Recently Guillermo del Toro, the Oscar-winning director behind “The Shape of Water,” “Nightmare Alley” and “Pinocchio,” said that collecting physical media, in the midst of streamers unceremoniously deleting thousands of titles, is nothing short of a “moral imperative.” And we agree. Each month new home video releases – of both classic films and newer titles – come out. And each one is cause for celebration. With that in mind, we want to highlight the very best titles of every month.
With the insane games that the various streaming platforms are pulling in terms of removing content from their services — including projects that were made specifically for those platforms — an added emphasis has been placed on home video. And with good reason. The only way you can ensure that the movies you love will be around is by owning them on physical media. Thankfully the home video labels have been stepping up their game,...

Halloween is perfectly suited for watching movies at home – it’s the time of year where, conceivably, things start getting cooler and a cozy night in with your favorite horror movie is at its most appealing. And thankfully there are plenty of new Blu-rays and 4K Ultra HD discs out there to fill every need, for the fans of the mega-scary, to those who just want to watch a semi-spooky romp with the family.
“Night of the Demons” 4K International Film Marketing
One of the most beloved cult movies of the 1980’s gets gussied up in 4K finery. If you’ve never seen “Night of the Demons,” it’s a hoot – and one of the most Halloween-y movies of the era. It’s about a bunch of kids who break into an abandoned funeral parlor to launch an epic Halloween party. (Shouldn’t they know better?) Soon enough they’re...

Geralyn Marie Betzler worked on several movies throughout the ’80s and ’90s. On her first feature, 1985’s Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, she was credited by her full birth name, but as her screen acting career went on she would take credit as either Geri Betzler or Zoe Trilling – and it’s that second name that most fans seem to know her by. Among her credits are episodes of Guiding Light, 21 Jump Street, and Married… with Children, and the films Amityville Horror: The Evil Escapes, They Came from Outer Space, The Borrower, Dr. Giggles, Night Terrors, Hellbound, and Leprechaun 3 – but her most popular role may be in the 1994 horror comedy Night of the Demons 2, where she stole the show as bad girl Shirley Finnerty. Sadly, just as Night of the Demons 2 is reaching Blu-ray courtesy of Scream Factory, it has been confirmed that Betzler / Trilling passed away...

A few weeks ago, we learned that Scream Factory is giving director Kevin S. I’ll be the first to admit my mistakes. When I made that Alligator 2 defense, and no, doing that video is not the mistake I’m referring to, I mentioned that the giant monster movie had become somewhat of a lost art, particularly in the ’90s. Then I ended up rewatching Anaconda (watch it Here) and realized I had totally forgotten about it. That’s because it got lost in the likes of Deep Blue Sea and Lake Placid. Both those movies seem to have longer lasting impacts. Deep Blue Sea has that great surprise kill and Lake Placid has, well, it has Betty White. There are others, too. The third installment in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise, Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, is now available to stream on Screambox. The sequel was initially released in 1990 and marked the first entry in the franchise distributed by New Line Cinema in an attempt to turn it into a new series that harkened back to the original’s gritty horror roots.
Considering the events of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, that also meant introducing a new cannibalistic clan to accompany the iconic Leatherface in the sequel. Leatherface follows a couple from California who run afoul of the Sawyer clan after a bizarre run-in with a hitchhiker at a Texas gas station. That hitchhiker, Tex, is played by The Lord of the Rings trilogy star and frequent David Cronenberg collaborator Viggo Mortensen. Mind you, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III isn’t Mortensen’s first horror role – that distinction belongs to 1987’s...

All the Warwick Davis Leprechaun movies are coming out in a new Blu Ray combo pack. The commentary tracks offer some memories of my two contributions to the guilty pleasure franchise. Here are a few more.
I grew up enjoying the absurdist humor of the Monty Python’s Flying Circus TV series. So why not Absurdist Cinema? I loved the 1941 Hellzapoppin’, an early iconic example. The concept of the mid ’90’s Leprechaun franchise was proudly ludicrous – pint sized Jason/Freddy/Chucky amalgam with an Irish twist terrorizes and kills most of the supporting cast. But he was never really scary. I decided to embrace the absurd and make it as much fun as the formula allowed.
Blue Rider Pictures, for whom I had made Night Of The Demons 2, were asked by Trimark to produce the third and, at that stage, the intended last in the series. Send the little guy to Vegas,...

It seems like every horror film at one point in its life gets a sequel. Even if facing minor success – such as Piranha 3D – a sequel still somehow comes to light. Mostly met with open arms and excitement, sequels are a fantastic concept in so many ways – continuing a story we love, with the characters we love in a new set of circumstances, what’s not to flip your wig over? Okay so not all sequels carry that tradition, but think of this – without the sequel, we would have no Jason Voorhees as a hockey mask wearing psychopath, no zombies ransacking a shopping mall, no Chop Top, and Laurie Strode would have forever been just some girl Michael Myers went after.
Of course not all sequels are created equal or even close to what their original counterparts are made of – which therein lays a problem with some fans when a sequel is announced.

Anglo/Australian filmmaker Brian Trenchard-Smith is developing Sword Point, a drama about an injured Chinese gymnast who takes up fencing in a bid to realise her dream of representing China in sport.

Amelia Kinkade returns as the demonic Angela, making Halloween night hell for another group of young people (this time from a religious school) who make the mistake of partying at Hull House. With impressive makeup and monster FX by Steve Johnson, Night Of The Demons 2 will be presented in 1.78 anamorphic widescreen on the discs, with audio commentary by Trenchard-Smith and cinematographer David Lewis. The same day, Olive also issues a new DVD and Blu-ray of writer/director Fred Dekker and co-scripter Shane Black’s The Monster Squad, remastered in HD at 2.35:1 widescreen but with no special features announced. Retail prices for each title are $19.95 for the DVD, $29.95 for the Blu-ray.

Besides some of our writers recommending flicks for October, we will be bringing in a few of our friends who work in the industry to see what they watch at the most wonderful time of the year for genre fiends.
Legendary auteur Brian Trenchard-Smith, the director of Escape 2000, Dead-End Drive In and Leprechaun 3, gives us his favorite flicks for Halloween!

The power of Christ impales the man in this video who is a human punching bag for a group of nuns practicing their Karate and Aikido moves. It's an exploitation lover's wet dream — complete with rosary strangulation and slow-mo. Check out the video below, which we truly hope is real, and then dig into five other films that feature ass-kicking nuns. Night of the Demons 2 Sister Gloria (the awesome Jennifer Rhodes) is the snarky nun with nunchakus and a stealthy ruler who guards the students of St. Rita's from the demonic Angela. Nude Nuns With Big Guns Sister Sarah (Asun Ortega) wields a set of wicked guns after getting caught up in a ring of corrupt clergy, drug-dealing bikers, and...

Brian Trenchard-Smith looks deep into the art of directing animals, long before the digital age.
When Brian Trenchard-Smith wants to tell you about directing animals on film, you step out of the way. Here’s Brian with many, many wonderful tales (and tails).
Rise of the Planet of the Apes is the latest example of how digital makes possible previously impossible animal actions, like a gorilla leaping from the Golden Gate Bridge into a helicopter cockpit. Take a look at the Comicon teaser.
But there was a time when the animal and the lens were all you had to work with. In the pre-cgi era, I was lucky enough to stage sequences involving cats, bobcats, dogs, lions, elephants, boa constrictors, chimps, spiders, scorpions, cockroaches, a mud crab, a pigeon, and a frog.
Working with All Creatures Great And Small requires complex planning, flexibility, and infinite patience. I hold the trainers...

So many horror hotties to choose from through out the history of our beloved genre. Amelia Kinkade from the cult classic Night of the Demons. The dance number she did in its sequel Night of the Demons 2... oh my god! Shawnee Smith from The Blob, anyone? Suzanne Snyder from Killer Klowns from Outer Space are all on my want to see them naked list.
My fiance is going to kill me for my choice. I might pay for this later, but Danielle Harris is my choice for horror vixen that I want to see naked. Don't start ranting "Danielle was naked in Rob Zombie's Halloween ", because she was screaming and getting sliced up. I couldn't really relish and enjoy her naked boobies on screen. She has been in the horror industry since she was a child, and is now a grown up leading lady in the genre. I've had...

Brian Trenchard-Smith is awesome. He's like the Roger Corman of Australia. Escape 2000, Dead End Drive In, Night of the Demons 2, Frog Dreaming and Stunt Rock are just a few of the many kick ass titles in his arsenal of awesome.
Now the ozploitation master has returns with a schlocky made for TV post-apocalyptic flick called Arctic Blast. We reported on it a ways back, but we've got the trailer so it's time for an update.

Released on home video in 1994, Night of the Demons 2 is a bit of a surprise. The MPAA had spent the past decade beating up horror films is response to the slasher craze. The failure of the new Nc-17 rating was becoming evident, as most theaters and newspaper listings treated films with the rating like pornographic features (Showgirls didn't help much). The advent of home video was raising new concerns about children getting a hold of unrated horror films - with no one remembering that a decade ago, retailers were selling Rambo 2 toys to children.
So along comes this sequel to the cult classic with full frontal nudity and more gore than the original. Yet it earns an R-rating, which might seem rather surprising. Perhaps the MPAA was swayed by the ending,...

It’s that time of year again, kids. Dread Central’s 2010 Horror at the Oscars coverage. Horror was indeed present this year and in black-tie. While Roger Corman and Lauren Bacall were honored a few months back at the Governor’s Award Ceremony, it was an unexpected delight to see Corman, recipient of the lifetime achievement Oscar, enjoy a standing ovation on national television.
I was, however, very disappointed that neither of them were allowed to speak. Roger Corman’s contributions to modern cinema are too vast for him to just stand up and wave. James Cameron was one of many Corman acolytes present, and his nomination speaks to Corman’s tremendous legacy. On the Terminator DVD Cameron mentions, "I trained at the Roger Corman Film School.” Jonathan Demme, Martin Scorsese, and Francis Ford Coppola, among many others, were also former students.
The terror continued with a spoof of Paranormal Activity...

Like horror movies? Like Cinematical? Then you're in luck, because Cinematical happens to have its own horror movie blog called Horror Squad. But in case you're not reading Hs on a regular basis (for shame), here's what you've been missing on the genre front.
- First and foremost, this past week's Horror Squad Movie Club entry was Night of the Demons 2. Feel free to join in on Alison Nastasi's discussion post right here.
- If you loved the terrifying Spanish beast that is [Rec], which sadly needs to be qualified as the original film Quarantine was based on, Luke Mullen has details on how/when you can get your hands on a DVD/Blu-ray of its amazing sequel.
- Brian Salisbury checks in with his latest Terror Tuesday Report from the Alamo Drafthouse. If it's been a while since you've seen The Beast Within, give it a read to see...

Our first full week of Movie Club Madness is over. But really, the fun is just beginning:
Peter Hall took on the inaugural club posts for both Squad sites with some altered love. The SciFi geeks got a taste of the William Hurt-starring Altered States for SciFi Squad, while the horror fiends got a little "rednecks-kidnap-an-alien" magic with Altered for Horror Squad. Over at Moviefone, they moved from The Hurt Locker to Sandra Bullock's opus, The Blind Side.
So, what's up next? The Squads kicked off their new discussions yesterday:
Alison Nastasi tweeted the heck out of her pick, Night of the Demons 2, for Horror Squad on Saturday night via #hsmovieclub and #nightofthedemons2. You can check out the full discussion kicking off today right here.
Jacob Hall, meanwhile, chose the David Bowie classic The Man Who Fell to Earth for SciFi Squad. You can catch that discussion right here.
