a cadre of supporting players otherwise subjugated to empathetic cliché or predictably reprehensible conduct.
Marguerite Dumont (Frot) has staged a benefit concert at her home, a sprawling chateau outside of Paris.

Each month, Boris Kachka offers nonfiction and fiction book recommendations. You should read as many of them as possible. The Queen of the Night, by Alexander Chee (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Feb. 2) It’s been 15 years since Chee published his first novel, Edinburgh, a slim and powerful debut about a traumatic coming of age. He manages to both meet and defy the inevitable expectations with a grand, heavily accessorized historical epic. Queen is as operatic as its shape-shifting narrator, a professional “tragic soprano” (and former circus performer turned prostitute) chasing glory in the ashes of France’s Second Empire — until her secret past resurfaces to threaten her freedom and maybe her life. No self-conscious pastiche, this is classical, full-throated melodrama, not so much a meditation as an aria on fate. A Doubter’s Almanac, by Ethan Canin (Random House, Feb. 16)Forgive the plug of a second 500-pager, but there’s no...

★★★☆☆ Set in 1920 and loosely inspired by the life of infamous soprano Florence Foster Jenkins, Marguerite (2015) is Xavier Giannoli's follow up to disappointing Superstar, which was in competition at Venice three years ago. Marguerite's main characters are wannabes who ultimately find themselves trapped in their own delusions. Marguerite Dumont (Catherine Frot) is an untalented opera singer who believes she has a wonderful voice, regularly performing for her aristocratic friends and behaving like a diva for her butler and amateur photographer Madelbos (Denis Mpunga). In this, she is a classic Giannoli character who falls victim to their own false beliefs.
Marguerite's rendition of Mozart's Queen of the Night sees her squawking throughout the whole aria, in one of the most hilarious, albeit ear-shattering, sequences seen in Venice so far and transformed what looked to be stiff period film into something altogether different. Marguerite is undeniably, and irreparably, tone-deaf, but...

Although the after-parties are another opportunity for stars to flaunt some serious fashion, Gaga opted to stay in her dress from the Met Gala. I recently got my first Xbox One and by me, I mean my boyfriend won the new console out of a crane machine at the mall (for real) and I am jealous. So, I have to play his until I can buy my own which feels excruciatingly far away (I am still a bit bitter his was free, can you tell?) Either way, it has been an exciting week!

There’s always something crazy going on in the Big Apple and on Sunday evening (January 18) Emma Stone and Alan Cumming teamed up for a fun-filled night.
The “Amazing Spider-Man” babe and the “Eyes Wide Shut” stud, who have been starring in ‘Cabaret’ on Broadway together as of late, were in the house for “Queen of the Night” and looked fabulous as they posed for photos together.
Meanwhile, Emma recently told press that when it comes to her career she’s a bit overwhelmed with all of the blessings she’s received. ''It's been wonderful but it's also challenging and I'm going into places that I've never really allowed myself to go before with 'Birdman' and 'Cabaret'. I feel very lucky that I'm getting the opportunity to do it and I don't know how long that opportunity will last - I'm trying to learn as much as I possibly can in this time.

New York’s ‘Queen of the Night’ Is The Dinner Party Orgy You’ve Been Waiting For All your basest desires fulfilled in one night of immersive theatre. By Naveen Kumar As I descended a dim staircase to the Diamond Horseshoe in the basement of the Paramount Hotel, a young woman took me by the hand and told me I looked like I was ready to play. She led me by the hand through a dark corridor, past a taxidermy tiger draped in a gold headdress, and a round metal cage suspended from the ceiling. She swept aside a curtain and led me into private area where we stopped in front of a mirror. She rolled up my sleeve, ran her nose from my wrist to the inside of my elbow, and told me I smelled like someone who wasn’t afraid to be touched (true). She turned up [...]...

Partway through the meal at Queen of the Night, a hunky performer who had just finished an astonishing series of leaps onstage approached my dinner table and looked around. It was like gym class all over again, only this time I was chosen. He motioned for me to follow him. When we reached a dim corridor, he took my glasses, started nuzzling my neck, and said, improbably, that I smelled like desire. What was the etiquette here? Should I have whispered, “Thanks, and you smell like an acrobat”? Should I have taken the opportunity to compensate for nineteen years of monogamy by nuzzling back? Or complained that another audience member had recently come to my table and stolen a lobster?Such are the confusions of the new theatrical-culinary-pornographic fusion from the people who brought you the Box. Like that louche boîte, the subterranean space in which Queen of the Night...

Now one last time – let’s talk about my favorite (and least favorite) moments from this week’s final performances. 1. Coach wardrobe check Coach Adam Levine was going to the country club for a Great Gatsby themed party, while coach Cee Lo Green was wearing what appeared to be fancy tire treads. A bit of character history for those interested. Morrigan is a succubus born in 1678 in Scotland and is the adopted daughter of Belial of the Aensland House. When she was born, Morrigan was extremely powerful, so much so that Belial sealed away part of her power, one-third in himself to be returned upon his death, and one-third in a pocket dimension, which eventually became a being of its own, a succubus named Lilith. Unaware of Belial's action, Morrigan grew up and found her life as the Queen of the Night in the Aensland castle dull, so she frequently visited the human world to look for entertainment. On one occasion, Morrigan was drawn to a strange power (which would turn out to be the fire demon Pyron) and ventured into the human world once again. Upon her return, she was informed of Belial's death and that she was the next successor...
