The market featured 22 international projects, comprising 12 fiction feature films and 10 documentaries from 29 countries.

The slasher film does not have that much of a history of being scary. Mostly it’s about some psychopathic killer who easily stalks down his/her victim while they run for their lives but never quite manage to escape. This is of course unless they are pure and virginal deeming them the one to survive for moralistic value. I find that it’s quite rare to find a truly creepy slasher, which is why it was so nice to finally discover Tourist Trap.

Just when you thought it was safe to traverse the Outback, filmmaker Greg Mclean returns with another anti-tourism ad that surely has the Australian travel board squirming in their seats. Yup, that bad-to-the-bone Aussie murderer Mick Taylor is back to his old tricks, slicing his way through a new batch of visitors while singing the praises of his majestic country. Taylor is a beacon of hope during this tired time of “found footage” horror and mass zombie hypnosis, returning slasher villains to their rightful place in current genre times. That’s right, you might rather a dingo eat your baby than Mick Taylor get his hands on it, because where Wolf Creek introduced the world to Australia’s answer to Charles Manson, Wolf Creek 2 establishes Taylor as a ferocious horror icon.
If you saw Wolf Creek, you’d know that psychotic pig-killer Mick Taylor (John Jarratt) has a thing...

William H. Macy is one of those actors who you can't help but be in awe of. In everything from "Boogie Nights" and "Magnolia" to his career-defining performance in "Fargo" and his current role as the hapless drunkard in the beloved Showtime series "Shameless," he exudes a steely professionalism, along with a sense of fatherly warmth that is more than just an impressive combination of skills; it's a talent that seems downright magical.
This week, Macy has a small role in a small movie called "A Single Shot." The film, about a man (Sam Rockwell) who accidentally murders a woman while out hunting, features Macy as a shady small town lawyer, who wears a floppy wig that hangs limply over his forehead, and has an off putting demeanor that makes you want to take a shower immediately after watching him.

May in the Summer
Directed by Cherien Dabis
Screenplay by Cherien Dabis
2013, USA
May in the Summer is a strong second feature from writer/director Cherien Dabis, whose Amreeka debuted at Sundance in 2009. After an uneasy and clunky start, the second half effectively blends the desperation of decision with a spectacular visual sense of discovery.
May (Dabis) is a successful writer with one book under her belt who journeys from New York to her family home in Amman, Jordan for her imminent wedding. Her long divorced parents (Hiam Abbass, Bill Pullman) and her two sisters (Nadine Malouf and Arrested Development’s Alia Shawkat) must come together to support her. May’s mother is still wounded 8 years after being abandoned by her husband and has retreated into Christianity for respite. So it comes as no surprise to May that she is vehemently opposed to her marrying a man of Muslim descent.

Fringe Episode 503
“The Recordist”
Written By: Graham Roland
Directed By: Jeff T. Thomas
Original Airdate: 12 October 2012
In This Episode...
Astrid digs the first tape out of the amber - which is actually tape three. No one is really surprised that Walter would hide them out of order. The tape is a little warped, but they get coordinates that send them out to rural Pennsylvania. In the middle of nowhere, they are “captured” by tree people - humans who live in the forest and have a creeping bark-like fungus on their skin. Walter, Olivia, Peter, and Etta are brought to the tree people’s encampment, where the “leader,” Edwin, recognizes Walter.
This encampment is where the history lives. When the invasion started, Edwin and a clan of followers headed into the forest to live off the grid and record every major event since - all on super high-tech glowy cubes. Fringe...

Dread Central got an interview with Branded director Jamie Bradshaw at the Comic-Con, and because the film features monsters and the evils of advertising, I thought I’d share it with you.
You used to work in marketing. Was there something about your job that disenfranchised you and inspired the critique in Branded?
“I wouldn’t call it a critique of marketing. I would call it a mind bending journey through our very dark and hallucinatory world. It’s a dark place but it’s the world we live in. I’m not criticizing it. To criticize marketing is to criticize the world. I feel you like you don’t criticize the fundamentals of the world you live in. You express the way it is. It’s the way we’ve chosen to live our lives.”
Everyone is complicit in it.
“We live in an era defined by that complicity.

A tense, well-made mountaineering thriller with some spectacular effects that could finally make director Julian Gilbey's name
British director Julian Gilbey, often working with his screenwriter brother Will Gilbey, has made some commercially successful pictures over the last decade, including the geezer-thriller Rise of the Footsoldier. But this looks like his best yet: an impressively realistic-looking jeopardy nightmare that dovetails with a tense thriller plot. Australian actor Melissa George plays a tough mountaineer who goes hiking with four others in the Scottish Highlands. In the middle of nowhere, they are astonished to hear the crying of a young girl somewhere under the heather. I feared a flabby supernatural outcome – something like The Descent. But no: it keeps on the side of realism, and stays more or less plausible right to the end. There are some tremendous free-climbing stunts, and breathtaking moments in which people fall, very realistically, from great heights.

Tom Savini got his start in the film business by creating some of the greatest F/X work horror movie fans have ever seen. As his career expanded, he left behind the latex and Karo syrup and began creating characters in a different manner ... by portraying them on screen. While Nick Nicolaou's upcoming independent zombie effort Mary Doe is a bit on the confusing side in terms of how it's all coming together, one thing is for certain ... with the addition of the great Tom Savini, Nicolaou and company are certainly headed in the right direction!
"We have been developing the project for 2 years now and setting up a solid platform to move from," Nicolaou told us earlier. "The development process has taken a long time, but we have not stopped the creative momentum that we established a while back. The scope and visual content of our project has gotten more ambitious. My company, Make-up Effects Group, has been a force behind all my projects, and we have brought together an amazing array of production art and design, make-up effects, miniature models and animatronic creatures that you would never find in an independent film of our budget level.

A new indie zombie project entitled Mary Doe, the first entry in a planned trilogy, is officially on the horizon from filmmaker Nick Nicolaou, and the project has piqued our interest due to its unique approach of using the Left 4 Dead video game engine to create a zombie-filled landscape in which to tell its tale.
"We have been developing the project for 2 years now and setting up a solid platform to move from," Nicolaou tells us. "The development process has taken a long time, but we have not stopped the creative momentum that we established a while back. The scope and visual content of our project has gotten more ambitious. My company, Make-up Effects Group, has been a force behind all my projects, and we have brought together an amazing array of production art and design, make-up effects, miniature models and animatronic creatures that you would never find in an...

Chicago – The DVD Round-Up has gone silent for a few weeks on summer vacation but as more and more interesting titles threaten to fall through the cracks, it returns with three art films that are definitely worth a look. Don’t worry. Summer vacation hasn’t made the Round-Up arthouse-only, but it’s nice to comeback a little smarter-looking than when we left.

Burning Bright is about a young woman trapped in a big, old, boarded up house. In the middle of nowhere. In her undies. With a Bengal tiger that hasn’t been fed for two weeks. And an autistic brother to protect. That she can’t touch. During a hurricane. For realsies. Hit the jump to see what I thought.
Tiger, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?
The title is taken from William Blake’s poem The Tyger and I guess if it was called Tiger, Tiger people would have thought it was about a bar full of footballers and ex-Big Brother contestants.
Anyhoo, this tiger-centric tale is triggered when Johnny (Garret Dillahunt – The Last House on the Left and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles *blubs*) buys the Bengal beast from a bitch tits-less Meatloaf in a shady roadside deal.

Metric go to a secluded location in a music video for their new single "Eclipse (All Yours)". In the middle of nowhere, they are seen occupied with the songwriting of "The Twilight Saga's Eclipse" soundtrack while footage from the vampire movie is sometimes displayed on a TV screen.
When Metric was asked to write a theme song for the Robert Pattinson-starring flick, they knew nothing about the book and the big screen adaptation. But, Howard Shore considered their lack of knowledge about the vampire saga was a good thing because he wanted the anthem to be penned "from the perspective of the character."
"Since then, I've learned a little bit more about how Muse plays into the books, and the larger themes. But I think it's good I went into it just looking at the character," the band's member Emily Haines told MTV when attending the world premiere of...
