Believe it or not, but this month marks the 30th anniversary of George A. Romero‘s The Dark Half. Starring Timothy Hutton in a dual role and Michael Rooker as Sheriff Alan Pangborn, the 1993 supernatural thriller brought Romero back to King’s Dominion with the late filmmaker both writing and directing the adaptation of Stephen King’s 1989 novel of the same name.
To celebrate the occasion, the Losers are unlocking their Ka-mmentary track for the underrated Friday night rental. Join co-hosts Dan Caffrey, Dan Pfleegor, and Justin Gerber as they return to Castle Rock to talk all things Romero, all things Rooker, and all things ’90s pop culture. Note: This track was recorded in March 2022, so some references might not be so topical anymore.

A new episode of the JoBlo Horror Originals video series Playing with Fear has just been released, and in this episode of the video game-themed show we’re looking at a game I didn’t even know existed until just now: a video game that was inspired by the Stephen King novel The Dark Half (buy it Here) and released in 1992, coinciding with the release of George A. Romero’s The Dark Half film (get that Here). To find out all about this game, check out the video embedded above.

Thad Beaumont must stop his killer alter-ego George Stark. The game is a graphic adventure in which the user interface commands are displayed on the screen as keys on a typewriter, while the text appears on paper coming out of the typewriter. Thad may pick up items and the...

This might sound like something that came out of the blue, kind of, but it’s easy to guess why Stephen King would praise a movie like Malignant, at least if you’re a big King fan and know something about everything he’s written. For those that do know, The Dark Half, one of his many novels which also became a movie starring Timothy Hutton, could be called the inspiration for a novel like Malignant. This movie is essentially a different version of King’s novel, and it’s very easy to explain. Both movies are based around individuals who were born with what

A re-imagination of Stephen King’s 1974 novel “Carrie” is possibly headed for the small screen — this time as a limited TV series at FX, Variety has learned.
The project is in the very early stages of development. The most recent iteration of “Carrie” came in the form of the 2013 Sony-Screen Gems film, starring Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore, directed by Kimberly Pierce and penned by Lawrence D. Cohen and Roberto Aguiire-Sacasa.
Other versions have included “Carrie: The Musical,” which first debuted on Broadway in 1988, a “Carrie” TV movie in 2002 from director David Carson and writer Bryan Fuller, and of course the 1976 Brian De Palma film, which earned Sissy Spacek a best actress nomination and Piper Laurie a best support actress nomination at the 1977 Academy Awards.

Stephen King’s horror novel “The Dark Half” is getting the movie treatment at MGM with “Her Smell” director Alex Ross Perry on board to helm.
King wrote the book in 1989 about a novelist whose pseudonym comes to life as a murderous twin after his own pen name, Richard Bachman, was revealed.
MGM first adapted a film version in 1993 with zombie horror icon George Romero directing and Timothy Hutton starring. Hutton portrayed the best-selling author Thad Beaumont, who also sells grisly crime novels under the name George Stark. When the pseudonym is exposed, the author and his wife give the other author a ceremonial burial — resulting in George Stark coming alive and going on a murder spree. The movie was a box office flop, grossing $10 million from a $15 million budget.

Alex Ross Perry (“Her Smell”) will write and direct the adaptation of Stephen King’s best-seller “The Dark Half” for MGM, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
The story had been previously turned into a 1993 MGM film, which starred Timothy Hutton. It followed an author whose crime thrillers under a pseudonym sold better than the books written with his real name. Once his pseudonym is exposed, he decides to give his other ego a burial, but things start turning sinister as the alter ego has taken on a life of its own.
King wrote the book based on his own experiences when it was revealed he was writing thriller novels under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. Those novels included “Thinner,” “Running Man,” “Rage” and “The Long Walk.”

Hulu has already released the first few episodes of J.J. Abrams and Stephen King’s Castle Rock and so far I’m loving it! If you haven’t started watching it yet, what are you waiting for!? We’ve got a new featurette to share with you today for the series which offers a behind-the-scenes look at the new season, and talks about creating an authentic Stephen King experience.
The second season of Castle Rock focuses on Annie Wilkes from King’s classic horrifying story, Misery. The synopsis explains that “a feud between warring clans comes to a boil when budding psychopath Annie Wilkes (Lizzy Caplan), Stephen King's nurse from hell, gets waylaid in Castle Rock."
Lizzy Caplan is perfect in the role of Annie and I couldn’t be happier with how the story is playing out. There are some great plot points that I didn’t see coming.

Hulu has released an interesting promo spot for Castle Rock Season 2. It takes the viewers on a 14-minute long road trip from Castle Rock to Jerusalem’s Lot and the radio is on to keep you entertained as you travel.
You are supposed to keep a lookout to see if you can see or hear anything. I will say, there are a ton of references to some of Stephen King’s popular stories including Stand By Me, Misery, Salem’s Lot, Maximum Overdrive, It, Needful Things, The Mist, Under The Dome, Pet Semetary, Sleeping Beauties, The Shawshank Redemption, 11/22/63, The Stand, The Dead Zone, and more!
For those of you who are familiar with King’s work, these references aren’t hard to catch. You just have to listen. This is actually a pretty cool promo and while it may seem boring for some, it’s exciting for the Stephen King fans like myself.

Castle Rock is switching things up for its second season.
Instead of serving as a sequel to Castle Rock Season 1, we will be getting a different tale set in the same town.
But this tale is based on Stephen King's Misery novel, which was turned into a popular movie led by Kathy Bates.
It serves as an origins story for Annie Wilkes, and Lizzy Caplan is taking on the lead role as the "budding psychopath."

I loved the first season of Hulu’s Castle Rock, which is a series that dives into the deep dark world of the Stephen King universe. The full trailer has been released for Season 2, and it’s got me super excited for the madness that is coming!

If the Summer Scaries are beginning to creep in, it may be time to start binging a new show to distract yourself from the impending end of vacation season. Luckily, Hulu is among the streaming services with a fresh slate of new content coming next month.
Beginning Sept. 1, you’ll be able to stream older franchise favorites, including the first three “Ocean’s Eleven” movies, all four “Lethal Weapons” films and all three installments of “The Matrix.”
There are other options if you’re in the mood to catch up on the latest TV. Check in with the Johnson family in the sixth season of “black-ish,” or get your tissues ready for the emotional fourth season of “This is Us,” both available on the streamer Sept. 25. And if you’re looking for a laugh from a comedy, new seasons of “American Dad,” Bob’s Burgers,” “Family Guy” and “The Simpsons...

The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is getting the movie treatment. What Stephen King story isn't these days?
The Stephen King movie renaissance will continue with an adaptation of the writer's 1999 novel The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. The project is still in its early days, according to THR, and the search for a writer to pen the script is underway.
The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon tells the surprisingly uplifting story of a 9-year-old girl named Trisha who is lost in the woods after straying from her mother and brother during a hiking trip. Forced to survive on her own, Trisha is inspired by her favorite baseball player, former Red Sox pitcher Tom Gordon, to face off against the God of the Lost, an evil entity which she believes is hunting her. Needless to say, fans of the It movies' resourceful young heroes, the Losers' Club,...

Death affects people differently. Sometimes in unexpected ways. For some, coping with the inevitable is hard to even think about. For some, they are plagued by images of their loved ones now gone. For some, the outcome can’t be accepted and so denial sets in.
What death is and what death means and all the other complicated questions that arise from this thought process can lead to a gateway of ideas that are both fascinating and terrifying. While Stephen King’s classic novel deals with the many stages of death and grief, Pet Sematary (2019) is more interested in traveling down a path of cheap thrills and visual cues already presented in Mary Lambert’s 1989 film of the same name. Bringing to mind horror films from the early aughts, Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer’s remake is made up of tiny jump scares every five minutes – a filmmaking rule that...

The Pet Sematary remake has a few nods to the book, original movie, and the larger Stephen King universe that you might have missed!
This Pet Sematary article contains major spoilers.
With its debut in April, Pet Sematary becomes one of the few works by Stephen King to receive multiple adaptations. Paramount, which first adapted the brutal book in 1989, brings a new vision of terror to Maine with a remake we quite enjoyed for the most part (especially the terrifying cat).
As Constant Readers already know, Pet Sematary is just one in a web of interconnected stories that make King's version of Maine one of the most horrible places to live. The movie pays tribute to that legacy by including many easter eggs and references to not only the original book but the 1989 movie and the larger King universe. Directors’ trademarks is a series of articles that examines the “signatures” that filmmakers leave behind in their work. In this installment, since it’s Halloween, we’re looking at the trademark style and calling signs of horror movie icon George A. Romero as director.
From a young age, George A. Romero was interested in film. He was born in the Bronx in 1940 and would frequently ride the subways as a child to go rent films. His father was a commercial artist, and this may have influenced Romero’s interests. He began making films at the age of 14 with an 8mm camera he borrowed from his wealthy uncle. He even was arrested during production of one of his first movies when he lit a dummy and then threw it off of the roof of a building. He graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a degree in theater in 1960, and continued to...

From Streams to Screams: 31 Movies from Your Favorite Masters of Horror That Are Currently Streaming
When it comes to great genre movies, there are just names you will always trust. Names like Romero, Craven, Cronenberg, Carpenter, Hitchcock, Dante, and many, many more, of course. So, with that in mind, I decided to round up 31 different films helmed by some of our Masters of Horror that are currently streaming across an array of digital platforms, including a few not-as-obvious choices that have thrilled audiences in a variety of mediums (such as William Peter Blatty and Jennifer Lynch).
Also, if you think I may have missed something that is currently streaming, do not fret—that film has most likely popped up in one of my other From Streams to Screams column, or it will later on this month. I do hope you enjoy this list, and be sure to head back in a few days when we celebrate the greatest decade in horror: the 1980s!

(Note: This post contains spoilers from the Aug. 15 episode of “Castle Rock.”)
Hulu’s “Castle Rock” might have just given an explanation to why the fictional Maine town is the focus of so much supernatural spookiness in the universe of Stephen King novels.
The show, which is partially its own King-esque story and partially an adaptation of some of his spooky ideas and recurring themes, started down the path of explaining what the heck is going on — at least partially — in its Aug. 15 episode, “Filter.” The episode finds Henry (André Holland) heading into the woods after uncovering some old videos of trips he and his dad used to take out there, wondering if there might be answers from his past to find.

If you've enjoyed unraveling the ongoing mysteries of one of the strangest (and most charming) towns in the literary worlds of Stephen King, then you can look forward to more eerie adventures in Castle Rock, as Hulu has renewed the series for a second season.
Multiple sources, including The Hollywood Reporter, reveal the news of Castle Rock's renewal. According to THR, the second season could feature "an entirely new cast," with Hulu Chief Content Officer telling Variety that the follow-up season will feature a "wholly original" story.
Showrunners and executive producers Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason will return for the second season, with Thomason confirming the show's anthology style storytelling to THR, saying, "Each season is going to be its own self-contained story: beginning, middle and end. But I think that just as the books do, we want to surprise viewers with the ways in which the stories intersect.

It’s turning into a bit of a golden age for Stephen King. It cleaned up at the box office last year, with the sequel currently filming with an all-star cast. On top of that, there’s an interesting sounding adaptation of Pet Sematary currently being shot and a fresh take on The Dark Tower in development. Given all these lucrative King-related projects, then, it’s perhaps no surprise that Hulu has officially renewed psych-horror hit Castle Rock for a second season.
The show, which is currently midway through its first season, is based on characters and settings from various Stephen King stories. For example, we have Diane “Jackie” Torrance, the niece of the famously axe-happy former (and current and future) resident of the Overlook Hotel, Bill Skarsgard as an inmate of Shawshank State Penitentiary and Alan Pangborn, a King character who’s cropped up in the The Dark Half,...

Get ready to spend some more time in Castle Rock.
Hulu announced Tuesday that it has renewed its Stephen King pseudo-adaptation, “Castle Rock” for a second season.
“Castle Rock,” which has been billed as a limited series, is the re-imagining of the entire Stephen King canon into one universe and touches on some of King’s most iconic stories and characters. The fictional Maine town sits at the center of the King universe, appearing in numerous books including “Cujo,” “The Dead Zone,” and “The Body” (the novella that “Stand By Me” was based on).
Hulu did not divulge any plot details or if any new Stephen King stories that were not used in the first season, would be adapted for the follow up.

It may be Stephen King’s world, but “Castle Rock” showrunners Dustin Thomason and Sam Shaw are more than happy to live in it.
“The things that are the most enduringly disturbing about [King’s books] are that the monsters are human,” Shaw told TheWrap. “The monsters may be the protagonist.”

When creating an original horror anthology series based on the world of Stephen King, “Castle Rock” co-creators and co-showrunners Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason knew one thing was key: leaning into the psychological aspects of what scares a person.
“We live in what might be considered the era of terror. Questions of violence and chaos and fear are at the center of a lot of conversations that people are having all over the world,” Thomason tells Variety.
In populating their version of the titular fictional town that features prominently in King stories from “The Dead Zone” to “Cujo” and “Needful Things,” Shaw says he wanted to include people who may be traumatized from things in their past but “dig in their heels” and choose to stay in the environment anyway. “All unhappy families are unhappy in their own way, and all unhappy towns are unhappy in their own way,” he explains.

Hollywood’s track record with adapting the works of Stephen King is spotty at best: For every Carrie or It the movie, there’s a Dark Tower or It the miniseries. So Hulu was smart to adapt not just a single novel from the horror master, but all of them at once, creating a sort of Stephen King extended universe. The result: the new anthology Castle Rock (debuting Wednesday, July 25), an effectively eerie patchwork of King’s most famous stories that’s reminiscent of Fargo and American Horror Story, with genuine scares and a wealth of strong performances.

Hulu has completed production on the Stephen King written "Castle Rock." This production is a series, with ten episodes expected to run in Season 1. "Castle Rock" was executive produced by J.J. Abrams. The series was also created by Sam Shaw ("Manhattan") and Dustin Thomason. Interestingly, actor Bill Skarsgård stars in this original show. Skarsgård also starred in the recent release of King's It (2017). Sissy Spacek, Melanie Lynskey and Scott Glen also star. A new trailer has just been released for the series and the clip can be found here. The synopsis blends several Stephen King characters, in a "multiverse." Shedding more light on its eclectic cast of characters (including Bill Skarsgård as a mysterious prisoner at Shawshank), the new trailer for Hulu's Castle Rock series has been revealed ahead of the show's premiere later this month.
"Welcome to #CastleRock. From Stephen King & J.J. Abrams, the Hulu Original Series based on the #StephenKing universe premieres July 25.
A psychological-horror series set in the Stephen King multiverse, Castle Rock combines the mythological scale and intimate character storytelling of King’s best-loved works, weaving an epic saga of darkness and light, played out on a few square miles of Maine woodland. The fictional Maine town of Castle Rock has figured prominently in King’s literary career: Cujo, The Dark Half, It and Needful Things, as well as novella The Body and numerous short stories such as Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption are either set there or contain references to Castle Rock.
